We started the day by talking about the software we'll be learning about over the next few weeks, these being InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, all Adobe products. We were told about some alternatives to these softwares, but the role each 3 of them will play in terms of what we produce. The most important part of the beginning of our session was the introduction to the MacOS. I've never really used MacOS extensively, so it's not as intuitive as what Windows is. AI wasn't particularly unfamiliar to me, as it was somewhat similar to other softwares I've used. I have a fair bit of experience in Adobe Substance Painter so the layout wasn't too dissimilar.

The image above is my notes about the differences between rasters and vectors, as well as some important shortcuts for the Mac.

This was our first task in AI to get a grasp of the controls and basic movements. We were taught the differences between vector and rasters and how this applies to what we're doing (as well as how to spot them!), alongside a whole bunch of shortcuts to different tools to make our process more efficient. The image above is how I edited the scaleable art once we were taught the tools of the program. Underneath is the file formats that are associated with, or the best, for exporting pixel format or scaleable art images.

Above is the list I made of shortcuts for Illustrator, as well as the list of appropriate file formats. I've also included examples as to what vectors/pixel graphics are best for (logos/icons and photos/things with lots of colours respectively).

After taking a break and setting up our Tumblr blogs, we started a practical task. First, as seen in the image above we drew six different straight line shapes with our pens. This was to give us an idea of how Illustrator, especially the pen tool, works different to how we may naturally draw in real life.

Here are some more shortcuts and notes about the pen tool and its features. We also covered bezier curves and how we use them to create vector images.

The final task of the day was us messing around with the pen tool, and specifically with the select and direct select tool. Overall it hasn't been particularly difficult to pick up, and I'm sure that muscle memory will come more with time (at least with the shortcuts). We shall see as we progress. 👍

First Session

Raster: Pixels, good for images with lots of photo detail that do not need to be scaled to a high level.

Vector: Infinitely scaleable, not made of pixels so can be zoomed in on without losing fidelity of image. Ideal for solid colours, simple graphics, typography.

I got to play with the coolest tool today. A shaper origins hand held cnc for adding graphics to my future foil board. I drew the graphic, converted to vector (sag), converted to routed design in the wood. My kind of fun.

Hello, I'm doing sprite edits in X-UX tyle but I lack experience in staging scenes. Do you recommend making objects and characters in SVG(scaleable vector graphic) or png format?

Tbh, I've never heard of SVG and just hope the png sprite I use has good quality to edit. But I guess??? I know you can make your own Khux character and the website I use has some of the khux and khdr backgrounds. But, I recommend PNG format since that is mostly what I use... (I'm on Android and Ipad so yeah)

Vector art can be defined as the mathematical algorithms to create simple drawings using different lines shapes and curves. Purpose of the Pen tool, the Brush tool and the Pencil tool when creating digital images

The Pen tool:

Adobe illustrator has a lot of tools which helps creating digital arts more efficiently. One of the major doors in illustrators is "pen tool". Pen tool is generally referred as the path creator which helps in creating path or lines specifically as per user demands and by any user can stroke it or turn it into selection easily. Pen tool uses plotted anchor points on a line to create it. The lines created by pen tool can be easily edited. It is appropriate to use as selection maker before giving it a stroke which helps decluttering art.

The Brush tool:

Also talking about tools, there's one essential for drawings as well as, it is the press tool that can be found in the tools palette which works similar as pencil tool where you click and by holding drag to make the path there are five major brushes in illustrator flat, bright,round,filbert and sable. We can make custom brushes as well ,brush tool is used to paint, on fill colour into the art. Different type of brushes different type of strokes as well.

The pencil tool:

Last but not least, pencil tool. Pencil tool used to draw lines freely and it creates hard edges. It is similar to the brush tool and the pencil tool but the pencil tool does not creates fuzzy egdes, pencil tool is mostly used for artistic sketching and for general graphic or even notes. Pencil tool drawers single-pixel airtime.

Vectorize Art

The term "vectorize art" refers to artwork made up of vector graphics. These visuals make up points, lines, curves, and forms based on mathematical calculations. When you scale a vector picture file, it doesn't lose quality and doesn't lose resolution, so you may stretch it to any size you require. It's a great tool for placing corporate logos on business cards, designing posters, and photo editing in Adobe Photoshop. They provide clean, scaleable graphics with the extra benefit of functionality, allowing for intriguing aesthetic possibilities. Vectors are nearly exclusively used in modern typography.

Where Design And Vector Graphics Collide

Because both designers and artists use vectors, it's crucial to grasp the differences.

Designer: When creating commercials, websites, or anything else that involves the careful organization of text, pictures, and other structural aspects, designers consider overall composition. Designers employ vector artwork created by artists in these compositions or generate their vector art for the designs. A designer can build a vector-based design that combines several separate vector artwork components.

Illustrators are more art-focused and generate individual images rather than exclusive designs. Individual pieces of vector art created by illustrators can stand alone or be incorporated into another work by a graphic designer.

Week Three - Class Content

Adobe Illustrator

This week in class we were introduced to Adobe Illustrator. Unlike Photoshop, Illustrator doesn’t work in pixels. It is a vector based software that can create scaleable graphics, which means that elements don’t lose quality when resized. The lab explained a number of different features of illustrator, including file formats, art boards, layers, and colour. We practiced using specific tool, such as the pen tool, shape making tools, pathfinder tool, brush tools, and the width tool. Although I have some experience with Illustrator, some of the tools I hadn’t used before or hadn’t used in a long time. The lab was very helpful in explaining the program.

This is a screenshot of the pathfinder explanation which I found extremely helpful. I have used the pathfinder tool in indesign before, however illustrator has more options that can be used in a variety of ways. This is a guide that I will refer back to often when using illustrator, as the pathfinder tool can create some interesting effects and make processes easier.

For self directed learning, we will be practicing our illustrator skills by creating graphic assets for our designer. These will be posted on my blog with annotations when completed. I will also start roughly planning some timeline layouts and colours in my workbook.

Experimenting With Distorting Imagery In Adobe Illustrator (as opposed to Adobe Photoshop)

When I began placing in my ‘distorted’ patterns created from wood carving, which was then vectorised in Adobe Illustrator before being further edited in Adobe Photoshop, I noticed the imagery was not of the highest quality. Ultimately, by having further edited within Adobe Photoshop, the images were no longer scaleable graphics (vectors). 

Subsequently, I decided to explore the editing options within Adobe Illustrator itself (see images above). Additionally, I explored the slower/more tedious process of vectorising in Adobe Illustrator, distorting in Adobe Photoshop, and then vectorising again in Adobe Illustrator. Both approaches worked appropriately but one ultimately became more timely in undertaking.

This NFT is going to the moon

Every LiL Moon Rocket has over 10 unique traits. Each of the 13337 NFTs is therefore unique. Launching on Binance Smart Chain instead of Ethereum
