Sweet Creature

Azriel x Fem!Reader
Summary - The bond snaps after a rather brutal breakup, and after witnessing you with another Vanserra, Azriel is trying to find a way to avoid being hurt once again.
Warnings - fluff, angst, pining, swearing, unrequited love, heartbreak, sad Az, happy ending (yay!)
Word count - 8.4k (oops)
Based on this ask

It had become so intense in the House of Wind that you had little to no choice in moving yourself to the River House. Between Nesta and Cassian's bustling sex life and the constant bickering arguments between Azriel and Elain, you decided that you needed some peace.
And fast.
Rhys had welcomed you at the door that day, his sort-of sister in arms surrounded by brown leather bags that he could almost envision you launching down the House of Wind steps just to escape as fast as possible. Flipping him off and smirking at his chuckle, you slipped around his form stood in the doorway and headed right to Nyx who was more than thrilled to see you, babbling incoherently and grabbing for you the moment you were in eyeshot.
"I take it that it's getting a bit loud over there?" Rhys turned to you, his shirt half unbuttoned and hands burrowed into his pockets. He was lucky. To have a mate and a child. To not have to live with the band of animals currently residing in the Night Court's most opulent residence.
"How am I supposed to get anything done wedged between that lot?" Nyx smiled at your cooing, lapping up all of your love and affection, "I'd much rather be here with my favourite prince."
Within minutes, your bags were taken upstairs by Rhys who was grumbling to himself about never being able to have any peace to which you blissfully quipped that you'd be out of his hair the moment he bought you a lavish apartment in the city. It wasn't as if he couldn't afford it after all.
Your position within the Inner Circle was irreplaceable. Not only were you Rhys' childhood best friend, the only one he could truly depend on before Cassian and Azriel flew into the picture, but you were also known as a witch. A powerful celestial being that had the capability to destroy and create as you saw fit with an affinity to sky and water magic.
The scales could have tilted in the wrong direction had you truly taken up Amarantha's offer to be her pet, the only reason you had confined yourself to that chamber Under The Mountain was to make sure that Rhys survived, and you played your part well, just as you always had.
A break was needed, the air in the House of Wind was almost suffocating, and no amount of your power was able to drown it. Elain was spending more time with Lucien, her mate, and Azriel was not happy about it considering that they were meant to be in a committed relationship. The barking insults and shouting had become too much to bare, so intense that your own power was itching for release in order to silence them for at least a couple of minutes.
"They're going to break up, aren't they?" Rhys certainly wouldn't be the first to tell Azriel I told you so, but he'd certainly be thinking it when the Shadowsinger would inevitably return to the River House just like you had to escape the nightmare of his life.
Humming softly, sadly, you looked up at Rhys, your godson in your arms resting his head on your chest, "I think so. Az hasn't been himself lately."
It was true, your friend had become a shell of himself, wallowing in self-loathing and doubt, and you cursed Elain eternally for turning him into such a thing. How anyone could hurt Azriel was beyond your scope of realisation, he was perfect in every way, devoted, kind, caring, and definitely a force to be reckoned with in the bedroom if your ears served you right.
Being attracted to Azriel was a natural bodily response, you had told yourself at least, it was difficult to not want to jump the bones of the illustrious Shadowsinger who kept a watchful eye on your every step. Like he was waiting for his moment to swoop in and save you.
But you had never needed saving, and you never would.
Elain and you had never really gotten along, it wasn't as though you hadn't tried to be friendly with the Made sister, she just couldn't stand to be around you. Maybe her own abilities clashed with yours, perhaps she was terrified of you. You couldn't blame her, the idea of you was one that stalked travellers and gifted nightmares to the young.
A celestial witch. In the flesh.
Anyone who knew you well enough would be able to dispel any wrongful intent, but Elain was not one of those people.
"I did warn him," Rhys' finger drifted to hook itself around Nyx's outstretched hand, and he shook it gently as he continued on, "A mating bond is not something to get entangled with."
"Az needs us to be his friends right now, Rhys. A breakup on its own is awful, but when it's so close, when he's been waiting so long for it, it's bound to hurt."
A firm hand on your shoulder comforted you, you knew how tough it must be for Azriel to go through it, after how painful it was to hold out hoping that he would be enough to suddenly not be, "I know, Witchling," you scoffed at the nickname as you always had and always would, Rhys pressed a dainty kiss into your hair, like a brother to a newly born sister, "Whatever he needs, I'm here, and so are you."
If you had known what awaited you that week, you'd take the telling words back in a second.
Like you had guessed, Azriel moved back into the River House, residing in his own room across the hall from your own. And boy, was he a raincloud if you ever did see one. Even his shadows looked solemn, and they didn't have faces. Azriel looked positively awful, constantly messy hair, large bags of onyx that imprinted onto the skin beneath his usually warm hazel eyes that had turned into nothing but dark pools of heartbroken sadness.
In the night, you had heard him crying, you'd stood outside of his door, not saying a word, but hoping that he knew that someone was there for him even if he didn't want them to be.
You had tried to talk to him, to coax him out of his haze by offering to train with him, or walk with him along the banks of the Sidra, you'd even asked him if beating your ass whilst you wore a mask of Lucien would bring a smile to his face. Unfortunately, everything you had tried had failed you, and you were at a loss as to help your friend.
"Honestly Rhys, how do you reach anything in here?" Rhys was hovering in the doorway, eyebrow raised with delight as he watched you try and scale the countertops to reach the top shelf of the cupboard.
There were chocolate chips for your cookies up there, and they had your name all over them.
"It's not my fault you're not Illyrian," his eyes darkened into a smirk, "Why don't you just hop onto your broomstick and fly?"
Even a silent Azriel emitted a gasp from his place on the opposite side of the centre island. If there was one thing you hated, it was being likened to the witches children sang about in their storybooks. It offended you how utterly unalike you were, and it made you seethe when someone, usually Rhys or Cassian, would use that hatred to rile you up.
"Oh," you stood on the countertop, towering over the High Lord by a few mere inches, "Is that why all of the doorways are so wide? Because your fat fucking head needs all the room it can get?"
Rhys stood speechless before you, the room fell silent.
Then a laugh.
Not yours of Rhys', you had to check it wasn't you making any noise before your eyes landed on the owner of the most joyful thing you'd heard in weeks.
A smile. Curled parted lips as a howling laugh ripped through them. Azriel's shadows danced to the sound, and his body shook with it. You could have cried, but you kept it together, you choked down your happiness to witness the momentary return of the one who meant the most to you.
It was no secret that you used to be Azriel's favourite. There was nothing that the two of you wouldn't do together, even if it was a medial task like taking you to the bakery or finding you a new Starfall dress that would make Mor dim in comparison. Azriel was always happy to come along. Until Elain, and then you had stopped seeing another, you'd drifted so far apart that he didn't even properly greet you anymore, all you were adorned with was a curt nod and tight lipped smile before Elain would whisk him away.
The male in front of you was nothing like that one, not in that singular glimmer of hope at least. Once his laughter died down, and a serene smile planted itself on his lips, Azriel opened his eyes and moved them to you, they glowed with something you couldn't quite understand, and then they widened. His eyes faltered. His smile faded.
Azriel gasped.
"Mate."
Darting your line of sight to Rhys, you pointed at him, flickering your gaze back to Azriel who had rose from his seat "Him?"
Rhys swatted your finger away, "I'm mated, y/n," Rhys glanced between you and took a step backward.
"So?" It couldn't be. Not right now. Not now.
"I can't do this," Azriel was struggling to breathe, his chest was rising and falling rapidly, sweat beaded at his brow and his skin had paled.
Scrambling down from the worktop, you went to take a step toward him, one that he mirrored in the opposing direction, furling his wings behind his back and clawing his shadows into submission, "Don't, Az. I can go."
The visible wince of pain that shot through you was enough for Azriel to suck in a breath and disappear from sight. The bond was dull, a golden thread soaring across the night sky to meet a shield of inked darkness. Azriel had closed you off. Shut you out.
Silence befell the kitchen, the chocolate chips you had gotten from the top shelf now scattered across the dark oak wood beneath your bare feet. Rhys had never seen you cry, he almost thought it impossible, but then he saw that single tear roll down your cheek, he could feel the pain radiating from you from finding your mate for him only to run from you.
"Hey, it's alright," he wrapped you into his arms, shushing you softly as he ran his fingers through your hair to soothe the quiet sobs rattling your shoulders, "It's going to be fine, y/n. Azriel's just confused, he'll be thrilled soon. Just you wait."
The snap had been gentle, like you had just come home after a long day, like you'd stepped through the door to see everyone you had ever loved all in one place and he was at the epicentre of it. Safe. Warm. Perfect.
Being a witch, you were never sure how life would look for you. Not even the cauldron understood your kind, you had always thought that perhaps the cauldron overlooked your species for the things most pure, like mating bonds and children. Witchlings were rare, you were the lone example of it, perhaps a part of you thought that you weren't allowed to have any love or joy, that you weren't good enough for it.
And there it was right in front of you, with the male a part of you had always yearned for, dancing in ash.

In the weeks that followed, Azriel did all he could to avoid you. No reason was good enough to make Azriel even glance in your direction let alone utter anything to you.
It had gotten to the point where you had asked Rhys for the keys to the cabin, you packed up your things and stepped through time to stand on that cold wooden floor with moonlight drifting through the small square windows.
You’d never thought that you could ever feel so alone, but as you stood there in a cabin so cold that you could see your own breath, the loneliness certainly began to set in.
There was little else to do other than light a fire to warm the little cabin on the outskirts of the city and run a bath; the tub was surrounded by candles, the ottoman at the foot of it was full of scented oils and salts which made your heart flutter. At least if you were to wallow in your own heartbreak you’d be able to do it smelling like the ocean surrounded by candlelight.
Bubbles crept up your neck as you sank into the wooden tub, it should have been a tranquil moment for you, but it was far from it in reality.
Az, please. Just talk to me. I'm still y/n, I'm still your friend. Things don't have to change.
Instead of enjoying the alone time like you should have considering that it was rare to have a minute of peace in a city full of needy children, you sat and let your mind wonder just how everything had gotten so messed up. You understood his confusion, really, you did, you understood how conflicting it must have been for him to separate with Elain, the female he was ready to spend the rest of his existence with, to then find out he was mated to you, not just you as his friend, but you as a witch.
Talk to me.
Too many tears had been spilled, you couldn't stop them from flowing from your eyes each time Azriel would fumble some excuse to get away from you. The bond was cold, it was like trying to break through a shield, an icy 10 foot deep floor that wouldn't even crack under whatever you would throw at it.
If you need me to leave then I will, Az. I'll leave for you, so you can have space, so you can think.
In the weeks that followed the revelation, you'd done all you could to try and get through to him, to let him know that you weren't expecting him to accept it, that he could take all the time he needed to process everything before speaking to you, all you needed was a sign that he was listening to you, that you mattered. It didn't surprise you that Azriel hadn't exactly thought about you in the predicament, of what it had done to you, and you couldn't even be angry at him over it because you'd be the same.
It didn't mean that it didn't hurt though.
Dark skies littered with blinking starlight was cast overhead, too beautiful to be real, too beautiful that you were sure that it was some kind of abstract painting on a black canvas. The cabin used to be one of your favourite places, Azriel and you used to escape there frequently, spending nights upon nights drinking Rhys' best wine and talking about everything and nothing.
A soft knock at the door pulled you from the memories, your eyes drifted to the clock softly ticking on the wall and you frowned, it was quite late. Lifting yourself from the tub, you wrapped a towel around your frame and padded over to the door, your wet footprints embedding themselves in the wood below. Slight disappointment sliced through you when you opened the door to see Mor, Nesta and Feyre on the deck shivering in the brisk breeze.
"We brought supplies," Nesta pushed past you, placing a wicker basket on the table and shrugging off her coat, "By supplies I mean wine, wine, and more wine."
Mor and Feyre entered, sniffing the air with soft smiles, they had always loved your scent, it was peaceful, like ocean waves lapping against the side of a mountain at dusk, airy, blissful, fresh.
The news had spread around the Inner Circle rather quickly thanks to Rhys, he had told Cassian, and well, Cassian wasn't exactly known for holding his tongue. The Lord of Bloodshed had apologised to you, feeling guilty for making things worse between you and Azriel, but you didn't mind. All you wanted was for the Shadowsinger to simply look at you. Anything else was a pointless worry. Not worth your time.
Tugging the towel tighter around your frame, you forced a smile, "This is really nice. Thank you."
Strangely, both Nesta and Feyre had been surprisingly supportive of the bond between you and Azriel. To them it made sense, you had been friends for over 500 years, you both struggled with fitting in, and you only felt truly comfortable to let your walls down around one another. To them, the bond had been there for a long time, waiting for the perfect moment. Too bad that the perfect moment had ended up making feel like the most worthless creature on the planet.
"Has he let you in yet?" Nesta rested her hand on your shoulder, her other hand was busy handing you a goblet of wine which you hugged closely to your chest and shook your head, "I'm sorry y/n. I really thought he would have by now."
"Give it time. He'll come around," Feyre draped her cloak over the arm of one of the dining chairs, smoothing out her skirt. It had always astounded you just how perfect they all were, the Archeron sisters that is, it was hard to understand how any male couldn't be attracted to them. They were quite heavenly.
"You've all been saying that for weeks," you shrugged off Nesta's hand, exasperated, "If anything he's become colder. Azriel doesn't acknowledge me, he looks right through me, he finds any reason possible to not be in the same room as me and when he sees me in the halls he turns on his heels and runs."
"I'm now living in this damned cabin hoping that some space will help him," your shoulders dropped, "I've waited my entire existence for this, I started to think that I wasn't worthy of it, and when it happened and the bond snaps with the one person I know that I could be truly happy with," your bottom lip wobbled slightly, but you choked it down and swallowed hard, "He ran."
Mor leaned forward in her seat, wide eyes under her perfectly sculpted furrowed brows, "It has nothing to do with you, y/n."
"How am I supposed to believe that when he won't even look at me?"
Something thick and fluffy draped over you, Nesta's robe that you always eyed was resting on your shoulders, "Go and get in your comfy clothes, then we can talk and bitch until all you feel is anger."
Amongst the chatter, you spied the three leather bags full to the brim of differing clothes and cosmetics, and then you realised that you weren't alone, not really, not when those three bags of clothes and trinkets belonged to the three females in the cabin with you, clearly ready to move in and stay with you until you were ready to face life again.
Who needed a man when you had three raging bitch queens?

Nesta was right, you just had to get back to work.
If anything was going to be able to distract you from that aching in your chest, then it would be work.
Luckily, Rhys, whilst he loved your abilities greatly, saw you as much more than just a celestial witch residing in his court, he likened you to a sister, blood family, which meant that he trusted no one more than you to act on his behalf when it came to court politics.
Holding such a position meant that you were rather close with the High Lords, they never saw you as Rhys' lackey at all, they saw you as a being that cared greatly about the continent who would stop at nothing to ensure harmony in all jurisdictions. Such a role meant that you were also required to entertain the High Lords whenever they visited Velaris, a place you had extended to them after the war to aid their research and better their own courts, with your help of course.
That particular evening, Rhys had asked you to entertain a certain High Lord of Autumn, Eris Vanserra; he was visiting Lucien and his new mate, Elain, and the entire visit was putting Azriel on edge. So, naturally, you couldn't say no.
"I always love our dinners, y/n," Eris' whisky amber gaze burned into you, searching the supernatural speckles in your own.
It was no secret that Eris had a flame for you, a being he found intriguing beyond belief, in the grasp of the Night Court when Eris knew how much you would thrive in Autumn by his side. The High Lord had offered Rhys pretty much everything he could to try and convince him to let him near you. All attempts had been swiftly denied.
Plates were littered with blotches of sauce and chicken bones, two empty bottles of red had been disposed of long ago, and you were just about to order that sticky toffee slice that made your toes curl when Eris asked, "When were you going to tell me about you and Azriel, hm?"
Candlelight drifted over the side of his face, illuminating his eyes against the darkening backdrop. "What are you talking about?"
Eris smirked, swirling the second glass of your third bottle that evening in perfect circles in his palm, "Come on, y/n. You reek of him, that cedar scent that even I have to admit is rather interesting."
In all of your self wallowing and sudden busyness you hadn't realised that the scent of the mating bond lingered on you, entwining with your scent of blissful oceans to create something new, something drowning. Something suffocating.
"I can admit that the news did hurt me, just a little bit," Eris, since the war, had allowed his hair to grow out. It sat just below his shoulders, layered and playful, he had it lazily pulled back low on his head. Something about that hair and those eyes made you question everything you knew, and you did know that you weren't the only one who felt like that when around the High Lord of Autumn.
Fluttering your lashes at Eris, you ran your fingers across the line of your bodice, "I apologise. It seems that fate wanted to lead me elsewhere."
Eris dismissed the waiter, eyes grinning at you through his lashes, "Let's go to Rita's. I need to drink some more, and you," he pointed to you, knowing that he was interrupting a rather important date with a rather important pudding, and said, "Need to loosen up, Witchling."
That fucking name.
You were sure that steam was emitting from your ears, but you couldn't deny that he was right, you couldn't really remember the last time you let loose and danced the night into oblivion. So you grabbed your purse from the table, a ornate gold cage that matched the intricate details of your skirt, and rose from your seat, "I hate how right you are, Vanserra. Let's go."
The High Lord towered over you, like all of them did really, stupid high fae and Illyrians and their stupid perfect genes making them so handsome and mysterious and utterly fuckable.
Stumbling from the restaurant at the edge of the Sidra, you looped your arm through Eris' and he practically had to pull you along the streets of the city or else you'd go and do a ritual in a field or something. Despite his crush, Eris found that part you a bit odd. In a way, you did too.
"When are you going to come to Autumn, Witchling? You know you'd love it there."
Eris propositioned you with the notion every time he saw you, he clearly thought that if he pestered you about it enough then you'd agree to it one day. Even just a fleeting visit would be enough to satisfy him. Just a day or two. You couldn't deny that Autumn piqued your interest, and with everything going on, perhaps a little break would do you some good.
"Maybe sooner than you think," despite the shameless flirting, you were glad that you could call Eris your friend, underneath that mask of loathing, you found the High Lord to be complex, and he appreciated your understanding. You were the only being that had ever approached him with kindness and treated him for who he truly was and not what he displayed. "All of this stuff with Azriel is spinning my mind. I feel like I'm going insane."
Eris hummed, tugging you a bit tighter into his side as he draped his arm over your shoulder, something completely platonic that you knew would send a certain someone spiralling, "That's what mating bonds do, y/n. I know that everyone keeps on telling you that he'll come around, I hope he does. Truly." It was the first time you had seen him say something and know that he was sincere of it "But, for tonight and tonight only, you are mine and we are going to drink and dance until we physically can't anymore, alright?"
Inhaling deeply, you met his gaze, "Alright."
Rita's was packed to the brim, you could feel the music thumping through the air so intensely that the ground beneath your feet was vibrating in time with the bass. Suddenly, you felt overdressed, but Eris commanded that you not think of it as he pulled you through the doors and past the guards who nodded at you with a curt smile as you clicked by.
In Velaris, you were quite known for being the wild one, the entire city was in awe of you and the powers you displayed so beautifully. More often than not, you would be found in the poorer parts of the city enchanting the children with your magic, curls of water would dance along their cheeks, and they would gasp when you would pluck a star from the sky and rest it in the palm of your hand. You knew what it felt like to feel alone and forgotten, being the last existing witch in your coven and all, and you didn't want anyone else to feel like that. So, if some water and a star would bring some form of happiness to those children, then you'd spend the rest of your life bringing them that wonder.
Eris tugged you through the grinding bodies, some of which parted as soon as they saw your eyes glistening in the lights, and stopped at the bar, shouting over the music to order drinks for you both before he turned, handing you a glass of what you could only assume was straight liquor, "To stealing you from the Night Court, Witchling," Eris raised his glass, rolling your eyes, you met it with a clink and wasted no time in downing the liquid, relishing in the burn that travelled down your throat and chest.
"Keep dreaming, Vanserra."
Hand on heart, Eris swayed into you, "Oh believe me, y/n, I do."
If you had known who was staring at you from across the room then you would have taken a step away from Eris, much like if you had seen the shadows followed you since you left the cabin that evening you wouldn't have agreed to go to Rita's. It was too late to do anything when your eyes connected with his, yours widened in surprise and solemn shock as his own narrowed, flickering between you and Eris before softening.
Of course, the first time Azriel actually looked at you was when you were stood beside Eris Vanserra, a High Lord, the brother of the one now laying with Elain.
Fuck.
It was like he didn't even see you really, he only saw Eris standing far too close to the one the cauldron had decided to be his mate. There was no way to be blind to the hatred between them, and with Azriel's temper and Eris' flare for the dramatics, you weren't surprised that Rhys had asked you to entertain the latter for the evening.
Noticing how your body froze, Eris frowned, he followed your line of sight to the Shadowsinger perched at a booth across the room ignoring both Cassian and Rhys who were trying to speak to him, to keep him calm.
Rhys. I didn't know.
I know, y/n. It'll be fine. We can handle Az if you can handle Eris.
Stiffly nodding, you turned to speak to Eris, to convince him to leave and find another place to drink, but he was gone. Then you saw his red hair moving through the crowd and you cursed, colourfully, and you scrambled through the crowd to try and reach him before he did something stupid.
Rushing up the steps to the usual booth reserved for the Inner Circle only, you stopped in your tracks as Eris' voice sliced through the chilled air, "When are you going to give our sweet y/n a break, Rhys? I keep on asking her to come to Autumn but she keeps on refusing."
Stop talking.
"It seems that she could use a break now more than ever."
Stop fucking talking.
"Especially since the bond is unrequited and she's sat in that little cabin day in day out wondering what her fate will be."
Wrapping your fingers around his wrist, you tugged on him, harshly, like you were reprimanding a dog on a leash, "Stop talking."
Little did you know, that one touch alone was enough to make Azriel visibly flinch and shudder with pain. That one act pierced his heart deadlier than Elain ever had or could, the way your fingers rested just over Eris' pulse, the way you looked at him with flame in your eyes, it was too much.
Eris wouldn't hurt you, you were the closest thing he had to a true friend, bit his loosened lips would be the end of you, "You both know that this isn't fair on her. Why is she the one who has to sit in misery and move to the outskirts of this city in order to make your poor Azriel more comfortable?"
Tension bubbled, Rhys was slowly rising from his seat whilst Cassian angled himself in front of Azriel, probably to stop the Shadowsinger from doing something he would come to regret, "Eris, you're making it worse," he finally gave you his attention, "Just wait outside for me, we can find somewhere else to drink, okay?"
It took him a moment, but your pleading eyes convinced him to listen, and Eris moved from your side, disappearing from you and leaving you stood before three Illyrians, all of which you were sure didn't wish to be around you in that moment. Fiddling with your fingers, you looked up from the ground at them, "I'm sorry. I didn't know that you were going to be here. You told me to keep him entertained, I'm sorry."
Rhys froze, his breath caught in his throat, and Azriel was glaring at him with such intensity that it made even you shrink, and you didn't shrink away from anything or anyone, "I'll go. I'm sorry," your chest ached when Azriel didn't even glance in your direction, instead keeping his gaze trained on his High Lord who simply nodded once at you.
Then you left, you grasped Eris by the lobe of his ear and dragged him away from Rita's before Azriel could make him pay for his words, or even worse, Rhys. It took only a few blocks for Eris to swat your hand away, "I'm not a child, y/n." Eris rubbed the red tinged patch of skin at his ear with a pout.
Velaris watched on as you bundled down a cobbled path toward the bank of the Sidra, a place you went to often to channel your magic, it was serene and beautiful, and had been the perfect place for you to find your calm in the midst of such brutality, "That is my mate, Eris. Do you understand that? Azriel is going through so much already, he lost Elain to Lucien," Eris cocked his brow in warning but you continued, "Elain was meant to be the one for him, and as long as Az was happy then I could choke down everything I had ever felt for him because he deserved all of the happiness possible after everything he's been through. I could live alone for the rest of my days as long as he was happy. Then it turns out that he's mine, that he was always meant to be mine, it should have been the best day of our lives," tears pooled on your bottom lids and you were sick of it, of crying, you had never cried, it wasn't in your nature but it was all you could do these days.
"Azriel can't even look at me, I had to move out of the River House and isolate myself from everyone I love just to give him a moment to think and process everything," you turned to Eris, "You just had to prod him, didn't you? You just had to get under his skin. Do you know how this looks? Elain chose Lucien and then he sees me drinking with you?"
Eris ran a hand over his face and sighed, "I didn't mean to make things difficult, y/n. I just want what's best for you, what you deserve."
"I know and I appreciate that, I really do. I just wanted things to get better, not worse."
It astounded Eris how Azriel wasn't over to moon to have you as his mate, you were elegant and graceful, a formidable opponent, tactical and sharp, and one of the most beautiful creatures to ever walk under the skies of Prythian. Perhaps he could have been a touch more sensitive to the situation at hand.
The moonlight waltzed over the rippling waters of the Sidra which acted as a mirror to the sky above, clear and bright, full of possibility.
The bond strained in your soul, empty and unrequited, a lone dying ember searching for its flame, and you knew then that Azriel was going to pull away from you more than ever.
"You should go back to the House of Wind," your voice was small and weak, "I'll see you before you leave tomorrow."
Eris took a step toward you, fumbling, knowing that he had messed up, "Please, y/n."
"Eris," he paused his movements, "Just go. I'll see you tomorrow."
Knowing that nothing was going to change your stubborn mind, Eris retreated up the embankment and down the cobbled path, leaving you completely and utterly alone.
Pebbles brushed together under your weight, moving flat to accommodate your position. You hugged your knees to your chest, unclasping your heels and tossing them aside, rubbing the skin on your ankles softly to alleviate the pinching that was once there.
How long could you go like this? How long would be able to deal with the rejection before it broke you? How long until you took Eris up on his offer and left Velaris forever?
You didn't have much time to think of an answer, not when a familiar cool pressure coiled at the small of your back, travelling up your spine and over your shoulders. The shadows drifted through your hair and you smiled sadly at them, at the sweet sign to tell you that you weren't alone.
"How did you find me?"
A shuffle sounded from behind you, shoes scraping along the pebbles, "This is our place. Where else would you go?"
You turned then, peering over your shoulder at him, examining him for a moment. Azriel certainly looked better, his eyes had lightened by a couple of hues and his skin was healthy an tanned to perfection, though, sadness and doubt still lingered in his eyes.
Silently cursing yourself, you turned back to the water. It was yours and Azriel's place, it always had been, until Elain came along that is and then it became your place. Whenever either of you had a bad day, the other would bring them there, to listen to the water rushing up on the rocks and watch the stars, and you'd talk, about anything that was bothering you and causing you any pain, and then suddenly you'd be alright again.
You rose from the ground, brushing little fragments of twigs and dirt from the golden swirls of your skirt, and Azriel gazed at you as you did, wondering how his best friend had become a stranger so quickly, "If I had known you were there tonight I wouldn't have taken him."
"I know," Azriel had his hands bundled into his pockets, afraid that if they lingered at his side then he would reach for you and risk a whole other world of pain, "I think we need to break the bond."
The world stopped moving.
"What?"
Azriel repeated, "I think we need to break the bond."
Break the bond.
It writhed in your chest, it writhed in pain and sorrow, striking you so deeply that you thought you may stop breathing, "I can't do it again. I can't be broken like this again, not with another Vanserra, not with anyone."
Thumping in your chest, your heart cried out, lurching around in its cage, and you struggled to form any words, "Az-"
"It's what's best for us, y/n."
No. No, no, no.
"How can you say that?" Azriel frowned, his hazel orbs softening, like he too was in pain, "I have done everything I can to give you space to process this, I moved out of our home, twice, to give you space to process whatever you need to process and feel whatever it is that you need to feel. I have gone 500 years being perfectly content of being your friend and that alone, because that was better than not having you at all. I stood by and watched you pine for Mor, and then her, the one who put such a wedge between us that I was reduced to polite hellos and nods. But I dealt with it, for you and your happiness. I dealt with all of the comparisons and pain, I dealt with the punishment of your feelings for her. I would deal with every ounce of hatred you throw at me if it meant that you would feel better, hoping that one day you'd realise that I have always been here for you, that I have always loved you in ways that no one else ever could."
You were pacing up and down the riverbank, pebbles knocking together as you walked, and Azriel stood before you unmoving, unknowing of what to say and only knowing that he needed it to end, "You never even gave it a chance," your choked whisper put him on edge.
Azriel had never seen you cry, had never heard of it happening, clearly Rhys had negated to tell him just how deeply the last few weeks had impacted you. To the point where you had actually cried. Tears gathered at your bottom lids and he noticed how you looked up at the sky to prevent them from falling.
"You never let me in."
Everything within Azriel was screaming at him to reach for you, the bond that he had frozen in place behind a wall of shadow was battering against the shield like a ram to break free and comfort you.
You were right, you had been his best friend, one of the few he could ever really depend on for everything. Elain had never liked you, she had always blamed it on her abilities not being able to harmonise with your own, but Azriel had always known it was deeper than that. Elain was a seer, and somehow it hadn't dawned on Azriel just how much she could have been hiding.
Elain hated it when he spent time with you, and being as in love as he was, he believed that it was down to some strange jealously that lingered on the surface. No one would have blamed Elain for her jealousy, you were truly a sweet creature, the other half to his marred coin that he had so carelessly tossed away. What if Elain had seen something and had chosen to lead Azriel away from you in order to preserve what she wanted them to share?
"I've given you everything I can," you sounded utterly defeated, "I don't know what else to do, Azriel."
His name was like a sonnet on your lips, one of heart-breaking sadness and longing, and he stepped to it, his shadows swirled around his body and drifted out to you. They had always adored you. They had always sought after you, a stark difference to their hiding from Elain.
"I would ruin you, y/n. You deserve so much more, so much better than me," his fingers twitched for you, he was so close yet so far from holding you, from inhaling the coconut scent of your shampoo and the scent of your soul, of soft salted breezes and jasmine, "I never meant to hurt you. I never wanted you to feel like you weren't worthy of love, and I'm so sorry for making you think that you were alone in the world," you had cocked your head to the side in question, "Rhys told me."
Azriel took another step forward, exhaling with relief when you didn't make a move to get away from him, "Love scares me. Elain had my heart in the palm of my hand and then crushed it, and then the bond snapped with you, with the one person I know would never hurt me, and I just couldn't risk it. I can't risk it. I can't risk being broken again, I can't risk hurting you."
All this time, when Azriel had been wallowing in the loss of Elain, of having to deal with her and Lucien's bond, he had completely neglected you, and your feelings. It was something you had never done to him, something you never could.
A gentle breeze flowed through the air, it carried your scent to him, and on inhaling it, he felt his entire body relax, he felt his aching disappear, and it was as though the world had gotten clearer. You turned away from him, hands folded over your chest and facing the river so that he couldn't see your tears, "I thought I was destined to be alone. The rules of your kind and the fae have never really applied to me, even the Cauldron doesn't understand me. I thought that it took the chance of love from me, but now I see that it was just some cruel joke."
Let her in. Feel her.
The shadows cooed to him, faintly, like a lullaby to a new-born babe.
"If it'll bring you peace," your voice broke, "Then break it. Break the bond. I'll find some other place to be."
Don't let her get away. Mate. She loves you. Love her. Let her in.
As though the world was tilting, Azriel let down that wall, he felt that bond slither over the seam of it to reach you, and then what he felt brought him to his knees.
Love. Wanting. Hope. Pain. Sorrow. Longing.
It consumed him with light, fighting off the demons that had been left to plague him, decimating them with the most pure substance in Prythian. Love.
When you heard his knees hit the ground you had turned and ran to where he knelt on the pebbles, meeting him as you slid onto your own, ignoring the stabbing into your skin, "Az? Are you alright? What's wrong?" You cupped his face in your hands and he felt each one of your fingertips flow life back into him.
The two tethers to the bond were dancing with one another, meeting in the middle and thrumming as two became one, turning dark skies into ones of bright sun and opulent warmth.
It was you. Sweet and fierce you. You who had always protected him, you who had always put him first even when he couldn't return it. You.
"Az? Talk to me, tell me what's happening. Do I need to call for Rhys? I'll get him right-"
Azriel stopped you before you could rise to your feet, the act of wrapping his fingers around your wrists enough to make your words vanish in your mouth, "You love me."
Settling into the space before him, knee to knee with him and his shadows itching to pull you closer, you didn't remove your hands from his, the feeling of it so powerful that it wiped all of your pain away, "I always have."
Walks along the Sidra. Visits to the bakery. The countless thoughtful gifts for Winter Solstice. The nights spent locked away in the cabin talking about dreams and fears.
Azriel's fingers drifted along your cheek before resting there, his thumb softly soothing the tightness in your jaw, "Why did you never say anything?"
"Because you deserve to be happy, even if it isn't with me," Azriel watched your bottom lip wobble, and that stream of love within him rippled with upset. His thumb moved to it, dragging across that plump flesh that he had always wondered of the taste.
Would you taste sweet or of lightly salted oceans? Of the air at dusk perhaps?
All he had ever chased was happiness, how foolish of him to be blind to the fact he had always had it within you.
"I think the only time I've ever truly been happy, at peace, has been with you. You've always felt like home," your eyes met and he offered you a small, genteel smile; his fingers moved to your hair, raking over your scalp and floating to rest on the small of your back, "I've missed you so much."
"You have?"
Azriel hummed in admittance, "The worst part of all of this was that I left the House of Wind to be near you, because I could be, nothing was in the way of us anymore, and I knew you'd be the only one patient enough to deal with me. It was selfish, but you've always been the rocks on which the ocean crashes, you've always been the one I can turn to without fear of judgement. You understand me."
"I can still be that person, Az. I can still be your friend."
Resting his forehead against yours, Azriel spoke lowly, like he had just awoken from slumber, "Do you know how hard it is for me to not take you back to that cabin right now and make you mine?" The carnal desire was dwelling within him, a rabid need that begged to be satisfied, "But you deserve better, y/n. Better than what I've done. So if you'll let me, I want to do this properly. I want to court you and make you feel like you're the only woman in the world, and when you're ready, not me, you, then you can accept it for the both of us. Because you deserve the magic of the bond more than me, you deserve this happiness."
"And if you don't want to, then that's fine. I can live with what I've done, and if you want to move to Autumn and find happiness there then I won't stand in your way. In no world would I ever stop you from finding love and passion and joy, because you deserve it y/n, you are everything that is beautiful in this world and then some. Every single part of you is destined for greatness, for a love so powerful that people drown in it."
"I hate what I've done to you, I hate that I've made you feel unworthy of a mating bond and I'll never forgive myself for it. But if you let me, I'd like to show you that I want this, that I want you, and you can decide for yourself if a life with me is something you want."
Silence fell between you but you didn't make a move to pull away, you knelt in place, peering up at him with your hands resting on his biceps, channelling the pulsing energy of the Sidra as it ebbed and flowed downstream, "A life with you is all I've ever wanted."
The bond glowed, golden and blinding, and Azriel was struggling to keep himself together as he basked in the ocean of your love and devotion, "Can I kiss you? Please?"
If he wasn't searching for it then he wouldn't have even noticed the tiniest hazed nod directed at him. Even the stars had stopped their flickering to focus on you, their most prized possession, the only one capable of harnessing their power and turning it into something blissful and good. It was why they chose you.
Closing the gap, Azriel tilted your head upward to give him better access to the lips that had often haunted his dreams; the scent of jasmine entwined with his own and he felt himself hold his breath as he closed that gap between you.
Your lips were as soft and warm as he had imagined them to be, they tasted of fresh saltwater and some kind of sweet fruit from the gloss you always wore that made them shimmer in any light. It stopped the world from turning for a moment, the universe watched on as Azriel sealed your fates. Moving his fingers from the small of your back to your neck and deepening the embrace of your lips, Azriel relished in the taste of you, in your warmth, in the way his soul sang and his shadows pulled you in closer to him. It was a feeling he had waited his entire existence for, one you had also yearned for.
Utterly magical. Soul consuming.
Everything made sense then. How everything you had both endured was meant to be, just so that you could end up entwined in that moment. All of the pain and sorrow, all of the false love and distance, all of the laughter and sweet memories, it was all worth it. It was worth every morsel of agony.
"Such a sweet creature. My sweet creature."
"Yours?" Azriel hummed, pressing dainty kisses to the tip of your nose and cheeks, and you closed your eyes to consume his touch and shuddered when his lips landed on your collarbone, caressing the skin there, "I think I could get used to that."

I'm Right Here

The sun shone brightly down as you walked down the cobblestone street, shopping bags filled with summer solstice presents. Gentle rays shone across your face and brightened up your eyes. A smile graced your face as you looked up at the sky, a flap of wings momentarily casting shadows across your body. The owner landed beside you and immediately took your bags into his own arms. His shadows immediately tangled in your hair and wove up and down your body.
"Well hello to you too" you giggled, twirling your fingers as the shadows danced between them.
The corner of Azriel's lips turned upwards as he remarked, "I think they like you better than me at this point."
You teased, "Well of course they would, what's not there to love?" It was a rhetorical question, so you started walking, expecting he would follow behind. What you didn't hear is how Azriel mumbled, "My point exactly," before falling into step beside you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That evening was the solstice bonfire, a party that was attended by more than half of Velaris. The red and orange flames drifted higher and higher, embers that looked like flying stars circling all around.
You stood on the side, quietly observing the festivities. Dancing wasn't really your thing, seeing as you had two left feet in the opposite shoes. A drink in your hand, your gaze drifted across the couples dancing and nodding their heads to the upbeat song currently playing, until it caught on a male standing in the shadows.
You could feel your lips turn up as soon as you found him, and you started making your way over. He was glaring at the party-goers, oblivious to you, as his shadows loped over his shoulders and up and down his body.
You snuck around the tables that had been set up, filled to the edge with every type of food you could imagine. As you reached him, you stretched your hands out in an attempt to cover his eyes. Before you could touch him, you felt the cool kiss of two shadows grabbing onto your wrists, dragging your arms down and pulling you around until you faced their master, a sheepish look stretching across your face.
"Whoops," you laughed nervously. "Wrong person, sorry."
You tried to back away slowly, but scarred hands gripped your hips, bringing you back.
Azriel's hazel eyes stared down at you, the reflection of the bonfire glinting in them as he quirked his lips. "Wrong person? Who, pray tell, were you meaning to sneak up on? I know you surely made made a mistake because you should know that would never work on me." He bent down until his lips brushed against the outer shell of your ear. "I've trained you much better than that."
You hoped the fire would be a sufficient reason for the flush spreading across your cheeks.
Az leaned back, a smirk adorning his lips. You internally frowned, thinking it wasn't fair for him to look like a freaking Adonis. His hair fell perfectly across his brows, and you wanted nothing more than to tangle your fingers and run your hands through it. How could you ever compare to him?
A pang of self doubt laced through your heart, and your minuscule frown became apparent on your face. You quickly schooled your features, but your emotions were not lost on Azriel.
He tugged you gently. "Hey hey, what's wrong?" His eyes searched yours, automatically trying to fix the problem he didn't even know was there. His shadows wrapped themselves comfortingly around you, tangling in your hair.
You smiled slightly, "Nothing Az. I'm all good."
He looked unsure, but then nodded, eyes still noting your every move. You smiled again, one a little more genuine, and then tugged your hand from his. You immediately felt the loss of warmth and missed his touch.
"I'm going to get a drink, ok? I'll be right back," you told him.
Azriel smiled gently. "Don't be too long, I need a dancing buddy."
You smiled in amusement. "Riiiiight, we'll see about that. You might need a medic buddy instead, after that disaster."
You turned around, heading towards the drinks table, completely missing Azriel smiling wistfully at your back.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you poured some fruity drink into one of the fresh cups on the table, you saw a shadow approach you in the corner of you eye and you turn, grinning. Your smile immediately falls when you see the fae male standing in front of you, the complete opposite of who you wanted it to be. Blonde hair, blue eyes, arms and shoulders devoid of any floating wisps.
He smiled nervously, and your heart sank. "Oh no," you thought. "This was going to end badly."
"Uh, hey?" The male cleared his throat. "Ahem, I meant, hey." His voice was suddenly two octaves lower and you couldn't help but giggle at him. His face lit up, as if delighted to have gotten a reaction from you. He continued, "Yea so, I saw you from all the way over there," he points to the other side of the clearing, "and I thought you were really cute, so my stupid friends dared me to come over here and talk to you, and it's totally fine though if you don't, but I just ask that you pretend to be sad and then walk away or something so I don't get teased for the next month." He cut himself off and then grimaced. "Sorry I start ranting when I get nervous."
You assured him, "No, seriously, don't even worry about it. The exact same thing happens to me literally all the time."
He looked relieved, and stuck his hand out. "My name's Aric."
You smiled and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you," you said, smiling slightly.
Your mind automatically thought of Azriel, waiting patiently for you back at the edge of the dancing. You glanced back, seeing if you could spot him from all the way over there, and your heart dropped. There he was, talking to a pretty Illyrian female who was smiling up at him like he had hung the stars in the sky. You swallowed with a lump in your throat, and turned back to Aric.
You didn't even realize he had been talking the whole time. You interrupted, saying, "I'm so sorry, what was that?"
Aric laughed nervously, "Oh, I was just asking if you wanted to dance?" The end of his sentence curved up at the end, like he was asking a question.
"Oh, umm..." you hesitated, but then thought of Azriel clearly enjoying his time with that female, and replied, "you know what, I would love to."
Aric's face relaxed, and a deep breath escaped him as his face showed a look of pure relief. "O-ok, great!"
The male took your hands and led you to the center of the dance floor, before wrapping his arms around your waist. But before he could even touch you, a muscled arm grabbed his arm and twisted sharply. Aric cried out in pain, and Azriel bent down to his level.
"If you ever go near her again, I will rip this arm off, rip out your nails, stab them in your eye, cut off your feet, and shove them down your throat." He says it quietly, but it was unmistakable the overwhelming amount of anger and rage he was barely able to control. He was practically vibrating.
You snap out of your shock, and grab his arm, trying to get him to let go of the male. His grip finally loosened, and Aric ran off with his tail between his legs. Azriel turned slowly, as if fearing the scene behind him, as he rightfully should. He stepped forward, closing the distance between you. It was silent, and then you crossed your arms and said, "I'm going to give you 10 seconds to explain".
"I know you're angry," he started, his hands coming up to pull you even closer. "But he was touching you where he shouldn't have been. What was I suppose to do?"
You scoff. "I don't know, maybe LEAVE US ALONE!"
Azriel's hands come up in a placating position, "Sweetheart-"
"Nuh uh, don't you 'sweetheart' me," you respond. "You had no reason to interrupt. You clearly shouldn't have, seeing as your female friend ran off as well." You motioned to where the two had been standing.
Confusion flitted across his face. "Who?"
You sighed, exasperated. "The pretty Illyrian you were talking to like five minutes ago!"
The confusion stayed on Azriel's face, before it disappeared and an adoring expression took its place. He teased, "You mean Alycia? The Illyrian I rescued from a wing clipping two years ago who I was just congratulating on her engagement?"
An embarrassed look passed across your face, and Azriel chuckled.
He took a step impossibly closer, his voice soft but firm. "Angel, there is no one else for me but you. You're mine, and no one can touch what's mine."
You rolled your eyes in disbelief. "Azriel, what are you talking about?"
"Exactly what I'm saying, sweetheart. I've been trying so hard to get your attention, but nothing I do works."
You blinked, confusion flooding your expression. A kernel of hope planted itself in your chest. "What are you saying?"
Azriel hesitated, but then decided it was now or never. "I can’t pretend like I don’t care about you, because I do. More than I ever thought possible. I'm saying I love you, angel."
You expression was unreadable. Your lips parted, as if to speak, but nothing came out at first. Your eyes searched his, looking for any sign of hesitation, but there was none. You smirked, "Well that's good Shadowsinger, because I love you too."
You closed the gap, pressing your lips against his, slow at first, and then it was like fireworks exploded. His hands wrapped securely around your waist, and your hands finally tangled in his hair like you had always dreamed about. It was like everything else, the music, the people around you, had faded away and the only thing left was the beautiful male standing in front of you.
You regretfully pulled away, and leaned your forehead against his. "I never in a million years thought this could happen."
Azriel pulled away, "Now I'm confused; what do you mean?"
"Well, you know, you look like you, and I look like...well, me." You explain it as if it's the clearest thing in the world.
Your male responded, "Sweetheart, I don't think you understand just how amazing you are. You are so kind, and smart, and funny, and so amazingly gorgeous I thank the gods every day just to have met you. I am the lucky one here, and I am going to spend every waking minute reminding you of that."
You smiled softly up at him, your eyes misting over.
Azriel straightened up, smiled a full, genuine smile, and said, "Now, I think it's time you owed me that dance."

Break me out of this shell-like case I’m in
Underneath the skin there’s a human
Buried deep within there’s a human
And despite everything I’m still human
The bed creaked underneath the weight of his body and the blanket shuffled on top of me, while my eyes got used to the darkness of our bedroom. The silent sound of footsteps made me turn on my right side, trying to figure out what was happening and why I was about to wake up.
Instinctively, my hand went to the side and touched the warm spot Spencer was supposed to occupy. His pillow was still there, but he wasn’t.
I wasn’t surprised.
My eyes fell on the clock on my nightstand and, just like the night before at 4 am, I was alone in our bed. The darkness surrounding me wasn’t as comforting as it was before, because it felt like it was swallowing me whole - but I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.
Spencer, on the other side of our apartment, was sitting on the couch with his weighted blanket wrapped around his shoulder and his eyes closed. He was rocking back and forth, breathing in through his nose and out through his mouth with his hands clutching to the blanket.
That’s how I found him in our living room.
I didn’t want to get too close, terrified that I could’ve spooked him, but I couldn’t stand there and do nothing.
The pained expression on his face broke my heart as a tear escaped from those kind eyes that watched me with love and tenderness. I couldn’t just stay there and not do anything, I needed to help him somehow.
“Spencer?”
I called out his name to try and take him out from that hazy state he was clearly in, but I didn’t succeed. His eyes were still closed tightly and his knuckles were white because of the tension on his fingers, still gripping the blanket.
I took another step closer. “Spencer, my love?”
He didn’t move, but I saw his body relaxing when my voice reached his ear. Like a knot coming undone, Spencer leaned back against the couch with his blanket falling down from his shoulders.
His eyes didn’t open, but there was no need to.
“My love, I’m here.” - I whispered, taking another step closer to cover his shoulders with the blanket again - “You’re home.”
When my right hand barely brushed Spencer’s skin over his elbow, his fingers gripped it tightly and moved it over his chest. I didn’t pull away, following the path of his fingers before caressing the tender skin right above Spencer’s heart.
I could feel the quick beating of his heart underneath my fingertips.
I wanted it to match mine, calmer and more relaxed.
“Can I sit here with you, my love?”
Spencer didn’t answer me, but he moved to the side in order to leave space on the couch for me. His left thigh was slightly pressed to mine as his fingers lost their grip on my hand, cradling on top of my thigh.
I didn’t know what he wanted to do, but it was fine.
If touching me was what he needed to feel better, then I was more than willing to help him in that way.
Once I got comfortable on the couch, kneeling by his side with my right hand on his chest and the left one behind his neck, I leaned forward. I rested my chin on his shoulder, as Spencer’s curls tickled the lower part of my face.
He released a long sigh, tilting his head.
“Is there something I can do, my love?”
Spencer shook his head, pulling me closer to his body. I could hear the faint sound of his sniffles as he hid his face in the crook of my neck, clinging to the warmth radiating off me and the smell of home that embraced him.
I wrapped my arms around his neck and climbed onto his lap.
“You’re home, my love. You’re not there anymore.” - I whispered, running my fingers through his curls - “Did you have a nightmare?”
“Yes.”
Spencer’s voice came out broken by sobs, his body shaking as he tried to get as close as possible to me. My chest was pressed to his and my fingers were playing with his curls, a gesture that usually helped him calm down whenever he had those moments.
Prison changed Spencer, and not for the better.
Though his confidence peeked somehow, his whole demeanour changed whenever we were alone in our apartment. Spencer used to love having his space, but after his release from prison that changed: he never left me alone for too long, he always found a way to touch me and hold me close, as if he was scared I might disappear.
I knew it was all in his head, he knew it as well - but that didn’t change the fact that he wouldn’t stop holding my hand or asking me to come closer to him.
Spencer was terrified of losing me.
Before prison, losing me was just a temporary fear that would go away with my reassuring words. After prison, that fear became more irrational, more rooted in his brain to the point he would call me too many times on the phone just to make sure that I was safe and at work.
I couldn’t blame Spencer.
He saw his friend getting slaughtered in front of him. He had to taint other prisoners’ drugs in order to stay alive. He had to spend three hellish months in a place where he didn’t belong, to a place that crushed his spirit and ruined all the progress he had made through the years.
The nightmares were probably the worst part, though.
Endless nights of Spencer waking up screaming at the top of his lungs, where he would cry and cry in my chest because he thought I was dead, because he dreamed about being covered in my own blood branding a knife behind his back, because he thought that he hurt me.
His hands would shake me to make sure that I was still breathing and then he would kiss me, apologising to me for waking me up because he was so scared, whispering that everything was okay and he was just scared.
Scared wasn’t even the right word for it, Spencer was.. panic-stricken.
Shivers down my spine whenever I felt him shuffling out of bed and running outside the bedroom. I followed him every single time, everywhere around the house, fearing that he might do something awful, something drastic.
It was exhausting.
The more I tried to help him, the more everything seemed pointless.
But I wasn’t going to give up.
Underneath that shell of a man, there was my Spencer.
My darling Spencer, the man I’ve loved more and more each day.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“That’s okay, we can sit here in silence and watch the sun come up.” - I offered, pointing to the purple curtain covering the glass - “How about that, my love?”
Spencer didn’t answer me, but he held me closer to his chest as he hid his face in the crook of my neck. His curls tickled my skin as his hands brought me down on his thighs, feeling the warmth radiating off every inch of my body.
It wasn’t sexual.
It was far from that.
Spencer was making sure that I was real, that I was alive and breathing, that I wasn’t a figment of his imagination and that he wasn’t having another dream. The gentle massage of his fingers all over my thighs stopped as soon as I turned to the side, looking at the closed window not too distant from us.
The sky was still black and grey clouds were dancing ahead of us, but the faint lights of the sleepy sun were slowly peeking. I hoped the view could reflect Spencer’s episode as well: dark in the beginning as the poisonous thoughts clouded his brain, with the light slowly filtering through as the fear dissipated and my love lullabies him back to me, back to reality.
“Are you going to work today?”
I leaned my head on top of his, nodding. “Yes, but in the afternoon. Do you want me to call in sick?”
Spencer released a frustrated sigh as he went quiet.
I knew what he was thinking: he wanted me to stay at home with him, but he knew he couldn’t ask me that. Replacing me at work wasn’t easy, I knew my co-workers wouldn’t have appreciated that.
However, I was willing to do anything in my power to help Spencer out.
If he needed me to be with him for the whole day to hold his hand, to cook him some food, to read him a book, I was ready to do it. I didn’t want Spencer to feel bad for keeping me away from my colleagues and my work, I didn’t want Spencer to think that I resented him for asking for help.
I would’ve never done that.
Asking for help is one of the hardest things the human kind has ever learned to do, and some people still struggle with it. Spencer always kept everything to himself before prison, but then he realised that there was no need to fight all alone.
There was no need to use all of his strength and keep on fighting when there was no one by his side because he pushed them away, because he built this hard, cold wall all around his heart.
But he had to come to it on his own time, at his own pace.
Unfortunately, what made him understand that asking for help wasn’t a weakness, was prison. In that shit-hole Spencer understood the power of love, the power of his own words and that his feelings were valid.
They were a part of him, they were what made him a person.
Spencer had a really hard time processing that, but never did I push him. Never did I force him to speak when he didn’t want to. Never did I tell him that everything he did hurt me, because he knew that.
Deep down in his bright, warm heart, Spencer knew that by keeping quiet and never speaking he was hurting me. But who was I to tell him that? Who was I to kick a man who was already down? Spencer was well aware that communication meant everything to me, but I couldn’t force him to speak if he couldn’t.
He had to find his own voice, he had to find the strength to ask for help.
And when he did, his whole world changed.
Spencer found everything more difficult as soon as he spoke the first time. He didn’t look into my eyes, he didn’t hold my hands, he didn’t get close to me because he thought that talking about his feelings would make me hate him.
It didn’t. On the contrary, it made me love him even more.
Dealing with your own feelings is hard and dealing with your partner’s feelings, who’s not a big fan of processing them, is even harder. Sometimes people told me that it would’ve been much easier to leave him, to let Spencer deal with his own shit all alone and move on.
What kind of human being thinks that? What kind of person gives up on another person who just learned how to recognize and explain his feelings? What kind of person would let another deal with such a burden on their back, all alone?
Not me.
“Alright, I’ll call Francis.” - I kissed Spencer’s forehead, looking down at him - “Do you want to go to the bookshop later? We can pick a book and…”
Spencer shook his head, interrupting my sentence. “No. I want to stay at home.”
His fingers gripped me tighter as I tried to sit by his side. “That’s okay. Do you want to take a bath? Or bake something?”
“A bath would be nice.” - his voice was small, shaky - “Can we do that?”
I smiled at him, bringing both my hands on his cheeks. “Of course! Whatever you want, my love.”
Spencer followed me to the bathroom in silence, basking in the excitement that was clearly rolling off each one of my movements. He knew how much I loved taking baths together, because it was one of the most sensual and romantic experiences one could have.
In prison Spencer never had time alone, especially not in a room like a bathroom.
But now, in the comfort of our own home, Spencer could finally relax in the warm water as I massaged his shoulders and peppered his neck with kisses. He could bask in the happiness he brought me and the love I tried to shower him with, in order to make him feel like he didn’t change.
Because his love for me didn’t.
Spencer leaned his head to the side, sighing softly as I ran the sponge up and down his neck. Drop of water ran down his skin while the soap covered the soap’s path and I wrapped my free arm around his chest.
“Does that feel nice, hm?”
Spencer nodded, intertwining his fingers with mine over his heart. “I’ve missed doing this with you.”
“You’re preaching to the choir, my love.” - I whispered, closing my eyes as I rested my head against his back while I moved the sponge down to his shoulder - “But…”
Spencer turned his head to the side, never letting my hand go. “But?”
Humming, I pulled away from him and started to bathe him again. “Maybe we should buy a bigger bathtub.”
A low chuckle escaped from his lips. “Hm, maybe we can buy a Jacuzzi.”
I laughed with him, shaking my head. “Spencer, that’s too expensive! But we can book a weekend at the Hot Springs they just opened to have that experience.”
“Yes, please. I want to go away with you for a few days.”
“I’ll make a few calls later, then.” - I pressed a kiss on the back of his neck - “Okay?”
Spencer didn’t answer me but he gently tugged my arm, forcing me to press against his body one more time. With my cheeks against his back, my whole body was pressed to his while I stayed silent.
The idea of going to the Hot Springs with Spencer filled me with joy, because it was our first get-away after he came home from prison. I didn’t know if he was going to fully enjoy it, but I was going to try my best to make him forget all the feelings he had within himself.
“Can you sit in front of me?”
Spencer’s voice interrupted my train of thoughts, echoing inside the bathroom.
He couldn’t see me, but I nodded as I stood up from the water. Spencer held my hands in order for me not to slip and fall onto the floor, making sure that I was steady enough to exit the bathtub.
I didn’t know why he wanted me to sit in front of him, but I wasn’t going to say anything about it. It was probably because he needed to have me closer to him - and by closer, he desperately needed to have me on his thighs just like in the living room.
I wasn’t going to complain.
Spencer helped me get back inside the bathtub, watching me.
Those honey-coloured eyes were staring back at him with all the love and tenderness they’ve been showing me throughout the years, looking at me as if I was Spencer’ most precious possession - and I was, as he kept reminding me each day.
I brought my hands on his cheeks, leaning forward to kiss his lips while Spencer lifted my hips and gently sat me on his thighs.
“You look pretty.”
I bumped my nose against his. “Are you trying to get into my panties? That’s shameful, Doctor Reid. I am a lady.”
My words made him laugh as my heart swelled in my chest at the sight: when Spencer laughs, he has this cute, dumb, adorable smile on his lips and the most beautiful dimples on those soft cheeks.
He was so fucking beautiful and he didn’t know.
“I don’t think I need to have you sitting on my thighs to get into your panties, lady.”
I hummed against his lips, running my fingers through the curls at the base of his neck. “True, you can have me anytime you want.”
Spencer closed his arms around my waist and hid his face in the crook of my neck, breathing in and out through his nose. I kept caressing his hair and playing with his curls, hoping that my words didn’t make him uncomfortable.
It wasn’t unusual of me to make sexual innuendos at the most inappropriate times, Spencer knew me that well, but… I felt bad for saying that. I knew that Spencer didn’t want to have sex - if he wanted to, he would’ve told me or probably grabbed me by the waist and dragged me to the bedroom.
“I don’t deserve you.”
Shaking my head, I brought my hands down to his face and tilted it upward. “I decide whether you deserve me or not, Spencer.”
His eyes never left mine. “But it’s true. You’re always so good to me, and I haven’t been myself lately. I keep shouting, crying..”
“So? Do you think those things are enough to make me walk away?” - I asked, pressing a kiss over his lips - “I’m not going to leave you just because you’ve experienced something that caused you so much pain. I promised to stay by your side, I’m here for the long run.”
He didn’t have to speak because the way he leaned forward and closed the distance between us told me everything I needed to know. He was apologising through the kiss for claiming he wasn’t enough for me, but I understood his point of view.
Spencer knew he was being difficult to be with, but he also knew how much I loved him and cared for him. I wasn’t going to give up my love for him just because he had to go through such a traumatic experience.
I was willing to do anything in my power to help him, even if it would’ve taken me years to get him back.
But Spencer never went away. He was still himself underneath that glass shell.
He was still the man I fell in love with, just a bit bruised.
“I love you, Spencer. You know that, right?”
“Yes, I know.” - he replied with no hesitation - “But I really don’t understand how you manage to stay with me.”
I raised my brows, pulling away from him. “Did you forget what I just said?”
“Sometimes love is not enough.”
My heart broke at the pain in his voice.
“Not in my case, my love.” - I reminded him, brushing my thumb over his bottom lip - “In my case, love is more than enough. I’m with you because I love you and I don’t think I can survive without you, honestly.”
Spencer kissed my thumb. “That’s not healthy.”
“Drinking almost six cups of coffee in one morning is not healthy either, but you do it anyway.”
“Actually, four or five cups of coffee a day…”
Interrupting him with another kiss on the lips, I huffed. “Spencer.”
He chuckled, running his fingers up my back. “Sorry. It’s just… hard for me to understand why you would want to be with me when I’m being like this.”
“I’m with you because I’m in love with you.” - I answered him - “I’m with you because the day I agreed to be yours, I promise you I’d do anything for you. And I’m not going to give up on you just because you think you’re difficult.”
Spencer looked down, sliding his hands over my thighs.
“You’re not being difficult, Spencer. You’re traumatised, there’s a big difference.”
“I’m scared that I will push you away because of what I’ve been through.”
I shook my head, wrapping my arms around his neck. “I’m doing the best that I can to be with you, Spencer. I know that I’m not a psychologist or a psychiatrist, so I can’t give you medical help, but I’m willing to support you and be with you every step of the way. That’s what a partner does.”
Spencer released a sigh as the water inside the bathtub moved under us.
“I love you.”
I kissed his lips. “I love you too, more than words can say.”
In silence, I washed his curls with my strawberry shampoo. Spencer didn’t complain, keeping his eyes closed the whole time as he basked in the kindness of my touch over his scalp, his shoulders, his chest, his face.
I took your time to rinse off the shampoo and the soap off his body, to make sure he was clean and felt like it as well.
I couldn’t catch a glimpse of his thoughts, but I knew that at that moment Spencer felt safe in my arms. The way his body moved underneath mine made me understand that he didn’t want to let me go, that he was grateful to have me by his side and that he was going to do anything to be okay.
To get through this moment of his life.
When I was done with his bath, I cleaned myself and got out of the bathtub with his hands in mine. I struggled to move inside the bathroom as Spencer kept me close to his body the whole time, not daring to step away for a second.
It felt like I had a koala attached to my back, but I never once complained.
Spencer’s skin against mine felt perfect.
Following me to the bedroom, Spencer left his phone on the nightstand while I pushed the blankets down. He was looking at me the whole time, admiring how my naked body looked under the faint lights of the bedroom.
There was nothing sexual in what he was doing, even though I was naked and not afraid to show every part of me. I became so used to his eyes and his hands on me that when Spencer took a step back, I felt lonely.
I suddenly missed the warmth of his fingers on my waist and the hardness of his chest pressed to my back.
“I want to stop thinking for a while.”
I looked over to him, laying down on the bed. “How can I help, my love?”
Spencer didn’t speak, sitting on the edge of the bed. He twisted the little curls right behind his neck, with his eyes looking elsewhere. He was trying to gather the right words on his tongue.
“There is something, but…”
“Anything for you.” I frowned when he didn’t look at me
Lifting myself up, I crawled closer to him and wrapped my arms around his neck from behind so that my chin was pressed over his shoulder. I left an open-mouthed kiss on the side of his neck.
“I’d do anything to make you feel better, my love.”
Spencer turned to his side, looking at me before gently grabbing my hand. Our fingers locked together as he looked to the window right in front of us: he was still silent, probably pondering the words and picking the better ones.
I knew what he was silently telling me with the way he behaved, but I needed the words to come out of his lips. I needed Spencer to be honest and fully in control of the situation, because I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Spencer brought our joined hands to his chest. “I don’t know how to ask this.”
I crawled closer to him until I was sitting, again, on his thighs. Our hands were still locked together, but Spencer moved them from his chest to mine and slowly, he pushed them down right above my belly button.
It was clear what he wanted, and I understood how difficult it was to ask for that kind of comfort in such a moment but I was willing to help him.
I had to do all the talking, I wanted him to feel safe. And I needed him to know that I would’ve done anything for him.
“Do you want to make love to me?”
Spencer looked up at me as if I finally put a voice to his thoughts. Nodding his head, his lips touched mine as our hands separated.
My fingers immediately travelled up to his neck as I kissed him even harder, hoping that the love I was pouring into the kiss could be felt. I needed Spencer to know how much I loved him, how much I cared about him.
Spencer deserved to know every emotion I felt for him.
By the way he laid back down on the bed, with his hands pressed to my back so that our chests couldn’t separate, Spencer hinted at me that he felt everything.
Every beat of my heart, every breath I took, every smile and laugh… They all belonged to him.
There wasn’t a single part of my body that didn’t belong to him.
It didn’t take long for our bodies to connect, with me still sitting on his thighs and Spencer’s staring at me with those sweet, honey coloured eyes. I tried my best to stay still as Spencer brought his hands behind his neck, smiling at the sight of my body tightening all around him.
I moved as slow as I could, kissing his lips and whispering how much I loved him while Spencer couldn’t do nothing but take all of me, feel my body welcome him and show him that nothing changed between us.
We were still the same old us, wrapped in our own love bubble that nobody was going to burst - prison didn’t, Spencer understood that as I praised his name, whining in pure ecstasy the more our kisses became erratic and his hands flew on my waist.
His fingers dug into my skin, leaving the same marks my mouth was peppering his neck with. I painted his skin the way he painted mine, owning his body the way his was owning mine.
I made sure to remind Spencer of how good I felt as he looked at me completely breathless, struggling to move his eyes off me. I didn’t want him to - he deserved to know that he was still able to make me crumble, to make me whine his name, to make me his all over again.
Moans spilled from my lips like a chorus of prayers while Spencer kissed my throat.
He dragged his nails up to my thighs, whispering my name in that soft tone I loved more than anything in the world. He looked breathtaking, just like every night I’ve spent on top of him, underneath him, by his side, all around him.
We were one, that night.
With our eyes locked, I felt the euphoria crashing through my body as soon as his warmth filled me until I couldn’t take it anymore. I struggled to kiss Spencer while I let my pleasure blind me to the point I didn’t know where I started and Spencer ended, but I didn’t mind.
His hands were all over me, touching every inch of my skin as his eyes closed. Tears fell down his cheeks and mixed with mine, clashing onto our chests while we collapsed against one another.
Still enthralled in our pleasure and our love bubble, we clung to each other as if we were pathetic grass in the middle of a tornado. A perfect metaphor of our life ever since his sentence, ever since he got locked him and I stayed out, waiting for him in our bed, in our shared home.
But we were free, that night.
We were with one another, because Spencer came back to me.
He was still mine, he has always been mine even when his brain told him that I didn’t want him anymore, that I wouldn’t be able to be happy with a man like him by my side.
When the air filled our lungs again, I rolled off his body.
His right hand immediately clung to mine, with his fingers intertwined with mine.
“I love you,” Spencer blurted out.
I turned to the side, looking at him. “I love you more, my love.”
Brushing the back of his free hand to his cheek, Spencer cuddled closer to me. His nose pressed to the side of my throat while his whole body shuddered, as more tears spilled from those beautiful eyes I kissed.
I hugged him and held him as tightly as I could, caressing with the tip of my fingers his cheeks, his lips, his nose, his forehead. He kissed the skin he bit before as I sighed, holding back the tears.
I hated to see him so broken, and I hated not being able to help him just by snapping my fingers. I knew it was going to be a long and difficult process, but I was going to stay by his side every step of the way.
“Thank you.”
“For what, my love?”
Spencer looked up at me and his nose twitched. “For making me feel like a human being who deserves to be loved.”
I was going to turn this into my life’s mission.
With a weak smile, I closed the distance between our lips.
Remember that liking, reblogging or commenting on the fic are the only ways for you to give me feedbacks - which is always appreciated. Being ignored is a shitty feeling.

Masterlist✨

"I like you." You said with big bright eyes.
"But no one can know about this. Just you and I. That's enough." He answered, hand tracing the side of your face.
You blink rapidly. You have always been daydreamer. It caused you tons of problems although you tried to do your best when you were out on missions. Ghost is walking ahead of you, boots sinking in the sand beneath your feet. The waves crashing on the shore is something you like listening to and seeing too but under different circumstances. Both of your gear clink with every step you take, it's the only sound as well as the sea that swallows the tense silence that falls between the two.
Things have been rather... strange since two days ago and you've tried to talk to him about it. It wasn't weird for Ghost to push you back every now and then, he was a complicated person and you couldn't be more different from one another.
You were the sun and he was the darkness that came at night or so he had said one night at the common room back at the compound. He was stoic, grumpy and hardly found himself enjoying somebody's company. You on the other hand, even though you wouldn't consider yourself the most outgoing person like Johnny, still you liked talking unlike him. You loved going out with the task force. And most importantly you loved when Ghost joined because you loved him, you loved having him around, despite his gruff responses or annoyed looks.
You jog though your legs shake and tiredness sets in your body.
"How much farther until we get there?" You ask, ignoring the fact that his frame goes rigid when you speak . He doesn't acknowledge you at first. All you hear is a small sigh leaving his lips. You kind of wish he wasn't wearing the damn sunglasses so you could see his eyes.
They always said a lot.
"Thirty minutes. Give or take." The answer is short and cold, breaking your heart a little more than before. Still, you decide to try again.
"Sir, is something bothering you?" Before he can stop it he scoffs, shaking his head. "What?" Brows furrowing on your features. "Simon..."
He stops all of the sudden, turning to face you with a tense stance.
"First of all don't bloody use my name out here. Secondly it's your own fault we've been walking for hours. So don't go asking if something's bothering me, Sergeant."
Taking a step back you open your mouth.
"My fault? I was doing my job!"
"Didn't know your job was to get your fucking head blown off!!" He seethes. "Fucking hell you can't be this reckless and expect me to clap at your poor acting on the field." Your heart begins to race, he had never said such things to you. Taking a small step back your grit your teeth, you hated that his words were making your eyes blurry. This was the Simon you never wanted to see. And yet there he was. "Now we lost the damn intel thanks to you." He spits. But something isn't adding up.
"It's not just that. You've been acting strange for a few days now, Ghost. Don't come and tell me it's just because I did what I was supposed to do!" He stiffs yet again. Jaw clenching so hard you fear he might break it. "Not missing the way you avoid me ever since..." you close your mouth shut. "The pub..." he shifts his weight from one foot to another. The waves are increasing and now reach your feet, dampening your boots. And then you remember him storming off the local pub before he even finished his own drink. Everyone had heard the hard slap to John's arm when he had tried to calm him down. God why didn't you pay more attention to that moment? Because you both had agreed to keep your distances? And going after him was out of discussion? Then the next day you'd barely seen him, just for a short moment during debriefs and that was it. The moment you had gotten up from your seat he was gone. And today you were supposed to go to a special op that had soon become a problem that eventually led to the two of you in the middle of a beach, it was a cloudy day and if it weren't for the heavy layers you wore you're certain you'd be shaking. Sometimes –and you were ashamed of it– you were oblivious to many things and it seemed that Ghost's anger toward you was one of them this time. "What happened?"
He inhales deeply.
"It's over. That's what happened."
Your heart sinks and you swallow hard. Your whole body loses color when he mutters those two words. Out of all the things, all the possibilities you thought he'd say to you, he decided to end everything. Shaking your head you try to touch his hand but he doesn't let you.
"Ghost where is all of this coming from I don't understand!" You choke out. "We were fine..."
"No. You were fine. If I wasn't enough you should've just said so."
"Stop... you... what the hell are you talking about???"
"Nothing that matters anymore. Keep walking and don't say another word. That's an order."
He turns and keeps walking as if nothing just happened. As if he didn't just completely broke your heart.
'You were fine'.
What was that supposed to mean? You think, walking a few meters behind him, scared to even say anything else; to even try to grab him by the arm and force him to talk. It would only make things worse right now.
By the time you reach the safe house it's started to rain the silence between the two is deafening and tense. Ghost's cold demeanor and hurtful words have left a scar. Never in a million years would you think you'd be here, with a broken, shattered heart and no explanation from his part.
Words that pierced through your soul.
That day something died inside you. And he was the reason.
-
Two weeks, three days and seven hours.
That's the time that's passed since that day at the beach. Two weeks since Simon broke you and gave you no reasons.
You're a disaster.
You barely eat or get any sleep. There's dark circles under your eyes and you're sure you've lost some weight too. Ghost has been gone on a mission alone with Johnny for a week now, which left you with a lot of spare time to think about the two of you.
More tears stream down your face when you remember that day. Had you missed something important? Was Ghost's mind somewhere dark? Somewhere it shouldn't be? God knows he was... difficult to say the least. But every single time you tried, tried to be there for him. Did those late nights at your home meant nothing? Had he not seen the way you looked at him? Had you not shown him enough of your affection? Everything you'd do for him if he simply asked?
Getting up from your bed you get ready for another day. Not bothering to lace your boots just shoving them inside your shoes you walk down the hallways until you get to the training room. Gaz is talking to John in the far corner, the Captain's arms are crossed over his chest while Kyle frowns and shakes his head. You don't to even go and salute them as you normally would do, instead you put your earphones on and hit the treadmill.
It doesn't last long though; after one minute someone stops it by pressing down the off button. Your brows knitted together as you stop, turning to look up at Gaz who smiles politely.
"Sorry for that, sweetheart. You okay?" You nod, but say nothing more. "Come here." He pats your shoulder and helps you down from the treadmill. If you could smile now you would. But no even the faintest, softest grin leaves your lips. Gaz takes a quick glimpse at your face and rubs the back of his neck. "You know, Soap and Ghost just got back. Heard Lt. was asking about you."
"Oh." You murmur. "Okay." You don't move nor dare to meet his eyes. "I'll just head back to my room."
"Uhmm. I- what I meant is he's looking for you..." Shaking your head you walk away, not having the energy to face Simon right now. And why did he need to see you? Made pretty clear that you two were done, therefore was no need to see each other unless it was work related.
-
"You really do like it here don't you." Your body goes rigid. This was supposed to be your safe place. The roof of the armory was rarely visited by anyone at this hour. Simon's voice seems softer than ever before but you don't answer. Not even turn to acknowledge him. You hear muttered words and then he crouches down to your level. "Price said you're not eating. Do we have to send you to the military counselor now?" How dare he? After all he caused this. You know he doesn't mean it in bad way, somehow he cares for you deep down. Your hands ball into fists, fighting the urge to snap at him, to push him down and just break him the way he broke you. But you don't because you still love him, and could never bring yourself to hurt him. Simon is staring intently at you, waiting, hoping for any sign. He knows he shouldn't be here. Bloody hell he knows you shouldn't even look his way never again. He deserves it. Every bit of it. "Talk to me, love. Please." It's a low whisper. A plea.
"What do you want Ghost?" You ask softly. Simon leans closer, sitting down with his legs propped up against his chest and arms resting on his knees. It's a funny look for someone his size.
"Jus' wanted to see you." You scoff playing with your hands, refusing to lock eyes with him because if you did you'd be done. "Wanted to explain..."
"Then just do it!" You sob. Your lower lip trembles. "And then leave."
"Fine." He agrees. "But I'm not leaving. I- I made a mistake, and took it out on you okay? I was scared."
"Scared?" Your head snaps to where he is sitting. It's painful just to look at him. "Why would you be scared Ghost?" You retaliate
He grumbles, never fancied when you called him that when you were alone. Quite the contradiction given the fact that he told you not to call him his name that day at the beach.
"Because I saw you." He points out. "That night. Everything you're missing for being with someone like me. Can't even show proper affection because it's not me... and you deserve more than that. More than me."
"Ghost..."
"No. Lemme finish, love." He swallows. It's always amusing how controlled he seems. "I lost it, yeah? You looked so happy. How on earth do I deserve you, on what universe do I deserve ya'?"
Sucking in a sharp breath you recall the moments that preceded the events. The sound of music blasting through the speakers, when you joined the rest of the soldiers on the other side of the pub. Private Miller had slung his arm over your shoulders in a friendly manner. You laughed and drank too much that night, it was joyful. Everyone was there, your team. You never thought he felt that way about it.
"Oh my... Simon." You cover your mouth and cry silently. He hesitated for a moment before pulling you close and into his lap. "Should've known something was wrong. Forgive me... I should've stayed with you, follow you after you left." You cry out.
You were scared too, for very different reasons. That he'd get tired of you eventually, that if you weren't cautious enough your secret would be known. Both would get suspended thus separated and discharged.
"No, love. You shouldn't have to go running after me. I should be running after you. Now forgive me, say you will. Or else I might just lose myself for good." You cradle his face in your hands lifting the balaclava just above the bridge of his nose. Thumb tracing his lower lip. Your tears have dried.
"I've missed you so much, Simon. All you gotta do is talk to me, always." He tightens his grip around you. "You think Price would let us go home tonight and not ask questions?"
His chuckle is short and soft.
"Yeah. I think he's known for a while now."

A Post-Ovathrax AU Geshu Lin design
Tried my best to keep the general essence of his original design whilst making him look more disheveled/"back from the grave." Lore, drafts, and design breakdown under the cut:
First Draft Notes
Tried to keep it somewhat loyal to his initial silhouette, maintaining the necklaces and instead burning up one of his arms (hence bandages). While I did like this draft it still felt kind of wishy washy and not at all like an AU version, just more like Geshu Lin if he unbuttoned his shirt LOL
I also burnt the wrong arm in this draft. Geshu is right-handed...
Second (Final) Draft Notes
On the second draft, I decided that Geshu needed a bit more of a solid design motif; all characters have one. Jiyan, for example, is a dragon, Calcharo's is the Tacet corruption, so on.
Geshu on the other hand, has no real theme (at least, from what we've seen of him), so I took it upon myself to take some creative liberties.
First off, I decided to go with a "cage" sort of theme for his lower half; we can already see this in Geshu's original design, but it's not as heavy-handed about it. I actually doubt it was intentional at all, but given that I already see him as a tragic hero (a man doing his best in a terrible situation, relatively mentally isolated, trapped, etc), I thought it best to enunciate that design aspect to be more "front and center."
Next up, the chains; in my head canon for Post-Ovathrax Geshu Lin, this is sort of a design for also a "post prison-break" Geshu Lin.
Hold on; what prison-break?
As far as the general gist goes, his body was found overclocked and comatose by the Jinzhou government after the events of the Battle Beneath the Cresent. Due to public outcry for his crimes and need for a scapegoat after a countless loss of life, he was put under bare minimum care until he awoke, and then imprisoned off the coast of Huanglong.
One thing led to another, and the Fractsidus caught wind of his presence; they attempted to break him out and sway him to their cause given his already close encounter with a Threnodian and an assumed hatred/need for vengeance against Jinzhou, but the operation ultimately failed and Geshu Lin got away. Little did everyone know, his sacrifice to the black flames essentially burnt away his memories and sense of self identity, so he's also an amnesiac as much as the Rover is.
His chains are used both as weapons and as a way to keep his sword with him. I can imagine him using it almost like a chain mace or a way to "grapple" (lasso?) enemies to him. They're also meant to symbolize how he's chained to his life as a warrior and his past (one that he doesn't even remember, no less).
I'm still wishy-washy on whether the broadblade he carries is The broadblade or not; I reckon it was destroyed in his fight with Ovathrax; or rather, his original broadblade was not a physical weapon, but something his Forte allowed him to manifest into physical form due to his strong sense of self identity/self-confidence (seen in the few second-hand accounts we've had about him); but now that his sense of identity is gone, he cannot manifest the original to much success. For now, his weapons are as much of a shell of their former selves as he is, thus lacking luster or intricacy.
Third, his bandages. You might've noticed these wrap him head to toe (tits to toe really); Geshu acquired these due to the significant burns he sustained on his body during his sacrifice to the black flames. His right arm sustained the brunt of it, but is mainly covered by his huge sleeve. I believe this is intentional by him so he doesn't stick out as much whilst wandering through Huanglong trying to piece together who he was.
Though for the fun of it, here's what that arm looks like:
The rest of his bandaged skin under the bandages looks like normal burn scars. His right arm is mutated due to its proximity to the Threnodian in his final moments, which I like to imagine as capable of inflicting mutations in the bodies of resonators, especially overclocking ones who are already physically vulnerable.
If you want to think about this in an excessively bad-ass manner though, I have an additional headcanon (may or may not be canon to the AU; I think I'll leave it up to interpretation) that his right arm was already severely injured to the point of disintegration by his overclocking; so he ripped an arm straight off of the wings of the Dreamless and took it as his own. In this scenario, the combination of overclocking and absorbing a TD's bodypart as his own is what resulted in the almost complete erasure of his memory.
Also, for the sake of stacking more badassery because why the fuck not, Dreamless' body is already fractured all over during her first manifestation against the Rover and Jiyan. I like to entertain the idea that she ended up this way (and with her core exposed) because of Geshu's initial encounter with Ovathrax and assumedly Dreamless as well.
If you can't already tell, I love this guy too much. That's all for this post though! Thank you for reading if you managed to get through all of this.

Chapter 43: Light Behind The Door
TW
Description of panic attack/flash back
Master List | Prev | Next
“You haven’t been sleeping,” Seonghwa stated bluntly, shaking his head. “Sit down on your bed so I can check you out, please.
“Hey, give me a break, be happy I slept yesterday uninterrupted.” You huffed, sitting down as he asked. “I’m not exactly in the best mental state, alright?”
Seonghwa sighed, motioning if you could turn your face side to side so he could see how things were healing. “Have you been eating?”
“As much as I can tolerate. Some days are better than others but I am trying to keep up eating at least once a day.”
You could tell he didn’t like the answer by his frown but made no comment. “Pain?”
“There is some pain. If I move weird or lay on my sides too long, my ribs and sides still hurt, but I can tolerate it. The burns on my side itch, especially the one on my chest but you said nothing can really help with that. I feel pretty weak too, but that could also be the mental block.”
He asked you to unbutton some of your shirt so he could see the healing brand. You had removed the bandages prior to him coming in, knowing there was no use to cover it back up if it needed to be checked out. Leaning your head back, you tried your best to hold back from flinching when Seonghwa leaned in, but still leaned away. Seonghwa hummed, standing straight and turning to dig into his bag.
“So far, everything is looking alright. I’m not concerned about anything physically. I’d like you to try and eat more, get more sleep as well. I did get that heart monitor, you could be fine at this point, however, please humor me and wear it for two weeks.” He showed you the small device, explaining that it needed leads and wires since the wireless one would need to sit on the sensitive skin around the brand. This made it easier to get around that.
You weren’t going to like it, but you’d listen and do as you were told to get healthier. He asked you to reapply the bandages to your chest before continuing. Slowly, Seonghwa showed you where to place all the sticky leads, avoiding as much of the healing skin as possible. You hated the feel of the adhesive and the wires ghosting over your chest, skin crawling and the already annoying itch jumping to a new level.
“Only two weeks and if it’s all clear, you can trash it, got it?” He managed to crack a small smile, seeing you pout and hearing your huff. “It’s going to be alright, Mouse, at some point you might not even feel it.”
“F to doubt.” You scoffed, dropping your gaze. “Can I ask you something?”
Perking up, he nodded, bringing the rolling chair over and sitting down. “Of course you can, Mouse.”
“Have you ever pursued therapy?”
A quiet hum left him, nodding his head in understanding as he gazed aimlessly. “Personally, no, though multiple within ATZ have. Are you considering it?”
“Last night I was asked by Cheol if I would. Rheia has someone, I said it was a good idea but I have a lot of self doubt that is fucking me up. And also needing to trust someone else with what I’ve gone through… I’m not sure of everything basically.”
Staying silent for a moment, Seonghwa clasped his hands together in thought, leaving you wondering what was running through his mind. “You are going to be unsure of yourself every single day, there isn’t a doubt in the world about that. However, do you think you’ll regret not speaking with a professional to help? Will you regret not taking a healthy step to overcome this? In my eyes, the pros will always outweigh the cons of it. Yes, you can worry about trusting someone, but they hold more confidentiality then I probably would. If Rheia trusts this person, I doubt there will also be any issue.”
Swallowing thickly, you understood what he meant perfectly. You would regret not pursuing help for yourself, you’d regret that you could stay a shell of yourself willingly.
“Can I ask who in ATZ got therapy?”
“Jongho, Hongjoong, San, and Mingi.” There wasn’t any hesitation in his answer, the strongest all have a low point. “All for similar but different reasons. They got treated nonetheless. They know when they want to go back after something happens. They know that it’s a safe space and it's a healthy space with no judgment. I believe they are stronger for seeking help since they are willing to treat themselves.”
You unintentionally started to pick at the loose skin around your nails, giving a short, minuscule nod to yourself. “Did…you bring Jongho with you?” You were sure you heard him earlier…
Seonghwa snickered, shoulder shaking. “He has been yapping my ear off, asking to come today since you’ve replied to zero of his texts.”
“Yeah, it was overwhelming with over a hundred messages between everything. I was lucky I could message one person in the house.”
“I could only imagine.” He shook his head and stood, reaching into his bag once more and retrieving the cream for your brand, bandages, and medical tape. “These should last you until I see you next, but let me know if that changes. Would you like for me to send Jongho in?”
“If you don’t mind?”
“Not at all. I’ll message you when I’d like to stop by next.”
“Thanks, maybe next time I’ll be able to come to you.”
His lips slipped once more into a gentle smile. “I’d like to see that, Mouse.”
Seonghwa bid you a farewell, clicking his tongue just beyond the threshold. “You are a pest.”
“Shut up-” You could hear the pout on Jongho’s face.
“Go on, we came in the same car so please don’t take forever.”
A thank you left the younger man’s lips before Jongho stepped in, shutting the door behind him. He looked frazzled, needing a few nights rest similar to you, but you said nothing. They would be the pot calling the kettle black. He quickly placed himself down on the chair Seonghwa once occupied.
“Hi.” He started and you let out a breathy laugh.
“Hey, sorry for not getting back to you-”
Jongho shook his head, clicking his tongue. “Don’t even worry about it. Wooyoung talked to Chan and they said you were alright so I wasn’t too worried.”
“Thank god because opening my phone has been a no go. Too many messages.” You huffed out a sign, shivering at the thought. “Kinda wanted to send a mass fuck off but I decided against it.”
“I think a lot of us might have raided the house if you did.” Hearing him laugh had a light, calm feeling settling in your chest. “But I'm glad you’ve been taking care of yourself as much as you can. You’ve been through something horrible and I’m proud of you.”
“I have a long road ahead of-”
“It is still a road to travel forward, no matter the bumps in it.”
Your gaze fell, brushing your hair back from your face. “Jongho…Can you tell me why you went to therapy?”
He paused then sat back, folding his head in his lap. “After I aged out of foster care, I had a lot of anger built up. I can’t even begin to describe it. Once you and I got separated, it just got more and more angry. I met Seonghwa at the clinic after I got into a fight on the street and was banged up pretty bad. I lashed out a bunch at him especially when he introduced me to Hongjoong. Joong suggested it and I’ve been going on and off for a lot of reasons from my childhood to my current work.”
You took in his words wordlessly, nodding along so he knew you were listening. He didn’t look troubled by talking about it either, which was refreshing. You know some people are scared to admit to seeking therapy due to the stigmas of mental health.
“I’m going to try therapy out.” You admitted to him and the tenderest smile spread on his lips. Sighing through your nose, you scratched the back of your neck awkwardly. “We’ll see how it goes. I’ve never gone before now.”
“Unless they are shit, they will, well should , work on your pace to build up the confidence and trust to talk. Most have amazing patience. Mine matched my energy greatly back then and evolved how I needed them to.” He snickered, drumming his hands on his thighs before standing. “Tell me how it goes, okay? Let some people help if you can manage.”
You shook your head but grinned. “I’ll try, Jongho. Tell everyone I said hi and that I’m doing okay so they don’t worry.”
“Will do, chief. Get some rest.” Jongho gave a wave on his wave out, closing the door behind him.

You got the information from Seungcheol after Seonghwa and Jongho left. Staring at the number, ready to be called, you panicked, frozen on the bed.
Why was it so hard to ask for help?
Was it your long standing hyper-independence? More than likely. You were used to handling all your issues by yourself. You were used to getting up despite your problems and moving on with your days.
Now you couldn’t easily do that.
You closed the phone app and directed yourself to your messages, finding the one group chat you needed at that moment.
[To Threeway 12:23 PM] Are you home?
From beyond the door, you heard something drop and a call of Joshua’s name from Jeonghan. You couldn’t help the smile that fought to spread on your lips.
[To Threeway 12:24 PM] Very subtle Can you both come here?
“Are we in trouble?” Joshua questioned Jeonghan and the other groaned.
“If we are, I’m not at fault, I haven’t done anything. I am blaming Cheol if we did something wrong.”
They approached quickly and knocked, waiting to hear permission to enter before the door opened. They stepped in with wide eyes, curious as to why you had summoned them into your safe space. You tucked yourself into the pillows against the headboard, clearing your throat.
“Can you sit?”
Jeonghan took his desk chair while Joshua pulled an ottoman over. They looked nervous, tired, maybe a little lost. Jeonghan’s nails were picked at and the skin around his nail beds were red and irritated. Joshua’s lips were dry, picked, and had definitely bled at some point. They looked as hollow as you felt.
“Are you okay? Do you need anything?” Jeonghan fired off questions and you shook your head, leaving him stumped. “Then-”
“How are you two ?”
Both of them made a face, like you just asked the dumbest question on the planet. You waited, raising a brow the longer the silence stretched on. They shared a look, unsaid words you couldn’t read. When they both looked back at you, Joshua was the first to break.
“I miss you.” His shoulders dropped. “I’m worried about you. So is everyone else. We are just going through the motions of each day. It hasn’t been easy.”
Jeonghan picked at his nails and you grabbed a small pillow, tossing it quickly at him. He huffs and sits on his hands like a child, leg bouncing anxiously. He takes longer to speak but his head drops when he does.
“I can’t sleep. We know we can’t fix this and, god , does it fucking suck. I wish this was a dream we could all wake up from soon-” Jeonghan groaned out of frustration, throwing his head back. A sniffle was heard. “I’ll kill whoever hurt you the minute you feel comfortable enough to tell us, Mouse.”
The seriousness in his tone wasn’t necessary to know he was speaking the truth. Joshua gave a short nod in agreement, the rest of SVT probably held the same opinion, let alone the entire mafia alliance.
The faces of the Monsta X members flashed behind your eyes and you sunk into the mountain of pillows. Goose bumps spread all over your body, skin stinging with pins and needles. Your eyes went unfocused, breath held in your lungs burned to come out. The back of your throat burned and you were reminded of the gasps for air you took once you were pulled out of the water filled box. Your mind honed in on the pain that subtly radiated through your rips and the skin covering there, the electrical burns you tried to ignore. You bit the inside of your cheeks, holding back from scratching your skin raw.
You still felt trapped in Limbo, only a new version of it.
“Mouse?” The call of your name snapped you back to reality. You boyfriends looked concerned, shaky eyes scanning you. “You with us?”
Nodding, you blinked a few times to clear the fog that settled over your mind. Looking down, you noticed your nails were digging roughly into your palms, leaving harsh credent indents. Unclenching your hands, and your jaw, flattened your palms out on your thighs, sighing.
“I’m trying to start therapy…for all of this.” You motioned aimlessly at yourself. “But I’m having a hard time calling to set up an appointment.”
Joshua leaned forward in his seat, elbows resting on his knees. “Do you know why it is hard?”
“I have a few guesses.” Shrugging, you rolled your head to the side and felt the needed stretch.
“Would you want to talk to us about them?” He continued, “if you are comfortable.”
There wasn’t a reason to hide the reasons from them. You know you trusted them despite the proximity issue you had going on currently.
“Asking for help when you’ve never seen a professional is hard. I’ve always been a keep it to yourself, hold onto it, and move on.” Your leg bounced with jitters. “I never sought out therapy before and now that I am, I’m nervous of what will happen. I have so many ‘what ifs’ running through my head that are also getting the better of me.”
Jeonghan cleared his throat. “I can’t speak from experience, but…you won’t know what will happen until you call and take that step.”
How did so many of them know what to say when you needed it even when the comments were simple? They spoke with grace and a wind beneath their wings. You envied the decorum they showed.
You sucked in a deep breath and held it in your chest for a few seconds, calming the anxious heart beating. Placing a hand over the bandaged brand, you made up your mind and reached for your phone.
“Will you both stay as I call and make the appointment?” Why the fuck were you nervous asking that?
“Of course, sweetheart.” Joshua’s sweet, calming voice grounded you.
Jeonghan hummed his similar answer, smiling. “Always here to help, love.”
It still took you a few moments to make the phone call, staring displeased at the numbers boring back at you. Your significant others were waiting with bated breaths, silence as you built up the mental courage to proceed. When you pushed the call button, they both gave you gazes full of pride but the dial tone spiked your anxiety.
The woman who answered sounded nice, maybe an older woman. Before she was able to get any information, you informed her that Rheia had given you the number and she hummed into the phone. She asked you some general questions for your name, birthday, and asked if you’d like to be seen as soon as possible. She took a note of you saying you’d like online appointments to start, hearing the clicking on a keyboard on the other side of the line. You would need a computer and a webcam, the doctor deeming it a hundred per cent necessary to know what she was working with.
By the end of the call, you had an afternoon appointment the next day, a lighter feeling in your chest, and two wide, gorgeous smiles gleaming back at you.
“You did good, sweetheart.” Joshua beamed, nudging Jeonghan with his elbow.
Jeonghan looked just as proud, still sitting on his hands to stop his nervous habits. “I’m – We’re proud of you.”
“That took more energy out of me than I expected.” You slumped, pulling a pillow close to your chest.
“Join us in the living room?” Jeonghan asked. “We can put on some movie and eat since we were going to make something anyways.”
You thought through the idea, knowing you leaving the room would be beneficial. You also needed to speak to Wonwoo about using Pandora tomorrow afternoon…
“That sounds amazing…let’s go.”

It was the second time you had fallen asleep in the living room and woke hours later. Similar to the first time, you didn’t dream, only calm, necessary slumber.
After your previous loveseat nap, you stayed up all night. Once Seungcheol went off to bed fully, you really tired to fall asleep once more in bed but it never came. Though he said he would wash the blankets, your antsy energy had you washing and drying them all, sitting impatiently on the floor of the laundry room. With hours to spare after the laundry, you…did all the dishes and cleared out the dishwasher
You snuck into Pandora again, continuing on with simple games and a movie to occupy you, curled up in your bundle of blankets. At some point, you fell asleep, waking up to a nightmare covered in sweat, and trudged upstairs after cleaning up to sit in Jeonghan’s room.
Now it seemed about the same.
The house was peacefully quiet, you definitely missed dinner but a small note was on the side table, only noticed when you sat up.
Didn’t want to wake you, dinner is in the fridge - JS
There was a small, attempted doodle of a chicken, if you had to guess, directly under his handwriting. It made you shake your head and smile. Quietly, you found the plate of baked chicken and vegetable medley. How did you honestly sleep through them cooking? Typically they were loud, sound filling the whole house, especially at dinner time.
“Maybe games…” You whispered to no one, heating up the food in the microwave, watching it spin and spin until it was heated through. “Definitely games…”
With food in hand and a blanket acquired, you kicked the Gengar bean bag chair towards the door to Pandora. You pushed it down the stairs, landing unceremoniously at the door. You tried to step over it to press your hand to the print pad, keeping the food from spilling, and pushing the door open with some struggle.
Kicking the bean bag through the door and shutting it behind you, the clearing of someone’s throat had you looking up.
Wonwoo was sitting comfy in his computer chair, hair a mess, headphones on, and two monster energy drinks beside his keyboard. He pushed his glasses up tiredly, blinking up at you.
“Hey,” He spoke first, eyeing the bean bag chair.
“Typically you are asleep at this time.”
“You know I know you’ve been coming in here, right?” It was an innocent question, there wasn’t any accusation behind his tone.
You set your lips in a flat line, kicking the bean bag chair lightly to make more talking room. “Kinda figured. I only came down when you weren’t here because- you know…”
A beat of silence passed before he snorted, holding back his grin. “You want me to leave my space?”
“What- no- shut up.” You stammered, shaking your head. “It’s fine, just-”
“Not too close, got it.”
You paused, stepping away from the bean bag chair. “This is heavy, can you help me?”
Wonwoo let out a low rumble of a laugh and took his headset off to stand. You moved further away, letting him easily lift your gift from Jun, finally being put to use after a while. He waddled over to the lounge area and placed it in a spot beside the coffee table, pushing said table over to make more room.
His eyes shifted to you, wordlessly inquiring if it was good enough. With your nod, he returned to his previous spot at his desk and you moved to settle down with your food and blanket. You ate quietly, listening to each clack of him pressing keys on his keyboard in the tranquil space.
“Do you want to play a game?” You asked, both of you knowing the meaning behind your outwardly innocent question. There was always a conversion to follow the flow of video game teamwork. You had questions and he would give you honest, non- I’ll kill them answers.
Lifting your head to look back at him, there was hesitation in his eyes.
“Are you sure?”
Those words rested heavy in the air, a moment for you to take back your question if you wished to. There was no knowing where the conversation would devolve into or how you’d react, but you wanted some clarity before your therapy session the coming day.
“Yeah I am.”
He sat himself down as far as he could from you on the couch, watching you pull up some two player game and slide a controller across the coffee table to him. Neither of you jumped straight into questions, getting into the rhythm of the game before taking that step. The air around you felt heavy, thick enough to be cut through with a knife.
“What did Seonghwa say about your condition?”
Wonwoo, thankfully, broke the silence first after that teamwork rhythm was in place, making you let out the breath you were unknowingly holding.
“He said everything is healing alright but I need a stupid heart monitor until I see him next.” You hadn’t forgotten about the wires that rubbed uncomfortably on your skin, having to fight the urge to rip it off for hours at that point.
“Everyone has been in a better mood since you came out of your room yesterday.” He chuckled through his nose. “I hope Jihoon’s ultimatum wasn’t too hard.”
“Really it was the push I needed.” Truthfully you were grateful for the other man’s quick thinking, not…that you would tell him that yet. “I’m still a little iffy but everyone is being respectful which I appreciate.”
A hum left him. “Do you know why you are feeling like that?”
“Not exactly, there are some ideas in my head but…I’m planning to figure it out in the first therapy session tomorrow.”
“Oh.” Out of the corner of your eye, you watched him nod, keeping his focus on the game.
“And I either need to borrow a computer or come down here for a webcam tomorrow afternoon.”
“I can set it up down here. Probably more privacy than upstairs.” He winced when his character fell off the edge of the map. “I could lock everyone but you and me from Pandora.”
“That would be mean, Wonu.”
“But effective for maximum privacy.”
“You just like being an introvert that lives in his man cave. If Cheol let you, this would be your room, hermit.”
Wonwoo rumbled with laughter, letting a pleasant silence settle over the space now that the awkwardness was broken. The quiet clicks from the controllers were familiar, preparing you for the questions bubbling in both your and his minds.
The silence stretched for nearly an hour before Wonwoo seemed to have enough, pausing the game and setting his controller down. He said nothing at first, only leaning forward to place his elbows on his thighs and face in his hands. He took in a slow deep breath, his leg starting to bounce restlessly.
“Mouse,” His somber tone had the hair on the back of your neck standing on edge. “I need you to be honest with me and we never have to bring it up again.”
Don’t-
“Just shake or nod your head and I’ll understand.” Wonwoo lifted his eyes, adjusting his glasses. His eyebrows were furrowed together tightly, pain behind his eyes. “Did Monsta X do this to you?”
Hearing the name out loud for the first time since waking up made every muscle in your body tense. You felt the weight of the world pressing down on your chest, pushing all the air out.
The warmth that once came from the blanket wrapped around you had long gone frigid. You flinched at the sensation of ice cold water drenching every inch of your skin. You heard something – or someone – but the sound was far off in the distance and…muffled, underwater. Something was- There was this loud beeping.
You couldn’t move. You were back in that horrid metal chair in that damp, moldy room with Kihyun’s sick, sadistic smirk staring back at you. You knew what was going to happen next, that was the part that scared you the most. The anticipation of what was to come was harrowing. You didn’t want to relive the pain. You didn’t want to relive your worst nightmare play by play, knowing how it is always going to end. And you couldn’t stop it .
There wasn’t any fight left, you couldn’t even attempt to fight in this…state, whenever you were. Had you just woken up and everything before waking up in the ATZ wasn’t real? Were you still their prisoner? Was your mind making up lies to help you cope?
Dread…
Powerless…
Vulnerable…
Ashamed…
Ashamed you let them get to you so easily. Ashamed you didn’t realize earlier that Monsta X was your stalkers. Ashamed you couldn’t even hear their group name without having a flashback.
Ashamed. Period…
Something was touching you, something placed on your head. You weren’t able to move away from it, trying to wipe Nightmare’s and Joker’s faces from your vision.
The piercing sound of piano keys met your ears. It was played loudly, louder than the scenes flashing through your mind. Your vision started to blur. The sound was soft, a slow rhythm that had your heart beating slower in time with the notes. The slow raise of a violin joined along the piano, calm and quaint, a breath of air rushing into your lungs. A low beat of intermittent percussion fading in wasn’t too bold to remind you of the banging on the metal box, reminding you that you had escaped. The vibration of the cymbal brought some feeling back into your arms, electrifying the reminder you were alive .
The room slowly transitioned from where you were held captive to the low lit space of Pandora.
Taking in a shaky gasp of air, your entire body shuddered as you came back to reality.
You felt the pressure of headphones on your head, the song repeating from the beginning. Wonwoo knelt on the floor in front of you, concern gracing his features. You reached up to wipe your face, met only with tears streaming down your cheeks. Your hands shook with panicked energy, feeling your heart slow to a somewhat normal rate. The other said something but the music was too loud and you felt like a bobble head at how dizzy you were.
It took you a moment to remove the headset, letting the ringing in your ears play out as you refocused on Wonwoo.
An apology flimsily spilled from your lips and Wonwoo looked…annoyed, but you didn’t think it was at you.
“Why are you apologizing?” It was a rhetorical question. “ I’m sorry , do you need anything?”
“Ju-” Your voice broke and you groaned. “Juice sounds amazing-”
He was gone before you even finished the request, leaving the door to the basement open in his wake.
You took a moment to bundle yourself back up into the blanket, breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Sniffling to calm your tears, you tried to make yourself small, curling up to seemingly protect yourself.
“Here.” You didn’t hear him return, flinching some as he placed the small glass of juice down, happy to see the straw in it. “Anything else?”
“I’m okay, thank you.” You shakily reached for the glass and took a long sip, shivering at how sweet it was. “Just give me a second.”
Wonwoo sat on the floor in front of you, keeping a watchful eye on you for any issues. You were able to hear the song blasting through the headphone still, letting the ballad’s instrumental continue to ground you.
“I’m sorry.” Wonwoo repeated, fists balled in his lap. “I didn’t mean-”
“Please don’t tell them yet-” You cut him off, downing the rest of the juice and setting the cup aside. “I don’t think I’ll be able to handle hearing everyone talk about them …nor do I think I’m ready to say it or admit everything yet, I can’t even say it…”
Wonwoo studied you, his gaze flicking around your person, making you huddle in on yourself more. You heard him sigh and he stood, ruffling his hair in frustration.
“Fine- Fuck, okay…” He didn’t sound pleased, but he stared down at you. “You promise, when you are ready, you will tell them, right?”
Nodding, you pulled the blanket up to your chin. “Yeah.”
“Can you…promise you won’t tell them I knew first?”
If you weren’t so mentally exhausted, you would laugh. “Yeah, promise.”
“I am, however, going to put some eyes on them if I can.” He held your gaze. “Just so we are clear. No moves, just watching them.”
“I understand.” You and him stared silently for a beat, only for you to point weakly at the still on TV. “I’m not going to be able to sleep anytime soon…can we continue playing?”
Disbelief crossed his face but Wonwoo sighed, shaking his head. “Yeah, we can keep playing. I’ll need to sleep eventually though and set up the computer before that.”
“Okay…I might just stay down here all night though.” You grabbed your controller, watching him take a seat. “Thank you, Wonwoo.”
“Don’t thank me, I spiraled you into a PTSD episode-”
“No, you fucking idiot, not that. Thank you for getting me out of it, for one thing, and another for understanding.”
“Oh…you’re welcome.”
“Now help me kick this boss’s ass.”

Flow like water
A Bonniecles self indulgent fic
Don’t like self shipping? Don’t interact
Bonnie always felt gross, both inside and out, they always let their brain rot away with terrible thoughts about their body or mind.
It wasn’t ever easy to escape such things. Once a thought came in it was impossible for Bonnie to let it go. They’d become so focused on it that they would forget to take care of themselves.
And with the handful of missions that Bonnie and the Octonauts are given almost daily, it gave Bonnie even less time to do so.
They lay in bed, as they always did when they weren’t in the library, The weird itchy feeling on their skin, and their unkempt hair bothered them so much but they didn’t have the energy to take care of it.
Bonnie just sat quietly, waiting for something to happen, whether it was someone sounding the Octo-alert, the Vegimals handing out a fresh batch of kelp-cakes. It’s not like Bonnie was desperate for adventure or anything, they just wanted their thoughts to shut up for once.
Up in the HQ, Barnacles, and Dashi monitored the creatures that surrounded the Octopod with all their varying splendor. Shellington was checking in on Peso and Kwazii who were out on a mission to collect samples for research purposes. Not a day goes by where Captain Barnacles forgets to thank his lucky stars to have taken Professor Inkling’s offer to be where he is now.
The beauty and majesty of the vast ocean truly spoke to him, ever since Captain Barnacles was a little cub, his great love was exploring every nook and cranny of the world around him, he loved learning, he loved swimming, he loved the whole world around him, and now he gets to see the beautiful blue ocean every single day, he has the pleasure of waking up to the sight of various marine animals swimming beside his window. It’s all he could ever want.
After another hour of keeping watch for any trouble on the reef, Captain Barnacles decided it was a good time for a break. He stepped back from his port in the HQ and turned to Dashi and Shellington. “I’ll be on break to check up on a few things, please let me know if you two need anything.”
“Will do, Captain.” They both replied. Dashi checked the computer screens for any sort of weather updates, and Shellington sent a map to guide Peso and Kwazii.
“Excellent.” Captain Barnacles smiled and headed down the Octo-chute. Bonnie’s absence wasn’t really a surprise, he knew they kept to themselves most of the time. Even around the Captain himself, Bonnie would hide in their own shell, but that didn’t mean they didn’t like him.
Bonnie loved everyone on the Octopod. They felt safe in the mighty ship, it was their home with a team they respected, but so much self doubt prevented them from ever being honest, they didn’t know how the other Octonauts felt, they couldn’t read their minds, if they could it would make things a lot easier.
The safest option in Bonnie’s mind was to just lock themselves away from everyone unless they were needed.
Bonnie curled up in their bed, wishing their thoughts could go away. They lightly gripped their covers in frustration at the constant battle in their mind that never seemed to end.
“My love, are you alright?” Barnacles’ gentle voice echoed through the door followed by a knock.
Bonnie let out an incomprehensible noise, it sounded like they were trying to talk but wanted to cry. Which made the polar bear worry more. “Bonnie?”
His partner sat up and quietly wrapped themselves in their warm, safe blanket prison. Pangs of anxiety shot through Bonnie’s neglected body, or was it hunger? They couldn’t tell the difference anymore. They didn’t know how to tell Captain Barnacles how bad they felt, anytime it got this bad to the point of skipping meals or baths. They didn’t want to bring the team down.
“May I come in, Bonnie?” Barnacles pleaded, “Please let me in, dear..” his voice was warm as ever even with worry painted in.
Bonnie reluctantly crawled over to the screen and tapped it, which split the crease and opened the door. Barnacles looked up at Bonnie, who hadn’t even changed out of their pajamas, their eyes were sunken and heavy, whether it was from crying or a lack of sleep was anyone’s guess, their hair was matted and tangled, though it looked as though Bonnie barely brushed it earlier. They couldn’t bring themselves to speak.
Barnacles expression softened, his eyes gleamed with understanding “one of those days again, dear?” He asked.
Bonnie nodded and plopped back down on their bed. The little polar bear sat next to them “Have you eaten?” He gently took their hand and rubbed their knuckles with his thumb. Bonnie shook their head again and their eyes welled.
“I see.” He held their hand tighter “And have you bathed?” He noticed Bonnie’s constant itching and squirming, they must’ve felt so uncomfortable and gross, but Barnacles never changed his mind about how much he loved them.
“No, I haven’t.” Bonnie mumbled, avoiding eye contact. Their mind still cursing with thoughts of possible disappointment or anger from the Captain. Yes, such ideas were irrational and stupid, but that didn’t make them any less present.
“I was doing so well..” Bonnie lamented, their voice started to break. “I was going on missions, but I’m back where I started.. I’m so tired.”
Captain Barnacles solemnly watched as Bonnie struggled. It always ached him, he wasn’t new to this quiet shell Bonnie kept themselves in.
But he wasn’t gonna let Bonnie rot, and he wasn’t going to leave them all alone, not ever. He gently put his paw on their back “Would you like me to help you, dear? I can run you a bath and make you some lunch, we can all have the rest of the day off.” He offered with a kind smile.
They looked at him and raised an eyebrow. “Why would you..” they paused. “But why?”
“Because I care about you, Bonnie, no matter how you see yourself, I adore you and everything you are, no matter how messy or ugly you see yourself as.” Barnacles spilled his heart out in front of them, he’d do it countless times if he had to. “Please let me help you.”
The fear and guilt in Bonnie’s heart subsided as Barnacles offered his paw. Their eyes welled with tears and they swiftly held the small bear in their arms and cried against his warm embrace. They felt so stupid.
“I have you, dear. It’s okay. You never upset me.” His voice warmed the coldness of Bonnie’s heart away, if not just a little.
“I’m sorry.” They sobbed against his chest, “Captain I’m so sorry for hiding so much, and I’m sorry I keep crying like this.”
“Bonnie please don’t apologize for being this way, this job, all of life as a whole, it’s hard, that’s why we must confide in each other.” Barnacles gently held their cheek and kissed their lips. “You shouldn’t have to suffer in silence, if I’m being honest I’m still trying to learn that. I can’t blame you for being stuck like this, all I can do is help pull you out and that’s what I want to do, now.”
“Please help me, Bear..” Bonnie finally whispered. “I hate how gross I feel right now.”
“Of course dear, pick out some clothes and I’ll get the bath ready.” He stepped back and smiled at them. Bonnie obliged and got out of bed as Barnacles left the room, a smile on his face.
Before heading to the bathroom, Barnacles made his way to the kitchen, where the vegimals were sorting through the cook book, brainstorming ideas for Dinner and putting away clean dishes.
He walked in and gently cleared his throat “Excuse me, Vegimals?”
The little critters paused their activity and turned their attention to the captain. Tunip waddling over front and center. “Yes, Cappy?”
“I’d like you to make a warm bowl of pesto kelp noodles for Bonnie, with sun dyed tomatoes just as they like it” The Captain ordered, Tomminow worriedly approached him “Mama?”
Barnacles gave a comforting smile “Don’t worry, Tomminow, Bonnie will be okay, they’re just not feeling well, I’m doing what I can to help, I promise.”
Tominow hugged him for reassurance. “Help Mama, please..” she begged, the polar bear knelt down and hugged her right back “I promise, Tomminow, on my honor, I’ll take care of Bonnie, as their partner and as an Octonaut, don’t any of you worry about a thing.” He stood back up and smiled.
Tomminow nodded, then the vegimals all scattered to different parts of the kitchen, grabbing different items as they prepared the pesto kelp noodles.
With that, Captain Barnacles and walked off to the bathroom, Bonnie was already standing beside the door with some clothes. He sheepishly opened the door “I’m sorry, dear, I had to make a quick detour, the vegimals are preparing lunch for you.”
Bonnie nodded “I understand.” They opened the door and walked in, Barnacles followed close behind, Bonnie sat aside as he got the bath ready “Warm or cold?”
“Warm, please?” Bonnie requested as Barnacles turned the knobs to the tub and placed the plug over the drain
As the water ran, Captain Barnacles grabbed a bottle of shampoo and conditioner, along with body wash and bubble bath.
As the water rose, he poured some bubble bath in and ran his paw along the water so the bubbles could spread, Bonnie watched silently. Barnacles smiled the whole time he spent preparing the bath.
Bonnie removed their clothes and when the tub filled, they carefully sat down. The warm, soapy water cascaded against their stressed skin, they let out a sigh and lay back, completely engulfed in pleasure from the cleanliness to come.
Barnacles watched with love, he wordlessly let Bonnie enjoy the moment, it always bought him a great deal of joy to help.
Bonnie opened their eyes and smiled. “That feels.. so good..” they sighed.
“Glad it does, Bonnie.” Captain Barnacles let a chuckle escape from his muzzle. “Just relax, my love, let me take care of you.” He gently cupped some water with his paws and very lightly rinsed Bonnie’s hair.
“You always do, Bear.” Bonnie looked at him with a playful smile. Barnacles smiled right back at them. “I’m always happy to take care of you, dear. You mean more to me than anything else.”
Barnacles began rinsing Bonnie’s hair, the sound of the water dripping and pouring filled the room, but it was a comfortable atmosphere.
Bonnie’s hair, while weighted with the water had fallen gently costing the sides of their face, Captain Barnacles gently moved their bangs away with his paw. Bonnie kissed his nose and smiled.
“Are you ready for Shampoo?” He asked, his cheeks slightly red from Bonnie’s little kiss. They responded with a nod.
Captain Barnacles took the shampoo bottle and poured a little into his paws, then, he gently lathered it against their scalp, he hummed a soft tune as he tended to Bonnie, giving them this sort of care was always an honor to him. No matter what Bonnie thought of themselves, Barnacles was always happy to jump in and take care of them, or help them with anything they need.
As Barnacles massaged Bonnie’s scalp, Bonnie wondered for a moment about him. “Bear, I don’t think I’ve met anyone as passionate about the ocean as you, why is that?”
His heart practically glowed with joy, one of his great loves was the ocean, it was his home, as long as he was with the Octonauts of course.
“If I’m being honest, I feel free when I’m in the sea, it’s big and it’s beautiful.” He began. “Even as a cub, all I ever wanted to do was swim, in a strange way it felt like it was easier to get along with the sea creatures than other polar bears, it just feels right being in the ocean.”
Bonnie tilted their head “you didn’t get along with other Polar Bears?” They asked, wondering about what possible reasons Barnacles would have to not get along with someone, let alone other polar bears.
“Oh, we didn’t fight or anything, I just felt like I didn’t belong.” He confessed “For many different reasons, for one, I don’t like eating meat, but I’m sure you already know that. I’ve never had the hunting instinct, not since I was really little.”
Bonnie had noticed that the dishes served on the octopod barely included meats of any kind. It was all Vegetarian dishes. even the fish biscuits that were made to deter predators came from stuff like tofu.
They lay their head back as Barnacles rinsed the shampoo from their hair and continued talking:
“Another reason, well. I just never really fit in, you see, I’m autistic, Bonnie. I’m sure that speaks for itself.” Barnacles added. “I didn’t want to repress who I was. I tried to, because I felt lonely and I wanted to be friends, but it never felt right to be someone I’m not. The only polar bears who liked me were my mother, my sister, and some of the polar scouts.”
Bonnie knew all too well what that was like. That’s why they repressed themselves around so many people. They never thought the issue of being judged for being autistic would spread to the arctic amongst polar bears.
“But when I’m here, on the octopod with you all, I feel like I’m home, I AM home here.” He smiled fondly, thinking of the family he found on his journey of being the captain of the Octonauts.
“I know what it’s like.” Bonnie spoke up.
Barnacles’ ear twitched as he listened. “I mean you already know I’m autistic, When I was really little it wasn’t hard to talk to people, in fact, I loved being around people, everytime I had the chance to talk to someone knew, especially someone my age, I’d take it.”
Barnacles listened as Bonnie shared a piece of themselves with him. Bonnie had always been a quiet, vulnerable person but this brought a new light.
Bonnie ran their hands through the tub water, gently scooping up bubbles and suds. “But as we all got older, especially after I turned 10, I began to notice how different I was, I noticed that teachers had to focus a little more on me when I was upset, I just new I was different, I thought it was just ADHD.”
Bonnie put their hands back in the water and Barnacles tilted his head with concern. “After I was told I was also autistic, whether it was good for me or not, I just stopped trying. I didn’t want freinds anymore, some part of me did, but in everyone’s eyes and, honestly my own, I was too much, I just understood that no one was gonna like me.”
Bonnie stuttered a little before turning to Captain Barnacles, who looked back with pity. “And, that- that’s why I’m so quiet, people like me when I’m quiet.”
“Sorry..” Bonnie sighed.
Captain Barnacles gently took their hand, his heart ached painfully for his partner. “Thank you for telling me this, Bonnie. and you never have to worry about any of that while you’re here.”
“I know, but it’s hard to let myself believe that.” Bonnie looked down.
“It can be hard, yes.” Barnacles admitted “It’s never easy to beleive good things after years of believing you’re bad, but that’s why you need to surround yourself with people who love you.”
Bonnie looked at him again
“Don’t forget, Dear.” He tenderly kissed their head. “I adore you.”
“I love you too.” Bonnie sighed.
Barnacles grabbed the conditioner and lathered it up in Bonnie’s hair. His paws ever so gentle, as they always were. “If you’d like, maybe we can spend the rest of the day together?”
“Sounds like a plan.” Bonnie began to smile as Barnacles lathered the conditioner some more “You’re beautiful, Bonnie.”
“Oh don’t start that..” Bonnie mumbled as they looked away in embarrassment.
“I already have, darling.” He grabbed the body wash and looked at Bonnie for a moment. “May I?” He held up the loofah.
With Bonnie’s permission and their arm out, Barnacles began tenderly scrubbing their arm.
“Do you miss the arctic?” Bonnie asked as Captain Barnacles cleaned their body. The scrubbing slowed to a stop. And Barnacles glanced at Bonnie, he grew a bittersweet smile and sighed.
“Of course I do.” He gently put the loofah aside. His attention still focused on Bonnie. “There’s a lot to miss, doesn’t matter what happened back there.” He smiled.
Bonnie felt a twinge of tension hover over their shoulders. They hesitantly reached for Captain Barnacles’ paw. But with the stillness of the air practically screaming at them to not dare call his attention, they put their hand back in the water.
“Please don’t worry about it, Bonnie.” He took their another arm and tenderly scrubbed away with the loofah. Bonnie looked away with guilt. Their hand rested on their knee, fingernails barely digging in the skin. Bonnie’s unkempt fingernails and shallow breathing really stuck out now.
“Sorry..” Bonnie croaked out while avoiding eye contact. Noticing Barnacles’ vacant expression.
“Don’t be. you’re okay, dear.” He responded bluntly. The loofah against their skin moving more fervently.
“But you aren’t.”
Barnacles felt his mind shut down. He hated those words. He refused to look at Bonnie, if their words put him to a hault, what would their expression do?
“This isn’t about me, Bonnie.” He grimaced. “We can talk about that later, dear.”
Later probably wouldn’t come, Bonnie’s heart thumped in their chest, it wouldn’t be fair to leave the captain in the dark. Bonnie swallowed their pride and gently took his paw. “Captain.” Bonnie began. “Look, you don’t have to tell me anything, I can’t control your feelings, and I can’t make you talk about them.”
Barnacles mouth hung open and he tilted his head at Bonnie’s outburst. Could it be an outburst? Or was it a declaration?
“But you never have to hide how you feel. I know I’m no good at comforting people, all I can really do is listen, but I’d be happy to listen to you, about anything.” Bonnie paused and their cheeks turned red. “I really like your voice, it’s pretty.. and I love you.”
Their eyes half lidded and their smile sincere. Bonnie placed a hand on Captain Barnacles soft cheek, which was also a cute shade of pink at this point, and sighed before kissing his open lips.
Barnacles kept his hands on the tub and his feet firmly in place, but his heart was beating at a million miles an hour and his mind burnt to a crisp. Bonnie’s lips, no matter how used to them he was, always tasted like what love felt like. God, he loved them more than he could ever know or understand.
He felt Bonnie gently pull away from the sweet gesture and gazed to them with shock and adoration. “Darling..” he breathed out, he leaned forward as if he was under some sort of spell.
Bonnie smiled back at his love struck stupor. They rested their head on their arms and studied his features. His eyes hung half lidded and he smiled adoringly.
“You’re wonderful, dear. You always know how to take my breath away.” Barnacles chuckled a little at the end.
“You’re the one lending it to me, Bear.” Bonnie lay back, and Barnacles gleefully continued cleaning Bonnie, they spent the next few minutes enjoying eachothers words and laughter, Bonnie and Barnacles both feeling just as loved as before.
Once late noon came to pass, Bonnie was in the kitchen, eating the pesto kelp noodles that were requested earlier, they didn’t feel the constant itchy or the shame anymore, just then, Captain Barnacles walked in with two mugs. “Feeling better, dear?” He approached them and set one of the mugs down and sat beside them at the table.
“I am, thank you, what about you, Bear?” Bonnie took a sip of the tea on their mug, most of the Octonauts drank hot cocoa, but Bonnie hated it, as they believed drinks should be cold. So they usually had tea.
“Better.” Barnacles simply replied. “Thank you for that, by the way.” He looked at the hot cocoa in his mug “What you said meant a lot to me, but I’d appreciate some patience with my feelings, dear? I’ve never been good with that.” He asked, his expression ad kind as ever.
“I’ll be patient , just like you are with me.” Bonnie gently kissed his head.

random long rant belowww
i was in my first serious relationship for about a year and a half. we met two years ago through a mutual friend and i fell really hard. six months went by and we became a couple and it was nice and we were interested in the same things. unfortunately, both of us were very unwell mentally, but we made it work and we helped each other get better bit by bit. we were both so infatuated with each other and out of all my relationships, i had a flicker of hope that this has to be my future. we made plans, we agreed on practically everything, it was going to be easy and by golly it was just right there. i helped him put the shovel down and he started to want to live until he grew gray and old. with me.
suddenly a few months ago something seemed to click for him and he was so. much. mentally. healthier. he began to take up hobbies like guitar and writing and he even got a pet rat (who is the sweetest little thing, her name is Mochi). unfortunately, i was left in a shell of this perfect routine i made up that included him in everything i did. i was happy he felt better, but this was so different from everything we had before. he then fixated on a show that i can’t ever seem to like, and at that point we were barely talking to each other anymore because our interests were no longer aligned and he didn’t want to talk to me even when he had free time. it was a weird 180° from how we used to be and i was uncomfortable. we started arguing a lot and became more distant as things progressed. i started sensing lies and since then, could hardly trust his word about anything. he admitted that he wasn’t actually that much better and was trying to keep me away from that, hiding his worst from me, but i just couldn’t believe that, since he was happily talking to his other friends (that were apparently creeps that he wanted to shield me from, though that didn’t make me feel any better about them).
i was getting irritated and despite practically needing to speak to him every day, asked for a break. i didn’t cry as much as i thought i would. the lies were settling in and i realized that i put up with a lot more than i needed to. we broke up a little while after talking again.
i started learning to care for myself without needing to lean on him, but i was mourning the future i was supposed to have. even though i was figuring out that future wasn’t meant for me, that i truly wanted different things in life, and that he wasn’t the partner i saw him as (also an even shittier friend), i felt like my life was ruined indefinitely.
but it’s been a few weeks, maybe a month, and i’m following the path i really do think i want. i’m drawing and it makes me happy, i’m collaborating with other artists, and i’m making lots of friends because i’m not focused on only one person anymore. all of this i’m doing without him. there’s no doubt that my heart aches when i see he’s blocked me on yet another site just to keep me from talking to him in public, or when i look at older messages and see how happy we both were, but i’m able to self-regulate.
i don’t know. it’s tricky trying to navigate where your future is going when you had it all planned out, but i guess there’s still time. i mourn what i had but i also grieved happiness for much longer than i should have.
#lucent’s posts#rant#kind of vent#evil ex boyfriend#he’s blocked me on here too so if he unblocks me and sees this that’s on him

Review: Inside Out 2 (SPOILERS)
Hey all! So earlier today my mum and I went to go see the sequel to one of my absolute favorite Pixar films, Inside Out! For a spoiler-free opinion, I'll just say that we both enjoyed it -- my mum enjoyed it more than I did, perhaps partially because she didn't remember the original as well as I did going in, but even if I didn't personally like this sequel as much as the first one, it's still a worthy continuation with very good humor and some great heart.
That being said, I think it's high time for some more spoilerific analysis. So if you're as anxious to get started as I am, read on!
The Good!
+Honestly, this film went to places that an Inside Out sequel was almost meant to go, just based on the ending of the last film. That puberty joke coming back and messing things up for Riley? Yeah, that checks out. Riley struggling with her emotions through her teen years? Sure! Makes for great drama! The emotions have to come to grips with the fact that change is inevitable? A worthwhile and appropriate lesson. This film's trajectory was a good pay-off for the set-up from the last film, so it never felt like this film's story was jarring or came out of left-field. It even makes sense for Riley to be so afraid of not having any friends and being alone in high school, considering that just two years prior (as seen in the first movie), she had to deal with such a traumatic move that resulted in her entire life in Minnesota being uprooted.
+The conflict between Riley's old and new emotions really does embody a lot of insecurities that teenagers go through! The thought of discarding our more immature, childish selves in favor of looking and acting more "adult" -- the disillusionment and diminishing of self-esteem -- the embarrassment, guilt and shame attached to your mistakes -- the intense desire to be accepted and praised -- the envy and longing to be more like "cool" older students -- the crippling self-doubt and anxiety -- the distant, sarcastic, sometimes even rude or angry shell you might form around yourself to try to hide your insecurities...I truly do think a lot of people will identify with Riley's struggles. My mum actually identified with Riley more than I did in this film, and this is when the first Inside Out became one of my top favorites in large part because how much I'd identified with Riley's struggle with depression! (I think this might be because my mum was both very sporty and a huge people-pleaser while growing up, while I -- oddly enough -- was kind of immune to peer pressure and was much more interested in being accepted for who I was, rather than in actively changing myself to try to "earn" acceptance from others.) I did, however, really feel Riley's perfectionistic tendencies, as well as her anxiety. Which leads us nicely into...
+The anxiety attack sequence. That scene, quite honestly, was a highlight of the entire film. It was a perfect concept that was both written and animated so evocatively, and Joy managing to break through enough to Anxiety to slow the panicked internal frenzy that made it so that Riley's emotions (and therefore Riley herself) couldn't see a thing was so well done.
+On that note, the concept of the threads of Riley's beliefs was great from beginning to end. I love that at the start of the film, Riley has a great sense of self-worth and a strong faith in the thought that she's a good person: something that, quite honestly, we all think until we're ideally forced to confront a more nuanced view of ourselves and the world around us. I like that when Anxiety started taking over (and planted only her memories in that underwater garden space), there's a shift in Riley that makes it so that she can only be happy if A, B, and C -- this idea that happiness is somehow both transactional and something one can only find in the outside world. It feels true to the emotion of Anxiety, and -- honestly -- to many real-life people. Self-love is hard to cultivate when one sees their flaws and shortcomings clearly, and finding happiness in one's own company as oneself can be even harder. The threads were well set-up by us seeing Joy and Sadness reaffirming their friendship from the last film by bringing their joint memory down to the garden, and the evolution of the garden and in Riley coming to grips with both the good and bad aspects of herself was fantastic. The part where all of the emotions embrace Riley's new sense of self, regardless of her flaws and shortcomings, was actually the most resonant moment of the film for me personally. I didn't cry, but it did make my own Joy and Sadness metaphorically hug each other.
+I'm really glad that Anger, Disgust, and Fear got to go on the psychological journey with Joy this time. I have some critiques on how it was done, and we'll get to that, but I am still glad that they got some more focus and time to shine, after Joy and Sadness got so much time to bond in the last movie. Fear pulling out that parachute was both funny and completely in-character, and I liked Anger "sticking it to the man" by swiping that pipe to shoot himself and the others up into the air and onto the top of the walls. It also was so very, very fitting for Joy and the others to trust Sadness to go back to Headquarters -- she would be the best equipped to help since she knows the manuals best, and she's also the emotion who'd be best able to get Riley help from outside should she need it, as proved from the last film. It really showcases how much stronger the core emotions' bond has become in the almost two years since the events from the first movie, especially the one between Joy and Sadness.
+There was some really, really good humor in this movie. The highlights for me were largely in the Deep Dark Secrets Vault -- I died laughing at Lance Slashblade multiple times. (Am I the only one who thought that that hooded Secret was totes Riley's gender identity? Because I'm sorry, I still love the headcanon that Riley is non-binary. For the record, yes, after further research into a post-credits scene I didn't stick around for, I found out I was wrong, but SHHH, I'm ignoring it because it's stupid.) The scene where Joy blew up at Anger, Fear, and Disgust was also both really funny and relatable for me -- I've been in that exact position before, and you're right, Joy: it is exhausting!!
The Ehhh...
+I know I'll probably be in the minority on this, but none of the new emotions grabbed me the way the originals did. They all had funny moments, sure, but Anxiety pissed me off way more than earned sympathy from me, at least until the end. I think it was the whole "we love Riley, really! All we want to do is change her into a completely different person" thing. It's really not that I think the new emotions don't care about Riley -- it's clear they do, and obviously they all learned their lesson -- but I guess I personally just don't ascribe to the idea that love is somehow conditional. If you love someone, you should love them as they are: there shouldn't be this expectation that the person you love (even platonically, as in this case) should change themselves for your sake. I know Anxiety in some ways could parallel Joy in the first movie, but in the first film, Joy sees the depth of her mistake through her adventures with Sadness and the growth she undergoes through it. She then more than proves how much she's willing to make things right in how hard she fights to get Sadness back to Riley's Headquarters. Anxiety -- just due to the characterization established for her -- doesn't really get the chance to redeem herself through passionate, proactive action in that same way. Instead she falls apart, Joy has to come to her rescue, and then all of the emotions come together to symbolically embrace Riley and calm her down. As for the others, as I said, they all had funny moments, but I didn't really latch onto any of them the way I did for Joy, Sadness, and Disgust in the first movie. Again, I want to emphasize that I don't think any of these new emotions are bad, by a long shot -- I just personally didn't like or resonate with them as much as the original five.
+The pacing in this film wasn't always that great. The journey Joy took with Fear, Disgust, and Anger seemed a lot less focused than Joy's with Sadness, largely because Joy didn't really get as much chance to bond with all three of the others the way she did with Sadness. In the original film, all of the obstacles and side adventures Sadness, Joy, and Bing Bong had to undergo on their way back to Headquarters had emotional relevance. They weren't just there for the sake of jokes: they also strengthened the bond between the characters and laid the groundwork for plot points later. Take the trip through Imagination Land in the first film, for example -- sure, the Riley's Imaginary Boyfriend machine was funny, but it was also reused later where Joy made a whole bunch of copies and then used them to both reach Sadness and launch herself and Sadness at Headquarters. But the trip to Imagination Land here was really more a tangent accenting Anxiety's unraveling and a meta reference to the state of modern animation studios, rather than something that lay the groundwork for a more emotional, clever payoff later-on. (It also seemed like it wasted time Joy and the others really needed to get back to Headquarters, as well as revealed to Anxiety that they'd escaped when it would've been more prudent for them to keep their heads down.) The "Sarchasm" was absolutely hilarious as a concept -- I laughed so bloody hard when it cropped up...but imagine how much better it would've been if Disgust had gotten the chance to show how to defeat it by simply not responding verbally to it? Perhaps Disgust's interest in make-up could've given her the ability to show off the power of a silent, condescending "Eyebrow Arch" in defanging sarcasm, which could've materialized as a bridge over the chasm or something. That could've put more ammunition behind the idea that Anxiety is wrong that Riley's old emotions are no longer necessary, rather than just an obstacle being thrown into the characters' way on a whim of the filmmakers to pad the run-time.
+This does actually lead to that one big critique I have about the focus on Anger, Fear, and Disgust -- where was my favorite green girl's chance to shine during this journey through the mind, huh?! Anger figuratively went "f*** it" and got the group up to the top of the wall. Fear saved himself and the others from the fall with his parachute. Joy's relentless optimism carried them all down their path. Where was Disgust using her individuality and named trait to help Riley? Disgust in particular is supposed to be there to "keep Riley from getting poisoned physically or socially" -- she has all the motive in the WORLD to be irritated at Anxiety and the other new emotions, considering she's responsible for Riley ditching her two best friends and poisoning her entire moral character. I do really wish Anger had been more righteously angry about this too, but at least he got some chance to take charge and get the spotlight by himself -- Disgust, in comparison to the other two emotions accompanying Joy, just got less focus.
+I guess this leads into really my only true hang-up with the film -- not that it was bad, but just that it didn't surprise me that much. Just like in the last film, Joy is trying to push away those things that aren't so pleasant supposedly for Riley's benefit. Just like in the last film, Joy has to come to grips with an emotion changing Riley in a way she doesn't like. Just like in the last one, Joy breaks down and exposes the vulnerable emotions she's been trying to hide -- in fact, this time, she does it twice, considering she loses it with Anger, Fear, and Disgust (in a very funny scene, but still) mid-way through and then has that more hopeless bit in the third act. Imagine how much stronger this film could've been if after Joy's first breakdown, she really does give up, or even if it had played into that terrible idea Joy has that "when you grow up, you feel less joy" and that (as a result) Joy is getting weaker or even is starting to disappear...and so, in response, Anger has to take charge of the mission, because he -- as the emotion who cares deeply about "what's fair" -- is furious about how Anxiety treated them and is trying to change Riley. Then we follow Anger as the emotion with a character arc. He's got that fire needed to defend who Riley is and prove that she is that good person she believed she was, but because he's Anger, he has difficulty moderating himself or staying focused. It's Disgust that has to help rein him in and show the power of silence in defeating the Sarchasm. It's Fear who has to save them from the Brainstorm. In this scenario, it'd be Anger rashly confronting Anxiety in that pillow fort in Imagination Land...and it would've been Anger who would've suffered burn-out, after all of his determined rage seemingly leads them out into the middle of nowhere with no way back to Headquarters. He would've cried tears of frustration and despair, feeling like a failure just as Riley did at the beginning of the film, and this would've been where Joy came to the realization that shoving down those negative memories doesn't diminish their impact. Then they would've ridden that avalanche back, and Anger -- seeing the state Anxiety was in -- would've realized that rage was not the way to help and insisted Joy help her, while he and the others try to fix Riley's Sense of Self. Helping Anxiety would've then also helped Joy too, and she would've rematerialized in full, just as bright as before: because Joy doesn't have to just be emblematic of childhood, but also in seeing the light after losing one's way. Sure, this trajectory would've in its own way mirrored aspects from the first film -- but at least we wouldn't have had Joy having to break down three times in two movies, and perhaps we could've given Joy and Anger's friendship the chance to shine the way Joy and Sadness's has.
+As the tiniest of nitpicks as well, I didn't think the score was that memorable, aside from the reuse of the original Bundle of Joy theme written for the first film.
I know my second more negative section has a lot of stuff written in it, but please, don't take this to mean I disliked the film! Truly, overall, I think it's quite good. I just didn't identify with Riley's struggles as much in this film as its predecessor, and I didn't think the script was quite as tightly written with set-ups and pay-offs either. Inside Out 2 is still a very enjoyable film, and I think just about any fan of Inside Out will have a fun time like my mum and I did! Even despite my minor critiques, my memory of this film is largely yellow.
Overall Grade: B+

Was trying to figure out what makes Howard and Lalo attracted to each other respectively besides both of them being dreamboats by conventional standards. We’re all familiar with their commonalities and how they would form a connection over those but realistically speaking, no real initial attraction besides that to physical attributes means any commonalities would amount to nothing cause 1. pretty people are no doubt a dime a dozen for them and 2. there would be little to zero chemistry being generated between them, at least that’s how it is in my book. I found that since Lalo was so clearly designed and developed to be the guy most people would swoon over, its fairly easy to determine why Howard would fall for him. He’s handsome, “exotic”, charismatic, can be a gentleman when he wants to, has an air of mystery to him and basically embodies the kind of self-liberation/freedom that a person with as many constraints as Howard would aspire to have. It gets a bit trickier when it comes to figuring out Lalo’s hypothetical attraction to Howard. What would make Lalo really like Howard and wants to know more about him? This thought experiment has made me realize how ironic it is to find answering the question being raised difficult since Howard does virtually everything in his power to conform to the societal expectations on the physical appearance and the status of a man of his class and background and how he presents himself to the world. He has to be fit, he has to dress sharp, he has to style his hair a certain way, has to speak in a certain manner, has to be married to a certain type of partner, has to have a nice car, a big house, a well-paying job, a powerful position on the corporate hierarchy pyramid, etc. but I do not think Lalo would care for any of that. Hell, I think he would deem holding yourself up to such standards as ridiculous and a waste of time and energy because most of them don’t even make sense. Plus egotistic gringos in suits riding around on their high horses can be found any and every where. So what could possibly make Howard different from Lalo’s perspective? To me, Howard being a walking contradiction would make him very intriguing in Lalo’s eyes. Howard has established a set of rules for himself to follow but he breaks them when nobody is looking, or when there are few witnesses. He carries the image of a constantly positive, overly friendly, generous gentleman but in reality he’s selfish, petty and self-centered. He portrays himself as a well-rounded outgoing person with stable relationships and connections but he’s actually extremely lonely and has no real emotional support system. A part of him probably knows that some of the things he’s done weren’t within the scope of good morals but he did them anyway (and based on how willing he was to carry them out, you cant tell me he wasn’t getting some personal gratification out of breaking the rules). The last one would be especially attractive to Lalo cause he was shown to be an “action speaks the loudest” type of guy. In my own perfect little world where antisocial Lalo doesn’t entirely have a utilitarian view on love, he would be infatuated with Howard’s lame attempts to break out of his straight-laced robotic shell and the sassing and the broodiness that he isn’t afraid to display in front of him for some reason, and over time, he would start to find him to be quite… cute.
Another thing about Howard that fascinates Lalo his absolute inability to contain his attraction to Lalo. It can be partly the arrogance from knowing that a handsome guy has a thing for him that makes him feel that way, but the other part would be because Howard is so bad at hiding how much he likes Lalo. He wouldn’t downright throw himself at Lalo (at first) but he does weird juvenile things like feigning getting annoyed to get his attention because he just can’t detach himself from Lalo. Long-term crippling loneliness has make Howard that exact type of desperate, needy and kinda stupid person when he’s in love, and the whole thing makes Lalo think to himself “I don’t know what his deal is, but at the same time, I do, and somehow I’m convinced that he’s worth being patient with”, which would open up a whole road where they would walk down holding hand and sharing their most intimate secrets with one another. Basically a one falls first, the other falls harder thing.
#As you can tell. I base what I imagine Howard would be like on his relationship with Chuck and especially with Kim#I think his treating Kim poorly is quite indicative of his interest in her and him wanting to gain control over her#It’s interesting that the control thing was exhibited very strongly every time she showed support for Jimmy#and when he wanted to re-emphasize the difference and power-gap between them (mesa verde luncheon)#And him being the same way to Lalo is very plausible methinks. Cause at some point his mind had equated being a controllingPOS with love#Except Lalo isn’t someone he can control. How would that work out for him?#laloward#howard hamlin#lalo salamanca

Willow Month 2023: Day 1 - Favorite Character Surprising absolutely no one, my favorite character is Graydon Hastur, the sad-angry frown prince with a hero's heart. In the beginning, he's right up there with Elora in terms of being relatablely bewildered and flustered by having to participate in all this derring-do swords & sorcery nonsense. He didn't want any part of it and yet here he is, and he makes the best of it. He sees Elora doubt herself and tries to give her heart. He throws himself into dangerous situations despite his fear, because he wants to help. THEN we get to Nockmaar and this poor boy is wounded, chained up, sick, chained up more, get his shirt ripped open, is forced to expose his secrets and talk about his trauma, hurt, fully possessed, full-on evil, subdued, and has the evil basically kissed out of him. (As I've said before, I can't be normal about any of that, and I refuse to try.) After that his journey of emotional self-discovery really kicks in. When they arrive at the Shattered Sea, he realizes the Gales are there, knocks one of them out, gets everyone on the sleigh, drives the sleigh off himself, and then comes into his magic power and kills one of them. My boy is breaking out of his shell, communing with animals, learning to harness his powers, owning his feelings, and jumping off the edge of the world to protect his love and fight for good, before making the ultimate heroic sacrifice. And who knows what another season would bring? I, for one, would love to see it. I have a feeling he'd be pretty entertaining as the bad guy. Now, I would have enjoyed this character regardless, but Tony's acting put it completely over the top for me. He has a facility with nuance of facial expression, body language and voice that adds so much to line reads or even just background action, and the range of emotion that gets covered in episode 4 alone is just amazeballs. He has the range, and I'm so happy I got to see him put it to work in this show.

nicovid works well platonically but i really like it romantically. taking someone who’s desperate to survive (nico) and pairing them with someone who views his own life as worthless (david) is already an interesting dynamic, but when its paired up with their actual personalities it just adds a layer of bittersweetness to it. nico, someone who’s been tormented their entire life, and david, who’s basked in the attention of everyone around him for years. nico, who was bullied for being themselves, and david, who was praised for being someone else. nico, who’s shy, david, who’s outgoing at first but slowly devolves into someone cynical. i do like their dynamic pre-freakout, its very cute and could lead to nico breaking out of their shell, i find their post-freakout dynamic much more interesting. nico and david both have a common denominator: they did something bad and will most likely be ostracized because of it. seeing as they both know how it feels to be set aside as the odd one out (nico through their bullying, david through never feeling as if his true feelings are enough for others) and they both have similar character relationships. (disdain towards ace, fallen-through friendship with hu). i feel like given david’s clear self-esteem issues, nico’s blunt manner of speech won’t be seen as insulting by david, and that lets them learn how to speak their mind. i see their dynamic as someone who wraps himself in a lie, and one of the only people that can see through him. even during the trial, nico’s one of the three people out of the cast of 13 students attending the second trial that notices david’s bullshitting about killing arei, alongside the protag and the support. idk if this is plot armoring my favs or whatever but i do think that nico can read people well, similarly to the animals they work with (considering their occupation: pet *therapy*) and david’s tendency to lie might not really fool them. they can both depend on each other when they need to, but they also do have their own problems and stuff. their development in canon chapter 3 could be interesting if they do end up talking to each other, especially if nico does end up becoming a chapter three victim. another thing that really intrigues me about them is how they’ve both committed an irredeemable action. david’s trying to get them all killed by pretending to have killed arei after all, and nico tried to kill ace. they’re both one of the “bad people” of the second chapter, and i can heavily emphasize (empathy =/= sympathy by the way.) despite their contrasting personalities and themes. it emphasizes how anyone is capable of doing bad, even someone seemingly kind and timid or someone seemingly well-intentioned. nico really has no room to speak on david’s shortcomings and vice versa, and i doubt that either of them want to. they provide each other with a safe space that neither of them really deserve, but it’s still comfortable to have and they enjoy it. david, although his nihilistic tendencies are on display, probably still can’t help but accommodate for nico if they ever started dating or going out. maybe not immediately after— he’d probably still be cruel, but nico wouldn’t really mind. they both let each other say what they’re thinking freely, without caring much for their words, but one thing leads to another and they cant help but fall in love. they both accommodate for each other. nico tries to help david with his honesty and his feelings, because they can’t control their own feelings OR how honest they are (even if its insulting,) and david takes care of nico when they can’t take care of themselves. gaah i lovw them.
this sounds insane? thats because it is. i dint know what the fuck im takjing about but they make me happy and sad. their entire dynamic can be described as one thing: bittersweet

Hello! I wrote a Käärijä fanfic.
Content warning for self-doubt, swearing and sad thoughts that can ruin your memories of Kaivohuone gig. Don't like = don't read!
-
One last time
Summary: Käärijä misses the way his gigs looked before he became famous and after a bunch of sad thoughts decides to perform Cha Cha Cha in the crowd at Kaivohuone.
First person POV, 713 words, choppy style. Very sad! Proceed only if you like sad writing!!! Mostly inner monologue but there is some plot there too, I swear!
-
Shivers.
This crowd goes crazy. Excitement, joy, satisfaction, all these kinds of feelings pouring out of them. And rightfully so - this was one of the best gigs this summer, if not the best one.
The crew did a fantastic job. The vibe landed just right. The audience, welcoming and magnifying everything they received, giving it back to further power up the performance.
Both sides of the barrier resonating until it all started vibrating, shaking, quaking, inevitably leading to a disaster.
Break it down and be free.
The fans are having the time of their lives. They got everything they wished for and more. Surely they will remember this night forever. Sweat, spit, tears, screams. Photos, livestreams, gifts, memories. The whole club is completely filled with cheering and ecstatic shouts. And yet, even in this tightly packed atmosphere of celebration and fulfillment, something is jarringly missing.
Weirdly enough, it used to feel so much more complete and satisfying before this craze started. Back when there was only the front row at the gigs. Back when it was still possible to jump into the crowd and go wild, constantly in direct contact with the audience, almost tangibly feeling the energy flowing into the people and returning back in a feast of show and applause, performance and appreciation.
This was the norm before. Then this whole circus started, filling every waking second with duties, forcing the awareness to lag a few months behind. Only now it becomes obvious that this is all long gone. Now there is only security and bodyguards and barricades and limits.
The feel of longing to bring this back invites a thought to come to the surface. An oddly familiar thought, whose shadow for weeks has accompanied my every attempt at guessing the exact distance between the fence and the stage, but never bold enough to make me actually think it.
This will only get worse. I can no longer deny it. And the thought soon spawns another one: this will never come back.
I did not expect that in order to live my dream and conquer the biggest stages I will have to sacrifice what now might turn out to be my very soul. So damn cruel and wrong that I cannot have both. It's either sold-out venues filled with crowd partying like they never had before, or the ability to experience it alongside them. Impossible to decide, and once I choose one of them, the other is gone. This is bullshit.
Stop. Wait.
Who said I cannot have both?
There is one song left for tonight. Last chance to try and combine the best sides of my current and past life. Right here, right now. Let's do it as it's supposed to be done.
Insane.
Is it selfish? Is it the alcohol? Is it safe? Isn't it my own show after all, damn it?!
I'm doing it. Into the crowd, further, hotter, right in the middle. This is where everything will be fixed. This is where I return to life.
Not even Jesse's frightened face can stop me now. Shit, I hope nothing happens to me. If I die here, he will kill me.
And everything he and the whole crew will tell me afterwards will be absolutely true. This is ridiculous, risky, stupid, outrageous, and I know, and I agree! They will never allow it to happen again, and I will never try to do it again.
Fuck, this really is my last chance. This will never return. Just this one gig and I will have to part with my soul. Only the outer shell will continue into the future, selling music as a product, making money, never feeling complete again.
And if this thing right now doesn't work out, I won't even have anything to remember. Forced to live in the spotlight, smiling and accepting compliments, praised as successfull and fulfilled despite never really reaching the dream.
Is it so?
No, stop, wait, come on!
Stop.
What am I doing? Mourning things that did not happen?
Not a chance. Fuck it, we ball.
The audience is ready to have their minds blown. This is already the best gig of their whole lives.
I can make this the best gig of my own life as well.
Let's go.

Hey lys. How do i accept myself? How do i let go of the hurt from the past and the guilt?
I hope you're doing great! Take care 💕
Hi Anon, I'm doing okay and I hope you can too :)
Healing is a long path, so first of all allow yourself time. Do not rush things, do not overwork yourself even in healing but give yourself time to breathe and do something you enjoy, something not inherently related with healing. Be patient and kind, as you'll probably have fallbacks (even harsh ones at times) and doubts if you're doing the right thing. That's all normal, that's the process. So try to stay focused on your practice or, even better, seek for help to professionals: I'm not one of them so I can only talk from my experience and what I have been trying to learn, but professional figures do study upon these things and they can help you more accurately and also specifically for your situation.
Back to what I was saying about taking breaks... you can also take advantage of these periods to know yourself better: sometimes when we do not accept ourself, it's due to the fact that we look at ourself through the eye of someone else, someone who couldn't make us notice all the beautiful traits we possess but only made us focus on the little "flaws" (we're human, we cannot be perfect according to the definition of perfection of anyone -yeah, a standard "perfect" does not exist, no matter what society wants you to think. Look for example at models online and you see how much the so called "beauty standards" have changed in the last 50 years).
Now the thing is: what you cannot accept of yourself? And why? If it doesn't hurt you too much, you can try and analyze these questions. Generally, accepting yourself is about forgiving yourself, first and foremost. You don't have to be someone you're not, you're already perfect and even a mistake cannot change this. Then, realize that behind all the "bad" you are focusing on now, there's lot of good and try to see it and focus on it too. Balancing your bad traits (what you perceive or were taught are such) with the more positive ones also through affirmations (but to start this: what do you consider positive and what negative? It's important that you try and work from your own set of values imo or refer to the ones of someone you can trust to start with). Remind yourself your worth is there and you don't have to compare with anyone to have it estimated; your worth doesn't depend on anyone else nor a few failures or imperfections can mine it. Accepting yourself means you accept yourself even when you're wrong cause you know you cannot be perfect all the times and mistakes are about learning and growing, and even bettering yourself if you really think you need (just for you, not for others). Meditation can help you too, but even more trying to find your strong points, realizing you cannot control everything or please everyone around you (and let yourself down doing this), being proud of all the nice and good things you have done and traits you possess, be more positive (not saying to avoid seeing the negative, but again, balance more) and kind with yourself (once again, forgive yourself more about mistakes), and surround yourself with people that you feel can really help you see the real you or help you let it out. People you feel safer with and start to be you without fearing being judged or them not liking you: the more you get out of the shell, the more you'll be able to be seen by people that are good for you. Not everyone will like you, and that's okay: you don't have to adapt to them to be liked at all costs. You are worthy of acceptance even if someone is not for you (we're not for everyone as everyone is not for us).
About hurt and guilt, it's basically the same story. And it's all related with your self acceptance too. What are they caused by? What hurts and what are you feeling guilty of? Again, accepting that what we're talking about is a past-related situation and that you cannot change what has been, can be a good start. To keep staying connected with a situation that is closed (you're the only one keeping it alive in your mind, probably trying to search for unconscious confirmations of your "unworthiness" in the way minds usually like to do), to keep overthinking the reasons and all, is not good. It won't change anything of that, it will only hurt you on and on and make you see yourself everyday worse. Try to not neglect these feelings you have but work through them together with yourself too (and with others as well, if you need). Try to be a little less judgemental about yourself, your choices, your words, your decisions... you did them for a reason (even if you were taught you are not worthy and were harshly judged for anything "bad" you did, it's not so. Forgive yourself: if you made a decision you regret or deem as wrong or made a mistake, it's cause you didn't know something, very likely).
We all do something wrong in life, but we don't have to keep having our inner critic reminding ourself of how unworthy we are because of them. Cause we're not. And we can slowly unlearn this by being kinder with ourselves, by giving ourselves more support and acceptance (something we didn't get when we needed the most). Our worth, our abilities, do not depend solely on one single (or a bunch of) fact or a (few) mistake or a (some) failing point, something that didn't go as we wanted or mean to. The more we do and live, the more possibilities of failing and making mistakes we create. That's okay. To not make mistakes or not fail, we just have to not do anything: but that's not what we're here for (despite what our minds want us to do by keeping us in this cycle of hurt, guilt and harsh self judgement and telling us how "unable to do" we are, as your mind seems to do too). We're much more than that, so refocus on who you really are and all your other successes (be objective: you have them. Even getting out of bed on a tough day is a success). Take your time and space to get over the situation (to grieve what has been), to really be more compassionate with yourself cause it wasn't and it still is not easy to go through it all. Do not dismiss your feelings, ever.
I wrote this post about guilt, so maybe you can find more insights here too.
Hope this very long post somehow gives you some hints on how to start working on getting out of that cycle. All the best, here I am if you need. Take care :)

Hey there!! I just found your account and was absolutely in AWE after reading your HP works. Instant follow from me :]
This is my first time requesting something anywhere lol so I hope this is right. Could I request a HP matchup? [platonic and romantic, both eras or whichever one calls to you lmao] I know you are on a hiatus and that your inbox will probably be overflowing when you start writing again lol so please don't feel like u need to get to this ASAP. Whenever you have inspiration, no rush ;]
-I'm in Slytherin
-I am an INFJ-T
-I am an October Scorpio
-My patronus is a Little Owl.
-My love language [giving] is words of affirmation and quality time. My love language [receiving] is physical touch [it's hard for me to initiate it] and quality time.
-I am 5'7 with medium length blonde hair with curtain bangs and blue eyes. I have dimples and freckles.
-I am very ambitious and want to be the best at everything I do [choir, theatre, my classwork, everything]. I hold myself to very high standards and think very highly of myself. This pride also leads me to talk about myself a lot, which is often taken as bragging. While all of this is true, I want everyone to have equal opportunity as well. If someone if struggling with something, even if they are competition, I am more than willing to help. This high-standard also causes me to feel like I am not enough or not worthy. My grade drops to an A-? I start doubting everything.
-I hate loud & crowded spaces [such as loud concerts, parties, super busy stores, etc]. They make me super overwhelmed and anxious. I would much rather stay at home playing video games with friends or go to smaller, more intimate places.
-Some of my favorite things [in no particular order] include Big Brother [reality competition show], Minecraft, SDV, Legally Blonde, Mean Girls, musical theatre, show choir, writing, my friends, being a leader/mentor, music, the beach, crocheting, reading, collecting, winning, etc
-Some of my least favorite things [in no particular order] include studying [which I never do anyway lol], sudden & unexpected loud noises, storms/bad weather, selfish and self-righteous people, fake people, the main character archetype, most movies [i have a bad attention span], losing, being wrong, etc
Hope this isn't too much!! Thanks again, love ur stuff <3
HI! I am so glad that you like them! Harry Potter is one of my favorite fandoms to write for, so many fun characters! I hope you like your matchups, I did both platonic and romantic. :) <333
---
Harry Potter;
---
(Platonic);
Luna Lovegood:
🔮 You met Luna and became good friends with her on the train to Hogwarts - she was reading - you were reading - and from that, you both began to talk about the books and subjects that you were interested in; from then on, you and Luna were pretty close
🔮 You and Luna spend a lot of time together when you can - sitting together during shared classes, walking the schools grounds, writing to each each during breaks, and you even taught her how to crochet once
🔮 Soon enough, you would travel to each other's homes during the summer, having sleepovers, and so on - you introduced Luna to some of your favorite Muggle things, like Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, and some of your favorite theater musicals; she, in turn, she told you about Thestrals, and other creatures
🔮 Along with going to each other's homes during the summer, you and Luna often visited the beach together - building sandcastles, swimming in the sea, reading, and sunbathing - as the sun sets, you and Luna walked around the beach trying to collect as many shells and pretty rocks that you could find
🔮 You and Luna's friendship is pretty well matched, you're both helpful and easygoing; Luna would give you good - yet strange - advice, and would always be there for you when you need someone after a small grade drop
---
(Romantic);
George Weasley:
🃏 When you met George, you had been learning how to bring out your patronus - way before Dumbledore's Army - you had read up on it in the library (along with hearing about it in many classes) you took as many chances as you could during free periods to master the charm; you were yearning to get it right, practicing when you could
🃏 George happened - surprisingly without his older twin - been wandering around the courtyard, near the clock tower, when he saw you, practicing; and then he saw it, your patronus, an owl (it was a Little Owl)
🃏 George went on over to you, complimented how obviously talented you were, and from then on, you and George spent a lot of time together; even though you were a Slytherin and he was a Gryffindor; you both ignored the prejudice
🃏 The friendship between the two of you quickly blossomed into a relationship; the both of you having more in common than you thought - you both liked reading, both liked music, and having nice quiet places to just exist in
🃏 When George and Fred in their adventures of creating their own jokes shop, you follow, staying with the two young men, working alongside them - though you worked mainly in the back away from the loud crowds of children; and when you and George weren't working, you'd spend time together, feeling completely relaxed in each other's company
