Handsome Caitlyn Week Day 2: Formal/Uniform

“I’ve scheduled the tailor to come for a fitting before the gala next week,” Cassandra announced as the family sat down to breakfast, primly setting her napkin in her lap. “I want to ensure we have enough time to get everything hemmed properly.”

Caitlyn picked at her eggs with her fork, humming in vague agreement, hoping that Cassandra wouldn’t linger on the subject. She didn’t want to think about whatever monstrosity the tailor had concocted for her this time. Cassandra always insisted that the Kirammans attend the annual gala as a unit, which meant that Caitlyn was often just a miniature of whatever Cassandra wanted to wear. The last gown had had a high, lacey collar that had itched all night, and stiff sleeves that made it hard to raise her hand more than a few inches. Its skirt had been voluminous thanks to the piles of petticoats underneath, which she’d tripped over while coming down the stairs, sending her down the final steps in an inelegant wobble.

She’d felt like a fool, and that had been before the growth spurt that made her tower above everyone else in her class.

So as she watched the tailor unpack his accoutrements in their sitting room later that day, Caitlyn’s expectations weren’t just low–they were nonexistent. Still, she forced herself to smile politely when he directed her towards the dressing screen, where she stripped off her shirt and trousers without so much as a glance at the clothes he had so carefully hung just a moment ago.

Eventually, though, she had to face her fate.

Sighing, Caitlyn reached for the clothes, then did a double-take. For a moment, she worried that the tailor had gone rogue, because what was hanging inside the dressing screen was decidedly not what she’d been expecting, not remotely close to what she’d worn every year since she’d been deemed old enough to attend galas such as this one.

There wasn’t a single ruffle, for one thing. Instead, there was a smooth blouse tucked inside a neat, sharp blazer, the cut not unlike what Tobias would likely be wearing. The Kiramman crest had been embroidered on the blazer’s collar, golden thread bright against the familiar shade of blue, matched by the small, delicate chain draped artfully across the other shoulder. There was still a skirt, but there were no petticoats to go with it, only a simple pair of heeled boots peeking out from the bottom.

Caitlyn stared, open-mouthed, until Cassandra’s voice drifted through the screen.

“Is everything alright, Caitlyn?” she asked, and that was when Caitlyn knew it wasn’t a mistake, that Cassandra had commissioned these clothes for her, the slight, almost imperceptible note of smug amusement in her mother’s voice making it loud and clear.

Suddenly, Caitlyn couldn’t pull the clothes on fast enough. The blouse was like butter on her skin, and when she experimentally swung her arms forward and up, she was delighted to feel no pinching of fabric forcing her to keep them close to her side. She stepped into the skirt, delighted again when the hem settled neatly below her knees, but not so far down that there was any risk of tripping over it as she came out from behind the screen.

Immediately, Cassandra’s sharp eye was on her. Caitlyn was struck again with irrational worry, but she straightened her shoulders, returning Cassandra’s critical stare with her own while she waited for the final verdict.

It came a moment later, a quick, barely-there nod. Their gazes caught, Caitlyn’s wide grin met with a fleeting but real smile, before Cassandra turned back to the tailor.

“We’ll have to mind the sleeves, but this is excellent work, as usual…”

The tailor preened under the praise, nodding and following Cassandra back towards the rest of the clothes, discussing this or that detail that Caitlyn did not pay attention to. Her eyes were fixed forward, on her own reflection now visible in the mirror.

Her first thought was that she looked older. But then she realized that no, that wasn’t quite right. The ease in her posture had nothing to do with age. She felt, for once, comfortable in this new body of hers. Her rapidly growing legs, the wide set of her shoulders, didn’t feel quite so monstrous without the overlay of fabric and bows that Cassandra favored for herself.

She stepped closer, moving easily without the pinch of a tight blouse across her shoulders. She smoothed down the hem of her blazer, took in the set of the Kiramman blue against her skin, and felt a grin spread across her face.

Damian showing him all his artwork because he knows that he will get the brightest smile and a “That looks beautiful sweetheart” every time

Dick being so excited to bring his dad to his gymnastics show because he knows that Bruce will start crying every time he lands a trick, without fail, and that means the women that come to watch will have someone else to fuss over

Someone at WE mentioning they don’t trust Tim because of his age and Bruce immediately scheduling a company wide meeting so he can express just how exceptional his son is. Tim’s face is the most red it has ever been the entire time

Cass doesn’t even have to do anything, he is just always looking at her with a fond little smile and on the verge of tears but sometimes, when she wants a little more then normal, she will take one of Jason’s books and read as much as she can aloud. That man absolutely loses it and hugs her as tight as he can while sobbing about how far his baby has come

Jason acts like he couldn’t care less about Bruce’s support, but the first time he overhears Bruce talking about him at a gala, telling some rich idiot who was questioning business decisions that Jason is the most competent man he has ever known and would trust him with not only the WE weapons department but his life, Jason pointedly does not look at Dick, who has a shit eating grin on his face, and walks as fast as he can to the bathroom

The best part is that Bruce doesnt even have to try he is just genuinely that proud of them

This was the last time she saw of her mother.

This part when the casket was closing Caitlyn was not only on the verge of breaking into tears but she was also inching her head to see her mother's face a little more before she couldn't see her again 💔

These two clashed in just about every scene they shared, never able to see eye-to-eye. And now with Cassandra dead, Caitlyn will never have another chance to bridge the gap with her mother. So many things left unsaid. And This is so sad Imagine losing a parent who wasn't easy on you and yet she loves you so much

I hc that after Bruce’s infamous spine-breaking fight with Bane, all the Batkids pitch in and get Bruce one of those super bougie gamer chairs for the Bat-Computer. Like this thing is all leather, it’s got cup holders and LED lights, and that bad boy swivels smoother than butter.

It’s also bright fucking red. Robin red.

I feel like something that should have been explored more in Arcane is that despite the dangers and pretty much horrific conditions, Zaun children seemingly grow up a lot more caring and have a larger understanding of family in comparison to Piltover children. And if such a reflection of the real world in a sense.

The kids of Zaun seemingly grow up with a lot more adult support. Ekko is easily welcomed under Benzo’s wings. Vander adopts 4 kids (two of which we learn he knew of before their parents death, two of which we can’t be sure of). Silco, despite all what happened, and his ulterior motives, shows no problem adopting Powder/Jinx. In the alternate universe it seems as though he’s still played a part in the kids lives. Jinx adopts Isha easily and Sevika cares for her as well. Hell, even Mr. War Crimes Against Humanity does well with little Viktor (until ya know, the animal abuse).

Hell, up until Vander dies (the first time) there seems to be a large understanding of if there’s an orphan or a kid in need of guidance, take them in! (And certainly don’t inform them of your plans to turn a giant pink salamander into drugs and be confused when a nine year old doesn’t understand). If a kid wants to be your apprentice, let them! For the most part, until things all went wrong in the end of act 1 of season 1, the worst parts of Zaun seem pretty typical for any city in poverty.

Match that with what we see with how Caitlyn and Jayce grow up. Caitlyn is given adult support, yes, and it’s clearly a good adult mentor, but it’s not entirely by her choice. It’s been chosen for her. She’s safe, but there’s a lack of freedom of choice. Meanwhile, when Jayce gets older, and that same accident in Act 1 happens, the family that supported him and his mom turns their backs. His own mom doesn’t support him either, because she’s afraid of what he’s talking about, but also because he’s damming them to being outcasts.

Conversely, Vander is more than willing to take the fall for what Claggor, Milo, Vi and Powder did. He’s willing to go to prison for a long time, in order for them to have a better future. Despite Vi’s best efforts, he’s not going to listen to her (she is just a kid) and he’s not letting his family go down and get hurt.

Meanwhile, a man who grew up in this mentality, where there’s a wide sense of family support from people who aren’t your biological family, is the one to go to Jayce, a stranger, and tells him he believes in him. It’s why it’s such a shock to Jayce; his own family and family friends denied him. They didn’t support him.

I think that’s what makes all the difference. Piltover and Zaun have wildly different understandings of family and forgiveness. For Piltover, it shuns and damns the lives of those who upset the balance. For Zaun, it provides safety and never ending understanding.

The fun thing about Cass not appearing much in the og Birds of Prey while Babs is literally parenting her over in Batgirl at the same time is that it creates a potential situation where Barbara can be ranting to Ted or Jason Bard about how this damn kid won't eat their veggies because they just want burgers instead and keeps performing risky moves in combat and runs away when Babs touches on mental health but at least they'll let Babs tuck them into bed at night if they're tired enough and Ted/Jason etc is like awww I didn't know you were a mom now!

Babs: What? I'm not a mom I'm just looking out for this kid because she needs someone.

Dinah: You had to take an hour off last week to take them to the dentist and another hour the week before to teach them how to spell and pronounce commonly used legal jargon.

Ted: Wow! How young is this kid? Should they be out crime fighting?

Every robin has died once. Except, in this universe, they don't come back. Bruce has already long since hung up the cowl, unable to stand being the Bat after Tim's death, having to bury another child of his own.

When Damian comes along, he thinks he has one last chance, to be an actual dad, to be a good father. When Damian finds his way into the dusty, abandoned Batcave one night, Bruce is horrified.

Because he finds Damian wearing pieces of all the robin suits. Dick's shirt, Jason's gloves, Cass's cape, Barbara's mask, Tim's pants, and Steph's boots. He looks just like all the boy robins, and his hair doesn't help with how he looks like Cassandra.

Damian is only 10, so parts of the suit drape over his body. He looks just like the other robins, Bruce can hardly hold back a choked sob. Damian doesn't understand why Bruce is shaking when looking at him.

"Father? What is wrong?" Damian asks cautiously, head tilted to the side in the same way Dick used to do. Bruce's heart clenches.

"...How did you...find this place? It's sealed off." Bruce answers Damian's question with another, brows furrowing. He made sure any records of this place were destroyed, and that there was no way inside.

Damian looks at Bruce like he's stupid, placing his hands on his hips and looking around.

"They showed me!" Damian says like it's obvious, not explaining who 'they' is. He waves a hand at the empty air around him.

Bruce feels a chill crawl up his spine. "Who's they, Damian?" He regrets asking as soon as it slips from his mouth, the air around them growing even colder.

"The robins!" Damian says with a huff, pouting and crossing his arms over his chest. And suddenly, Bruce is engulfed in warmth. As if he was being hugged from all sides. It's enough to break him.

Does Cass have a civilian job or even much of a civilian identity? I sometimes saw her work as a ballet dancer but that was fanfiction so idk were that comes from

Cass doesn't have a job, or much of a civilian identity! In fact, one of the main early sources of tension between Bruce & Babs, as well as Babs & Cass, is that Babs wanted Cass to have a life outside Batgirl and Cass/Bruce didn't. Early on, Cass was very cavalier about her 'secret identity' (Cass didn't actually have one because her father had hidden her from the world). It's only after Stephanie dies in War Games and Cass moves to Bludhaven that she starts thinking about her life outside the mask, mostly thanks to Onyx's advice! Then she begins to befriend civilians such as Brenda, a waitress, and Zero, a love interest.

This civilian stuff is sadly interrupted by Bludhaven blowing up + her turning evil, and I don't think anything since then has picked up this thread. Also, even at the peak of her civilian life (in Gabrych's Bludhaven run), jobs literally never cross her mind. I honestly cannot imagine her working a civilian job like she would much rather be kicking butt and saving lives than working in a cubicle (she would DEFINITELY not do a 9-5). We'll see whether Batgirl (2024) gives her more of a civilian identity, but yeah I do not see Cass actually wanting or doing an occupation long-term.

As for where the 'ballet dancer' comes from, Cass falls in love with ballet in Batman & Robin: Eternal and Tynion's Detective Comics (2016)! But ballet is more of a hobby for her than a job, and I really don't think she'd actually go into ballet academy or something - ballet has been a bit overemphasised in the fandom tbh. Because ballet for Cass is associated with expression (and feminine community as I argued in another post), I don't think she'd enjoy the strict routines or choreo that ballet dancers have to do.
