Percy couldn't stop smiling, his cheeks numb. He let out a little giggle. His cheeks were numb from smiling. That was so funny.

"What are you laughing about, you dunce?" Monty said, his words slurred and a hint of a smile in his voice. They were sprawled on their backs in Monty's yard, their favourite spot. Spot. Such a funny word.

"'S funny" Percy said, followed by another fit of giggles.

"What's so funny?" Monty was proper grinning now, his index finger pressing into Percy's cheek.

"Dunno, I forgot" His head was all fuzzy and felt like mashed potatoes. No, it felt like a turned over glass spilling water. That was it. Monty's laughter ringed in his ears, making his belly feel all warm. Percy smiled, "Monty". It had been Monty's idea to nick his dad's decanter. "Though it isn't stealing so much as borrowing since he's out of town. When he comes back it would be right where he left it", he had said with a grin and a mischievous glint in his eyes. Somehow, it hadn't made sense to Percy when he had said it, but it did now. "Borrow".

"Borrow what, darling?" Monty asked. Percy turned to look at him, the motion making him feel dizzier still. He hadn't realized he had said it out loud, he was about to explain that Monty's dad and his trip...but Monty's finger was still on his face and Percy couldn't quite remember what he was going to say. Monty's slim finger slid clumsily towards Percy's lips, and he wanted to lick it, but felt that he probably wouldn't do it if he wasn't drunk, because he was, right? He felt so at least. Not so much for the giddiness, and the warmth in his chest, he felt that all the time when he was with Monty. But the queasiness in his stomach and the wooziness of his brain were new, definitely. His pondering was cut however when Monty's finger pushed his lower lip, dragging it down, making it dance against his bottom teeth. Percy felt a spark of electricity where Monty's finger was touching him. It run down his spine, making him shiver. He really wanted to lick him. His finger, not Monty. (However, looking at the mop of golden locks on top of his forehead, at his soft, dimpled face, and his pink mouth, it didn't sound half bad. Not that it was his first time noticing. Or hundredth.) Percy laughed and Monty's finger slid inside his mouth, bumping his tongue. Percy stopped laughing, his heart suddenly thumping.

" M'Sorry," Monty said quickly and took his finger out.

 “‘S' fine" Percy slurred, the 's' sounding like a hiss. His heart rang in his ears, and the remnants of the burst of warmth he had felt spread on his every limb.

"Zounds, Perce, you are foxed" Monty laughed.

" M'not" but even he could hear the garble in his speech. He couldn't help but join Monty's laughter. "S'notfair"

"What's not fair, darling? My devilish handsome looks?" Monty said, pinching Percy's side. Percy squeaked and batted his hand away. It was bad enough when Monty touched him when he was sober, but now he had absolutely no control over his body. It was dangerous territory.

"S' not your firs' time," Percy said, a doe-eyed look on his face. He knew for a fact Monty loved this face. Monty reached out a hand and touched Percy's cheek again. Percy couldn't help but lean into it, he wanted to close his eyes, but maybe that was a tad too much. He closed them, anyways.

"You are right, Perce. And to be fair I did end up heaving my guts out the first time. So no need to worry, darling." And with that, his hand found Percy's. It wasn't new, they had held hands countless times before. But Monty's deft fingers going between the spaces of Percy's was new. Percy felt warm all over, from Monty's palm pressed flat against his, from his side mere inches from Monty, and his chest, he wasn't sure if it were the spirits or Monty, but his chest did feel awfully warm. He went with the first. Though as his head started to clear and his stomach settled, he knew it was the second. Monty, his best mate. The boy he was hopelessly in love with.

have never read the tlj series but i’m here to confess that i’m honestly kinda liking the cancelled trashy amazon prime adaptation even if it’s obvious it’s profiting off of booktok tropes because i find the weird narration kind of an endearing choice 😭 i do plan to read the series after and see how different it is and yeah there was no reason to make it tied to the books if they made it so different besides the ethianism because it’s historical fantasy anyway, everyone knows who lady jane grey is, and the books don’t have much a big fanbase..

wonder if “gentleman’s guide” wherever that is in development limbo, will suffer the same fate in this brainrot world, but i’ll still be seated pirating (joke intended)
