Woot, thanks for the shout out Retronator!
Well, the first from my top 10 most anticipated pixel art games of 2018/19 is out! Ranked in 5th place (primarily by how much I love the art) was Aegis Defenders a.k.a. @aegisthegame and it released to positive reviews from both the press (78 Metacritic for Switch) and players (as rated on Steam for Mac/Windows).
The art in the game is just delightful with its smooth shading on top of a lovely, colorful palette. The use of primaries plays its own purpose for gameplay as different characters deal more damage to enemies that match in colors (very clever to present it that way!).
Oh, what is the gameplay, you ask? An action-platformer that turns into a (still side-view) tower defense game. Levels include ruins that you have to protect with a combination of placing towers and containing the spillover with shooting yourself. You switch between up to 4 characters, which makes the game really shine in co-op (although for only 2, not 4 players). On the flip side, it gets very demanding for the soloist (whether that’s good depends if you like hard challenges or not).
That’s the gist. The rest is exploring wonderfully designed worlds and learning about the protagonists, illustrated with usual digital art instead of pixels.
Check the game out in motion below and head over to the website to get it for Windows, Mac, PS4, or Switch ($20).

Did a movie-style poster for Aegis Defenders! I actually started with a pencil sketch this time(had made a habit of going straight to ink) so there are some process photos at the bottom as well.

Spoiler alert for that last image, the third choice is def the best choice. Both in life and in the game because #indiegamedev is tough!
(But seriously, being an indiedev is hard mode. Please become something more practical like a plumber who fights goombas.)

Wanted to make some original artwork for our OST that we’ll be releasing alongside the game - had a lot of stupid fun making Aegis a record player and having the characters playing instruments in the back.
Shout out to Power Up Audio and Riley Koenig for their work on our music!

A little behind the scenes on how we do animatics in Aegis Defenders!
Draw the art (obviously)
Separate into pieces using photoshop (I like using the timeline to make it easy to export).
Place pieces in Unity, separating the pieces out in the Z direction to create depth
Add lighting and particle effects as desired
Animate a camera through the scene!
I’ll post some of the animatics in motion soon in a separate post! (At a cafe with not so great internet #indiegamedev)

Our game has 18 levels with a unique Tower Defense section at the end of each one - here’s a random selection of them!

Some process photos from an illustration I did for fun! For those interested, my routine lately has been pretty basic:
Pen and paper for lines
Scan and clean up in photoshop
Use a giant mask to fill in basic flat colors
Finish with one layer of shading (plus some fancy blending style)
Retweet with a comment or message me with ideas with what I should do next! (We’re trying to ramp up awareness for our game so I’ll probably give decent ideas a shot heh)

Kickstarter Backer appreciation post! Here are some screenshots focusing on some of the backers who made it into the game as statues! Did my best to make them all appear like ancient statues and was pretty happy with the result!

Some of the commission pieces I’ve been doing on postcards! I really like doing it with brush pen because I can get really nice lines and textures all in one step! It’s great! Until you mess up!
