The Path of Courage, Part 7

The Serpentine Fae strikes toward Melryn! Melryn dodges to the side, barely dodging those sharp fangs. Melryn notices that the fangs drip with venom! Melryn backhands the Serpentine Fae with her Left Gauntlet of Courage!

The Serpentine Fae does a graceful backward cartwheel, lessening the impact of the slap while also kicking out at Melryn! The Serpentine Fae's sharp claws scratch Melryn on the cheek!

Melryn's right hand goes up to her cheek. She sees blood. Anger boils up in Melryn, turning into DETERMINATION. Melryn charges forward, giving the Serpentine Fae a brutal uppercut with the Left Gauntlet of Courage, knocking out one of the creature's fangs!

The Serpentine Fae is filled with RAGE. How DARE this lowly farmhand knock out one of her beautiful fangs?! The Serpentine Fae seems to grow in size, her legs merging together to become a single snake tail. The claws on her fingertips lengthen and turn black.

Melryn, a hand on her bleeding cheek, watches. A smile crosses her face, completely at odds with the fact that there is a massive Serpentine Fae before her, intent on eviscerating her!

The Serpentine Fae slashes at Melryn, who barely dodges. Melryn, for some reason, slaps the back of the Serpentine Fae's hand.

The Serpentine Fae slashes again, and Melryn jumps onto the creature's hand and climbs up her arm! The Serpentine Fae lashes out with her fangs, but Melryn jumps off of the creature just in time!

The Serpentine Fae breaks her other fang on her own thick hide! Full of unrestrained RAGE, the Serpentine Fae begins to grow larger, but stops. She notices that her right hand and arm are smoking. The Serpentine Fae looks at the limb with mingled confusion and horror. It has smears of bronze blood on it from when Melryn was climbing on it.

Melryn lets out a chuckle, a shadow falling over her face. "Y'all know what's in blood, right?" All that one can see of Melryn's face is her shining eyes, brimming with DETERMINATION.

The Serpentine Fae looks in horror at Melryn.

Melryn continues to speak. Just one word. One deadly word that shakes any fae to its core. "Iron."

The Serpentine Fae lets out a horrible scream, which is cut off by Melryn jumping up and kicking the Serpentine Fae in the throat with her Steel-Toed Workboots.

The Serpentine Fae falls backward, on the verge of unconsciousness.

Melryn stands over the creature. "I reckon I'll letcha live. Try this again, an' I ain't gonna be so nice."

Melryn picks up one of the creature's lost fangs and walks away. The thing is about the size of a kitchen knife. "Glad I didn't get bit..."

Melryn obtained one Fae-Fang Dagger!

It’s crazy how powerful understated confidence is tbh like I have never looked at someone who was very cool & sure in their choices & truly judged them for it. I’m no saint & I have been skeptical ab things before, but the minute someone’s like “yeah but it’s the right choice for me” “it’s what I think is best for me specifically” “I truly believe in this decision” all my misgivings melt away bc truly nothing can stand in the face of silent, assured confidence. And obviously convincing others to see your pov isn’t the point, but I’ve always found I’m far more impacted by that than I am by anyone who feels the need to justify their choices or seek constant validation from people who don’t understand their specific circumstances. There isn't really so much room for a risk... When you already spent so much time doing it, or to be exact imagining it, in your mind, putting yourself in the shoes of those that you were silently jealous of. Their life so different from yours.

There isn't much to check, control, be sure of. Simply because consciously and unconsciously you waited for this, you prepared yourself. Going through every way it might feel and be. It's not uncertain, it's not improvised and sudden - you were and are ready for this. You only can't find the courage to make that first step, leaving your current live behind.

But it's not so tragic, it only feels like it. Because it's something so new but at the same time that one thing that you wanted and missed for so long. But it won't be this life or that, this beginning or your older path. Nothing will collapse, shift so drammatically, leaving you without any way out of it if you won't feel convinced about this new journey and opportunity in your life.

In reality it will be much more subtle, gentle, step by step. Because this is just an opportunity for you, a chance, to taste and check this idea and desire that you've had. It's a possibility to understand it more, finally feel it, instead of only dreaming and imagining. So you can really decide if this is something of which you would like to have and experience more.

And if it will not be... If it will be so different from the image that you painted in your mind... You will still be able to make steps back. To your old but for this reason safer life. Where you will have the time to calm down and rest, getting ready for a new idea that you will want to try.

It is not really a matter of is it safe or not... It's more about whether you will decide it to be one. Whether you will allow yourself to take this path, this opportunity and chance for something more and different... Even if there is so much that is uncertain and uncomfortable for your anxious and still so inexperienced mind.

It depends on whether you will go for it, finally and fully being aware of the fact that, as always, one way or another, you will make it work. Enjoying this journey, using those scary or confusing parts of it to transform it in something even more exiting and beautiful. Something that is worth to be proud of, of the fact that you lived and experienced it on your own.

It depends on whether you will allow this chance to help you to come out of this shell, this old and tiring life that so ironically you got used to, to the point of being afraid of letting it go. It depends on whether you will allow yourself to simply enjoy it, without thinking already now, before making even the first step, of all the obstacles and turns that you might need to face.

It depends on all of this, it depends on you. Simply because your heart and mind are so powerful. To the point that they are shaping an experience that you yet still need to do. Something that you have so little information and idea of... But that you can already picture so well in all those worse scenarios and chaos that your mind shows.

It depends on you. Because this chance it's something that you truly earned, worked, planned and dreamed hard for. But that in the same way you can deny yourself, letting it go before even holding it in your arms that deserve it all. All the emotions, positive or negative. All the moments, new and old.

All the changes and even more beginnings that this journey holds for you. And that to receive you need only and simply to allow yourself. Allow yourself to find the courage for this first step only once.

We could look at this opportunity from all the different perspectives. We could look at the future, at what it holds for you if you follow this path... The Path of Courage, Part 6

Finally arriving at home after her travels, Melryn dons the gauntlet. The material is a translucent, silver-blue, almost glassy metal. As she flexes her hand, the gauntlet seems to shrink to fit. Testing her dexterity, Melryn snaps her fingers. The sound of metal on metal is much louder than expected, and the air in front of her shimmers. Melryn clutches her suddenly aching head and stumbles forward, accidentally stepping into the strange shimmer. Melryn's head aches worse than ever, and she falls to her hands and knees--

The world around Melryn seems to shift. Her headache subsides. Melryn scrambles back to her feet and stares around. She knows this place... She has seen it in a dream. Perhaps a dream of a dream? No, that doesn't make sense. Dreams aren't real. Are they?

A dirt road stretches to the horizon. On either side are boundless fields of grain. Far above, a gentle sun casts its rays down to kiss the land. Clouds swirl and dance in alluring patterns.

A breeze rustles past, causing the grain stalks to undulate like the sea. Up ahead and to the left, there is a strange pattern in the grain. Melryn makes her way toward it. As she approaches, she sees it. A strange pattern of grain that has been pressed down. A crop circle.

Melryn carefully enters the circle, investigating it. As she does so, the grain stalks rustle off to her right. She looks over and sees a figure. The figure is that of a gorgeous woman with shining black hair and striking green eyes. She approaches Melryn, but something is wrong. Those eyes...

Melryn snaps out of her trance. Those eyes are the slitted eyes of a snake. Melryn raises her fists. What a time to not have a weapon. The strange woman's ears elongate, and her nose flattens and becomes a pair of slits. The woman appears to be some sort of fae!
