A Night Unexpected (One-Shot)
Summary: A hard-working lab researcher encounters Loki during a late night working and can not help, but feel captivated by him. However, when the researcher agrees to go on a date with her brash co-worker, Loki ends up saving the day (or at least the date).

The lab was quiet except for the light hum of the machines. During the day, the lab could feel like it would burst from the noise with all the scientists working on their projects and yelling over the music that Tony Stark insists is required for inventing. Everyone else had already gone home for the night, and now it was just you sitting at your station.
You heard the door squeak and a light footstep. When you turned around, you expected to see another one of your coworkers coming back to retrieve a forgotten item, but instead were greeted by a different presence, Loki.Â
âI expected you might be in here,â Loki said, illuminated by only the light in the hallway. Despite the darkness of the lab, you could still see the sharp angles of his face and his gentle smile to you.Â
âI suppose I have become predictable,â you laugh quietly. âI just enjoy being able to have some time to myself and thoughts, away from all the chaos.â
âI apologize for interrupting your thoughts. What are you working on now that requires you here so late?â
âItâs not that late Loki, itâs only-â you look at the clock, âI suppose the time got away from me again.â
He laughs and slowly sits down on the stool next to you. âYou are very dedicated to your work, I-â he pauses, âItâs admirable how much care you put into the things you love.âÂ
You look up at him, stunned by what he just said. Your mouth is slightly agape as you try to think of a response. Does he truly think Iâm admirable? This is a man who works with the Avengers, who helped save Asgard. Eventually you close your mouth and look down at your work, so Loki continues.
âTell me more about what youâre working on,â He said with a smile, eyes looking at you with anticipation.
âAre you sure? I tend to ramble and I can get distracted easily.â You laugh pitifully. âI might bore you to death from my talking.â
âI donât think so, I think you- I mean, your work is quite captivating and I donât mind rambling.âÂ
You stare at him for a second, then clear your throat, âWell, I did make a discovery with the sample I was studyingâŠâÂ
The next morning, you can not stop your mind from wandering back to your conversation with Loki. Youâve always had a different perspective of him than many others. While others saw him as cold and distant, you saw how curious he was, the remarkable intelligence he had. Every conversation you had with him, he showed genuine interest and kindness towards you.Â
However, last night, Loki showed admiration for not just your work but for you as a person. In the dark lab, the conversation felt more intimate, and you made yourself more vulnerable to another person than you have for a long time.Â
But then doubt starts. What if he was simply being polite? It is hard to wrap your mind around the idea that someone like Loki could truly care about you and not judge for being overly passionate.
As you continued to walk to the lab, you heard someone call your name behind you. While turning around, you feel your heart longing for it to be Loki. But when you look back, you see your coworker John.Â
He was nice to work with. He generally completed all his research in a timely manner and he had a contagious laugh that always lifted the spirits of the lab even after tiring days. Yet, you still had to hide your disappointment with a polite smile.Â
âHello John, did you need something?âÂ
âI just wanted to say hi and see how you were doing.â His hands are in his pockets and he shows off his wide white smile. âItâs rare I get to catch you outside of the lab, I wanted to take advantage of this moment.âÂ
âOh, well Iâve just been working on my research and I have made some interesting discoveries and I-âÂ
âYou work too hard,â John interrupts. âWhat do you like to do outside of work?âÂ
You pause, while certainly your work isnât your entire life, you care deeply about your research. Does Loki think Iâm odd? âUm well, I like-âÂ
âSee this is what Iâm talking about, you gotta explore life outside of the lab.â You stare at him considering what he said.
John continues, âListen, I will be quite frank. I think you are beautiful and Iâm hoping you can take some time away from the lab and go out to dinner with me.â
âOh,â You are thrown off guard by his request. Sure John was always nice, but you never expected him to have any interest in you.Â
But maybe you should take advantage of the opportunity. It has been awhile since youâve been asked out and maybe John was right, you need to spend some time away from the lab.
You hesitate, but finally you take a deep breath, âYes, I would love to.â You force yourself to give him another smile.
âGood, thatâs what I like to hear.â John walks closer to you, instantly you feel as though your space is being invaded. âHow about tomorrow night then? Iâm excited to see you outside of this compound, see you all dressed up.â He smirks.
âAlright, sounds good.â You look away from him and quicken your pace as you continue on to the lab. Itâs good to get outside of your comfort zone, this is good for you, you keep reminding yourself.
Around the corner, Loki overhears your conversation with John.Â
Loki never liked John, he reminded him too much of Thor before he got sent to Earth. He can tell youâre uncomfortable from the way you make yourself smaller and your voice being only slightly louder than a whisper.
Loki canât stop the pang of hurt he feels when he hears you say âyes.â He knows he shouldnât feel it, that the two of you are barely even friends and you can go and date whoever you like. Still, he wishes that you did not feel pressured to agree, he wishes that he was the one to ask you first.Â
All he can hope is that John treats you well.
Loki doesnât know why he is walking past the lab. He knew you wouldnât be there tonight, that you would be busy with your date. He grimaces just thinking about it. Loki knows that he is jealous. Jealous that John gets to spend time with you, to hear you laugh.Â
But he will keep that jealousy to himself if it means you being happy.
The door is open to the lab and Loki can hear the clattering of tools. Thatâs peculiar, no one ever works this late. No one except one. Curious, Loki sticks his head through the doorway, only to find the person he least expects.Â
âJohn, what are you doing here,â Loki demands. He tried to keep his voice level. John shouldnât be here, he should have already left for your date.Â
âAh shit, Loki you scared me,â John grunts. âI had a project I needed to finish before Stark gets on my ass about it, so now Iâm stuck here.â
âShouldnât you be on your date?â Loki wonders if maybe it was canceled, that you were simply having a night in away from this imbecile man.Â
âI know it sucks, Iâll text her later telling her what happened. Sheâll understand since she can be such a workaholic freak sometimes.âÂ
Any composure Loki was then gone, he felt his fists tighten as he stared John down, âYou donât tell her that you would make it.â Lokiâs voice is just below a yell, John flinches. âAnd how dare you call her a freak, she is more dedicated to her work then anyone else here and she should be praised for it. But you,â Loki says gravelly, slowly getting closer to John. âYou feel as though you can belittle her for it. And as if you werenât wasting her time enough by asking for a date, you didnât even bother to show upâ
âListen, I was planning on showing up,â John trembles. âWork just got the best of me and I gotta stay here for the night. She wonât mind being alone, I chose a nice restaurant too.â
Alone. You are alone right now.Â
Loki realizes he needs to change that ultimately. John is a later problem, he can deal with him later. Loki quickly runs out of the room with a plan.
There you are, at a restaurant you canât afford and far more uptight than you prefer. The lighting is low, but instead of feeling relaxed like when you turn down the lights in the lab, you just feel anxiety.
John hasnât arrived yet. Your leg is bouncing up and down, as you try to calmly look for him. To see if he is lurking in any of the shadows.Â
You had left work early today, well early for you, to have time to get ready. You searched through your closet trying to find something acceptable for the date (eventually you found an old pencil dress you had bought for a grad school reception) and pulled your hair up into a tight updo.Â
As you sat at your table, you continued to watch more couples sit down and their orders be taken. You check your phone, he is 20 minutes late. Well that it isnât too late I guess, maybe I was just too early.Â
And so you continue to wait. You want for a man you donât even care for and who likely doesnât care about you simply because he made you uncomfortable. He made you feel as though he was your only option.
But then you see a man weaving through the crowd, mumbling quick apologies. Was John always so tall?Â
Loki. Loki came.
As he gets closer, you can see his raven black hair is a mess with curls in all different directions. He is wearing a white button down with slacks and a blazer. Such a formal outfit looks natural on him.
âIâm so sorry,â Loki says as he sits down across from you. âI hope you didnât have to wait too long.â
âLoki, what are you doing here? Iâm supposed to be,â he cuts you off.
âSlight change of plans, you came here to have dinner with your date. Only the date has changed, simply as that.â Loki settles into his seat and starts looking at the menu as though there was nothing odd about the situation.
âLoki, you canât be serious,â you sigh. âListen, John is going to be here any moment, this isnât funny.â God, you are so tired of this day. You just want to go home and be by yourself. Screw going outside of your comfort zone.Â
âI am being serious.â Loki looks directly at you. For a moment, you wish to look away, but you canât help staring at his blue eyes. âUnlike that idiot man who originally was going to be here, Iâll admit he was clever to ask you out, I should have done it first. But he was always just going to take advantage of your time whether he came or not.â
You froze, your mind could not comprehend what Loki just said to you. You should ask about why John isnât here. But all thoughts and questions are just about Loki. âWhat do you mean you should have done it first?â
âExactly what it sounds like, I wished I asked you to go on a date with me first.â He leans forward. âWhen I am in the same room as you, I am constantly astonished by you. The way you speak with such passion,â he smiles sadly. âThe way you are always kind to me, I donât deserve your kindness. I think thatâs the reason why Iâve avoided asking you to spend more time with me. Itâs silly though because then I just ended up always walking by the lab late at night, hoping to catch a glimpse of you.â
âAnd I was always there.â You give him a soft smile. âI think you are too hard on yourself, all the kindness Iâve shown you, you deserve. Just look at what youâve done for me tonight. You showed up. If anything I donât deserve your kindness, I shouldnât be surprised John didnât show up-â
âYouâre wrong,â he laughs softly. âMaybe we are both too hard on ourselves. All I know is that you are an intelligent, thoughtful, and beautiful woman.â You feel your cheeks get warm and try to resist a smile. âI just hope I can be good company for the night.â Loki gives you a shy smile, only now you realize that he is just as nervous as you about making a good impression.
You take his hand resting on the table into yours and give him a gentle squeeze, âI know you will be more than good company.â
You and Loki are walking side-by-side, your arms occasionally lightly touching each other. After you shivered when a particularly cool breeze passed by, Loki gave you his jacket. The sidewalk was mostly dark except for the shine of the lamps and the moon.
The walk back to your apartment took much longer than it should have, but you didnât care. If the two of you took the wrong corner a couple of times, so be it. During your dinner, the two of you talked and laughed the entire time. But now you are walking in a comfortable silence just feeling comforted by the otherâs presence.Â
Eventually though, all good things come to an end and you reach the entrance of your apartment building.
You look up at him and break the silence, âThis is where I live.âÂ
âOh, I see,â Loki says quietly. âIâm glad I could get you home safely.â
You smile, âIâm glad too. Thank you, not just for walking me home, but for everything. I truly enjoyed the evening with you. I think it all worked out better than I could have imagined.â
Loki nods his head gently, the corner of his mouth raising slightly. You see him rock on the heels of his feet. Slowly, the two of you move closer together. Loki leans down, staring at your lips, but eventually his lips land on your cheek giving you an affectionate peck.Â
You canât help, but laugh.Â
Loki looks at you puzzled, âWhat is it?âÂ
âOh, nothing.â you say before rising to stand on your tiptoes and catch his mouth with your lips. For a moment, he stands there shocked, but eventually relaxes. His hands gently hold the side of your face.Â
When you break apart, he rests his forehead against yours. He tries to hold back a boyish laugh, but once you start to laugh again with him, he canât resist it anymore; the happiness he feels.
You donât know how long it takes for you to separate from him, occasionally one of you giggles under your breath. Eventually, you walk to the door of your apartment building with an extra skip in your step.
âIâm keeping your jacket,â you smile coyly. âYou can get back eventually, as long as you take me out on another date.âÂ
âDeal.â

A/N: Welcome back everyone. Hope you all had a happy holiday(s). Lots of interesting conversations in this chapter and setting up a (hopefully) interesting journey for these characters.
[ Previous Part | Masterlist | AO3 ]
The sun had only started to emerge when Loki decided to visit the downtown of New Asgard. He knew someone was watching him as he walked down the cobblestone path covered by overgrown grass. There was no point in glancing back and he knew it was you following him.
It had only been a few days since the two of you arrived in New Asgard. For most of that time, he stayed in Thor's house only adventuring as far as the garden. Today, Loki decided it was time to see more of what was supposed to be his new home. He knew there were whispers among the city about his arrival.Â
Loki had assumed that his visit was early enough that most of the city would still be asleep and the streets would all be empty, giving him the chance to explore without the staring gazes of others. What he didnât account for was you knowing that he would be up so early.Â
Did this woman sneak a tracker on me in the middle of the night? He wasnât sure he could ever get used to your ever-existing presence, but for now he continued on,
As Loki continued to walk through the town, he heard footsteps approaching him. At first he assumed it was you, but as he turned around he was greeted by a different presence, âValkyrie, I'm surprised to see you wake this early,â Loki said quietly.
âI could say the same to you Prince Loki. I haven't seen you explore at all since you and your Agent arrived,â Valkyrie said as she continued to walk to Lokiâs side and smiled at him. âSheâs quite pretty isnât she.âÂ
Loki rolled his eyes, âDonât you already have a lover. I donât think she would be interested anyway, she is taking her job of observing me far too seriously.â Loki looked around him trying to find where you were hiding.
âDonât underestimate me Loki, I could seduce her if I wanted to,â Valkyrie laughs to herself, âBut youâre right. I do already have plenty of lovers that need my attention. That and I have a city to rule.â
âYes, I sure hope your lovers donât distract you from your work.â
âIâm fully capable of multitasking.â She signaled to Loki to follow her âTell me what do you think of this city, Prince Loki.â
Loki looked closer at the buildings, many of which still had not turned their lights on yet. People seemed to be settling into their homes and building their new lives. There arenât many businesses in New Asgard, or at least not as many as there were on Asgard. It was becoming a functional city and even some novelties were appearing, namely the new library featuring both Midgardian books and the copies of Asgardian books that were managed to be saved.Â
âYou are doing a good job my King, the Asgardians deserve a new home and you are providing them a beautiful one,â Loki earnestly said.Â
âThereâs lots of work to be done Loki.â Valkyrie smiles softly, âBut I do appreciate the sentiment, especially from you.â
Loki tensed. âAnd why do you need my opinion?â
âBecause you are a Prince, it was your home too that is now gone,â Valkyrie asserted.Â
Loki stopped walking and Valkyrie looked back towards him. âNo matter how many times you call me a Prince, it doesnât make me one. Not anymore.â Loki wasn't sure if he was ever truly a Prince of Asgard. If anything, he was the heir to Jotunheim. Thor was the only Prince that Asgard ever seemed to need.
âThese will always be your people, Loki. I know what itâs like to try and abandon them to create a new life. But I was miserable, I didnât feel like myself again till I helped fight during Ragnarok. I know you felt a similar way. You could have run away and left them to die, but you didnât. You felt good fighting for your people and can continue to serve them now.â
âI think you put too much faith in me,â he said gravelly.
âMaybe,â Valkyrie shrugged. âBut I also know you want to be more than the villain in stories. This can be a new start for you and your relationship with the people of Asgard, just like me.â
Loki turned away and began walking back to Thorâs house. âGoodbye Valkyrie,â he murmured.Â
Mission Report for Director Nick Fury
Loki Laufeyson isâŠ
You've been sitting at the kitchen table for over an hour, desperately trying to find the words for your mission report.Â
This morning you heard Loki get up, having always been a light sleeper. It was useful for the job though, as it helped you stay aware of his every move. That's all how all your time has been spent in New Asgard: listening and waiting for Loki to make his move.
For the most part, Loki kept to himself. The change of routine today, made you assume that it was the start of some malicious plan. But when you followed him into town, he did nothing but observe the city until he had a conversation with the King of New Asgard, Valkyrie.Â
Having no more time to procrastinate on your mission report, you decided to give Loki some space for a few hours. As you stared at the blank page on your laptop, you heard the door to the house creak open soon followed by a boisterous voice.
âSoon we shall need a celebration, but for now-â Thor entered the kitchen, the large smile on his face somehow grew bigger. âHello our dear Lady, how is your day so far?â Following behind him is Korg, a tall rock-made creature with an ironically soft disposition.Â
âHello Thor,â you smile back at him. âMy day has been well though now Iâm just trying to get my mission report for Fury done.â
âHow is your mission going so far? Are you taking time to explore and enjoy the city like I suggested?â Thor asked.
You sighed, âMy work is my top priority Thor, I havenât had much time to explore. But I will eventually, I promise.â
âMy brother has been too difficult to work with, has he? Because I promise, I know he wants to change and work with-â
You cut him off, âHe hasnât been too much trouble. Heâs just been⊠distant, I guess. Itâs hard to fully know heâs goals and ambitions when he always tries to keep to himself.â Thor frowns at first, but then he slowly smiles again.Â
âWell you must talk to him then! Loki has been reclusive, yes. But I swear that if you try to reach out to him, you can see him for who he truly is.â
You stay quiet for a moment, before Korg speaks up. âWe just saw him, he was looking over the water on the edge of the hill.â
You looked at Thor's hopeful gaze as he anticipated your response. âI'm hoping you're right, Thor,â you said as you stood from your chair.
Loki was far away enough from the city that all he could hear was the crashing of the waves below him and the calm wind moving through the tall green grass.
After this morning running into Valkyrie, he needed time to himself. Instead of going back to the house, he found this spot. A place where he had a birds eye view of the water, but was still surrounded by the rugged mountains.Â
âIt's beautiful here,â you interrupt his thoughts.Â
âIt's nothing like what Asgard was.â
âIt was glorious wasn't it,â You said softly as you walked up next to him. The proximity makes him uncomfortable. âI'd never been to Asgard, you'd have to describe to me what it was like.â
âIt was,â Loki quietly looked down. âBut it doesnât matter now that itâs gone, we simply have to move on.â
âHow do you plan to move on Loki?â What are your goals here on Earth?â It came out more accusatory than you meant, but you couldnât resist. You know so little about this man that you are required to watch for most of the day.Â
âTrust me, I am not going anywhere and I already tried world domination. Now if youâll leave me be.â Loki said as he walked back towards the city.
âThere is another title you are referred to as Mischief. God of Lies, is that correct?â
Loki paused. You were correct, there are many names referring to Loki. Many of the names now have negative connotations even if they just started as a descriptor. But the God of Lies title was always said with malice.Â
âWell youâve created a problem, see, I could admit to being the God of Lies but that could be a lie or I could say Iâm not and that could also be a lie. No matter what, you are not closer to the truth.â
But to Lokiâs surprise, you laughed. âMaybe, but here's the thing, Loki.â You walked closer to him. âBut I still like to know more about you, if you could-â you think to yourself for a moment. âIf you would talk to me, Iâd greatly appreciate it. I hear so many different stories about you.â
âAnd which ones do you think are the most accurate?â Loki asked, looking directly towards you.
âI donât think any of them are fully accurate, some yes, have more truth to them. But I want to have my own perspective on who you are. I think thatâs how Iâve lasted so long as a SHIELD agent,â You laugh quietly. âIt gets me in trouble often, especially with Fury, but I know I need to trust my instincts and not assume everyone around me has the right answer. I need to discover for myself.â
âFury certainly made an interesting choice sending you here.â
âOh absolutely, do you know what he said to be when he assigned me this mission? âLoki annoys the hell out of me and so do you,â In his mind itâs the perfect match I guess.â You try to hold in your laugh, but Loki just scoffed.Â
You continue, âWeâre stuck with each other for who knows how long, Loki. We have to find a way to make it work.â You look up at him, focusing on the sharp angles of his face.Â
âI suppose so,â Loki begrudged.Â
After a few moments of silence, the two of you walk back to the house. You excuse yourself to work on your mission report and Loki goes upstairs to his room. He closes the door softly behind him and lays on his bed, his hands covering his eyes. âNorns, this woman will be the death of me.â
At the same time, on a far away planet called Chitauri Prime.Â
The Chitauri, tall gray monstrous creatures, are yelling at one another. In months since they lost their army leader, Thanos, they argued back and forth on how to move forward as species.Â
âWe must continue to fight!â one Chitauri yells. âWe will avenge our leader and kill anyone who ruined his plan!â
âOur army is weak now and there are too many that were against Thanos!â another yells. âWe can not rush into battle, we have to be strategic about our first attack without our leader.â
âThen we will get a new leader.â Soon everyone turned to the older Chitauri, one who stopped fighting battles many years before Thanos was killed. âThere is an option, one that we have not been ready for, but now it is time.â
Chitauri looked at each other, confused by what this elder was saying, but he continued, âWe will have our leader, he is known as Warlord, he ruthlessness and brutally made us put him into hibernation. But we always knew there would be a time where he would need to fill a role no one else can.â The elder Chitauri walked up the stone steps to the platform, the Chitauri all stared up at him.
âAnd I know exactly where our first war will be. The downfall of Thanos is all due to one man, the dark prince of Asgard. He was the one that failed us, he is the reason Thanos never got the infinity stones. We were promised Earth if we helped Loki.â The Chitauri cheered, captivated by his speech.
âWe will kill Loki and destroy Earth, to avenge our leader and bring honor back to our species.â

A/N: Hello again! Our hero and heroine finally encounter during this chapter. Hope you enjoy and let me know any hopes for this series.
[ Previous Part | Masterlist | AO3 ]
You are qualified for this, hopefully.
As you pack up your apartment - most of it going to storage and the rest being tightly packed into two suitcases - you try to remember when you last had a mission this complex or important. Certainly not since SHIELD âcollapsedâ and reformed in secret. Since then, youâve only been doing work that the newbies used to do.Â
All you've had to deal with lately is misbehaving teens and wannabe mad scientists around New York. Now you are on your way to Norway, to meet up with a supernatural being that you have no idea what the extent of their powers are. Maybe that would be a good way to start a conversation with Loki. Though you question if talking to him is even a good idea.
Youâve been wanting a true mission again. But as you think about your past missions, nothing seems to compare to this one. Yes, past missions have been both physically and emotionally demanding, but how do you ensure a God does not try to take over the Earth again?Â
You also never felt so alone on a mission before. You used to have friends, well fellow agents, at SHIELD.Â
But it doesnât matter. Youâve done plenty of work on your work. You can handle this, you just have to. Today you are leaving for New Asgard.
Fury will be upset that you're running late - you told yourself you would start packing early, but waited till the last minute as usual - but it doesnât matter. You are taking a jet the Avengers have, and, besides the pilot, it will only be you and Fury on the flight. Fury can wait a couple of extra hours, and maybe he will feel the pilot deserves a raise.Â
Being late is the nice thing to do in this situation.
There is still daylight by the time you arrive at the Avengers Compound. Youâve only been there once or twice before while getting some Stark technology for a few missions. During those visits, you barely even got to enter the building. You were simply handed off the supplies and told to leave.Â
Itâs far larger than most buildings in New York. As you walk through the hallways while escorted by a compound worker, you are amazed by the tall ceilings with windows that cover entire walls letting the sunshine make the inside of the compound seem like it's glowing.Â
Despite assuming that Tony Stark has an entire workshop for himself, you seem to find his projects everywhere. Plenty of them are still in the development stage with exposed wires all looping around each other.  If I touch them will they explode or offer to bring me coffee?
Eventually, you are led into a room that much more resembles a typical family living room with large couches and chairs, a TV and gaming console, and plenty of books gathered on the coffee table. There is a hallway that leads to a kitchen and dining room, and doors that you assume lead to the Avenger's bedrooms.Â
You are told that Fury will be with you soon and as the compound worker walks away, you immediately collapse onto one of the couches. You curse at yourself for getting so out of shape, but then again, you packed as much as you could into your suitcases.Â
Lying on the couch, you stare up at the ceiling daydreaming about what Norway might be like. Maybe youâll get back into shape by training in the forests like an ancient warrior. Maybe youâll catch up on your reading by the docks. Maybe youâll finally get that cat you wanted.
Eventually, you hear footsteps coming into the room.
âWell glad you are finally ready to go, Fury,â you joke, your eyes still staring up at the ceiling, âIâve been waiting on your ass all day.â
âVery funny, Agent,â Fury flatly says, âGet up it isnât nap time, you can sleep on the jet.â
âOh but this couch is very comfortable and I-â You turn your head towards Fury and realize he is not alone.
Loki is here.
There, right there, standing behind Fury is Loki.Â
He doesnât look exactly as you expected. You imagined he always wore his dark armor with the gold-horned helmet. Maybe his eyes would glow and dark clouds would follow them.Â
But as you stare at him, you realize he looks like a normal human.Â
Well, maybe not entirely normal as even without his golden helmet, he towers over Fury. But he isnât wearing his armor, instead, a dark gray lapel neck coat with slacks. His dark hair curls as it reaches his neck. When you finally look into his blue-green eyes, you realize there is an utter lack of emotion on his face.
He doesnât seem to care at all that you are making eye contact with him. Loki just stares back. Â
You clear your throat, then look away from Loki and back towards Fury, âI thought it would just be the two of us. I assumed, uh, Loki was already in New Asgard?âÂ
You felt slightly worried that saying his name out loud would cause a curse to be placed upon you, but a glance shows that he doesnât seem to care at all that you mentioned him.
âYou assumed wrong," Fury says "About both things Agent. Loki is clearly not already in Asgard and I'm not coming with you."
You are staring out the small window in the jet while Loki sits across from you, his long legs are crossed. Your hand holding your face covering it slightly from Lokiâs view.
Loki knows you werenât expecting to meet him so soon. You tried to convince Fury to join the flight to New Asgard, but he just kept on reminding you that this was your job.Â
You are being forced to be with him.Â
Well, Loki didnât have much of a choice either. Only two days ago, he was told he could join his brother in New Asgard. However, there was a catch. The Avengers apparently asked Fury to find someone to keep an eye on him.Â
âWhy? Thor will be there. I assure you if he feels I am being too malicious, he will tell you,â Loki started to feel more uncomfortable in his seat.Â
Clint leans back in his chair, crossing his arms âListen, Thor is already busy. Heâs helping Valkyrie run New Asgard and he also has some business with the Guardians.â
âIâm assuming you and the rest of your Avengers are too busy too. So I am still a prisoner, but just in New Asgard.â
âYouâre not going to be a prisoner Loki, you are going to have more freedom, more than you might deserve,â Loki tenses âThe agent is just ensuring that you are going to try and do good. They are very qualifiedâÂ
Qualified. Thatâs all he got to learn about you. Loki had to meet you - the person who will now follow him around like a lost puppy - with almost no expectations. You got an entire report from Fury and the Avengers all about him, or at least what they want you to know about him. That he is dangerous and can not be trusted.Â
But now he is looking at you, while you try to avoid him. Before, you assumed that you could watch him from a distance and mostly keep to yourself. But now, you realize how silly of an idea that was. It is inevitable that you will be spending most of your time for the foreseeable future with the dark god.Â
This is your mission, and you will take it seriously. While it might be off to a rough start, it will improve. Or at least it needs to if you ever want to get back on the field doing legitimate work. There are some things you don't miss about being a more active SHIELD agent, things that are too hard to think about. But you miss feeling valuable far more.Â
Out of the corner of your eye, you notice Loki looking away from you and is now staring out towards his window.Â
When you were younger, you loved flying on planes. Being among the clouds was like no other experience. The fact that humans discovered a way to fly like birds made you feel powerful. Seeing how small even mountains were below you made you realize how much of the universe, and new perspectives there are to see. You wonder what being on a jet is like for Loki; surely none of this is interesting to him. But you canât really judge someone who has seen multiple realms for not being impressed by human aircraft.
But it doesnât matter what Loki thinks. You finally look directly towards him. It is time to break the ice and make it clear to Loki that you are in charge.
âWe have about an hour left of our flight,â you said. âWhen we land, Thor will be there to meet us and show us the residence weâll be staying at.â
âSo I've heard,â Loki said, glancing at you for a second, then looking back towards the window. It's the first time youâve truly gotten to hear his voice, low and smooth like silk. But his voice signals to you that he is disinterested.Â
âYes, well I just wanted to ensure that you were aware of the plans. I want everything to go smoothly,â you said while trying to sit up a little straighter.Â
He laughs sardonically, âPeople don't usually come to me when they want their plans to go  smoothly.â Â
âNonetheless, I need you to cooperate with me. If you stay out of trouble in New Asgard and report to me about your actions, then I shall not bother you.âÂ
âWhat else would you like?â Loki turns back towards you and leans forward. âWould you like to have a leash on me? Have a camera in my room, or do I even have the honor of having my own room? Should I consult you on everything I wish to say before I say it? Whisper it into your ear and get your approval.â
You feel yourself wanting to shiver. You try to appear stoic in front of Loki, but ultimately your body just becomes tense and stiff.
âI do not plan on treating you like a wild beast, I am here to do my job,â you said sternly. âWhether or not you like it, I am here to stay and you will respect it.â
âYou think you should have my respect,â Loki laughs again âAnd why should a Prince bow down to you, Agent?â
âBecause Iâm the one here actually trying to keep my planet and people safe,  Prince.  Do us both a favor and stay out of trouble.â
You stare at each other before Loki eventually rests back in his seat, crossing his arms, and you let out a sigh.Â
God, how will we not kill each other before we even arrive in New Asgard.
Being in New Asgard is odd.
These are the people Loki has spent his entire life around, the people who made him miserable. For years, they would laugh at him and never care to listen to him. It only got worse when Asgard learned of his true heritage and his actions on Midgard. They could justify Loki being the villain in their stories.
After Ragnarok, they don't view him as much of a threat anymore, but there is still a distrust there. A lingering dislike for him. Maybe if I saved our home, and didn't allow so many of us to die, they could accept me.
It didnât help that his brother Thor was the clear golden hero of Asgard. It didnât take long for Thor to become beloved by anyone he met. He just had to show them his wide smile and make them laugh, and anyone would become willing to follow him.
Loki saw that it was the same for you. As the two of you exited the jet, Thor was there to greet you like you said.
âMy Lady is a pleasure to have you here, I hope you will enjoy yourself. Itâs quite beautiful here, though I do admit the smell of fish from the docks can linger.â
You giggle, âThank you, Thor, Iâm sure I will get used to the smell, Iâve worked in worse places before.â
Afterward, Thor led you both to what is now their new home. On the side of a small mountain, is a wooden house surrounded by green grass and blooming flowers. It is the house where Thor and Valkyrie, the new King of Asgard, stay along with any guests they accumulate
For the first time in hours, Loki can feel somewhat alone again as he sits down on his bed. He can hear the wind blowing outside his window, the only interruption to his thoughts. But Loki knows he is not entirely alone as your bedroom is right across from his and Thorâs is just down the hallway.
You are so peculiar to him, a puzzle he can not solve. He doesnât understand your intention for being here. Maybe you simply hate him and and to torture him while he is here. Be a pebble in his shoe while he is trying to rebuild his life here.
Loki then hears a knock at his door followed by Thor walking into his room.
âOf course, Thor. Come right in.â Loki rolls his eyes.Â
âExcuse me brother for the intrusion, but I wanted to see you. I felt as though we hadnât been able to talk much since you arrived.â Thor closes the door behind him and walks towards Loki.
âAh yes, well I believe our lovely Agent wanted to investigate your home as soon as possible to ensure there is no way for me to sneak past her watch.â  Norns, there is truly no way Iâll be able to avoid her.
âThis is now your home too Loki. The Agent just wants to do a thorough job, certainly you can respect that. She doesnât rush through tasks like me.â Thor smiles, and Loki feels the corner of his mouth rise ever so slightly. âShe is a nice Lady, and I have to say she is pretty.â
âBrother donât you have a beloved, that Midgardian scientist?âÂ
âItâsâŠcomplicated.â Thor looks away, becoming visibly uncomfortable.
âWell then maybe you should court the Agent instead,â Loki said. It could be a good distraction to keep you away from him, Loki thinks to himself.
âNo, I donât think so brother,â Thor pauses. âI really am happy that you are here Loki. I know you want to be good. Iâve seen it myself. We can work together, I always believed we could conquer the nine realms together,â Thor laughs to himself.
Loki doesnât know how to respond. Thatâs the whole reason he came here, isnât it? To be good? To be a hero with Thor? But now, he is not so sure that is possible. He is the  God of Mischief.  Is it truly possible for someone like him to change and be better?Â
âThank you, brother,â Loki said without being able to look up at his brother.Â
Thor wishes him a good night and then leaves him.
Soon he will be all alone again, forever, to do whatever he wants. Deciding what to do⊠well that will be a challenge for another day.

A/N: Hello! This is a new series I've been working on and I'm excited to finally be publishing it. This is just the first chapter, so I hope you stick around to see the full story.
[ Masterlist | AO3 ]
Every Asgardian knew the stories of the land that was now supposed to be their home. Many celebrations that were full of food and wine also included the Allfather Odin reminding them of the battle in a small village on Midgard called TĂžnsberg. The audience would shiver, their shoulders tense as Odin described the land being frozen over by the Frost Giants and their malicious leader, King Laufey; the monsters with blood red eyes and physiques that tower over Asgardians.
The story was always told the same way, with Odin leading the Asgardian army into battle without fear. The War eventually ended in the Frost Giants own realm Jotunheim. But the Midgardian village that eventually grew into a city was still remembered as years later, Odin would ask for the Asgardian worshippers to protect the Tesseract.
At the end of the story, Odin would yell âAsgard will always prevail,â and the crowds would cheer as loud as they could and some would chant the phrase before filling their drinks once more.
Now, their home that they had for centuries was gone. The prophesized apocalypse, Ragnarok, had happened. The Asgardians had needed refuge and their new King Valkyrie, with the advice from the formerly Crown Prince Thor, decided the city from their stories could be their new home. The Asgardians knew there would be no grand celebrations for a long time.Â
However, most Asgardians were simply grateful to have a chance to continue their lives. Helaâs takeover of Asgard caused many lives to be lost. But their challenges were not over yet, as Thanos had come for the Tesseract.Â
Thanos originally went for another infinity stone on a planet called Xander. But decided against it as rumors his daughters Gamora and Nebula knew of his plans stopped him. Little did he know that his daughters and their friends knew of his new plan to go after the Tesseract. The Guardians of the Galaxy, as they referred to themselves as, followed him. With the help of the Nova Corp and some Ravagers, they were able to fight Thanos. The new legend says Nebula performed the final attack, killing The Mad Titan.  Â
Not every Asgardian survived the Thanos attack. Most were able to escape quickly in a smaller ship with Valkyrie and Korg. Some decided to stay behind and fight. To ensure Asgard had a future.Â
Everyday since the Asgardians arrived on Midgard three months ago and renamed the city of TĂžnsberg to New Asgard, the younger prince of Asgard wondered if it would be the day he was sent to a different realm or was executed.Â
Loki's last visit to Midgard resulted in a strange wizard putting him in a strange portal where he fell for thirty minutes while Thor was told to take Loki from Earth. Thor easily agreed that his brother was a threat to Earth. The Battle of New York was far from forgotten.
But, now Thor was telling anyone who would listen that Loki had changed and was a hero for the Asgardians. The Avengers did not trust this supposed change of heart and decided to lock up Loki in the Avengers Compound until they decided what they would do with him. Loki did not put up a fight. What was the point?
Thor attempted to make his brother's living situation as comfortable as possible, requesting that he was not put in a cell but rather an apartment like the ones the other Avengers lived in; Tony Stark's AI FRIDAY, ensuring tight security.Â
During the months living in the compound, Loki was questioned on a regular basis, mostly by the Avengers but occasionally by military and government officials. But ultimately, everyone agreed that it was up to the Avengers to make the final decision.Â
âWhy are you here Loki? Planning another massacre in an attempt to be some King? I wanna know what tricks you got up your sleeve this time cause the mind stuff was really impressive but you donât seem like the person to enjoy repeating tricks?â asked Clint Barton, a man Loki remembers well. He was always one of the harshest interviewers and for understandable reasons.Â
The two men are sitting across from each other at a table in Lokiâs temporary apartment. Unlike the others, Loki has not been able to add any personal touches. The walls are plain and all the tabletops bare.Â
âI do not plan on conquering. My return to your planet is simply because it is where my brother and our people are,â Loki responds. He sounded casual and almost bored, as if this was a phrase he repeated many times.Â
Most of his life, Asgard gave him no attention except when he was causing tricks on them. Why would they when they could instead idolize Thor, the golden prince. Now he is constantly trying to convince others that he is a part of Asgard. That he is wanted by the Asgardians. Loki knew it was a lie, but the silvertongue always knew how to lie.Â
âYour people? The people who did not want you to become their king so you decided it would be fun to destroy Earth,â Clint almost laughs.
âFun is not how I would describe my past experience here.âÂ
The dark haired God never once broke eye contact with Clint as he said âThere is much you donât know about how that attack came to be. I was not the main person who lost that day.âÂ
Clint leaned back in his chair, sighing. The details given by Loki about his side of the Battle of New York always felt incomplete. He needed to hold back. The truth of those events and what he experienced because of that Mad Titan is something the Avengers didnât need to know about.
Knowing it was a lost cause, Clint decided to move on.Â
âNew Asgard is starting to settle down. People are getting used to the situation, more homes are being built. They are starting work and the children are taking lessons again,â Clint offers.
âSo Iâve heard.âÂ
âYou helped Asgardians escape Ragnarok, " he leaned against the table, "You think you could create a new life?â
Loki only nodded.
Mission Assignment Update: Report to Nick Fury at Base 018
You groan as you put your phone back on the nightstand. It was only 6am, but of course the bastard Fury didnât care that you only got to your apartment past midnight after finishing your latest mission.
It wasnât an exciting one. There was a rumor that a âdangerous groupâ in New Jersey was developing technology that could hack anyone including Tony Stark himself.Â
And of course like always it was nothing. Just a group of grad students who got pretentious about some of the programs were developing and exaggerated the truth to some of their friends.
Yet, SHIELD still never wanted to take any risks so you were the ever so lucky agent that had to investigate then write a riveting report about how it was nothing.
The notification didnât include a meeting time, meaning that Fury wants you to be there as soon as possible and no matter what time you arrive, he will complain about you being late.Â
Your eyelids still feel heavy as you will yourself to get out of bed. As you slowly gain consciousness you wonder why you even have to go to Fury for your mission assignment. Most of the time you are messaged the directions of the missions and complete it all on your own.Â
Eventually you manage to get dressed and run out of your apartment to head to the SHIELD base. It wasnât a very big one, though most of the facilities werenât anymore. SHIELD didnât have much now after the Hydra infiltration. Many resources were gone and so were many agents.Â
This base was hidden in plain sight. It was just another skyscraper in New York full of many businesses that each rented a couple floors. As far as the other workers in the building knew, âSecure and Shield Surveillanceâ was a small technology company that possibly made security cameras or computer protection software.Â
No one ever really cared enough to investigate further.
You enter the building and take the elevator to the 8th floor. When the doors open and there you are greeted by the hostile stare of the secretary, Bernadette who has half-moon glasses and dresses as though she is working in the 1950s. Her gray hair is in its usual tight updo that never allows any piece of hair to move from its assigned position.Â
âWell look who decided to grace us with her presence today.âÂ
Bernadette had been a part of SHIELD longer than anyone else (you didnât know how long because no one would ever risk asking her age). You sometimes wondered if she was always a secretary or if her past jobs were more like yours.Â
All you did know was Bernadette believed that SHIELD would be best run if everyone obeyed orders and that she hated you because you always did the exact opposite.
You roll your eyes and respond, âAlways nice seeing you too. If I knew you missed me so much I would have visited more often.âÂ
âHow generous.â Bernadette returns to her work, attempting to ignore you still being in the room.Â
âI know, when I die Iâll be treated like a saint,â you smile to yourself, knowing that you probably annoyed her enough that she will be irritated for the rest of the day.Â
She continues to type on her computer, attempting to maintain a bored face, but you are still pleased because you can see the slight furrow in her brow and her frown deepen. âDirector Fury is waiting in his office. A reminder on basic manners dear, donât leave your boss waiting.â
âDidnât plan on it Bernadette, Iâm always polite.â You are already walking down the hall when you respond, while you attempt to hold your small laugh.
As you enter the office, you see Fury but there was another figure with him. Steve Rogers. Youâve met before many times albeit the encounters were usually very short.Â
He has been involved with SHIELD for many years and after the infiltration was revealed, it was he who heavily promoted the idea of reforming SHIELD in hopes of maintaining its legacy. However, he was still most committed to the Avengers and most SHIELD operations were handled by others.Â
But now the two men are standing around Furyâs desk, staring at you while you still stand in the doorway.Â
âDirector, Captain, I hope you plan on explaining to me why we are all here.âÂ
Fury steps forward towards you, his arms crossed, âAgent, I assumed you would know from the dispatch that we need to talk about your new mission.âÂ
âYes, message that provided no details except to meet you here which we both know is irregular. We both donât have time for this and I assume your other guest, who was not even mentioned on my invitation, doesnât either.âÂ
Steve looks apologetic as he says âI apologize that I caught you off guard, that wasnât my intention.âÂ
âIt was absolutely my intention. Why are you complaining so much? I thought you loved surprises and it's really a shame we donât see each other more often,â Fury interrupts.
You force yourself to laugh, âNot my fault you didnât wanna go on a coffee date with me,â you close the door behind you, fully entering Furyâs office âCaptain, are you willing to finally tell me about this mission?â
Steve sighs and sits down in the chair beside the desk, âAs you know Thor has brought the Asgardians here to Earth, theyâve been rebuilding their home in Norway.âÂ
You nod. Asgardâs destruction and refuge wasnât unknown. You heard about some missions of agents being sent to deliver resources and technology to the Asgardians, in an attempt to help them adapt to their new lifestyle.Â
But doesnât explain why Fury and Steve, themselves need to personally explain your mission to you.
Steve continues, âThor also brought some of his companions with him,â he pauses, âIncluding his brother Loki.â
You feel your heart drop to your stomach and breaths stop.Â
Loki is back on Earth? It has been years since the attack on New York, but no one has forgotten it. At one moment you are sparring with your fellow SHIELD trainees, placing bets on who was going to get assigned a real mission first, then in the next moment it doesnât matter. SHIELDs Helicarrier was attacked and the perpetrator had escaped.
Everything you learn about their menacing leader was after the attack. SHIELD was able to collect some footage of the tall dark god. The footage was blurry, but yet you can still see the God enjoying himself. The attack was no accident.Â
âYou let Loki back on Earth? The Asgardians have been on Earth for months, are you trying to tell me youâve allowed him to be here the whole time. What the fu-â
âOur reasons for allowing him to be here are complicated, Agent. Please try to stay quiet and listen.â Fury starts sounding more and more exhausted, whether by you or the entire situation is debatable.Â
Steve looks at Fury then back at you, âWhen we saw Loki had arrived with Thor, we immediately put him in custody. Thor was upset with this decision and tried to explain to us that- well he believes his brother is good now.â
Thor believes his brother is good?
Fury explains, âLoki apparently did some hero shit when they were escaping Asgard and now Thor believes that his little dream of fighting alongside his brother is possible.âÂ
The story they are telling you feels like a dream. Or maybe this is a nightmare. It is too unbelievable to be real.
âDo you believe that? This is ridiculous-â
You are interrupted again by Fury âWhat did I say about you saying quiet and listening. We havenât even gotten to the best part yet.âÂ
âWe decided to investigate Thorâs claims about his brother. We needed to decide what to do with Loki and we finally came to a conclusion,â Steve stares at me âLoki is moving to New Asgard.âÂ
Steve continues, âNew Asgard is where Thor is and maybe eventually after a while, he might even help the Avengers out. This is a dangerous move we know, but itâs one we believe in,â he pauses. âI believe we can give him a second chance.âÂ
Steve Rogers, or Captain America as the world knew he always wanted to do the right thing. To believe there is still good in the world even if it felt like it was all following apart.Â
And somehow he could even see good in Loki.
You are lost in your thoughts when Fury's voice sneaks into your head. âThis is where you come in, Agent.âÂ
Your head whips around to stare at Fury, your mouth slightly agape. During this meeting, you had become so distracted by this absurd story that you forgot the original reason for you being here. Â
"Thor promises to keep an eye on his brother, but we want to be safe," Steve said, "Fury recommended you for the job.âÂ
You stare at Fury. He was always a calculated manÂ
"Why did you choose me for this mission?"
"Loki annoys the hell out of me and so do you,â Fury shugs.Â
âHa, very funny,â you say completely expressionless.Â
This whole situation was ridiculous.Â
But, maybe it was time for a challenge. For years now, every mission youâve received always felt the same and never truly needed a SHIELD agent to handle it.Â
âSo, youâre telling me my new mission is to babysit a God?â They both nod cautiously. You pause, making sure you have made up your mind, âSo when do I start?â

Chapter 2: Loathing
Mission briefings at the Compound happened multiple times a week.
The Avengers would gather together in a conference room with windows on every wall except for one. In the center of the room was a large table with stacks of paper and multiple coffee mugs.Â
One of them would give out assignments, tell everyone who their teams will be, Tony would talk about something completely unrelated to the missions, and then everyone would leave.
This wasnât something you were used to, well at least recently.Â
Before you went solo, you would have to attend multiple mission briefings a day even if you werenât going to be a part of those missions. You have to sit and listen for hours to what you were allowed and not allowed to on a mission. Everything was controlled and you had to get clearance for every choice you made on a mission. You were told it was for safety, but it was just to cover up SHIELDs lies.
Now you are back at another mission briefing this time with a new team.
To be honest, you didn't have anything against the Avengers. You've worked with some of them before including Steve and Natasha. You considered yourself to be friends with them, especially Natasha.Â
Mission briefings were always better with Natasha. You would talk about whatever show you were watching together at the time or you would try to make the other laugh while trying to stay as quiet as possible.
Despite the few fond memories, you didnât expect yourself to ever agree to working with the Avengers.
But now, you are sitting at the conference table glaring at Bucky as he glares back.
âI hope you all will give the Agent a warm welcome. If we show our appreciation for her work, maybe sheâll come back and work with us again.â You look away from Bucky and towards Steve who is giving you a small smile.Â
âDonât push your luck Cap.â You quickly respond. Natasha gently kicks your leg. They didnât know about your not so âwarm'' introduction to The Winter Soldier.Â
You knew you wouldn't be able to completely avoid bucky since he was assigned to the field team for this mission.Â
âWell, I think it's time to wrap this meeting up,â Tony says as he steps forward. He then looks at Bruce who is sitting a few seats away from you then looks at you. âTech team, first off we need a better team name. Second, let's meet in the lab in about 20 minutes.â
âTony, weâve talked about this. We donât need a team name.â Bruce responds.
âAvengers disassemble!â Tony quickly shouts as he exits the room. Steve just rolls his eyes at him.
Bucky quickly gets up from his chair and picks up his book. Before he can leave, Steve walks behind him and puts a hand on his shoulder.
âBucky. You should introduce yourself to the new Agent.â Steve looks at his friend.Â
Bucky sighs, âI already met her.â Steve gives a confused look to Bucky. âBefore the meeting.â
âAnd?â
âIt didnât go well. Thatâs it.â Bucky quickly responds as he looks down. He clearly wasnât interested in continuing this conversation.
On the other side of the room, you watch as Bucky walks out of the room. You couldnât hear their conversation, but you could tell Steve was concerned about Bucky.
âHave you met Wanda yet?â Natasha asks. She signals you to follow her.Â
You get up from your chair and walk towards Wanda Maximoff. You know her from the news and know from your own research on Hydra about how she and her twin were experimented on.
Natasha introduces you, âThis old friend of mine is going to be helping us out this week as you know. I wanted to introduce you to each other. I think you two could be good friends.â Natasha smiles.Â
âItâs nice to meet you, Agent. Thank you for agreeing to help us, I hope I'll get to know you better this week.â Wanda says as she holds out her hand.
You smile and shake her hand, âItâs nice to meet you too.â You know introducing you to Wanda is Natashaâs attempt at getting you attached to Avengers, though maybe becoming friends with Wanda wouldnât hurt you.
Natasha and Wanda offer to give you a quick tour of the compound before your meeting with the tech team. The three of you exit the room together and walk down the winding hallways.
âWill you be staying here for the week?â Wanda asks.
âNo. Iâll just go back and forth from here to my apartment.â
Wanda looks at you confused, âAre you sure you donât want to stay? The compound is pretty secluded. I imagine it takes a while to travel here.âÂ
She isnât wrong about that especially since you have to walk, but you just shrug your shoulders.
âItâs not that bad. Iâm only going to be working here for a week. It doesnât seem necessary to pack my stuff and live here for just this week only.â
Natasha and Wanda are not convinced.
The best part of working with the Avengers is all the facilities the compound has.Â
The lab you are working in has the most advanced technology in the world (you donât even know what some of it is). The lab is full of shelves with inventions and experiments. The table in the center of the room allows you to project a hologram of the blueprint Tony created for the mission.
âHey FRIDAY, could you please play us some music while we work? If this conversation gets dull, I donât want to deal with the uncomfortable silence.â Tony asks. FRIDAY then starts playing a playlist of AC/DC songs.
You laugh quietly to yourself, âHow serious do you think this threat is?â You ask as you finish setting up your laptop. Tony and Bruce set aside a desk in the lab for you to work at for the week.
âThe base is small, it wonât be hard to get into. We just have to figure out how to quickly get into their security system so we can get any information they have about other Hydra bases.â Bruce responds as he looks closely at the blueprint.
âSince the base is small, we believe they did that on purpose to seem unsuspecting.â Tony adds.
You look up from your laptop, âPerfect place to hide informationâ
âExactly.â Tony starts walking towards your desk to look at your laptop screen.
âWell lucky for you two, breaking into Hydraâs security system is something I do on a regular basis and Iâm pretty good at it. Show me what youâve got so far.â You smile. âLetâs get started.â
After a few hours of working and arguing over what music to listen to, the team determines the best plan for getting the intel. You are working on your laptop programming the code the security team will use to turn the lockdown system off and quickly collect the data.
âFU*KING HELL!â Tony yells as he steps away from his newest invention. Despite the fact that he has made multiple Iron Man suits, he still manages to hurt himself with a welding torch.
At the same time, Steve enters the room and tries to hold back a laugh.
âI assume everything is going well here.â
âOh yeah, though, we are still working on the team name though. Science Bros was an idea I messed around with for a while, but we should probably make it more gender-inclusive for the lady over there.â Tony removes his goggles to glare directly at Steve.
âI said Science Bros was a fine name! Now stop with the team name idea.â You yell from your desk.
âAny updates I should know about?â Steve asks, looking closer at Tonyâs work.
âOh, nothing much Stars and Stripes. Though we decided it might be a good idea to have one of us join the field team to help get into the system faster. It will probably be me who joins you and I'll tell FRIDAY to create a playlist for the mission.â Tony says as he searches through the cabinets for a first aid kit.
"I'll think about it, Tony. I'll talk to the field team again and decide who would be best to join them."Â
Steve walks over to your desk. His smile changes to a frown and he crosses his arms.Â
âI heard you met Bucky before the meeting.â Steve starts.
Oh.Â
Thatâs what he wants to talk about.
You shrug before turning your chair to face him.Â
Steve continues, âI know it didnât go well and sure part of it is Buckyâs fault. I just donât want you to completely judge him based on that first interaction.â
âI donât know what I did, there must be some unspoken rule Iâve already broken.â You say sarcastically. âItâs ok. Iâm not staying here for long. I donât need everyone to like me.â
âI still want the two of you to get along. I think you two have more in common than you think and could be good teammates.â
âSteve.â You look up at him reminding him that you have no plans to stay for any longer than you have to.
"I care about you both and at the very least, I want you two to be on good terms."
âI will try. I promise, but I don't know how Bucky will feel about that."
Why did Bucky get so mad?
It was only your first meeting and yet he is already trying to push you away.
Well, at least there is one thing we can agree on. You both canât wait for this week to be over and never see each other again.
Bucky was sitting on the couch in the common area. He switched his book with a tablet to watch a movie, he had a few years (or decades) of catching up he had to do. Maybe heâll finish watching Star Wars, as he only had the sequels left.
However, he found himself unable to start the movie.
Bucky couldnât stop thinking about his first interaction with the new Agent.Â
She was definitely annoying. He didnât even understand why she was trying to talk to him. He knew that she didnât want to be here working with them and he was fine with that.
Still, he felt bad about their first interaction. Telling someone to âf*ck offâ isnât exactly the most friendly way to say âhelloâ.Â
Maybe he should say sorry to her.
âHello there Barnes.â Natasha says, interrupting his train of thought.
Natasha walks over to the couch and sits down as she continues, âSo, how do you feel about our new Agent.âÂ
âI assume you know about my interaction with the Agent, Natalia. How did you find out?â Bucky doesnât look up from his tablet.Â
âSteve told me. Also, you were staring at that wall for 4 minutes, I was able to make some guesses.â God damn former Russian assassins, Bucky thinks to himself, âBucky, I know you arenât happy about how that first interaction went.â
âI know you are friends with her, but Iâm not. She is a consultant for this mission then she is leaving again. We both know that. Not even you can convince her to stay.â Bucky responds, tilting his head as eyebrows furrow.Â
âYou could tell her youâre sorry.âÂ
âNot happening.â
âŃĐ°ĐșĐŸĐč ŃĐżŃŃĐŒŃĐč (so stubborn)â Bucky laughs sardonically at that.Â
Natasha keeps up from the couch and starts walking the halls of the Compound.
She needs to fix this. The chances of convincing you to stay are already slim, but you would never agree to help them again if you and Bucky donât fix things with each other.
You and Bucky are both too stubborn. Natasha smiles slightly at the thought.
Maybe in an alternate universe, you and Bucky would be friends.
Eventually, she reaches Steve's office. She needs his help.
âHello, Romanoff. Are you here to talk about the mission?â Steve is sitting at his desk going through paperwork. Natasha considers making fun of him for not using his computer but decides against it.
âWell, it certainly is a mission, maybe more of a personal mission.â
âWhat is it?â Steve looks at her, clearly not amused.Â
âI want our Agent friend to have a good experience working here and I need Bucky to get along with her.â Natasha takes a seat in the chair across from his desk.
âYou arenât trying to matchmake them, are you?âÂ
âNo, well not yet.â Natasha smiles.
âNatasha-â Steve is starting to feel more like his age.
âIâm not doing that, I just need them to get over that first introduction.â Natasha reassures him.
âI agree. I already talked to them both about it. We are going to have to do the work for them since they are both too stubborn.â
Steve knows Natasha wants you to stay, he does too. Itâs unlikely, but he should at least try. He needs to think of a way to get you and Bucky to talk to each other and find something you have in common. Itâs going to be hard to get you to talk to Bucky though. You donât even want to spend a lot of talk with Steve and Natasha.
Then, he realizes what he can do to fix this.
"Agent, she had fieldwork experience from when she worked for SHIELD. Right?"
"Yes she does,â Natasha raises an eyebrow, âI remember, we did a few missions together, but what does that have to do with anything? She focuses on tech and analytics work."
âI have an idea.â

âSteve, you should just tell me the mission and so I can just complete it on my own.â You said as you paced back and forth across Steveâs office.Â
This wasnât the first time youâve had this conversation with Steve, and you donât expect it to be the last time. Every few weeks, Steve and the Avengers are planning a mission, Steve asks for your help, and you say no. Though, most of these conversations happen over email.Â
âWhile I do admire your confidence, you know these types of missions are dangerous to do on your own and my job is to keep everyone here safe.â Steve looked directly at you showing that he was not willing to negotiate.Â
âYour job is to keep the Avengers safe, not me. I still havenât agreed to work for all of you and I donât plan on it.âÂ
Steve looks directly at you as he starts to speak, âI know what you are capable of. You are incredibly resourceful and intelligent. Thatâs why I invited you to work with us in the first place, but you canât always be independent. You can work with a team again, and be surrounded by people who care about you.âÂ
You laugh to yourself. Steve always loved bringing up the idea of you working with a team again. He valued working with others so much, and yet you could never see the point. You used to work with others, then felt betrayed when you realized it was all a lie. Steve was always someone you could trust though. It's sort of part of his brand, good old Captain America. He always considered you a friend despite the fact that you avoided him most of the time. Maybe you owe him a small favor.Â
âHow long is the mission?â You ask as you avoid eye contact,
Steve smiles to himself, usually, by now you would have told him you were not interested and to leave you alone unless he has baked goods.Â
âThe first mission I have for you is only a week long. We will be working mostly remotely for the first few days as we plan, so you can stay here at the compound and work.âÂ
âSlow down there Cap, Iâm only agreeing to help you out with one mission and there is no need for me to stay at the compound. I can easily go back and forth between my apartment and here.âÂ
"Of course, I promise it will be just this one mission then I won't ask you again." Steve says as his smile grows larger.Â
âAlright, Iâll do it.â You immediately reject your decision.
Shortly after you leave the compound, Steve leaves his office to go to the kitchen and finds Bucky and Natasha searching through the cabinets.
Natasha looks up at Steves and smiles, âYou seem cheery today, did you find another old man film to watch?â Natasha and Steve both chuckle.
âNo, better actually. She finally agreed to join us for a mission.â Steve responds. Natasha seems both surprised and excited, while Bucky continues to search through the cabinets.
âThe former SHIELD agent? I still donât understand why you put so much effort into trying to recruit her in the first place. She clearly isnât interested.â Bucky gruffsÂ
âFirst off Buck, she clearly is at least slightly interested now since she agreed to help us. Second, she is a very skilled agent and tech-savvy. She has found multiple Hydra agents and operations all on her own using technology she developed.â Steve says, looking at his friend while Bucky tries to ignore him.Â
Bucky Barnes didnât know this agent. Back when Steve and Natasha had worked with her, he was still stuck under Hydraâs control and was a puppet for them. He didnât understand why his friend was so adamant about her skills and getting her to join the Avengers when she clearly likes working alone. Bucky could understand that though. He was still adjusting to being an âAvengerâ after decades of being an assassin on his own.Â
Natasha laughs to herself, âShe is a good person. We used to joke around a lot together during meetings, always making them less dull. I think youâll get along with her, Barnes.âÂ
âI highly doubt it.â Bucky responds unamused.
A few days later, you got up much earlier than you usually did. Before, you were your own boss and created your own schedule. Now you have to get ready for an early morning Avengers meeting. It also didn't help that you would have to walk to the compound since you didn't have a car. While you could have taken Steveâs offer to stay at the compound for a week, you wanted to spend as much time away from the Avengers as possible, and getting up early to walk seemed like a necessary evil.
Eventually, you arrive at the compound early for the mission briefing. All you know about the mission so far is that you will be working mostly with Tony on tech for the mission. You are directed to a conference room that has a large table with only one person sitting there.Â
Bucky is sitting at the table with a book in his hands. There is a little crease between his eyebrows and a slump to his shoulders as he stares intently at the book.Â
As you enter the room he doesnât look up his book. Part of you understands that he probably just wants to be left alone with his book, but the other part of you is arguing that now is the best time to introduce yourself. You didn't want your introduction to be too late and Bucky was one of the few Avengers you didnât personally know.
You walk up to the seat next to him and grab the chair. âCan I sit here?â you ask him, trying to force a smile on your face.
âNo.â He responds without looking at you.
âWho sits here usually?â you ask âIf it's just Natasha or Clint, Iâll probably just sit here anyway.â
âI donât like people sitting next to me, Agent.â He says as the tone of his voice gets slightly more annoyed. You havenât been referred to as Agent for years, but at least now you realize that he knows who you are.Â
You look at chairs on either side of him âOh, so both of these chairs are available, so do you have a good side or-â
âJust leave me the fuck aloneâ He interrupts you before you can finish your thought.
You stare at Bucky and he never once looks back. You expected Bucky to be more reserved than the others, but you didn't expect him to be so insolent.Â
"Fine" eventually, you walk away to the other side of the table and take a seat.
You grab your phone from your bag, trying to stare down at it instead of focusing on the man on the other side of the table. Bucky didnât even try to fake a nice introduction as you did, he was just irritating. If you knew that you would be working with someone like him, you wouldnât have agreed to the mission.
Eventually, after what feels like an eternity, but is really only a couple minutes, the rest of the team starts entering the conference room.
Natasha enters the room with Sam Wilson. She gives you a small smile and they both start walking towards you.Â
âItâs good to see you again Agent, we are all excited to work with you.â Natasha says. You chuckle at that. Not everyone is excited to work with you apparently. You quickly glance towards Bucky. His lips are pressed together in a straight line, ignoring everyone who walks by him.
âSo, how did he finally break you?â You look away from Bucky to see Sam smiling and laughing. You had only met Sam a few times before. Steve occasionally brought him to try to convince you to join them for a mission.Â
Sam continues to say, âI mean, if my charming personality wasnât enough to convince you to help us, I thought there was no hope.â You laugh at him. At least he will be enjoyable to work with.Â
âIâm just helping with this one mission, then you guys are leaving me alone. Donât worry though, your charming personality definitely helped convince me.â You respond sarcastically.
Natasha and Sam laugh as they sit down in the chairs on either side of you.Â
Eventually Steve and Tony Stark enter the room together. Steve walks towards Bucky and for the first time Bucky looks up from his book. Steve holds out his hand and Bucky gives him the book. You notice the title of the book, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Steve puts the book down on a table in the corner of the room and begins his presentation.Â
âThank you everyone for being here." Steve looks directly at you as he speaks. "We have reason to believe there is a Hydra operation here in New York. It seems small, but they are developing technologies for other operations. The mission will take around a week and will include-"Â
"Basically we just need to develop a tech system to disarm all of their tech and hack into their security system for all intel we can find." Tony interrupts.Â
"Thank you, Tony." Steve responds while rolling his eyes.
"Oh, you are so very welcome Capsicle. I'm always here to help." Tony laughs. "Anyways, the tech team will include myself, Banner, and the world's most stubborn agent."Â
Everyone looks at you, including Bucky. Steve starts telling everyone about all of your achievements and skills. Bucky just stares at you and you glare right back.Â
You realize that you never want to be back here again.
