the two biggest pieces of advice that i would express to anyone thinking about grad school are

1) do not pay for grad school. i am dead serious on this one. this was the number one thing every single professor i had in undergrad expressed to me. going to a grad school that doesn’t offer tuition remission or teaching or any type of funding so you can complete the work you need to do is not worth going into debt for don’t do it don’t do it don’t do it because—

2) besides the obvious (the degree) grad school offer you two things (ideally they offer both); training or access. by training i mean rigorous high level hands on practice honing your skills in your chosen field; by access i mean connection to people/institutions/funding to help support whatever work or research you’re doing. (i think that at least in the arts broadly speaking, it is easier to find training than it is to gain access.) i think it’s extremely important to weigh out what you’re getting out of a specific program and decide not only what is more important to you but also what opportunities a school is offering you

"Would you zip it?! She's fine! It's just a bloody nose from her nose being so dry--the inside skin is sensitive and a small blood vessel was probably ruptured. It sounds and looks bad but honestly it's not a serious thing."

"...are you sure?" they fearfully asked.

"Positive. I get the same thing all the time when sick. It'll go away in a few minutes. Now for future reference just give the kid lots of tissues and have them hold it to their nose. Keep their head facing forward; if they tilt back the blood will flow into their throats, and if they tilt forward they'll bleed more."

"...understood."

"Good. Now maybe go apologize to Agnes for traumatizing her for the past 5 minutes."

"That's a good idea."

"I'll give her some of my blood as an apology."

"...that's nice but maybe don't."

“Ah, hi there,” Danny finally managed to say. He gave a little wave of his fingers at the small face staring at him from around Jason’s legs. He also tucked his wings closer against his back. The wings had to be what had her looking at him with that sort of shocked wonder like that. It wasn’t every day— “Are you a new grandpa?!” Danny blinked. “I—sorry, what?” Lian dashed out from behind Jason and over to him where she stood at his feet with her hands up. What else was he supposed to do? He picked her up, perching her carefully on one of his arms and keeping his other hand behind her back to balance her. Unconsciously, one of his wings curled around her, but she didn’t even seem to notice. She was too busy pressing her small, chubby hands against his cheeks. “I have Grandpa Bruce—” (which came out more like ‘Bwuce’) “—and Grandpa Oli—” (‘Ohwee’) “—and Greatpa Alfie!” ('Owfee') Lian explained. “And you’re old like Bruce and Oli but not so so so old like Alfie and you’re here, so you must be a new grandpa! What’s your name?” Danny could feel the blush heating up his face. “I’m Danny, but—” She threw her arms up in the air and Danny scrambled to keep her balanced. “Grandpa Danny!”
