Not to preach to the choir but I wonder if people generally realize that AI models like ChatGPT aren't, like, sifting through documented information when you ask it particular questions. If you ask it a question, it's not sifting through relevant documentation to find your answer, it is using an intensely inefficient method of guesswork that has just gone through so many repeated cycles that it usually, sometimes, can say the right thing when prompted. It is effectively a program that simulates monkeys on a typewriter at a mass scale until it finds sets of words that the user says "yes, that's right" to enough times. I feel like if it was explained in this less flattering way to investors it wouldn't be nearly as funded as it is lmao. It is objectively an extremely impressive technology given what it has managed to accomplish with such a roundabout and brain-dead method of getting there, but it's also a roundabout, brain-dead method of getting there. It is inefficient, pure and simple.

I'm curious,

If an Fairy changes court, like Upper(Fairy) to Circuit(Pixie), what happens to the Lower court(Anti-fairy) counterpart?

Do they just cease to exist? Will they come back if the change is reversed? Will they have any idea of what happened?

In addition to that, does the Leisure court(specialty fairies) have a Lower court counterpart, or is it just the Upper court that has that?

And if it's only the upper court that has that, why only them?

Besides Timmy, Pixies and Leisure fairies actually can't change courts! They're stuck the way they're born because they technically lack a living counterpart!

Leisure Fairies are bound to their specialty, while Pixies are bound to their work. But Uppers and Lowers are bound to each other, which is why they can swap places. If a fairy's counterpart dies or disappears, so does the original and vis-versa.

The only exception to this rule is if the "Binding" of the fairies are changed before the counterpart dies.

Additional fun fact! There's technically 4 Fairy "realms". They're stacked on top of each other, and it's progressively harder to get to each one the higher they are (Only Leisure Fairies can access ""Olympus"", for example). They have official names but nobody bothers to use them.

Athena's last argument to won the game was literally saying in a magic colleseum full of every single greek magical creature

"Yeah, Zeus is a cheater and a fuckboy, unlike Odysseus"

Athena literally won by insulting Zeus in front of everyone's faces and making Hera, the Goddess of Marriage and very much known wife of Zeus, agree with that.

Zeus was not pissed at Odysseus, he was very much pissed at Athena for using a mortal to compare him (and it goes somehow along the original story, in which Zeus complains about the humans being pissed at the gods for their fates when the gods are basically just "doing their jobs")

Being both aroace and a huge nerd, it irks me a little that 99% of the asexual and/or aroace headcanons I see (and not aroallo headcanons interestingly, which could be its own post but I digress) are about characters who spend all their time working/studying/etc…. scientists, academics, introverts, shut-ins, even. I assume the common reasoning is that these characters only care about their work and don’t have time for things like relationships and sex. But like. You know that’s not what asexuality is… right 😀

Obviously it’s fine to headcanon these types of characters as ace, but I just always wonder about allo fans’ reasoning for it and what it implies about their opinions of asexual people. When the ONLY characters you can think of as ace are just nerdy, quiet/socially awkward characters with no other canon implications that they’d be ace, to me it just sounds like you think people are asexual because they can’t attract sexual partners? Or because they don’t have time for relationships??

Anyway it just annoys me a little that this is the VAST majority of the ace representation I see, both in canon and fandom. I’m an aroace academic, but I’m not aroace because I don’t have time for people or because I’m shy or awkward or lonely or whatever. I’m aroace because I’m aroace lol

Tl;dr, asexual/aroace people aren’t all innocent nerdy introverts (and aroallos aren’t all extroverts with a long history of one night stands, btw). Let ace characters be loud and stupid. Or try headcanoning a loud and stupid character as ace (you can do it, I promise)

I've started reading Seth Dickinson's Exordia. (Only about 1/4 of the way through, no spoilers please.)

It's a lot of fun! But it's also kind of frustrating.

What I've read so far could be described – with an eerie degree of precision [*] – as "a cross between Axiom's End and Almost Nowhere."

And like, in the abstract, that sounds great! But that's the problem. These precedents set very high expectations for "how much I, personally, am going to like this book," and even when Exordia is doing fine on its own terms, it's hard for me to avoid thinking things like "this part was better the first time I saw it," or mentally rounding the book off to "just a somewhat worse version of something else."

You know that cute line people say sometimes, "[X] would be so good if it was good"? I won't say that about Exordia, because it is good, at least sort of. But there's a similar thing going on.

Again, I'm not that far in yet, so maybe it'll grow on me.

[*] Seriously, some of the similarities are kind of spooky. My best guess is that it's all coincidental and/or the result of shared influences – among other things, the afterword says the first draft of Exordia was finished in 2017, predating AE and the vast majority of AN. (And of course the chances that any given person has read or heard of AN are basically negligible to begin with.)
