So I've been thinking about the character of Paper Mario (TLDR: the Paper Mario character exists in PM, TTYD, CS, and OK. Super Mario exists in PM, TTYD, and SPM. Sticker Star is not real.)
(For clarity, normal Mario will be referred to as Super Mario and the character of Paper Mario will be referred to as Paper Mario. The original Paper Mario game (known by some as Paper Mario 64) will be abbreviated as PM)
The important things are that
Miyamoto (I think) said that the Mario in PM is the same as Super Mario, and
Paper Mario shows up as his own character in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam
My initial thought was simply that the Paper Mario games are simultaneously a retelling of a story of something that happened to Super Mario, whilst also being directly the story of Paper Mario. The problems with that logic are primarily Color Splash (CS) and Origami King (OK), where the characters must be made of paper for the plot to make sense. My solution therefore, is that PM and TTYD follow my original idea, whereas CS and OK are the adventures of Paper Mario later that didn't happen to Super Mario. The remaining two games, Super Paper Mario (SPM) and Sticker Star (SS) are outliers. SPM is weird because it differs significantly from the gameplay of ordinary Paper Mario games and so I believe it only takes place for Super Mario, and not Paper Mario, and merely has a 2D art style. Sticker Star is tricky, because of the stickers, it can't have occurred to Super Mario, but it also requires a "reader" of a book to place the stickers, so it doesn't make sense to have happened to Paper Mario. Therefore, I believe SS is entirely a work of fiction. You could depict this as a Venn Diagram with Super Mario on one circle, and Paper Mario for the other. SPM is only in the Super Mario circle, PM and TTYD are in the middle, CS and OK are in the Paper Mario circle, and SS is outside of the circles.

SPM Theory: Merloo and the Fourth Pure Heart
Tumblr media
«The Ancients traveled to many worlds to entrust people with Pure Hearts. It was to keep them safe from destruction or misuse by those with evil hearts. The Pure Hearts were drawn by their own power toward those strong with love. The Ancients used this trait to find suitable guardians in each world. And a few romances also began as a result of these little journeys… Many of the Ancients who found guardians fell in love with those they met. And so they lived their days happily in the world they'd visited out of duty. This is how the legend of the hero was passed down to future generations…»
This is one of Garson's stories from Super Paper Mario. In it, it's explained that the Ancients decided to entrust the Pure Hearts to well-meaning people in different worlds for safekeeping until the hero arrived.
However, although there's a great emphasis in the guardians here, there is one Pure Heart whose guardian we know nothing about...
Let's start with a little recap. During SPM's events, Mario and company find the Pure Hearts in the following places:
❤️ The First Pure Heart is given to Mario by Merlon in Flipside.
🧡 The Second Pure Heart is given to Mario by Merlumina in Yold Ruins, with Fracktail also serving as a guardian to it.
💛 The Third Pure Heart is obtained from Merlee and it was hidden within her Mansion.
💚 The Fourth Pure Heart is found within Fort Francis, with Tippi's happiness releasing it from its hiding place.
🩵 The Fifth Pure Heart is handed over by Squirps, prince of the lost kingdom of Squirpia.
💙 The Sixth Pure Heart is obtained from the Floro Sapiens, who explain that King Croacus IV was its current owner.
💜 The Seventh Pure Heart is kept at Sammer’s Kingdom, with the current King Sammer being its guardian and, thus, the one who has to give it to the heroes (or rather, the one who should have given it to the heroes).
🤍 The Eighth Pure Heart, lastly, was entrusted to Jaydes and Grambi, rulers of The Underwhere and The Overthere respectively, who transformed it into their daughter, Luvbi. In the end, Luvbi herself decided to go with the heroes, reverting back to her original form and accepting her fate as the final Heart.
Notice something strange? There was exactly one Pure Heart that wasn’t given to the heroes by anyone. That's right; it's the fourth one, the green Pure Heart...
All the other Pure Hearts were being guarded by at least one person (although in Croacus' case, he wasn't exactly "guarding" it). Yet the green Pure Heart was just found inside a fortress/castle.
Here's what Merlon says about it when you return to Flipside after completing Chapter 3:
«I think that castle was once a dwelling of the Ancients I told you of earlier. It seems that my ancestors have roamed far and wide in their dimensional travels. “In the castle beyond the great sea, we hid a Pure Heart and sealed it safely…” Yes, I remember reading such a passage in the Light Prognosticus. The seal could only have been broken by a powerful pulse of love and trust…»
Isn't it strange that the Ancients just seemingly hid a Pure Heart within a random castle they found and assigned no sort of protection to it except for a seal?
In Garson's story, it's stated that the Pure Hearts were entrusted to "suitable guardians", and so it'd be more believable to think that there used to be a guardian for the green Pure Heart as well.
And I believe this Pure Heart's guardian (or, at least, its original guardian) was none other than Merloo.
Now, if you're part of SPM's fandom you'll probably already know that Merloo has been the subject of much theorizing; he's a quite mysterious figure described as "a great magician who could control dimensions" and, allegedlly, the writer of the Light Prognosticus too (although Merlumina is also stated to be its writer).
Nothing more is known about Merloo himself... And there aren't any Ancient-related characters who look like him in-game, unlike with the other three sages we hear about in SPM...
Tumblr media
But why Merloo as the green Pure Heart's guardian? Well, that's because I think the other three sages were also entrusted with a Pure Heart each...
My evidence? The fact that another of Garson's stories sheds light on Merlumina's sister, who was tasked with finding one of these suitable guardians. She fell in love with said guardian, the King Sammer of that time, ultimately marrying him and having 100 kids together; this means that the King Sammer we meet in SPM (who is the purple Pure Heart's current guardian) is a descendant of them.
All of this aligns with the Garson story I cited at the beginning of this post. But, considering Garson spoke in plural ("Many of the Ancients who found guardians fell in love with those they met"), this means Merlumina's sister wasn't the only case of an "ancient x guardian" couple happening...
Let's take a look at the other Ancients we know of:
Merlight is stated to be a "distant ancestor" of Merlon, who at the time of SPM is in possession of the red Pure Heart.
Merlumina is an ancestor of Old Man Watchitt, and her spirit can be found in the same dimension/world as him, guarding the orange Pure Heart.
Merlimbis is a "direct ancestor" of both Merluvlee and Merlee; the current yellow Pure Heart's owner is Merlee.
Isn't it fair for us to assume that they were also tasked with finding guardians, fell in love with them, and decided to stay in the worlds they'd visited out of duty, as Garson's story says? Well, in Merlight's case, he designed Flipside/Flopside, so he had no other option than to remain there to ensure the city's correct functioning, I suppose... But I'm getting off-track.
Returning to the matter at hand: once again we can see that Merloo's name hasn't been brought up... He's the only sage whose descendants are completely unknown to the player.
If we follow my reasoning, we have Merlight, Merlumina and Merlimbis guarding the red, orange and yellow Pure Hearts alongside their spouses, respectively. Or rather, their descendants (except for Merlumina's case; I have an idea on why this could be, but that's for another day...).
The thing is that the red, orange and yellow Pure Hearts are the first three Pure Hearts encountered in-game. So, it wouldn't be irrational to assume that Merloo was also entrusted with the next Pure Heart after those. Which, no surprise, is the green Pure Heart.
So, to recap, Merloo went to The Bitlands, found a suitable guardian, and fell in love with them (just like the rest of the sages), staying in The Bitlands for the rest of his life and eventually passing on the responsibility of protectiing the green Pure Heart to his children, who in turn passed it on to their own children, and so on...
But what happened to their castle, then? Why is it now Fort Francis?
Honestly, I have no idea for why this the way it is.
Perhaps they were forced to flee due to unknown circumstances, with no other option than to leave the Pure Heart behind? Perhaps they all died due to some illness or attack, only managing to put an emergency seal on the Pure Heart before passing away?
I'm afraid, the answer shall remain a mystery forevermore...
However, I would like to say that there are some indications that hint at the possibility of a descendant of Merloo's being encountered in-game by the heroes...
Dimentio is quite the enigmatic character, isn't he?
He's a magician with great dimensional powers, just like Merloo, even being able to create his own pocket dimension!
Not only that, but he seemed to know quite a lot about the Pure Hearts and the Dark Prognosticus' final prophecy even before meeting Count Bleck...
On top of that, the only time Dimentio is fought against in SPM outside of Castle Bleck is, precisely, in The Bitlands...
Moreover, Dimentio seems to be aware of where the entrance to Merlumina's chamber (where the orange Pure Heart is hidden) is exactly located, and he has no trouble messing with Fracktail's mind!
Furthermore, how did Dimentio go to Flipside? How was he aware of its existence? And how was he able to send the heroes to The Underwhere and The Overthere? Also, all these places hid a Pure Heart as well...
Lastly, Dimentio knew that Jaydes' power could restore a damaged Pure Heart...
It's as if he had been taught all of these facts by someone, don't you think?
This is all suspicious...
...Quite suspicious, indeed...

So, let's talk about this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Many have pointed out that Super Radiant Peach bares a striking resemblance to Rosalina and/or her mother. Could this be a hint towards a possible familial connection?
Keep in mind, Super Mario Galaxy is old enough that the kids who grew up with it are old enough to work for Nintendo. Therefore there is a not so small chance that the implications of Super Radiant Peach are intentional.
Firstly, I want to mention the similar theming. Super Radiant Peach is themed around the idea of shining light (radiant, she can fire sparkle beams, etc.). Meanwhile, Rosalina's character heavily revolves around the stars - celestial bodies that produce light. Both Super Radiant Peach and Rosalina have an association with light.
Some of Super Radiant Peach's abilities could also be seen as upgraded versions of Peach's usual abilities. Rather than just floating, SRP can fly (and might I add, literally looks like a "shooting star" from afar whilst doing so).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SRP also has the power to fully restore the entire Sparkle Theatre in seconds, whereas Peach can restore people's health, but usually only a few people at a time at most.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only ability SRP has that's unrelated to her usual abilities is her ability to summon Sparkle beams.
It almost seems like the Theets (the little guys Peach saves during the course of the game) lending her their Sparkle power allowed Peach to tap into her hidden potential...
You see, stars in the Mario universe are often depicted as a source of incredible power, or incredibly powerful beings (Luma, Star Spirits, etc.), and Peach has established connections to the stars. For example, the reason Peach has many innate magical abilities is because she has wish power, which is based on the concept of wishing upon a star:
Tumblr media
That's not the only instance of Peach having an established connection to the stars. Her castle, like Rosalina's Comet Observatory, runs on Star Power:
Tumblr media
She's also one of the seven star children:
Tumblr media
(Yes, there's only six pictured here - the seventh is Yoshi a "surprise".)
It's explained that a star child is a child with a star resting inside their heart. Each baby is said to "possess an extraordinary amount of power".
But neither of these latter two examples mean much, right?
It's not uncommon for something in the Mario universe run on Star Power via the Power Stars - lots of things do. They're a popular energy source. And it's never established that star children are chosen. The seven stars that fell from the sky could've ended up in the hearts of the star children accidently, or maybe it was done by some higher being on purpose, we don't know.
However...there is one more connection Peach has to the Stars that is undeniably notable.
In Paper Mario it’s revealed that one of Peach's ancestors was given a treasure chest by the Star Spirits which was passed down at Mushroom Castle through the ages.
Tumblr media
Sure, this is established in PAPER Mario, but according to Miyamoto, every Mario is the same Mario. Paper Mario (the series) does take place in a book, but who's to say it's lore doesn't apply to the main series? The Star Spirits are in Mario Party 5 after all, implying they exist in the main series too.
Tumblr media
There's also Goomboss/Goomba King who debuted in Paper Mario but appeared in Super Mario 64 DS, a mainline game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Point is, if Paper Peach's family has had a connection to the stars for generations, then this is likely the case for main series Peach too.
Now let's look at Rosalina's family:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her father owned a telescope and would take her stargazing. This might have just been a hobby of his and nothing more, but let's also consider...
Tumblr media
Rosalina had a Star Bunny stuffed toy as a child.
Rosalina had a plush...of an alien species.
Star Bunnies can't be found on Earth (before the end of Galaxy 1, at least). Meaning most people hundreds of years ago would not have known of their existence, implying it's a homemade stuffed animal, implying that Rosalina's family knew of an alien species. How?
Well...what do you think that rusted spaceship was doing near Rosalina's home?
Tumblr media
Maybe Rosalina is from a family of royal explorers, and they used it to travel through space. Along the way, they might have found Star Bunnies, and maybe even...
Tumblr media
Star Haven, home of the Star Spirits.
Maybe an ancestor (or even parent) of Rosalina's and the ancestor of Peach's that received that chest from the Star Spirits are one in the same.
Alternatively, as the mother of the Lumas, there's a chance Rosalina may have encountered the Star Spirits at one point, so maybe she was the ancestor to receive the treasure chest, and for whatever reason, during one of her centennial visits to Earth, Rosalina gave it to the current ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, and it was passed down in the family ever since then (this part's basically a fanfic well, all of this is really, but it's a fun idea).
Perhaps Peach inherited her wish power from her ancestors (either as a result of her family's connection to the stars, or perhaps their abilities are WHY they formed a connection to the stars), but because Peach is their great (plus or minus however many more or less greats should be there) descendant it's essentially a watered-down version of Rosalina's star power (which, via Baby Rosalina, is implied to be something she's had since birth, it just became amplified after adopting the Lumas) but with the help of Stella and the Theets, she was able to tap into her full potential, hence the resemblance to Rosalina's mother.
Or perhaps I'm taking what almost definitely destined to be a one-off super form too seriously.

You ready for the most insane and pointless theory?
So let’s talk about the Shamans/descendants of the ancients. Idk how common knowledge this is since I spend an ungodly amount of time reading the Mario wiki, but in TTYD they do explain why throughout the games they have the same name but look different. Wonky, who is essentially the equivalent to Carson/Garson, says “Ol' Wonky hears they're from a strange tribe that names people by profession. So, for example, if someone did the same work as Merlon, they'd have the same name...”
So their names are based on their profession, cool. Each of the games have some of their own shaman characters that aren’t in the others. In 64, there’s a shaman npc that sell badges in exchange for Star Pieces. In TTYD, this character is replaced with one named Dazzle, who doesn’t look much the shaman characters. In SPM, there is no equivalent, due to badges and Star Pieces being absent in this game.
Tumblr media
So what’s the big deal? There’s a bunch of shaman characters from the first two games that don’t appear in SPM since their mechanics aren’t in the game. But there is an instance where another old character returned with a different name.
Madam Merlar and Merlumia
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now what if I said….
Tumblr media
NOW HEAR ME OUT-
I know it sounds crazy and it totally is, but let me just be silly
Tumblr media
Now what does this mean in the long run?
Honestly nothing. The most lore implications you can get from this is that both of them are shamans that ran away from tradition and decided to be a silly jester or something. Plus the fun design headcanon that the diamonds on Dimentio’s hat and chest are Star Pieces
Was there any point in making this post? Eh. Idk just wanted to show the mental gymnastics I go through trying to figure out any extra SPM lore
But that’s just a theory, A GAME THEORY
Ok bye-bye :]

Nastasia's brainwashing taking someone's evil side and bringing it to the forefront? That's fine, sure...
... but what if it's not the evil part of you that gets amplified so much as it is a twisted version of who you desire to be?
Paper Luigi has shown signs of desperately chasing a sense of perfectly-earned pride. He wants to be a hero like his brother! He wants to do grand, daring deeds and inspire awe in everyone around him! As Mr. L? Wish granted! You're a completely self-absorbed jerk who doesn't need to so much as lift a finger before feeling like you're better than everyone else.
On the flip side, what about a Mario who wishes he could be a bit more emotionally vulnerable, or openly express his worries/frustrations, but feels like he can't without troubling those around him? But as Mr. M? Wish granted! Mr. M is nothing but a big bundle of emotional vulnerability who is consistently spewing his thoughts and feelings all over the place.
You feel me? You see my vision here?

MARIO CRACK THEORY
I made a joke in a Discord call last night and I've put way too much thought into it so I need to get it out there.
So Waluigi right. Weird character. He's Wario's equivalent to Luigi but he's not Wario's brother and no one really knows who he is. He's flamboyant, arrogant, and hates Luigi for unknown reasons. His primary color is purple, with black and yellow as secondary colors associated with him. Like Wario he wears these goofy pointed shoes kind of like what you'd expect to see on a genie, or perhaps...
Tumblr media
...a jester?
And I seem to know of a jester who wears a lot of purple, black, and yellow, who's also pretty closely linked to Luigi...
Tumblr media
Waluigi is an avatar of Dimentio who exists specifically as a means for Dimentio mess with Luigi from a distance. That's why no one knows who the hell Waluigi is or where he came from, he's not real.
I've cracked the code guys I'm sure this is exactly what Fumihide Aoki was thinking when he created Waluigi 7 years before Super Paper Mario came out. /joke

The Toads & Koopa Conflict Hypothesis
I so there is a line from Paper Mario 64 that got me thinking about the history of conflict between the Mushroom and Koopa Kingdoms. So here is my hypothesis.
So the line in question comes from Kammy Koopa's response to the Toads suffering and not having their wishes granted. "Oh how delightful! They deserve it for the way they've treated us Koopas over the years." So I have wondered what could the Toads possibly have done to make Kammy say this.
So a little detail I have noticed is you can find Toad houses in the Koopa Kingdom. So I have always wondered why are they here? This is Bowser's Territory not the Mushroom Kingdom. On top of that things like Peach's stained-glass window, the ? Blocks, and 1-Up Mushrooms all have an in-universe explanation. So what I believe is the Toads and the previous rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom were conquerors at some point, and basically started to try to subjugate the Koopas.
This would explain why there are Toad houses in the Sprixie Kingdom, like I speculated in a previous post it's presence could imply thee Sprixie Kingdom was once under the Mushroom Kingdom's control. This would also explain why the Mushroom Kingdom is so vast, with both the Eastern and Western parts of it making up the whole Kingdom. These could be various territories that were conquered. Note, the "kingdom" in Mario Odyssey aren't actually Kingdoms but countries as seen in the Japanese version, and Pauline is the Mayor of New Donk City and not the entire Metro Kingdom or as the Japanese puts it City Country. So the Mushroom Kingdom in comparison to other Kingdoms is still pretty large, only possibly rivaled by Sarassaland.
Speaking of Super Mario Odyssey, this would explain why there is paintings littering the castle grounds which the brochure states the watchtowers they reside in have existed since olden times. It could be possible the previous rulers of the Mushroom Kingdom tried to takeover other countries in the Mario World as well but failed.
From here this would leave us at the current times with Peach the ruler who is trying to make the world a better place. Alongside the Toads who have become cowardly and lazy placing a value of relaxation. Thus resulting in the paintings no longer being used and other possibly territories like the Sprixe Kingdom becoming independent again. And the now remant Toad Houses in places like the Koopa Kingdom only being used here and there to help the Mario Bros. On top of all of that the Koopas still holding resentment towards the Toads have no problem rallying behind their charismatic leader Bowser, who is a conqueror and prides himself on being evil. As he treats them well and enjoys making the Toads suffer.

The Tribe of Darkness
Tumblr media
(Image credits to whom it may concern)
Nolrem and others like him are the descendants of these strange, ancient people. A very, very long time ago, they splintered off from the Tribe of Ancients and lived by themselves. I heard that they were so prideful that they avoided interacting with those outside of their tribe. They lived in secrecy, so we have little idea where they might have lived. Some say that they lived quietly in a castle deep in a forest where no one came.
1. The tribe definitively separated from the ancients 1500 years ago, before the events of spm. After helping them create Flopside, apparently some members of this tribe remained in this city. 2- Surely, the castle being talked about here is Castle Bleck, (As seen in the part I wrote previously).
The founder of this tribe, as my theory says in the “Timeline” part, could be the son of the creator of the Pixls. Seeing that he brought the Dark Prognosticus with him after the Pixl War, he fled with the prophetic book, creating this infamous tribe. Although, a Japanese translation of one of Carson's stories suggests that before they split up and even before the Pixel War, there was a group with great magical power within the Tribe of Ancients, that is to say, this tribe was establishing itself in a time before we had imagined.
They stole it in order to research new magic and curses based on its contents... While others believe that they stole the book in order to keep it from those who wished to misuse it.
Blumiere's father were one of the main members of the Tribe of Darkness, or so it is theorized. One fact is that, in the Super Mario-Kun manga, you can see his silhouette, this being a corpulent figure, with a big mustache and wearing what looks like a bowler hat.
Tumblr media
Count Bleck is the last surviving member of the tribe itself, having destroyed the rest of the tribe after his father seemingly killed his loved one, a human descendent of the tribe of Ancients. In addition, it is hinted that Nastasia was originally a bat that was transformed into a member of the same species as Bleck, whom she had fallen for, which would make her a member of the Tribe of Darkness as well.
Their xenophobia is said to be based on pride at one point by Carson, although they were also concerned that their magic would become diluted if they married outside of the tribe. The japanese translation says:
"It seems that they were a tribe within the Tribe of Ancients that possessed exceptionally powerful magic. And it's said that they forbade marriage outside of the tribe out of fear of losing it. It seems that the Tribe of Darkness saw their magic as something to use for a "very important thing". Just what was that "very important thing"? Nowadays, we will never know."
My theory: This is where my theory comes in. After separating, the Tribe of Darkness continued to examine the Dark Prognosticus, finding the prophecy imminent. Blinded by power, they wanted to start it (Dimentio being a fundamental part of this). That's why he knows so much about the DP and the prophecy—things that not even Count Black knew about them. But they saw the great danger that it brought with it—that, instead of creating new worlds to rule, the prophecy was about the destruction of all worlds, all of them would reduce all existence itself until everything was erased as if it had never existed. That's why they prevented any member from opening the infamous book and forbade marriage outside the tribe. Up to the present: The events of Super Paper Mario. Didn't it seem suspicious that Count Bleck had always known about this macabre ending?

dark realization: dimentio manipulated every part of bleck's life from tripping him off the cliff to snitching out to bleck's father all so he could have someone summon the chaos heart for him
Ahh, you're back! Hello
OH THIS, this is gold, it's not my interpretation actually but it's good fanfic material 🗣️ Poor Count, but there is no shortage of laughter (?.
Now for that, how could the age calculation have been I wonder now, or I guess they both have different growth and while Dimentio grows slower, Bleck ages faster, although both are technically long-lived/immortal, If it's possible calculate their ages in human age, one is younger than the other respectively. Or I don't know, I would need more time to calculate it...
Dimentio was like "let's destroy this guy's life to get my Chaos Heart!.. Oh yeah, you're so smart".

Super Paper Mario Theory:
Theory: Grambi has not always been the ruler of the Overthere.
By: Drake Inferno and General Donitsky (Graphic by General Donitsky)
Tumblr media
Argument 1: Though Nimbis are immortal, they do age, albeit slowly. Luvbi, despite having been born “soon” after Jaydes and Grambi met (and thus being around 1500 years old) is still considered to be a child, and some Nimbis are said to be “young” or “grown up”.
Argument 2: Jaydes and Grambi are said to have met through work shortly before having Luvbi. The magic that controls life and death is called "Jaydes Magic", implying she has ruled the Underwhere since the dawn of life. If so, it would seem strange for the two to have never met until 1500 years ago if Grambi had ruled the Overthere for eons prior.
Argument 3: Rebbi, Yebbi, and Blubi, powerful Nimbis in governmental roles within the Overthere, all look significantly younger than Whibbi and Grambi, implying that leadership roles are not always held by the same Nimbis forever.
Argument 4: Hagnes tells the story of how she tried to gain Grambi's affection in her youth, and how ultimately Grambi fell in love with Jaydes instead. Her phrasing, emphasis of her own youth, and use of "fellow" appears to imply that he was not vastly older than her.
Argument 5: The mural of Grambi and Jaydes in the Flopside Pit of 100 Trials shows Grambi with a more brightly colored beard and eyebrows. Though this is a stylized depiction, other murals (like those of Croacus I or Merlee’s ancestor) account for the passage of time since their creation. Thus, the blue tint of Grambi’s hair in the mural could be meant to depict his appearance before it turned white.
