Kerby Rosanes (@kerbyrosanes) sends us on a mythic nautical expedition in this epic #fantasyart #illustration. I am not sure how that sailing ship found itself beneath a Pegasus Cloudscape Personification or floating above some wicked Full Moon Whale Abyss, and I DEFINITELY don’t know why both of those indescribable events are taking place concurrently... but it is quite an awesome sight to behold. • The amazing subject matter of this sketchbook drawing is only matched by the great details. Those clouds and ripping winds appear solid enough to hold that titanic Pegasus aloft. Check out this #isometric #penandink #architecturedrawing by Grant Abernathy (@abz_fineart) of a cozy looking log cabin that happens to be hiding a rather large secret in its enormous basement. • I’m not sure how the Iron Giant got into the basement, but I do really enjoy how Grant used various line, dot and dash hatching techniques to bring some great depth and texture to this illustration. I know it takes Grant a good long while to make these isometrics, but I am always impressed with them when he is able to find the time to complete one. They really show off his creative and technical skills off nicely. Here’s a cool #penandink #architecture #drawing by Sam Gillett (@samgillettillustrations) to finish out the week. An exaggerated perspective mixed with Sam’s drawing style that somehow appears both “sketched” and meticulously detailed gives this piece of Victorian architecture a bit of a creepy or spooky look to it. The long shadows, peaked eaves, and steep roof also play into the eerie aesthetic... so why is it that, the more I look at this house, the more I feel beckoned inside? Check out this #architecture #fountainpendrawing by Andrew Banks (@abillustrator) of the Holy Family Church in Chicago, IL. • Using a @twsbi 580AL with Platinum Carbon Black Ink, Andrew added some great texture, depth, and shading to this drawing using several tools from the monochromatic artist toolbox: Stippling on the clocktower to show shading and the texture of a particular kind of stone; Dashed line hatches on the brick facade of the main body of the building; Cross-hatched lines on the side of the church to emphasize dimension and shade in the side that does not receive sunlight; and dense parallel lines on the roof to show its dark shading and texture. • Great use of all those techniques, Andrew! In this #nature #pendrawing by Stephen Thomas (@steve.t97), the reflection in a mountain lake shows a grand universe beyond. That, my friends, is either the deepest lake you’ve ever seen, or a wondrous viewport into the cosmos. Either way, it is quite spectacular. • Love the way that Stephen drew the lines of the clouds, as their outline merges with boundary of the drawing. The increasing density of lines towards the upper levels of the sky are a nice touch to signify the darkening sky. And, as always, Stephen does not disappoint on the detail he provides in topographic crags and shadows on that mountain. I’m not sure what it is about this #fantasyarchitecture #pendrawing by Martijn Van Berkum (@martijnvanberkum) that drew me to it when I caught it in my “#architecturesketch” feed, but it really is cool to look at. • It might be my history of playing platformer videogames like Portal 2 or turn-based RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics. Or maybe it’s due to my interest for recent cyberpunk movies and TV shows like Tron: Legacy, Tron: Uprising, and Altered Carbon. • Or it might just be the stark simplicity of the “textures” (even “smooth” or the absence of texture is a texture) and how well the drawing illustrates how simple line hatched can create such rich dimension and interesting worlds that even white and black blocks stacked on top of each other appear wondrous. • It’s probably a mix of all those things... but whatever the reasons, I definitely think this would be an interesting framework for a 3D world to roam around in. Here’s a cool #penandink #architecturesketch of the Manhattan Bridge in New York by Luke Adam Hawker (@lukeadamhawker). The urbansketching style of this drawing adds a great schematic aesthetic to this section of bridge. I love how the details towards the center of the image are more refined and embellished. The collection of lines becomes more loose and free flowing towards the edges, like you’re trying to focus in on the bridge, but your eyes let the rest of it dissolve into the background. It also reminds me of some kind of comic strip thought bubble, where you try to imagine some place, but the details are all a bit fuzzy. Cool sketching subject selection and very well drawn, Luke. As always, Jesse’s talented eye for detail and ability to capture architectural design on pen and paper do not disappoint. • Just as equally important, though, is Jesse’s skill at framing a piece. Love these #architecturedrawing analysis #sketchbook pages from Oğuzhan Çengel (@mr__constantine) of the Basilica di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Basilica) in Vatican City. • Architectural design is so much more than the exterior aesthetic of a building, and Oğuzhan shows and describes many of special details of this building in these pages. We, of course, are presented with a beautifully rendered elevation view of the basilica on the right, colored in to highlight the lovely patina that the centuries of weather have added to its exterior. • On the left, we have a section of the iconic dome, together with some great shading work and perspective details. A nice little description of the history and importance of the Basilica is also included and, while lifted from Wikipedia (no problem with that at all… I do that often), is a useful addition to this set of drawings as it helps to bring historical context to the presented designs (I also just like that justification of the words follow the curved edge of the dome; it’s a nice touch). • Finally, we have the successive designs of floor plans for the Basilica. The design and construction of the Basilica took so long that the popes and designers of the building did not live long enough to complete it. Design and oversight of its construction passed from one person to another, each person adding his own details and touches along the way. • Great set of pages here, Oğuzhan. Cormac Phalen (@archy_type) doodles a cool #penandink #architecturedrawing of a stilthouse perched atop a stone cliff hidden amongst some dark foliage. Unlike all of Cormac’s other stilt-supported structures, it appears that we could access this precarious wooden tower via an apparent hastely constructed ladder. • Speaking with Cormac about this uncharacteristic choice, he explained that his real world job of drawing actual buildings as an architect must have leaked into his sketchwork… first he adds some emergency egress to his driftwood domiciles, then the local architecture review board requires him to screen the neighbors’ yards from view with some dense vegetation. I think that the ladder is a nice little addition because, to be honest, my ropeless rock climbing skills are not the best and I would not want to fall to an almost certain death. So a ladder would most certainly make that climb safer… right? Maybe? • As for the vegetation, it’s just got a cool sort of planned randomness to it. Like Cormac had some idea about where he wanted the plants to grow into and let his pen act as the fertilizer to allow those vines, branches and leaves to spread out around the stilt house in a very natural, organic looking manner. • Love the realistic textures of the wood planks (as always), the shape and design of the rocky outcrop is great, and the small bit of vertical line hatching helps to shade the stone while also making it appear a bit taller and thinner than it actually is. Industrial designer McKay Nilson (@mckay.nilson) envisions what an Apple-design coffee machine might look like in this #conceptdesign #sketchbook #drawing by blending the designs of the Homepod, iMac Pro, and Apple's new campus. • The futuristic design is really cool, though I’m not sure I would trust myself to pour in the water necessary to brew the coffee so close to my $5,999 iMac Pro (see price tag in pic)... • I love how industrial design drawings are equal parts sketch, illustration, and diagram. They focus just as much on how an object FUNCTIONS as how it LOOKS. Design is obviously key (which McKay is obviously skilled at), but he also gives us some great “under the hood” diagrams about how parts might spin or close or lift out of place with illustrative arrows, and shows some cool exploded view detailing how the parts are pieces together. Here’s a great #fantasyarchitecture #pendrawing by @mister_vi of a fantastic castle built on the back of a sea turtle. • I love how the footings of the fortress seem to almost rise out of the turtle’s back, like it was not constructed ONTO, but grown OUT OF, the shell. Also, some great touch in making the patterns of the shell look more like a hedged garden... if you didn’t see the turtle’s head, you might just think this castle was on a floating island! • Contrasting with the detail of the garden shell is the simple line work that Mister Vi used to depict the ripples on the water and the outline of the turtle’s body below the surface. Want to get inspired? Check out this epic stippling #nature #pendrawing by Dylan Brady (@dylan.brady) of sunbeams piercing an expansive dark cloudscape, illuminating the mountain pass below. • As I’ve noted in the past, Dylan is incredibly skilled at composing his artwork. From the location of the cabins, to the spacing of the trees, the placement of the mountains in relation to the sky and the cabins, and the use of the Rule of Thirds in a framed illustrated scene all work together to make us WANT to look at it and make us WANT to examine its details. In this particular piece, though, Dylan really pushed the detail to its maximum potential. • Using what might be a million dots, Dylan has pointillistically stippled the texture, shape, and shading of so many aspects of this natural viewshed. It is done so skillfully, though, that you might not even notice they are all masses of dots collected at differing densities. My favorite part is how the ONLY thing distinguishing the bright light of the sunbeams from the darkened landscape beyond is the density of dots. There are no lines. No white pen ink. No other artistic element to differentiate light from shadow other than a few thousand minute touches of ink. Just spectacular. • Be sure to head over to Dylan’s page to show him some love. Or...
