“Like Bonzo, Jones was already married with children. But Jones was also a softly-spoken middle-class Southerner; Bonzo a raucous, working-class Midlander. Yet somehow the two hit it off immediately. Even later on when Bonham was on a drunken rampage, Jones was rarely the target for his ire.

As he later told me, “Musically, we were very proud of our capabilities as a rhythm section. We’d listen and leave space for ourselves. There was a great deal of mutual respect. We were always incredibly locked in - phrasing the same and always coming to the same conclusion. The empathy we had when we played was always incredibly exhilarating. But then i was fortunate. I was playing with the best drummer i’d ever known, and i’d known most of them…”

Extract from “When Giants walked the Earth.” by Mick Wall ♡
“Watching Bonzo now, being able to hear the detail, to actually see him close-up working, it’s marvellous,’ agrees Jones.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“That was the thing about the smaller gigs. Drums get fairly unsubtle through a large PA. But in a smaller place like Albert Hall you can hear all the incredible detail he was always putting into his work. He was constantly varying, changing all the time. He was just such an exciting musician to play with. Some musicians hate if the drummer or one of the other musicians starts to diversify from the song, or go off into their own thing. But in Zeppelin, that was the whole point, and John was magnificent at that. He really kept you on your toes as a musician and a listener. That’s when the empathy becomes incredibly exhilarating.

He was the best drummer i’ve ever played with, bar none.”

“I still feel really comfortable playing with Paul, yes. We have all that history and it comes into play when we work together. You can’t just dismiss that. You’re never going to lose the closeness of those eight years we spent together. We played some great music and we were brothers; no matter what goes on up and down, we were very close. I don’t know of any other band who got that close. And we got that close because we loved each other and the pressure that only the Beatles had. No other band has had that much pressure. So all of those factors come into play when we meet each other. We know what went on. Nobody else knows. Everybody thinks they know, and they have ideas, and they write books about it, but actually only the Beatles know how heavy that was.
Paul and I used to work very hard. A lot of it fell into place, but the drummer and the bass player have a foundation to set, for everything else to be able to go on. And as I say, he is the most melodic bass player. He plays melodies within the melodies. He’s like the sea bed, or I’m the sea bed and he’s the bottom water, and everything goes up from there. Like bubbles.”

DID THE BEST PARTS OF THE WIZARD CALL IT A DAY IN 2003? IS CLASSIC WIZARD UNTOUCHABLE?
PIC(S) INFO: Resolution at 1048x1210 -- Mega spotlight on the rhythm section from cosmic hell, Mark Greening and Tim Bagshaw, the former original rhythm section for the mighty ELECTRIC WIZARD, and who later worked together for nine years in Stoner/DOOM/Sludge overlords, RAMESSES.
These photos were taken during rehearsals in 2014, in the band's post-WIZARD era.So, I'm not a big fan of post-power trio WIZARD in any way, shape, or form, and those dudes lost me in a big way after their "Let Us Prey" album, which I later warmed up to in a big way some years back. New WIZARD, on the other hand? Thanks, but no thanks.
