IS CINEMA DEAD? Ivo did a fantastic job grading and color correcting the footage. He cleaned and fixed almost everything which was possible to be fixed, he used at the end some power masks and filters to polish and fine touch the picture so at the end of the second month we had everything done. By doing color correction and color grading( the difference is very simple: color correction is about adjusting the image exposure, saturation and contrast, while color grading is about working on color, overall tonality, skin tones, and matching the different shots from the scene) I felt that the film's mood and feeling was created. Initially during my pre production research, I was watching and selecting a lot of Scandinavians and British dramas, but mostly I was watching Andrey Zvyagantsev's films so I had in mind that I would like to make NoOne's first part with similar color palette as those films. I imagined the first half of the film to look cold, muted, bluish - everything which evokes loneliness, separations, sadness, agony, suffering, misery etc. And as the film progress the the mood to transform into its natural summer mood and feeling. Ivo and I discussed my idea and he dropped his point of view about that matter. He suggested that we had to stay as close,honest and truthful as possible to the location and the place where we shot the film. First of all because the place in our story had a very significant role and second of all, because the nature and the value of the film was its rawness, its organic and natural feeling and mood. I agreed with him and I gave up my concept and idea how the film should look. At the end of February 2016 we've got our entire post production completed. Ivo wanted to test screen the film. IS CINEMA DEAD? First Screenings in front of investors, partners, crew and cast. It was 9th of March, Blagovesta's birthday and the next day the 10th of March was Boris' birthday , he was becoming 2 years old. We celebrated their birthdays and we celebrated the completion of the film. It was a very happy moment but on other hand we were completely exhausted Blagovesta was the most tired from anybody else. She was looking after Boris and the family, becaused I was completely absorbed and obsessed from the making of the film. I managed to get some projects on the side just to earn some cash from making corporate videos. However, we still were broke and I was getting quite deep in debts. Our old Subaru Impreza broke. I broke it wile shooting the film, because i was using it as an off road jeep , carrying the crew and ewuipment to some very rough terrains. Luckily for us, Blagovesta's uncle Georgy Zafirov gave us his old Opel Astra and we again had a family car. This was constantly happening to us, it is the great paradox of life, where you achieve something, When you accomplish some goal which you were fighting for, but at the same time you lose something else, you pay the price for daring to make your dream reality. On April 2016 we were organizing the first private cinema screening for our close friends, for the people who helped us during the making of the film and for all private investors. IS CINEMA DEAD? Ivo Velkov and I booked one of the best cinemas in Sofia, which had excellent screen, and sound system. The time came when for the first time we were going to sit in the dark cinema hall and watch on a massive screen our film. Their is saying that before to see the film in a theater watching it alone by yourself, you can't be sure whether you like or dislike the film, whether you nailed it or not. I had seen once the film on my home projector. I was very pleased from the final result, however I was very curious to see the film on a big screen. I was excited and nervous at the same time. I was satisfied and grateful, but I was very eager to see how people will react to it. Two days before the test screening I dropped the DCP to the cinema's projectionist. He loaded it. We arranged the test screening. Ivo and I were ready to watch the film for the first time. Ivo was nervous too, he said that every dcp projector, projects uniquely the file. Depending of the calibration and the quality of the maintenance. He was very concern to see whether our color grading would be reproduced correctly matching what we had seen on the color correction display monitor. But I was concern about everything, the sound, the picture, and most of all for the overall impression of the film. I was looking to see whether we have achieved the goal which we set from the very beginning. To create a film, which is a character driven poetry, about the inner transformation of a young woman. IS CINEMA DEAD? We sat at the middle of the hall. It was a very big cinema for around 500 sits with huge screen and atmos sound I felt butterflies in my stomach. The complete darkness and us. Suddenly the light from the DCP projector went on, the beginning of the film is with 10 sec title cards and logos, however when the first sound came I was blown away from the low frequency sound which hit me in the stomach and I went completely speechless. Since that moment I was completely immersed in this experience called CINEMA. I was inside the film for the whole 90 minutes. I was enjoying the film, its story, its characters, its controversial Visual style, its music, sound, colors. I was moved so strongly from the close ups, that I almost forgot that we made the film. I was sitting in the hall as a random audience member, watching a movie without to analyze or criticize it. I surrendered to the story, I relaxed and enjoyed every frame of it. At the end of the film I was stunned and astonished from the work which we have done. I was entirely thankful and proud to every one who worked and created this film. And finally I realized how big sacrifice everyone has made in order the film to be the film which I was watching. When the film finished I felt a great amount of energy and inspiration. I was uplifted and energized, I was hooked again from the film. I promised to myself that I would do everything possible this film to reach as many people as possible and that I would do everything possible to make from this film a success story not only creatively but financially, because I felt a great obligation to make at least one thing for our investors, at least to recoup thr invested money in order to cover and give back their investment. IS CINEMA DEAD? Before the screening in front of our friends and investors I felt very confident and calm. I was sure inside myself that we did a hell a lot of work and that we created with micro budget a really brave, bold and artistic film, with high production value. Emelina came with her parents, she hasnt been listening till that moment the final version of her music and sound mix. Then she for the first time heard the sound in 5.1 surround system cinema hall. My partners from @Leya a company which I co-found with them in 2014 were also in the hall. Yavor and Yordanka were welcoming our guests. Blagovesta was with me, and thus we were ready to show the film. It happen to watch the entire film for a second time in a period of three days. I found out that to watch a film with audience and especially with this kind of audience changed totally my experience. I suddenly felt a little bit conscience and worried. I started to be aware and be overly sensitive for every little reaction from the audience. I started to worry whether they would like it or not, whether they would find it boring and pretensions, or whether they would feel that they have wasted their money on a non commercial film. Those concerns of course made my watching experience much tense and stressful. At the end of the film we escort our guests and made small talks with every each of them. It was an experience with mixed feelings, we were quite nervous but at the same time happy and relieved that at least we made our promise to create and make a feature length film and at most we achieved our creative goal to produce and create a small art-house film with commercial potential to succeed. IS CINEMA DEAD? At the end of April few weeks after the first screening we organized another screening for the film's crew and cast. In a small art-house G8 Cinema. Only Yavor, Blagovesta, Emelina, Yordanka and I had already seen the film. I can share it is nerve wrecking experience as well. It has a very specific atmosphere in the cinema when most of the people who have worked on the film are there to watch it for the first time. The actors in general are very self absorbed people with great amount of self criticism. The creative people are very self critic and it is very difficult for them to see at first glance more of the positives and less of the negatives. However at the end of the screening, most of them were very happy from the result. Few were disappointed from certain aspects of the film. I must say that probably because all of them gave more than 100% into the project, they felt it very personal and somehow like their own project, moreover most of them were film directors and every film director has his or her own vision and idea how a particular story has to be told. I had to get all of these details in consideration when I was receiving their feedbacks, in order my initial perception and feeling about the film not to be twisted and changed by their reactions of it. This is extremely important because none of them or let say very few of them would be doing any promotional, distributional, and selling work. They basically won't be involved in the selling of the film. And the worst thing which could happen to a film is its own creators to dislike it, because how a disliked product can be promoted to the public. IS CINEMA DEAD? My observation from those two private screenings were that every person has his own individual experience from the film. They have their own understandings of its story and theme, of its character's development etc. Everybody tried to present his or her vision of how the things should/ would/ had to to look like. Especially this is true for the actors of the film. Actors in general have a tendency to try to channel the whole story to their side and to their characters, and even after the film has been edited and wrapped they still would love to see more of that scene, the other shot and basically more from themselves. This is totally natural and normal, however I had to digest some negative reactions from the cast but then with time passing everybody from the cast started to enjoy and to appreciate objectively the real value of the film. IS CINEMA DEAD? Distribution/PR/Marketing/Advertisement So in the beginning of 2016 we got our film on Blu Ray, on DVD, on DCP and on an internet file. We were holding it with our hands and we had to do something with it. Later on I realized the easiest part is the actual making of the film and I know how absurd this statement sounds. However this is the real truth. Making of the film itself is easier than bringing it to the public, catching their attention and holding it for as long as possible in order to make the film available for as many people as possible. CINEMA is DEAD because it doesn’t have any more control over its Distribution/Publicity/Marketing/Advertisement, cinema is dead because it can't afford to make powerful Distribution/Publicity/Marketing/Advertisement at least for those low budget, independent films out of Hollywood system which are not high concept franchises and sequels, but are thoughtful bold and provocative filmmaking. I knew that I had to start working as soon as possible on the digital marketing in order to compensate the lack of money and resources and I started working on the digital marketing from the very beginning of the project at the beginning of 2014. It has been an outgoing process till very now. I have read so many books, watched so many videos and listened so many podcasts about gorilla marketing, about micro budget self distribution, PR and advertisement. However despite the fact that I utilize all of those learned skills which indeed gave me the opportunity to make NoOne as popular and interesting to the Bulgarian public as possible with 0 budget, the film's nature itself had its own limitations and borders, which we couldn't cross over. First of all it was in the niche of art-house low budget films, an auteur film, without famous actors with Bulgarian language and non popular genre – psychological drama. Despite its provocative and bold filmmaking I thought at that time that NoOne had only two chances to become world popular and to reach a wider audience: first were by breaking into some of the world biggest film festivals( check the specially dedicated chapter for it) and the other through internet and VOD. IS CINEMA DEAD? WHY YOU WERE DOING THIS FILM? I had answered this question already but I will give it another shot here. I did this film because I wanted to make a film about an inner human transformation, which to move emotionally and intellectually as many people as possible. Here you can see where lays the conflict in my motivation and reason. First of all I wanted the film to be as independent and artistic as possible, and second of all I wanted to be as popular as possible. Of course that these two worlds occasionally merge and unite but in the reality this happens very, very rarely. Maybe because my lack of experience, or just a high self believe or because I trusted my instinct and believed in the final film and neglected the facts which were brutal about the possibility for a movie to break into a huge film festival and to make a global international theatrical distribution. Only in UK in 2016 around 1000 feature films were produced, 20 got a theatrical release and only 2 of them recoup their investments. By saying that I want to point out how difficult is for a film to get theatrical release and to make profit from it. We applied to 20 film festivals with the film and we spent another good amount of money just for entry fees, copies of the film etc. Thus we had to wait for more than one year until we receive all of the film festival answers. Of course we believed that from our first main film festival application we would be selected and this was Cannes film festival, but this story can wait... IS CINEMA DEAD? THE PREMIERE The fact that we had applied for film festivals put us in situation that we had to postpone our national theatrical distribution. Before to continue with the story about our premier I guess it would be proper to mention that at that time we already got a national distributor. I contacted Hristo the CEO of A+Films which is one the best film distributors in Bulgaria. He watched the film with his wife and he call me back to say that he was more than surprised from the film, from its production value and the entire visual style and narration. Hristo was very happy to get on board and to run the national distribution of the film. Moreover he wanted to help, because he appreciated very much the fact that we were self financed and we have self produced the film. He just said that we would have to apply for a small distribution grant from NFC before to release the film at cinemas. He knew that we would like to make a national premiere before the film festival circuit to finish and he was a little bit concern from that fact, because we were making something very unusual to make two premieres with two promotional campaigns. His concern proved to be correct, because later on when we were doing our media promotional campaign for the official release of the film in March 2017, most of the medias and tv programs didn't want to invite us in their shows because we have been already there the previous year with the same story – to present the new Bulgarian feature film NoOne.
