⠀⠀⠀⠀I think a lot about the theme of Nice and Lin Ling, this intimate, anguished tone and obsessive focus on Lin Ling’s fractured identity.

Lin Ling took on his image, his role, that cursed mantle of responsibility. In Donghua, Lin Ling came to a good ending, but what if it was a bad ending? What if Ling Ling had not resisted but allowed the process to continue? Where he loses himself completely. Where his "I" is just rubble. And to feel anything, to even exist, he starts scavenging for pieces of Nice. Like a junkie chasing a fix.

Find an old record of Nice’s mission? Nice. Catch a flicker of that ice-gaze in his own eyes in the mirror? Nice. Someone mentions an old stunt Nice pulled, and he nods like *he* did it? Nice. Temporary fullness. Temporary wholeness, even if it’s fake. "Pleasant"? "Good"? Fck yes, in that moment - yes! Like one sip of water in a desert. But it's nice. Capital N.

At first he was a fucked-up hybrid. His own personality? Smudged out. Dissolved under the weight of Nice’s mask. But he didn’t become the real Nice either. Couldn't. Doesn't know him. Didn't live his past, doesn't breathe his thoughts. He's performing. Squeezing out a parody, terrified someone will see the cracks. See the emptiness beneath.

And that emptiness... That’s what’s killing him. That monstrous, gaping void in-between. He's not Lin Ling. But and Not Nice. He’s No One in a Ghost’s costume. And that void? You can't fill it. It just is. Gnawing him hollow. Exhausting him. Try being someone you aren’t — someone you can’t become — every damn second. Terrifying? Worse. It's existential hell.

The sickest part? It never ends. No final dose makes him fully Nice and plugs the void. It’s an endless cycle: Withdrawal -> hunt for a shard -> brief high -> worse withdrawal, worse void. Real Nice is unavailable. He’s cursed to forever scavenge crumbs from a dead man’s table, shoving them into a bottomless pit.

His own past? Fading. Feels unreal. Like a dream. But Nice's memories? Nice's pain? They're becoming his memories. Brighter. True. He believes them more than his own. They're his opioids. His only compass in the chaos. Who is he? The one who lived what Nice lived. Even if he didn’t.

And the name... God, that name. Nice. It's everywhere now. A torture device. His name? A stolen name? Both. Neither. Every time he hears it casually — and you hear it a hundred times a day — it’s a knife on nerves:

"Have a nice day!" on the radio? Not a wish.

"That's a nice choice!" in a store? Mockery: "Good choice? Like choosing this fate?"

"Nice to meet you!"? A threat: "Pleasure to meet you? Pleasure to start erasing you?"*

"Nice and easy..."? A lie: "Nothing about Nice is easy."

"Everything's going to be nice!"? A sentence: "Everything will be Nice. Only Nice."

"Nice one!"? Confirmation: Yeah. One Nice. Soon you'll be nothing else."

"You look nice today!"? An inspection: "Do I look like. Him now? Is the mask fusing?"

He physically even can’t hear “nice” as just “pleasant.” His brain auto-translates it to NICE. The name. Every "nice" is a drop of water eroding stone. Slow. Relentless. Daily torture by the most mundane word alive.

That's it. He's trapped. Between sky and ground. Between himself and a shadow. Forever starving. Forever hollow. Forever assembling a dead man’s puzzle. And his torturer’s name blares from every speaker. Nice. Ironic. Cruel. Perfect.

Nice lives au where Lin Ling grabs his cape before he falls. Miss J decides for mental health reasons, they're gonna have 2 Nices.

They have to move in together. They switch off on superhero jobs/publicity stunts. Nice can be nearly at twice as many places as long as he's not in 2 places at once. His trust SKYROCKETS.

The Enlighter tries to expose that there's 2 of them, to which people tell him he's insane, but it spawns the 'Twice as Nice' theory. The people RUN with it. The ship is born. Ao3 does what it does and suddenly, Nice and Lin Ling start catching feelings (like they weren't already.)

Enlighter cries.
