Hi there! I noticed your profile and saw that you might have some valuable academic information. I have graduated in English Linguistics and am currently applying for a master's program. I would really appreciate any insights or resources you could share in this regard. Would you be open to discussing this further? I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!
Hi there!
Firstly, I apologise massively for the (most likely) delayed response.
Having now graduated from my MA in Translation from the University of Bristol, I guess I can give some general tips:
Make sure the course structure suits you: I ended up doing a completely remote MA programme with no mandatory contact time, everything was uploaded onto a group server and we had the occasional call on Teams. While this flexibility suited me both with my neurodivergence (very up-and-down energy levels) and my other work commitments, it was very difficult to stay motivated at times without a steady schedule. So make sure you pick both with subject AND structure in mind.
An MA/MSc is much shorter than a standard BA/BSc, so bear this in mind, since it is much more intense. Don't be too harsh on yourself if you need time to adjust to a different workload intensity.
Your Master doesn't have to be the exact same course name/subject as your Bachelor. I studied Modern and Medieval Languages at BA level and then specialised more for my MA. Obviously it makes sense and will be easier to get into a programme that is at least correlated to your previous qualification, but don't be scared to pursue something a little different.
Connect with people online or in-person who have done/are doing the course you want to do! Ask them questions! Do not be shy about this, most people (myself included) will be happy to share their experiences, good or bad.
If you have any more specific questions, do not hesitate to ask! All the best with your further academic studies :)

This is the magic lucky word count. Reblog for creativity juice. It might even work, who knows.

2024/25 Blog Update
Dearest reader,
Welcome to my scrapbook, the one that happens to be online!
My name is Cassie and I recently finished my Master's in Translation. Now marks the first time I am (for the foreseeable future) fully out of education (after literally two decades spent in it) (yikes).
I am settling into my first full-time role as an in-house translator and project assistant, which is proving to be a big old task.
I also recently broke the long distance with my partner of four years (woo!), we live together now and are close to moving into a little old flat in a German city I have admired for a long time.
Hence, I am currently navigating a lot of change in my life, and have been for the past few months. Full-time work and all of these changes take adjusting to for anyone, but I am also a late-diagnosed autistic woman, so it's proving extra difficult for me.
I plan to use this space to share any images or posts I find inspiring, and hope that this seeps into my own creative practice that includes reading, writing, painting, translating, and learning new skills like tarot cards.
I don't have a good track record of sticking with the things I really like doing, perhaps because they become a bit too scary for me to handle. But I want to learn to break them down into manageable daily/regular habits, so I can learn to enjoy them again.
I hope you stick around and feel free to ask me any questions about studying languages/translation, work in translation, writing, restarting your hobbies, moving countries in your 20s, and late diagnosed neurodivergence! Or you know, anything that tickles your pickle.
Lots of love from behind my screen,
Cassie

spending my afternoons and evenings in coffee shops so I won’t just sleep at home. drove half an hour to this place and I love it. the coffee and pastry’s great, not too sweet. the ambience good enough for studying, and it’s just warm and aesthetically pleasing
