Chevrolet 409 Turbo-Fire V8

This is a Chevrolet 409 Turbo-Fire V8, a legendary engine from the early 1960s. It was introduced in 1961 as part of the Chevy W-series big-block engines and quickly gained fame in muscle cars and drag racing. The 409 cubic-inch (6.7L) displacement and high-performance 425 HP version made it one of the most powerful engines of its time.

Featuring dual four-barrel carburetors and chrome valve covers, this engine was a favorite in cars like the Chevrolet Impala SS, Bel Air, and Biscayne. The 409 became an icon, immortalized in the Beach Boys' song "409", symbolizing the early days of the American muscle car era.v

wada sez: Crosshairs’ bio by Bob Budiansky notes that he “won’t take a shot unless he’s sure he can’t miss”, with his motto being “don’t shoot until you see the wires in their eyes”, so this is a strip about Crosshairs waiting for the perfect shot. In light of Prowl’s typical characterisation, it’s odd to see him siding against Crosshairs’ utilitarian outlook here, though Pirrie tried to justify it on deviantART by saying: “Logic doesn't apply to gut feelings. Crosshairs was going with his gut, but Prowl's logic dictates that the same shot could have been made before the squad was wiped out.” Anyway, as we’d hope from Ed Pirrie, this strip is chock full of obscure European characters and Generation 2 nobodies; he noted that “I put Lightspeed in there because he was staring at me from the shelf at the time.” Naturally, he sees the character as Lightspeed, as he was known in Europe, rather than Braver, as he was originally called in Japan. Ga’am grabbed Jadus and heaved him over the ledge, sending the Inquisitor tumbling. Just as one of the Republic fighters made another straft, raining turbofire around them. The Juggernaut lifted his hand, barely deflecting the emerald bolts with a Force Shield. His teeth rattled under his respirator from the sheer force, not risking to glance back with the second fighter coming in to support. He trusted Jadus enough and that trust was rewarded. 

By a snarl of the Dark Side, the first fighter’s engines screamed as invisible hands brutally clapped it like a fly, making its wings collapse around themselves and the pilot almost crushed inside. Snatched in midair, Jadus hurled it in the direction of the second. Too late to evade, sending the two into an ear-tearing fireball over their heads. 

“Force, these Republic dogs are relentless.” Jadus grumbled as he rolled his shoulders, turning to see the departure of a transport. He already knew a new wave of the Republic incursion was setting in. 

“My Lord,’ Quinn radioed to Ga’am as he strode towards and looked to see droppods piercing the sky. ‘The enemy is mobilizing. The Southern Sector is under assault by a infantry line, we are holding them back but-”

“I see them. Get those damned guns up, we will handle what slips in.” Ga’am commanded, catching a droppod and twisted it into a screaming ruin by one motion of his armoured hand. Jadus caught his own parts, the strain of their inertia against his will was warning a snarl but he redirected their fall to a tumbling crash on their sides, smashing the concrete underneath. 

More pods made their landing, opening out to release battle droids. 

Jadus whipped around and unleashed bolts of lashing power, slamming and destroying what it's arcs may touch before drawing his lightsaber. One blade flaring alive to deflect what his energy shield did not. Ga'am was already moving, crushing a droid in the Force and hurled it into a chest-wide projectile as he lunged into a squad with a telekinetic explosion.

New for G2!

Know what I haven't done in a hot minute? A Patreon-backed @tfwiki pic thread about toys from before the turn of the century! Ha haa god I'm old.

Anyway, let's look at some of the new toys made for GENERATION 2, easily one of my all-time favorite eras of TF. I was the exact target demographic for the original TF line, but it was just one of many toylines I liked. I never had a lot. But G2 came when I started having disposable income, and at the dawning of internet fandom, and the innovations it made turned me into a TF FAN and long-time collector.

And before we start, everyone give thanks to Takara designer Takio Ejima (江島 多規男). He designed SO MANY TFs from this era to today, and is responsible for creating the light-piping and balljoint articulation that first appeared in these years.

The "Autobot Cars" became instant favorites (especially Rapido). The European releases were called AXELERATORS (a far cooler name) and had gorgeous hot-pink translucent parts instead of the US versions' smoky black. (Skram, Windbreaker, Rapido (old pic), Turbofire (old pic))

Of course, the "Decepticon Jet" counterparts, aka SKYSCORCHERS, were also adored. Weapons stored in vehicle mode were still rare, and thankfully the US versions kept that lovely bright-green translucent plastic. (Windrazor, Terradive, Afterburner (old pic), Eagle Eye (old pic))

The LASER RODS didn't just have light-up parts, they were the first super-articulated TFs! They used the G.I.Joe O-ring and steel hips construction, which was very awkward and made standing them tricky. (Electro, Volt, Sizzle, Jolt)

Following up are the LASER CYCLES, which use the Cyberjet ball-joint tech for much more stable advanced articulation. Road Pig and Road Rocket (old pic) also keep their lights permanently plugged into their weapons, where the Rods had you move the light from engine to hand.

On the other end of the articulation are the GO-BOTS, small and simple toys designed to work with Matchbox/Hot Wheels-scale playsets. Gearhead here was first released with clear parts, then again in the second wave with opaques… the first of many, MANY redecoes for this lot.

(No really, the six Go-Bots were released in like TEN different decos each all told over the course of eight years. It's amazing the steel molds weren't cheese by the end of it.)

The last toys released in G2 (in the US at least), the AUTO-ROLLERS (Dirtbag & Roadblock) are absolute units. Their back/lower halves have involved gearing that, when you flip a switch, makes them auto-transform to robot when rolled forward, or to vehicle when rolled back.

There's loads more delightful toys in this line, but I've already done pics of most of them, like the water-shooters (sadly my US versions are pretty rough), Rotor Force, Heroes, and the Australia/New Zealand exclusive Power Masters. Try 'em, you'll like 'em.

ok so lemme get my (recent) herstory straight here:

2016: Helmut decides he doesn't like the cut of Daniil Kvyat's jib but he IS in love with a baby dutchman, so yeets Daniil down to Toro Rosso after a measley 4 races. This move is widely attributed to the fact that Max was going to escape RBR's clutches if they didn't promote him ASAP and, well, Kvyat was not doing well on travk or in the press at the time.

2017: In what they no doubt thought was a VERY generous move, Scuderia Toro Rosso waits 14 races before yeeting Daniil out of the formula entirely, in favor of a cherubic Pierre Gasly. But...

2017: Renault was hanging out with the wrong crowd (the RBR racing family) and picking up some bad habits - they uncerimoniously dumped noted street circuit enthusiast Jolyon Palmer after 16 races, laying the true Commentator's Curse upon him (cursed to be a commentator rather than race). Then-Toro Rosso-driver Carlos Sainz Jr. thought to himself "you know what I better yeet before Helmut gets another itch to fire someone midseason" and changes into black and yellow overalls, leaving a hole at Toro Rosso that could be filled by only one man - Daniil Kvyat!

2017, Still: Well, filled for only one race that is - Daniil raced with Sainz's replacement Brendon Hartley (put some respect on his name) in the US GP because Pierre had to go finish the Super Formula season in Japan that weekend. After one race, Daniil was once again kicked to the curb like last week's lunch. At least when they eventually came crawling back to him, he got two full seasons of racing in!

2019: In what can only be called true twin flame RBR punching bag kismet, Pierre is booted down from the highest highs of the big kid team to AlphaTauri (was it always supposed to be one word? wth) during the summer break, 12 races in. I highly recommend going to look up the AT content with these two, there's something special about their dynamic. Alex Albon, babygirl coded, is promoted to replace Pierre as a fucking test of his mettle!! Scary shit. At least he eventually got turbofired between seasons and not during...

2023: After Pierre gets tired of pootling about in a mid to shit car and slides down the classic Toro Rosso/AlphaTauri to Renault/Alpine pipeline, Nyck De Vries drove what has now become a true shitbox on wheels for exactly 10 races before ol Masochism Ricciardo got called up from the bench, a move which in retrospect seems like it may as well have been fucking scripted. I'm sorry Nyck, PLEASE go get an endurance or sports car seat, lad 🙏

This emulator I was using on my phone has this neat "turbofire" feature where you can make (particularly the L/R) buttons rapidfire by holding it, but what I felt I needed more was the option to toggle certain buttons. A toggleable R would have made Metroid fusion way more playable without actual/physical shoulder buttons, for example

Today was mentally a hard day. I think I may be pmsing because I have been utterly exhausted and crabby and really want to be left alone lol.

So I took a few hours off of work, we snuggled in to watch a movie and I took myself a nice nap because that’s really all you can do sometimes.

After that did another TurboFire workout which was great to follow up yesterday’s. In all of the workouts I do now, I’m thinking about how it will make me a better pickleball player. It makes it easier to work hard and focus on each movement’s purpose.

For food, I made a big lasagna with ground turkey and filled with veggies that will work for healthy meals for the week. I was slightly over my calorie goal but I actually made healthy choices overall so I’m happy about that.

Glad tomorrow is Thursday!

Post-workout selfie and getting in my post-workout chocolate mint cookie #phormula1. Great outdoor workout, and even got sprinkled on. Today’s outdoor workout was @beachbody #turbofire and then a cool down walk to finish my 45 minute workout. Today is an awesome day of checking off all my to-do boxes on both my power list and #75hard (once I finish my water intake). I realized that when I was trying to do this before, I was setting myself up to fail because I kept too much chaos around me. So before starting this round I worked really hard to clear out as much of that chaos from my environment as possible and I can already tell a difference with just the amount of general anxiety I feel.
