A Quick Analysis of Roz's "Heart"

This took me a few viewings to piece together, it was very "show and don't tell" and I appreciate that. It started when someone on here postulated that Roz's brilliant orange/pink light when she first held Brightbill was her experiencing joy/love, and I legit think they're onto something with that.

I would say it's the physical manifestation of her programming being overwritten.

First, look at what happens the MOMENT Roz scans the egg and sees life inside.

Those little streaks of orange and pink. I don't think we EVER see any other time where her eyes show more than one color. Almost like some instinct was set off that made her feel like she needed to look out for the egg.

It isn't until she's actually holding Brightbill and he nudges his head against her that that pink and orange light flares up.

Not only in her eyes again, but practically engulfing her. Lighting up all her panels, looking like it's warming her core. But, still being very task-minded, she's quick to dismiss it at the time.

We next see it when Rummage runs her diagnostic. Roz once again lights up like a disco ball in pink and orange, and whatever Rummage was seeing on her end, it quickly became clear that "you overrode your programming??"

It all builds up to the last time we see it, when it seems as though Roz's memories have been purged and Brightbill forgives her - even if it seems she can't hear him.

ALSO IT STARTS RADIATING OUT FROM WHERE HE'S NESTLED INTO HER AAAGH.

She confirms it later on, but it's ultimately her "humanity" and her bond with her son that saves her in end. This light that has been building in her since she first found an egg in need allowed her to not lose herself despite technology's best efforts. And yet she couldn't have done that without Brightbill.

I JUST THINK IT'S A NEAT EXECUTION. 😭😭

When Mychael said “I can’t let you leave” (or something along those lines, I have bad eyesight haha) it reminded me of fireflies that are caught inside a jar. It’s mostly shown in media as this fun outdoorsy activity/item but I wondered if there would be symbolisms of that in Mushroom Oasis? Like, Mychael trapping MC (firefly) in a jar that represents his hypnosis(?)

That’s all I wanted to say! I’ll try my best to support you and your works! I don’t have talent for art so I’ll use my words instead. Again, I hope I didn’t bother you with my spamming! Have a good day/night!

i just remembered seeing a fanart of mr. crawling on twt of him in a what-if of what his life was like before he became a ghost and it's him depicted as like a bodyguard kind of like samurai.

and then it reminded me of shinpei from firefly wedding/hotaru no yomeiri. someone who's also very dedicated to his partner (satoko) and would do anything to stay with her and protect her, much like what mr. crawling does with mc🩷

So I don't think we've touched on this before, but *ahem* Psychology Degree™ coming through.

I started thinking about the discussion about what brought Evan to Tommy. Like, obviously we know the hurricane and Bathena being missing did. But also. What got him seeking Tommy out after all that was over.

And it occurred to me, that I'm going to assume, somewhere in the midst of the helicopter flight, with Tommy and his Fake Mouth Static©, that Evan probably saw something in this man that made him go "he matches me".

Because let's break it down:

They've both spent many years of their lives being lonely. For Tommy, we know on some level that his loneliness is one that didn't include people, while Evan on the other hand, at least had Maddie...but also she was a kid. And then when she was a young adult, she had to contend with Doug. So when his sister couldn't be around, he didn't have anyone else.

And I have to believe that while Evan probably didn't know Tommy's life story, we know he's come up in passing over time, so I feel like Evan has probably heard about how he used to keep from connecting with people so he didn't have to lose them. Something akin to "yeah, Tommy didn't really talk to anyone in the beginning, but by the time he left, we were good". Knowing all those things, it then creates this interesting dynamic of two people who have known loneliness--one by himself, the other surrounded by people who are supposed to care but don't seem to--suddenly recognizing something in themselves, in the other person.

And then, there's the pause at the end of 703. I think at that point, Evan has made that connection, that they're similar. And obvs we know that at that point he's also developing a crush. Because here's this super Cool™ guy who is a pilot and can fly helicopters, who knows his people and cared enough to break all the rules and risk his job to save Bobby. And I have to believe that in that, Evan also recognized that this man he's probably never met before (or maybe he did, but it was in passing) [also it just occurred to me that...was there possibly a scene in 703 that got deleted that showed them meeting...because they didn't want us to get anymore breadcrumbs for 704-06 than the arm touch at the end of the episode???] was willing to put his own job on the line to go out and save someone he hasn't worked for in 7 years. Obviously careers and fireman's benefits/galas/etc being what they are (and actual fires obvs), they've had run-ins. But they haven't actually had something this in-depth in years. But Tommy still showed up. He did something that the rest of them would consider be going Full Buck. So to be perfectly honest, I think that might've been the catalyst to what made Evan go "Hmm. This one." 👀

She couldn't even really talk, busy hyperventilating. She was bleeding, sure, bit bruised up, but that wasn't even remotely the problem. She was actually very fine, physically speaking, but she hadn't been able to stop crying before reuniting with Joel. F.uck it, she wasn't even a crier to begin with. The last time she had cried about David was literally ten seconds after killing him, when she had found herself in Joel's arms and had stopped, and since then nothing.

So of course she had thought she was over it, it had been almost a freaking year, they were safe in Jackson, and then today she had fought two raiders after getting separated from Joel, and something about the fight with the last one, the way he had dropped on her, had just... "No-no, it's not... that, it's... 'mnot hurt," a f.ucking sob came out of her, and Ellie sat on a log and bent over because it felt like her chest might explode. "F.uck, come on..." she told herself, but nope, it was like a river coming out of her eyes. "I can't stop-"

I was unreasonably happy earlier when I looked out my front door and saw lightning bugs blinking in the twilight. (Yes, we call them lightning bugs here. You have your term, we have ours.)

What made me happy was the sheer number of them. They're one of many species that's been horribly reduced by the combination of human chemicals and climate change, and they are a core memory of my childhood. Last year, there were so few that I was afraid they had died out in this region. Seeing them back, and so prolific, gives me a tiny bit of hope that we haven't completely destroyed the ecology here.

Going through all my wips and stumbled on a old Rayne fanfic and I have to say… It was such a nice reread. One of those times where you come back years later and are like “wait I wrote this? That’s not half bad!” And then you get angry because you didn’t finish and it was JUST getting good.

Forgot how much I whumped Jayne. Might have whumped him too much actually… But the comfort! Ugh! I love it. Such a shame that I’ll probably never finish it, but THE POTENTIAL! Bellísimo!

bucktommy proposal end of season 8 or start of season 9?

i mean what do I want? obviously sooner than later. I really do believe in the logic that we've seen stated about Bobby and Athena in relation to what Frank said in (I think) 702, that when who people work in the field, they understand the immediacy. I also think that you have two characters who have been through the wringer in their personal lives, and if this show is really going to let them have their happy ending, I don't see it being a long, drawn out process. For Maddie and Chim, it made sense. Healing from DV is a process, and she needed to be able to trust him. By correlation, Evan has always been seeking someone who would match his attachment style and not be turned off by how his abandonment issues affect him in relationships. Add to this the fact that I feel like Evan's highest love languages are physical touch and quality time (although quality time may also be competing with acts of service; we could argue removing physical touch, but I think that being a love language for him is clearest in s1 with his self-diagnosed sex addiction). Still, even in season 7, he's always touching people he cares about. His hand on Eddie's shoulder when Chris leaves; the hug with Bobby (both in 710), the kiss in the hospital in 706. Even the hands on Chris's shoulders in 709 from the stills.

By relation, I think Tommy's similar, with acts of service and quality time being his top two. I'm less inclined at the moment to say physical touch is as high for him, because we haven't had enough of out, therapized Tommy to really gauge it. Still, the acts of service is obvious. He shows up for those he cares for (flying into a hurricane, showing up to the wedding even after fighting a fire all night and day). And we know he's not just showing up for Evan to sleep with him; we've seen dates, dinner together, actually showing up for one another.

Ironically it's both of these that get me wondering if we'll be waiting into s9 purely just because I don't think that receiving gifts ranks very high for either of them. I honestly think we'll see them moving in together with more importance placed on it because that directly correlates to quality time AND acts of service. Truth be told, I think when a proposal finally happens between these two, I think Tommy will be the one to ask, because it's something Evan wants, and as stated, acts of service are important to Tommy. Still, I think if we're lucky enough to see it happen, we might be waiting a while. Again, I could be wrong, given the discussion Bobby had with Frank in therapy about not putting off more time than necessary to be together when you know life is limited (and this will be another relationship with two first responders who are in dangerous positions). But realistically? I think we'll see moving in together in s8, and then maybe a proposal in s9. I legitimately could see B/T getting completely domestic with a home, an animal (maybe even a kid) before they even make it down the aisle.

(This was far more than what you asked, but it's how I got there 😂)
