🖋️ You Don’t Need to “Write Every Day” to Be a Real Writer (and Other Guilt-Crushing Truths)
Let’s make this one loud: 📣 You are not a failed writer because you didn’t open your Google Doc today.
We’ve all heard the advice, write every day, build the habit, protect the streak, treat it like brushing your teeth or doing crunches or whatever metaphor productivity Twitter is pushing this week.
But here’s the thing: You are not a factory. Your brain is not a faucet. And writing isn’t a moral behavior.
─────── ✦ ───────
🚫 Daily Writing is Not a Badge of Legitimacy
The "write every day" rule? It wasn’t invented for you. It came from a very specific kind of writer.... usually full-time, no kids, no chronic illness, no 60-hour day job, no executive dysfunction, that lives in a world made of schedules and uninterrupted mornings.
You? You’re probably doing your best between classes, during night shifts, after crying, before therapy, while microwaving pizza rolls.
If you’re writing at all, you’re already in the game. No daily streak required. No blood oath to the Scrivener gods. You don’t need to bleed ink to prove you’re real.
─────── ✦ ───────
🧠 Writing is Mental, Even When It’s Invisible
Plotting in the shower. Thinking about your character’s tragic backstory at red lights. Whispering fake arguments into your Notes app at 3am. Staring at the ceiling replaying one scene until it rots.
It all counts.
Writing is thinking, not just typing. That mental compost pile? That’s how the good stuff grows. You don’t owe your worth to a word count. Some days, the work looks like a blank page and a brain on fire.
─────── ✦ ───────
🔄 Rest Is Part of the Process, Not a Detour From It
Let me say this plainly: Burnout is not proof of effort.
You are allowed to pause. You are allowed to stop mid-project. You are allowed to write in bursts. You are allowed to write for a week and disappear for a month.
Writing is a relationship. It has seasons. It expands and contracts. You are not a robot with a daily quota, you’re a person carrying a whole fictional world inside you. Let yourself be human.
─────── ✦ ───────
📆 Consistency Helps--But Define It For Yourself
Do some writers thrive with routines? Sure. But routine =/= daily.
Try this: → “I write every weekend morning when I can.” → “I jot down notes during my commute.” → “I commit to one hour a week, guilt-free.” → “I take two weeks off after every chapter.” → “I only write during November and spiral gloriously.”
Build a rhythm that actually matches your energy, not one that shames you for not vibing like a full-time author in a lakeside cabin with nothing to do but word vomit and sip tea.
─────── ✦ ───────
💌 You’re Still a Real Writer (Even When You’re Not Producing)
You don’t need:
a finished draft
a daily goal
a growing WIP
a thriving project
a clever new idea
…to be a writer.
You only need:
the drive to tell a story
the will to try again
the love of the craft, even when it doesn’t love you back
You’re a real writer if you write sometimes. You’re a real writer if you write badly. You’re a real writer if you wrote once and it changed you.
─────── ✦ ───────
✨ Guilt Kills Stories Faster Than “Laziness” Ever Will
You’re not lazy. You’re probably: → Overwhelmed → Tired → Burnt out → Depressed → Distracted by survival → Caught in perfectionism’s death grip
And the guilt? It doesn’t make you more productive. It just sinks its teeth into your confidence until you start to believe you’ve “fallen behind” on something that’s supposed to be yours.
The best thing you can do for your writing life? Protect your joy. That spark. That curiosity. That itch to build something from nothing.
That matters more than any streak.
─────── ✦ ───────
📣 Final Truths (Pin These to Your Soul):
Missing writing days is not failure.
Your process is not wrong just because it’s not loud.
You are not in a race.
You are not a fraud.
You are allowed to come back whenever.
Writing is not a productivity metric. It’s a craft. It’s a calling. It’s a weird little ritual.
And it’ll still be there when you’re ready.
See you on the page, whether that’s tomorrow, or next week, or next season.

How To Be A Productive Writer
(I'm not productive now but when I was, this is how I did it)
1. Keep a tidy workspace. (I don't even do that anymore lol, I'm too depressed)
2. Figure out how you write best. Maybe you like to type things out, write them on paper, record your voice and write/type it down later.
3. Give yourself breaks to avoid burnout
4. Minimize Distractions , even if it seems productive. Limit searching things up and doing research mid writing session
5. Don't be too hard on yourself
6. Don't worry about making everything perfect.
7. Don't be afraid to be flexible. It's okay to totally scrap aspects of your story or entire chapters.
8. Commit to a story idea. It's the hardest for me personally but if you don't commit to any stories, you'll probably never write it.

👓 Day [50 of 100] of Productivity 👓
Writing: - Meduse a centinaia; Chapter 3 (... completed!) 14,000+ words, editing in progress and first to come on the updating agenda. I'm updating this weekend if nothing interferes with my plans. Fingers crossed! - Meduse a centinaia; Chapter 4 and 5 (... working on the second drafts) My Word document just reached 100k words! And the number of total chapters become ten, instead of nine. This was supposed to be a cute and little story (snack size) just to fulfill my desire to write a First Time!Fic, and now I'm dealing with all this mind-fucking full meal. I hope you'll enjoy it, just like I'm enjoying the writing process. ( ^-^) - Tre del mattino? Gnocchi al formaggio! (... one-shot, first draft work in progress) You don't want to know about this one. No, seriously. You don't. I'm still questioning its existence, so please don't expect something soon…
Reading: - Il garbuglio di Garlasco, by Gabriella Ambrosio (... completed!) - L'estate di Garlasco, by Francesco Caringella
Listening to: HERE WE GO, by Lil Nas X
Snacking on: Kinder Bueno Ice cream
Extra: Bad news: my glasses broke, so I had to buy a new pair. Good news: checking out my eyesight, they found out that I needed a stronger pair, so now I'm seeing better than ever! But… that's where all the extra money of my extra shift went, sigh. I was hoping to save them and use them during my summer vacation. :(

8 Ways to Write More, More Often:
Set smart goals and stretch goals. Smart goals are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based. Stretch goals are the little bit extra you can reach if a writing session goes well.
Build small habits. Small habits are easier to build than large ones. Writing fifty words every day for a week can become 500 words daily more easily than starting with a big and daunting target. Big habits begin small. Consider establishing a system that works, instead of setting lofty goals that you aren't quite sure how to reach.
Work on perspective and your locus of control. "Locus of control" refers to whether a person sees events as unfolding due to external forces more, or due to their own agency and action. Keep reading for more on how this connects to productivity. Keeping productive (not just in writing) comes easier to people when they believe in their own agency, in the power of actions they take to create the outcomes they want.
Check in with a productivity or writing coach. If you struggle with creating the systems and accountability to stay productive, ask for help. A writing buddy or coach can hold you accountable with kindness and thoughtful, measured input. A writing coach helps through a combination of discussion about your work and ideas, feedback on writing identifying improvement areas and providing stimulating questions and/or suggestions, and encouragement and support when you most need them.
Embrace the motivating power of groups and teams. Writing is a solitary pursuit but a caring writing group may help you sustain your commitment to your story. It's easier to keep showing up together. The best writing groups provide a safe place to find something like beta readers who are writers, too. A place to renew your focus through productive discussion.
Use planning and productivity tools. Calendars, spreadsheets, or a place where you record your daily writing streaks help you keep track of progress. Your story planning tools may be as simple as a calendar to set alarmed reminders for writing sessions or sprints, or a more complex system.
Build in vital breaks. Build breaks into your writing routine – self-care keeps muses happy. In planning smart goals and stretch goals, writing sprints and sessions, remember to build in breaks. Not writing is not necessarily not writing. Burnout is both easy to reach and easy to avoid.
Feed your writing focus. What are the ingredients of better productivity in writing and other endeavors? Motivation. Focus. Intention. Discipline. Identify your best creative environment. Eliminate prominent distractions. Schedule focused time.

I can barely write two pages together for a research paper, but oh boy give me a brain worm involving two or more of my favorite imaginary people and bam 20 pages in under two hours. Somebody please lobotomize me, I hear it makes you more productive.
It’s so hot when he scratches his head and pretends to be stupid.

In psychology, this is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect.
Poor students lack insight into their own limitations – as they would have to know about the vast amount of knowledge out there to be able to see how little they know in comparison. That means that those who are not very good at something tend to be overly confident, while those who have made an effort tend to underestimate their abilities. Poor students also have no trouble finding a question to write about: they neither lack opinions nor the confidence that they have already thought them through. They also won’t have trouble finding confirming evidence in the literature as they usually lack both interest and skill to detect and think through disconfirming facts and arguments.

🌱 Day [46 of 100] of Productivity 🌱
Writing: - La cosa più pericolosa; Chapter 24 (... completed! Editing in progress.) - La cosa più pericolosa; Chapters 25&26 (... working on the first draft.) These are going to be the first two chapters of the new story arc, and working on them is a real challenge. I hope to make it through. (ᵕ—ᴗ—) - Meduse a centinaia; Chapters 2&3 (... working on the second drafts.) Since "La cosa più pericolosa" is reaching a very important turning point, I think I'm going to prioritize it to not lose focus. Boy, I will surely need a massive dose of focus. Also... did you know that my Word Document just reached 200,000+ words? 👀 I may be wrong, but I bet this is going to be the longest story of the saga (5 stories total). In the meanwhile, "Meduse" will slow down a little, but fear not -- I'm keeping up! ᯓ★
Reading: - Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, by Gregory Maguire - Conclave, by Robert Harris (... completed!) I also saw the movie, before reading the novel -- Stanley Tucci and Sergio Castellitto were the sweetest cherries on the cake top! I talked about it with my dad (he saw the movie as well) during our little breakfast, when we met after the morning of my routine blood test. It surprised me how, in the novel, the main character Lawrence is in fact the Italian Lomeli. It didn't bother me, tho. The only and biggest disappointment? Tedesco did not vape even once.👏Let👏that👏man👏vape👏.
Listening to: Rainbow Nights (album), by Black Magick S/S (... I'm literally obsessed with this, and it was my only soundrack during the latest writing sessions)
Snacking on: Fresh strawberries milkshake
Extra: Despite the heavy rains (can you smell my first picture? I bet you can!), the brain fog I suffered from in those last weeks is starting to fade. I hope the desire to be productive will prevail on the fatigue that sometimes still hunts me. I'm pretty sure a new tattoo would fix me. 😏
