The first whisper reaches James during breakfast. It’s soft, a giggle behind a hand, the flicker of an eye in his direction. By the time he’s walking out of the Great Hall, it’s a full-blown blaze.

"James Potter and Regulus Black," someone stage-whispers as he passes, the words singed with scandal.

Sirius practically slams into him, a manic grin stretching across his face. "Well, well, well. Look who’s suddenly the talk of the castle. You’ve got some explaining to do, Prongs."

James furrows his brows. "What are you—"

"Mate, you and my brother?" Sirius throws an arm over James' shoulder. "I mean, I always knew you had questionable taste, but Regulus?"

It takes a second to process. Then another. Then James groans, rubbing a hand over his face. "What the hell happened?"

Sirius gestures vaguely to the Slytherin table, where Regulus sits, composed as ever, ignoring the storm around him. A few seats down, Barty Crouch Jr. is smirking like he set fire to the rumor himself. Which, knowing him, isn’t unlikely.

"Word on the street is," Sirius says, delighting in James’ suffering, "you and my dear little brother have been meeting in secret—oh, how salacious—and, depending on who you ask, either passionately snogging or engaged in some forbidden rivalry-fueled romance."

James rolls his eyes. "Great. Just what I needed."

"Come on, Prongs, it’s hilarious."

"Not when it's Regulus."

And that’s the problem, isn’t it? Because Regulus is untouchable. Ice-cold, razor-sharp, more myth than boy. If people believe he’s tangled up with James—James, Gryffindor darling, golden-hearted disaster—well, that’s bound to rattle more than just a few feathers.

The day spirals from there. Lily asks about it at lunch, Remus raises an eyebrow but says nothing, and Peter keeps shooting him looks like is it true?.

By the time James corners Regulus in the library, the embers have turned into an inferno.

"You heard, then," Regulus says without looking up from his book.

"Heard? I’m living it," James mutters, dropping into the chair across from him. "Tell me you didn’t start it."

Regulus finally looks up, and James hates how the candlelight makes his grey eyes softer, almost warm. "Of course I didn’t start it," Regulus scoffs, but his lips quirk, betraying amusement.

"Then who did?"

Regulus closes his book with a measured slowness, turning his head just slightly—just enough for James to follow his gaze across the room, where Barty Crouch Jr. is watching them, sharp and knowing.

James exhales. "Of course."

Barty has that glint in his eye, the kind that says I know things you don’t. The kind that reminds James that whatever history lies between Barty and Regulus is tangled, dark, and filled with ghosts.

"Why would he—" James starts.

Regulus stands, cutting him off. "Because he likes to watch things burn." He leans in slightly, voice quieter now. "And because it used to be him."

James stills.

Regulus doesn’t elaborate, but he doesn’t need to. The implication lingers between them, heavy with something James doesn’t know how to name.

Barty watches them like a spectator in an old war, lips curved in something that isn’t quite a smirk.

James is still trying to decide how he feels about that when Regulus tilts his head and says, "If the whole school believes it already, we might as well make it worth their while."

James blinks. "Excuse me?"

Regulus shrugs, effortlessly composed. "Unless you enjoy being chased by a wildfire you can’t control. I, for one, prefer to direct the flames."

James shouldn’t. He really shouldn’t.

But Regulus is standing there, daring him. And James Potter has never been one to back down from a dare.

So he smirks, leans in just close enough for the whole library to see, and says, "Fine. Let’s give them something to talk about."

Y/n had pulled him aside, evidently uncomfortable.

“What’s wrong?” James came over too.

“She doesn’t feel like playing,” Remus explained.

“Ngaw, baby… It’s just a game. Plus, no one will judge.”

Remus nodded in agreement.

Y/n didn’t wanna upset them by pushing her refusal further. 

She sat down back where the others were, leaning on a semi-concerned Sirius.

“You okay?” He had asked.

“Mm.”

The laughs of Lily, Barty and the others rang through the room.

“Okay, okay. My turn,” Marlene said. “Never have I ever drunk called or texted someone in this room”

Barty, Sirius and even Regulus took a sip from their champagne filled glasses.

Y/n closed her eyes, she had never been drinking and only occasionally had alcohol at parties. It made her head all fuzzy sometimes, triggering the switching mechanism her brain had would be a hassle for her boyfriends in the end.

The following questions were irrelevant too. Y/n kept her eyes closed, not wanting to know who had made out with who before.

“I’m not being a kill-joy r-right?” she asked Sirius at some point.

He shook his head subtly and whispered a gentle “no” in her ear.

“Never have I ever wanted a dog growing up,” Said Sirius on his turn.

“Y/n turned to look at him. He was a little drunk, yes… but that one was entirely off topic.

She slowly took a sip from her still full cup and smiled when her boyfriend pranced around as a black dog, letting everyone who took a sip pat him on the head before returning to sit back next to her.

Y/n passed her turn, not having a topic in mind. She was starting to just enjoy the company at this point, relishing the joy in the room.

“Love, we’re gonna play truth or dare. Is that okay with you?” Sirius whispered.

She didn’t respond, fast asleep as she leaned on Sirius for support.

“Maybe it’s bedtime for the bunny, hm?” Remus smiled at the sight.

James looked at the time…

“I think it’s bedtime for us all.”

Remus wasn’t entirely sure how it had happened, but somehow, they’d all ended up sitting on the worn, sagging couch in Sirius’s flat, a questionable horror movie blaring from the TV. 

James was halfway through explaining his newest strategy for the next international Quidditch match to Lily (who, to her credit, looked like she was trying to care).

On the other end of the couch, Regulus was squished between Barty and Evan, who were bickering over whether or not cheap Slasher-esque movies were an acceptable form of cinema.

“They’re all just mindless gore,” Evan argued, leaning over Regulus, who looked like he regretted his life choices. “There’s no substance, no actual plot.”

“There’s a plot! You’re just not cultured enough to understand the subtle nuances,” Barty shot back.

Remus raised an eyebrow. “Subtle nuances? Of what? A masked guy running around with a chainsaw?”

“Exactly,” Barty said.

“Right. Because nothing screams ‘nuance’ like blood splatters and screaming teenagers.”

“You just don’t get it, Moony,” Sirius chimed in, smirking. “The horror genre is a refined art form, perfectly balancing suspense, tension, and, of course, a healthy dose of irrational decision-making.”

Remus gave him a deadpan look. “Right. Because when I think of the word ‘refined,’ I definitely think of chainsaws and hockey masks.”

Sirius grinned. “I knew you’d see it my way.”

“Really?” Regulus muttered a beat later, glaring at the screen. “Of all the directions she could’ve gone, she chooses to run toward the guy with a chainsaw?”

“Darwinism at its finest,” Remus said dryly.

“Just once,” James piped up, “I’d like to see someone in one of these movies actually do something smart. You know, like, not investigate the creepy noise in the basement?”

Lily nodded. “Or, you know, call the police? Why is that never an option?”

“Because,” the dog animagus said, “where’s the fun in that? It’s more entertaining to watch them make terrible decisions.”

Remus rolled his eyes. “You would think that.”

The movie continued to spiral into absurdity, with the remaining characters making one terrible decision after another. 

Evan, at some point, had fallen asleep on Regulus’s shoulder, and Barty looked about three seconds away from jumping into the screen to show the villain how to kill people properly.

And then the power went out.

The TV screen went dark, and the room was plunged into pitch blackness. Remus felt Sirius tense beside him.

“Oh, great,” James said. “I can’t wait for the part where we all die horribly in our own horror film. I’d, uh, get jumped and forget my wand somewhere- the couch, maybe- speaking of, where are our wands? And, um, Sirius would fall out of an open window because he ran into it and the curtains were down, and, er, Regulus, you’d drown, because you still can’t swim-”

“Potter, shut up,” Regulus grumbled. “No one’s dying.”

“Not yet,” Barty added helpfully.

“Can you not?”

Sirius shifted beside Remus, and even in the dark, Remus could practically hear the wheels turning in his head. 

“Y’know, Moons, this is exactly how those movies start.”

“You are not the final person, Sirius. Don’t even try.”

Sirius gasped dramatically. “How dare you!”

Lily snorted. “Sirius, no offense, but you’d be the first one dead.”

“Excuse me? I’d like to think I have at least enough survival skills to outlast James.”

“True, true. He’d be the first one dead.”

“Oi! I have excellent survival instincts, Lils!”

“Like the time you tried to sneak into Snape’s room and ended up falling into a pit of garbage?” Remus asked innocently.

“That was one time!”

“And the time you set the kitchen on fire while boiling water?”

James crossed his arms, pouting. “I’ve improved since then.”

Lily patted his shoulder. “Sure you have, dear.”

The lights flickered back on, revealing Peter holding a whole lot of wands. 

“Why’d you guys all leave your wands in the kitchen? Idiots. Oh, and Remus, how you you use the spinny-wavey thingy?”

Hello and who'd have thought we'd be here?

Third fic! I made it! (I'll only post the fourth on here once it's finished so I'm not a tease)

This one may be my biggest disappointment? Very conflicting feelings. it's the longest fic I ever wrote, while also being the first one I posted while writing it, which I generally don't enjoy doing.

I had such high hopes for this one bc I really liked my concept, but adhd bested me again, and I lost all interest near the end, meaning i rushed it. I'm still upset at myself for that one, bc it could've been great, but isn't. Anyway, it's fine. I've dealt with it (I haven't)

So, yeah... Catch you in the rye!

since you said you're not well-versed in the fandom at all, i'm over-explaining to be on the safe side, sorry if you already knew all of this 🙏

"the valkyries" is a group name in the same way as the marauders (james, sirius, remus, peter) and the slytherin skittles (barty, evan, regulus, dorcas, pandora) are

unlike the marauders (who are named explicitly in the hp books through the marauders map), the skittles and the valkyries are fandom names for the different friendgroups at hogwarts

(nb, the skittles are sometimes called the emeralds by people who think that name is too silly lmao, and pandora is traditionally thought of as ravenclaw, despite the name being slytherin-centred)

these friendgroups, of course, often over-lap in fan interpretations as we love to have them all as one vast giant family

in OG fanon lore, the valkyries consist of the three gryffindor girls: lily evans, marlene mckinnon and mary macdonald

lily we know a "lot" about from the books; she is studious, fiery, kind/nurturing, stands up for what is right and loves her friends fiercly

mary is only named as a member of the order who did not die and is mentioned by lily in a flashback where she says mary was a victim of a muggleborn hatecrime

thus we as a fandom have concluded that she is muggleborn and kind. from there, interpretations of her vary, but i characterise her as sassy, down to earth, a bit flirtatious yet shy, kind of cottagecore-y

when we talk about the marauders era in a canon compliant way, most people believe that mary survived the first wizarding war and obliviated herself of any knowledge of magic afterwards because she couldn't live with the trauma. she went on to live the rest as a "muggle"

marlene is mentioned only once in the books and is said to have been a member of the order who was killed alongside her entire family

she is generally characterised by the fandom as being incredibly loyal and family-centric (blood and found family), outspoken/brazen, confident, passionate and kind

most people hc her as an avid quidditch fanatic (wants to be a professional player when she grows up, becomes either that or a healer)

these three shared a dorm at hogwarts and made up the foundation of the friendship between the marauders era girls

(either peter or remus is often hc-ed as being brought in as an "honourary girlie" in some of their hangouts because of their quietness and respect)

they are called the valkyries specifically because valkyries in norse mythology are beautiful female warriors who bring fallen soldiers to valhalla ("heaven") -> a poetic take on who they are

they are close friends with the marauders, depending on your hcs

i for one believe that marlene and james are childhood besties (because wizard families and quidditch) and lily and remus instantly connect (because of similar personalities and views), so the friendgroups are kind of merged immediatley

it also makes sense that the two gryffindor groups are connected to some degree -- i don't like the idea of them splitting up into "genders" so divisively, i view the different friendgroups as originating from their dorms and then mixing from there

where and how the slytherin skittles come in, usually depends on your hcs or the fic (as in, you go with what suits your story)

the obvious connection is regulus and sirius as brothers, so in fics where they are close, it makes sense that the friendgroups merge

other than that, the friendgroups usually merge through different ships: james/regulus, marlene/dorcas, lily/james, lily/pandora, remus/regulus, etc.

most people nowadays (ESPECIALLY ME) consider dorcas and (sometimes) pandora as either parts of the valkyries or at least good enough friends with them that they are together a lot

while i see dorcas and pandora as slytherin skittles/emeralds first and foremost, i will usually also include them in chats about the valkyries and will list poly!dorlene and poly!pandalily under the valkyries tag in my masterlist

they become integrated with the three valkyries at some point during their time at hogwarts; the original trio expands

i usually consider the shift to have happened around fifth year, but it's flexible

(if you want to know more about dorcas and pandora, i have a lot of headcanons about them under the slytherin skittles part of my masterlist)

i personally am an avid dorlene (dorcas/marlene) shipper and don't really entertain other pairings for either party, though i know some people are fond of marlene/mary

marylily is a huge other ship within the valkyries and is often considered "complementary" to dorlene

pandalily (pandora/lily) is also growing in popularity from what i've seen

if you want any headcanons for any of these ships (either on their own or poly x reader), i am more than willing 🥸

there are also wider friendgroups and other characters around at hogwarts that are sometimes mentioned or integrated into fics, either to serve a purpose or just for the vibes

some of these that i occasionally use are: the black sisters (reg&sirius' cousins andormeda, bellatrix and narcissa), amelia bones (hufflepuff), emmeline vance (ravenclaw), alice fortescue & frank longbottom, rita skeeter, ted tonks, the Bad Guys in slytherin lol (severus snape, rabastan lestrange, lucius malfoy, mulciber, avery, etc.)

since any lore is essentially entirely based in fanon, it is very much up to everyone's personal preference and is even subject to change from fic to fic, but all in all the valkyries are lily, marlene and mary + other potential girlies(gn) they drag with them along the way 🤍

how I think the marauders era characters would act in the day following a nightmare about a loved one dying

as an American it's fun to imagine the characters in the Harry Potter universe speaking in British accents rather than my default accent

Sirius: Quiet, more clingy, when asked says a vague, quiet little "i dunno" half speech half hum thing, and won't elaborate. affected a medium amount

Regulus: Looks at the person a lot throughout the day. Also won't explain. If someone brings that behavior up (though he is good at not being noticed), he does that brief little sneer thing or something else along those lines, overall doesn't let anyone know. will start to yell if consistently pressed

James: Spills the beans with minimal pressing, but doesn't volunteer the info unless it's stewed for a while. doesn't keep much to himself for long

Barty: Takes upon causing minor to moderate physical harm to the person in question, but not limited to that person. Like shoving them into a wall or squeezing them constrictor-like till it's hard for them to breathe. Generally won't tell. (if he does tell, it's undermined in a smart and conscious way, with acting skills too)

Pandora: Similar to Sirius, but has no qualms with telling. Affects her a bit more, in a more deep-down way, and causes a bit of that deep sad melancholia. She's used to that though and it's not terribly hard to move on. More affectionate towards others, but in that cat way where they just rest by you.

Evan: Similar to Reg, but doesn't try much if at all to hide staring. And more mature in dissuading people who pry. Doesn't consider it a secret, but considers it private to a degree. Not hard to get it out of him if you make a mediocre but persistent effort.

Remus: Very casual about it. It causes glumness and a bit of an on-edge moment, and serves as a song stuck in his head but less of a song. Slight increase in protectiveness. Same as Evan in terms of sharing.

Peter: Glum, downtrodden, after being bugged by the rest of the Marauders, will tell. Takes significantly longer for him to tell who died in the nightmare.

Lily: Boring white girl reaction. but deep thoughts and inner self-examination about this and a bit of psychoanalyzing. it sticks with her and for the split available second before getting killed, she remembers it. Harry doesn't meet that fate, even though she's imagined it

Marlene: "DORCAS IS DEEEEAAAAD! SHE'S DEAD, OH FUCK OH PLEASE LET IT--PLEASE LET IT NOT BE TRUE"

Hear me out:

Sirius travels to the future and goes to Hogwarts, he sees Remus as a professor and flirts with him and that kind of shit. It’s an au where Sirius in that timeline hasn’t escaped from Azkaban. He questions shit and Remus eventually tells him that he killed Lily, James and Peter and that he’s now in Azkaban and he can’t accept it, he has a mental breakdown. He finds out about what happened to the others like Marlene, Dorcas, Evan, Barty, Mary, Pandora etc. And he sees Luna yk and thinks about Pandora and he’s like “wait I thought Pandora was with Lily?”

then together they figure out what really happened cuz they see Peter on the marauders map. And they deal with him.

Then Sirius sees Harry and goes: “holy shit he looks just like James!! Am I an uncle?” And when Harry gets a little closer, he goes: “wait- his eyes? Why does he have blue eyes?” And Remus has to explain to him that Regulus joined the death eaters and died when he was 17 and that Harry’s mother is Lily and Sirius goes through another mental breakdown. And after he’s calmed down, he’s like: “so I’m not his uncle?” And Remus is like: “you’re the godfather.” And Sirius cheers up a little.

And when he sees that Harry is in love with Draco he is like: why do the potters have smth for the snarky, sad, depressed, Slytherin seekers who’s mean to them. And ppl from the black family. (I count Draco as a black cuz Narcissa is a black so yeah) (Regulus and Draco both getting the dark mark cuz they were forced😭😭😭)

and when Harry gets a tiny crush on ginny sirius goes like: HIS BEST MATES SIBLING?! OH LOOK HOW FUNNY SHES A GINGER TOO! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? See moony I told you it’s in his genes. (You can decide yourself if it’s endgame hinny or Drarry)

And he sees the Weasley twins and he’s like: “they’re my new idols!!” And Remus is like: “We’re their idols actually”

And he sees himself and James in Ron and Harry.

And after a few months when Sirius has caught up with everything, he flirts with Remus and is like: “you know moony I’m horny” and Remus is like: “well I can’t do anything about it, that would be pedophilia” and Sirius is like disappointed. But they eventually have sex (help😭Sirius is like 15 or 16 btw) and Sirius is like: “yOuR cOcK hAs GrOwN”. They take every chance they get to make out. And Remus is like: “oh how much I’ve missed this, missed you”

(They’re at Hogwarts btw) (it’s up to you if he pretends like he’s a student or if he’s hiding in Remus’ room) (but some professors would know if Sirius pretended like he was a student) (maybe he goes in disguise with polyjuice potion or smth?)

(He meets Harry if he’s just hiding and tells him everything but if you decide him to disguise as a student then he just watches from afar and doesn’t talk to him often.)

Remus asks him if this counts as cheating on his past self. And Sirius is like: “no you’re still you, so cheating on you with you is impossible”

Mcgonagall finds out about Sirius but doesn’t tell anyone.

Oh and it takes place during PoA and GoF. But the events just don’t happen, it’s like a normal Hogwarts year. So yeah no voldy coming back. Or no Sirius escaping Azkaban.

You can decide if Remus stays at Hogwarts during GoF or not, like the events didn’t happen so he doesn’t have to leave. But it’s up to you if he leaves and lives with Sirius in his house during GoF. But they’re definitely at Hogwarts during PoA.

and a bit to the end of GoF they figure out a way to send Sirius back to the 70s. Sirius says goodbye to everyone and leaves (Remus is like FUCKING sad cuz he has no one left) and as soon as Sirius is back he begs his brother to run away with him so that that terrible things don’t happen and he talks to James and Remus about Peter, and they do smth to fix that.

I don’t even know how to explain this fic because there is simply too much to say but I would recommend it even to those who don’t like this ship as much because it’s worth it. Moths to a Spotlight: Sirius, Peter, Marlene, Dorcas (no band name yet so shoot your shot if you want to)

the marauders era characters have a LOT of different roles here. Regulus and Pandora are ballet dancers, Mary and Peter grew up together & met Remus in highschool in America and did music but now Mary and Remus are like what billie is to finneas? (also i made Remus southern) Alice is a ball of whimsy and the next artist of our time painting only in vibrant and swelling colours BUT has one singular monochrome painting and i'll explain later. Evan manages Mary and Remus and MINERVA, queen that she is, is basically the band's mother/manager. fluffy black brothers!! oh, and andromeda is dead. whaaaat who said that

i know what you're thinking "where the fuck is james?? lily?? barty??" heh heh WELL you're not gonna like this. lily is the villain here and not in a good way. it was a VERY toxic marylily and lily is the Casual girl (chappell roan) ANYWAAAY you're gonna see a LOT of that BUT she does have her redemption arc. i think. maybe.

barty broke up with sirius right before they went on tour, a couple months before the beginning of the fic. they grew up together, its very bittersweet, might give you heartburn. AGAIN redemption arc.

and uh the jegulus here will just slap you in the face

OR. Mary and Sirius break up with Lily and Barty respectively and have to figure out how to clean up the mess from here only to be slapped in the face with new love interests. Mary joins Sirius' band as an opener for the european leg of their world tour and along the way finds that to love someone isnt pouring all of yourself down their drain hoping they'll eventually be satisfied but to be respected, remembered and cared for. While Sirius slowly falls head over heels for an oblivious Remus who joined Mary on the tour. At every stop it becomes more and more obvious until finally Sirius, a rockstar, ends up performing a sweet love song completely different from his music style as a love confession with help of Peter.

“Sirius, I told you not to try and put your own eyeliner on without me,” Remus told him between fits of laughter. 

“You look like a sad panda!” Regulus was almost useless at this point. His laughter shook his entire frame, and he was struggling to breathe. 

“Oi, sod off then!” Sirius sulked. 

“Sirius, wait!” Regulus called, getting his laughter under control. “Is James there?”

“Yeah. Hang on a sec, and I’ll get him. JAMES!!!” He bellowed, not even bothering to move away from the mirror. 

“What’s up, Padfoot? You alright?” Huge guffaws burst from James’s mouth once he caught sight of Sirius’s botched makeup attempt. 

“Oh, bugger off, Prongs!” Sirius stormed off. He dropped the mirror on the bed so Regulus and Remus got a lovely view of the ceiling. James grabbed it up, and his face filled the glass. 

“Hi, love, you alright? Hi Remus.” He waved. 

“Hi,” Remus waved back. Regulus nodded. 

“Is Sirius coming back?” He asked. 

“Sirius, you coming back or not?” James called just as loudly as Sirius had. They could hear Sirius shuffling back into the room, and he appeared next to James, now free from his makeup. 

“I found it,” Regulus smirked. “Took it right out from under Lucius’s nose.” The three of them gawped at him in disbelief. 

“Where was it?” Sirius asked. 

“In his library on the centre bookcase.”

“Are you kidding?! Godric, he’s an idiot.” Sirius snorted. 

“Will he notice it’s gone?” Remus asked seriously. 

“I don’t think so. He caught me near it, but I pretended to be really drunk, and he got me out of there, probably scared of his first editions. I used a transfiguration spell of a—on something else there and imbued it with a small amount of dark magic at the same time. I doubt Lucius will be able to tell the difference.”

“Are we meeting at Rosier House tonight, then?” James wanted to know. 

“No. Both of my parents are here, and it’s late. If we go out now, it will be suspicious. Mother has meetings or something most of the day tomorrow. So we’ll meet, say, around 9? As long as the coast is clear.”

They made their goodnights, and all went to bed. 

Walburga left early the next morning, and so did the boys. 

They were surprised to see James, Sirius and Lily already there, waiting for them in the house. 

“You’re here early,” Regulus said as he accepted a kiss from James. James shrugged. 

“Sirius and I are. That one stayed the night,” He jabbed his thumb at Lily and was hit with a tickling hex. “Worth it,” He gasped. 

“Come on then. Spill the beans. Why have you gathered the Thestrals at this ungodly hour?” Evan questioned, stopping Lily and James from going any further. Regulus pulled the diary from his pocket and held it up. 

“I found it.” He told them. And when he explained where he found it, Barty chirped in. 

“What is with these guys and being such—” Pandora waltzed over and stuffed a cauldron cake in Barty’s mouth as they all knew what had been about to come out of his mouth. He stuck his fingers up but mostly quietly ate his treat.

“So now all we need to do is destroy them?” Lily asked Regulus. He nodded. “Great, I’ll go get the venom.”

“Wait,” He stopped her. “I think we need to take them somewhere to do it. In case something happens when we try and destroy them.” 

They sat for a while, thinking of places to go. 

“Random field?” Evan suggested. 

“If we could properly ward it. But then, if the field is destroyed, how would we cover it up?” Regulus rebutted. They kept coming up against the same problem. If the Horcruxes destroyed the area, how would they hide it? 

“What about the forbidden forest?” Remus wondered aloud. “As long as we stay clear of the centaur heard and the acromantula. We should be left alone, and if we destroy a bit of the forest, it’s huge and will regrow itself over what was lost.” Sirius and James both nodded, thinking it was a great idea. 

“What do you mean acromantula? Are there actually acromantula in the forest?” Barty and the others had gone slightly paler than usual at the thought of the murderous arachnids. 

“We know where they are. As long as we don’t go near the nest, we’ll be fine.” Sirius waved off their fears. “We’ve been in there loads of times and never had a problem.”

“Right, it’s settled then. We meet tomorrow in the forbidden forest.” He looked to James. “Where should we actually meet?”

“Wait in the trees behind Hagrid’s cabin. That’s probably going to be the easiest place to gather, especially if we arrive at different times.” He looked around the room at the seven other people. “I can do this on my own, you know. You can all stay here, and I’ll go on my own.”

“What, and let you take all the glory, fuck off,” Barty smirked. 

“Can’t do tomorrow, Reggie,” Sirius spoke up. 

“Why not?” Sirius had nothing else to do. He’d been complaining for days that Moody wouldn’t give him an assignment. 

“It’s Jamie’s birthday, and we have a date with Monty and Effie.” Regulus spun to look at James, horrified. 

“I forgot your birthday.” 

“Don’t worry about it. You’ve had a lot on your mind.” James consoled him. 

“You guys free in the evening?” Evan asked. 

“Yeah. Should be. We’re just having lunch with my parents.” James answered. 

“Good. That means you can come to you’re birthday party here.” Pandora beamed at him. She grabbed Lily’s hand. “Come on, dear, let’s go catch some fairies for the lights.” And she skipped out of the room, towing Lily behind her. 

“That okay, delaying a day?” James asked Regulus.

“Of course, we’ll go to the forest after.” James beamed at him and scooped him up to plant a kiss on his lips.

marlene is zoe kravitz. daughter of two really fucking cool parents who ended up also being really fucking cool in her own right. definite trendsetter, fashion icon, and stunningly gorgeous but that's just my opinion

lily and her sister are elle and dakota fanning, that sort of sibling nepotism. petunia gets famous as a child actor, when lily is much younger, and then lily grows up and eventually becomes more beloved than her. you see the parallels here

regulus. regulus is bella hadid. definitely got where he is because of his head start in life, but also really good at what he does, and also we are all so sorry about your mom. the constant comparisons to his sibling, their distance in the public eye, and the superseding parental fame by just staying booked and being iconic.

pandora and evan are willow and jaden. i dont know if i need to explain this at length, they just are. crazily famous parents, but they strike out on their own and do a little bit of everything

Especially the "and some roommates" part where remus, Sirius, and Peter chime in with "don't worry we're cool." (Bonus: James a n d Marlene duet it singing about their slytherin crushes)

Femininomenon- the Valkyries singing this on tables when the boys get too annoying up. They jump on tables and take over the party, but ofc the boys join anyway bc who can resist

REGGIE- regulus black - also known as R.A.B. - syltherin - he is a mama's boy. he - i love him. he writes sad boy poetry. he died for nothing which is sad. he is very angsty and is friends with Evan and Barty and Pandora and Remus and Dorcas. his unofficial animagus is a black cat because he is the embodiment of a black cat.

jegulus - or starchaser or sunseeker - james and regulus. star because regulus is named after a star and chase because that is the position james plays in quidditch. sun because james is the embodiment of the sun and seeker because that is regulus's quidditch position. it is annoyances to lovers, in love with best friend's brother, opposites attract. started out as a joke/crack ship and is now one of the most popular ships in the fandoms

jegulily - james x lily x regulus - its jily and jegulus kinda combined and i love it and i cant explain why I love it so much.

rosekiller - @boba-pearl gets me more and more in love with them everyday. and please lets be sirius serous about this for a sec /lh -- rose because evan's last name is rosier and killer because barty kills people- cant make this shit up lmao. they are insane and i love them so much. they just kinda work. they balance eachother out- evan makes sure barty doesnt accidently kills himself and barty makes sure evan is living life a little on the edge

party - salem is the best (the person who created this ship) it is barty x peter - its their names combined. i have so many feelings about them but i have even more about the next one

so their parents are horrible and not great at all. so much so that sirus ran away and got burned off the family tree. he moved in with the potters. but, he left regulus. regulus then got mad about it and the angst around it is sooo sad. but sometimes they reunite- mainly with jegulus involved (which sometimes when jegulus is a secret and sirius finds out- he calls james a brother-fucker)

also, sirius and regulus are technically brothers and cousins.... the black family is very much into pure blood stuff.

‘Bride or groo-, oh sorry mate didn’t realise it was you,’ Peter said offering Regulus a smile. He’d been hoping to slip in and sit at the back given he wasn’t exactly in the mood to talk to anyone but Remus and Peter were ushers, creating a bottleneck at the door of the church as they chatted to each guest that entered and showed them to their seats. Remus appeared at Peter’s side a moment later the wizened old woman he’d been helping now sitting in the seat, though she didn’t look as though she knew where she was, her eyes wandering around the stone architecture as she sucked heartily on a humbug.

‘Yeah,’ Regulus said eager to get seated, ‘er James’ side I guess.’

‘Right yeah,’ Peter said, producing an order of service for him before he said, ‘right side.’

‘Thanks,’ Regulus nodded curtly though as he moved to get past Remus said, ‘you look nice.��

‘Thank you,’ Regulus said again, glancing down at his wide lapelled all black suit. He wasn’t dressed over the top seeing as it was a half muggle wedding he hadn't wanted to wear dress robe. And since Sirius and Remus had been out of the flat this morning, after spending the night at the Potters, and therefore not able to guide him in how to dress he was happy he hadn't. Remus and Peter were dressed in dark tweed three-piece suits, bottle green ties poking out against stark white shirts. Their outfits looked good if a little boring in comparison to a traditional wizard wedding but he muttered, ‘you too,’ all the same.

And then before he was caught in any further conversation he brushed past them both and found a seat on a back pew. The church was nearly full by now with people milling around and chatting to those they knew. Regulus slunk down in his seat, leafing through the order of service. There were hymns he didn’t know and a reading he knew to be nauseatingly twee even if it was traditional. If he was being honest with himself he didn’t know why he had come. Well that was a lie he’d come because he’d been unexpectedly invited, though a glance around had told him the majority of the wizarding community had, and because there was no way to explain to Sirius why he didn’t want to attend not when he was done with school and as yet to start his job or have any excuse for not coming.

But as he heard his brother’s laugh catch on the air, bouncing off ancient stone as it wafted towards him, he looked up and found the reason he’d come. James. 

He looked exquisite in his suit, a match to his brother’s and his friends and yet still seeming more alluring on the messy haired boy. He was laughing at something Sirius had said, glee in his eyes as they chatted at the end of the altar. 

Regulus watched him, he was the reason he was here after all. It was time to face the music, to address the turmoil and heartache that had been plaguing Regulus for nearly a year. Except he didn’t stand up and profess his undying love. He didn’t run to James and beg him not to get married. In fact as the music started and Lily started walking down the aisle he didn’t do anything but stare at her. 

She looked radiant. A vision in an elegant white gown, her auburn hair falling around her face in soft waves, highlighting milky skin and radiant green eyes. And as she took her place beside her husband to be Regulus couldn’t help but admit that the pair looked well matched and to his sorrow, radiantly happy. Anyone could see that. As James made vows to his new wife and whisked her off back down the aisle there was no hesitation, nothing but undying love. Nothing but Lily Evans on his mind.

And so Regulus moved through the motions of the day on autopilot. He clapped when they kissed. He sipped champagne as he waited for the wedding party to be done with the photographer. He chatted politely to Remus and thanked Euphemia and Fleamont for their invite, as a gentleman would. He ate the dry chicken and didn’t complain when he was given soup not salad though the temperature in the reception venue was easily knocking into double digits. He even forced a laugh in Sirius’ best man speech and clapped at the end of James’ trying to ignore the bile in his throat as he spoke about their love withstanding anything. And as the pair got up to do their first dance, to a whiny muggle crooner Lily had obviously chosen, Regulus got up out of his seat and stood around the dance floor, watching with the others as they oohed and aahed. 

Though as he watched James spin her around the dance floor, the poise and precision he sported on the quidditch field somehow not translating to ballroom dancing, Regulus couldn’t help but wonder.

Wonder if he could’ve stopped it all. Not even the wedding. Not even by standing up and protesting that they don’t get married. No, long before today, when James had told him he loved him. It was a memory he’d thought of countless times, mostly in the dead of night when his bunk mates were too comatose to hear him crying, and each time he wished he could change it. He wished he could make himself be brave, to say it back.

He wondered if that had been what made James rethink. It was obvious he loved Lily, adored her, but he had loved Regulus too and maybe if Regulus hadn't been too scared to admit he felt the same they wouldn't be standing here at all, on opposite sides of the dance floor

Except he hadn't. He hadn’t said a word, not even when he’d had the chance at his ‘returning to school’ party. He could’ve told them all then. It would’ve meant a flip out from Sirius possibly James too. Lily would’ve been flabbergasted and it would’ve been all around the school before he’d even returned. But he could've done it. 

But he hadn’t. 

He hadn’t told a soul and now there was no changing anything. It was too late.

He would have to live and let live. James Potter was a married man and if he had to admit it Lily made a lovely bride. 

But as other couples started to join them on the dance floor the outpouring of love became too much and Regulus fell back through the crowd until he was up near the marquees exit and when no one was looking he slipped out.

Though the sky was still light it had gotten significantly cooler out here, enough to make Regulus shiver now there wasn’t a mass of bodies around him. He could feel the tears coming, stinging at his eyes but not spilling over as he looked up at the faint crescent moon, present but not being given room to shine due to the sun refusing to dip beyond the horizon just yet. 

Regulus looked at it. He knew how it felt to be a summer's moon, trying so hard to shine when the sun was still around to eclipse you. Although he wasn’t sure who the sun was in this scenario as Lily was just as radiant. Then again just like the sun James touched every inch of his life. He'd never be able to escape him without losing Sirius too which wasn’t an option. So he would have to accept that for now he had to be eclipsed. And maybe one day it would get easier. When autumn fell and the sun started to recede he'd have his time to shine free of encumberments. Because James' life was mapped out for him now. He'd become a father, he’d have his own family, one that held the marauders close but not in one another’s pockets. Remus and Sirius would do the same and Regulus would have no choice but to stand on his own two feet. To shine on his own. 

When he heard rustling, the telltale sound of the marquee flap opening as it allowed laughter and music to float into the silence, he straightened up and furiously brushed the tears away hoping that whoever it was wouldn’t be able to tell he had be crying though as he turned around to check he kind of hoped it would be James coming to find him, that he'd be able to see the hurt he had, that he still, caused.

Only it wasn’t James.

It was Sirius who was coming towards him, his suit now dishevelled the drunker he’d gotten though his face was stoic and serious. Remus was standing by the marquee entrance, a sympathetic look on his face. Sirius glanced back at him and nodded as if instructing him to duck back inside, to stand watch of the door. Regulus folded his arms across his chest. He’d faced many a withering stare from his mother and many a thunderous rant from his father without breaking. He’d been screamed at and hexed and had learned to remain quiet and collected knowing any sign of weakness would only anger them further. What he had not faced though was this.

Love. It was plastered all over his brother's face from the way he looked at him knowingly, radiating sympathy. It made Regulus falter, his voice uneven as he asked, ‘what are you doing out here?’

‘Making sure you're okay,’ Sirius said truthfully.

‘I’m fine,’ Regulus lied.

‘Reggie,’ Sirius said quietly and that was all it took to get Regulus to crumble. He found himself moving towards his brother who dutifully opened his arms and wrapped them around him, his hand stroking Regulus’ hair gently.

Even with Sirius being as nice as he was it didn’t take long for the embarrassment to settle in but Regulus couldn’t make himself pull away fearing allowing him to look at the mess he was would only make him feel worse. So with as big of a voice as he could muster he asked, ‘did he…did James tell you?’

‘He didn’t have to,’ Sirius said quietly, ‘I’m so sorry Reggie.’

Regulus inhaled deeply. He could still see the moon, brighter now that the sun had finally dipped beyond the horizon making it shine against an inky blue sky. 

‘Me too.’
