Reminiscing about this old Helsinki Zine Fest panel from 2019 :)

Zine Fest panel on September 8, Sunday, at 1pm! Join us for a fun panel about webcomics! Dear readers! There has been a surge in newcomers on this page lately, so let me introduce myself again for Pride Month.

I am Sophie, the neurodivergent author of these comics. I'm from Montreal, Quebec, and English is my third language (French is my first, which probably makes everything I say sound more sarcastic, sorry about that - or not). And yes, Labelle is my real, actual last name.

I started this project 11 years ago as a way to give a break to my queer and trans friends at school, who were constantly re-explaining the same stuff ad nauseam, and because of how little representation I was getting as a young trans girl. I soon started to get invitations to talk about my work around the planet, and that's when I decided to quit school to focus entirely on this project!

A lot has happened since, between getting my address posted on 4chan, having my books banned in Texas schools, being stalked 24/7 by an alt-right forum, having British MPs going to the media and calling my comics an affront to civilisation, or having an actual neo-n*zi group storm a library I was speaking at in New Zealand. Thankfully, meeting so many of you has made it worth my while!

That's how, during a speaking tour in the Nordics, I met my Finnish husband, who is also an artist. We now live in the subarctic forest (in an old house that keeps flooding) with our cat and a flock of ducks.

As an independent artist, the work that I do is entirely made possible by you! Without your support, I wouldn't be able to turn so many Texan school librarians into smugglers. It's thanks to people who get me a coffee here and there that I'm able to focus on creating art that pisses off as many TERFs as possible (link in the comments if you want to participate). You can also become a patron of this comic, which gets me closer to my dream of one day causing the downfall of civilisation!

Here’s my new free 8-fold I was handing out at the SCAD Minicomic Expo! I’ll have more free copies with me at future shows.

I’ve been dabbling in game making lately using open source & free assets so I wanted to collect everything I’ve learned so far in one place. Coding has been really fun as a hobby since it marries skills I already have with an entirely new way of thinking.

This zine was put together with Electric Zine Maker which I highly recommend to everyone.

A little animation from 2010! A test run cycle for Hanna is Not a Boy's Name. This was actually the first run cycle I animated successfully and stitched together digitally too. There used to be a fan animation project and while I didn't officially join, I did lurk the forums of this project and started making a little test animation back then. I have a lot of good memories of this time. This is what I intended the final frames to look like. I started doing the final inks and colors in openCanvas 1.1 but that's where I left off I think.

I recently got to introduce the comic a bit to a friend, so I thought I'd dust off ye olde fanarts. the video will still not upload. mayhapes bc it is 10+ years old? Perhaps. So I made a new GIF instead. This was a very fun comic to read while I was worried about school and more around the time.

Hey! Check out a game I helped make in february this year :) Although I hadn't coded in GameMaker 2 before, it was interesting and quite motivating for my dayjob as a gamedev teacher.

Edit 18.04.2024: I sensed that perhaps february was too close of a timeperiod for a gamejam and I was right, I got corrected today by my team-mate xD it was december when we were in this gamejam!

Escapement Complex

Interactive digital experiment with the GameMaker engine (1280×720px) 2023

A group project, made in two days at Tallinn University during the GameMaker game jam on 9-10.12.2023. Our team happened to consist of just me and my two artist friends Ellis and Anni. None of us had used the GameMaker engine before, so we barely got it done. The theme we were given was “free at last.” We wanted to ask “what about after freedom?” The game story is that you play as a lab experiment who escaped and this is your freedom – unexciting life in a panel building with some other escapees, like a new prison. I designed the player character and did the pixel art direction.

Anni: @4nnih6 They teach game making at TLÜ and did the programming for this, putting it all together. Ellis instagram: @ellis_bug He has partaken in so many game jams!! He came up with the lab part of the backstory, plus various character designs.

Here's a presentation about the game, which shows off more assets, including some things which didn't make it in. Hallmäe / Grey hill is an alternative title for the game, referencing Mustamäe and other panel building areas of Tallinn.
