🍃 Tempus Fugit, Tempus Tardescit ⏳
Tempus Fugit, Tempus Tardescit (4829 words) on AO3
Emmrich x f!Rook Rating: Explicit
Summary:
"For the manipulation of time you must relax, and allow your senses to unfocus," instructs Emmrich. "The power is there, waiting to be perceived, but it requires a free and open mind." His hand sweeps over the curve of her hips, along the length of her thighs, skating upwards to settle between her legs. "Mmmm," Rook hums, her throat vibrating as though she is one of his precious handbells, rung just so. "That feels good." Emmrich chuckles. "A bolt of inspiration has just struck me," he says. "An idea, one which may earn your approval, for once." -- Rook tries and fails to learn the spell of Time Slowing from the Veilguard's resident Fade expert, until her teacher stumbles upon an unconventional approach.

Actual advice if you have NO IDEA where to begin; no characters no plot no setting nothing:
Write your favorite story as best as you can, from memory. Do not check your accuracy. Put it away, don't look at it. Go read something - anything that interests you. Ideally fiction, but nonfiction is fine as long as it's longer than a tweet or a blog post etc.
The next day, write another of your favorite stories. From memory. Put it away. Read something.
Repeat this daily for at least a week.
THEN, when you've spent a whole week writing and reading, take out the first story you wrote and read it. See what mistakes and errors you notice. Write it again, better, but referring ONLY to the copy you wrote last week - not to the original material that it's retelling.
Repeat that for all seven of your other stories.
When you've got first and second drafts of all seven stories? When you've read at least 14 different things that interest you? Examine your stories for what you like about them; compare and contrast them. Look at the characters, the plots, the settings.
THEN, after you've done all that, write a story Like That. Do not worry about it being either good or original; it's an exercise. Worry only about it sharing qualities with those other stories that you picked.
Repeat as necessary until you're able to write the story that you want to write.
How can I become a writer?
Write.
But I don't know where to start.
Write.
But I'm worried.
WRITE.
What if nobody likes it?

Why are you using chatgpt to get through college. Why are you spending so much time and money on something just to be functionally illiterate and have zero new skills at the end of it all. Literally shooting yourself in the foot. If you want to waste thirty grand you can always just buy a sportscar.

you'll get the urge as an artist or a writer to say out loud the things you're worried about "the proportions are off" "kind of out of character" "i'm not good at summaries" "didn't get as much detail as i wanted" "i made a mistake and here's how" and that's the self-conscious part of your brain telling you "it's bad and if you don't tell them you know it's bad then they'll think you're stupid" but you've got to ignore that little voice and pretend you think it's good or else that little voice is going to ruin your life

Duolingo Sucks, Now What?: A Guide
Now that the quality of Duolingo has fallen (even more) due to AI and people are more willing to make the jump here are just some alternative apps and what languages they have:
"I just want an identical experience to DL"
Busuu (Languages: Spanish, Japanese, French, English, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Polish, Turkish, Russian, Arabic, Korean)
"I want a good audio-based app"
Language Transfer (Languages: French, Swahili, Italian, Greek, German, Turkish, Arabic, Spanish, English for Spanish Speakers)
"I want a good audio-based app and money's no object"
Pimsleur (Literally so many languages)
Glossika (Also a lot of languages, but minority languages are free)
*anecdote: I borrowed my brother's Japanese Pimsleur CD as a kid and I still remember how to say the weather is nice over a decade later. You can find the CDs at libraries and "other" places I'm sure.
"I have a pretty neat library card"
Mango (Languages: So many and the endangered/Indigenous courses are free even if you don't have a library that has a partnership with Mango)
Transparent Language: (Languages: THE MOST! Also the one that has the widest variety of African languages! Perhaps the most diverse in ESL and learning a foreign language not in English)
"I want SRS flashcards and have an android"
AnkiDroid: (Theoretically all languages, pre-made decks can be found easily)
"I want SRS flashcards and I have an iphone"
AnkiApp: It's almost as good as AnkiDroid and free compared to the official Anki app for iphone
"I don't mind ads and just want to learn Korean"
lingory
"I want an app made for Mandarin that's BETTER than DL and has multiple languages to learn Mandarin in"
ChineseSkill (You can use their older version of the course for free)
"I don't like any of these apps you mentioned already, give me one more"
Bunpo: (Languages: Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Korean, and Mandarin)
