I am so nervous because I'm about to use the power of deciding what to do today that my parents have granted me to make them watch Star Trek IV The Voyage Home (the one with the whales) with me
They've never let me show them Star Trek stuff before🧍 (except for my little brother but he doesn't want to watch it after having seen the first AOS movie and half of The Cage)
They downright refuse to watch it
But I've been missing showing them at least parts of the things that I like at the moment, so I'm very glad they're agreeing to put it on this evening but I'm also SO nervous that they might not like it, I remember it being hilarious to me and a very entertaining, family-night-style movie that was different from the other TOS movies in a way that would make it MUCH more likely to be a movie that they would enjoy too
But if the jokes don't hit the same as they did for me, if they don't even like it a little bit, that'll probably make it hard to convince them to give other versions (like AOS, which tbh I think they'd enjoy, it's pretty similar to what we've usually watched sometimes) a go😮💨
It'd take another opportunity like this one where I'd get to decide alone for special occasions to be able to watch more Star Trek with them
And I also don't want to force them to keep watching something they don't enjoy
If they do enjoy it however, I might be able to convince my parents to watch the first AOS movie with me when my little brother isn't involved in the evening plans since he wouldn't wanna rewatch it, I might even be able to introduce them to a series like SNW or so, but dangit are the stakes high and I can only hope that I didn't misjudge badly what would be enjoyable to them lmao
#We'll see#I just hope they can enjoy it at least a little bit so that I'm not dragging them through a movie they don't like#Pls pls pls be the family movie I've made it out to be#I'm probably being dramatic here lmao but I just really hope this is a movie choice that they're fine with in a way that's fun for everyone#star trek iv: the voyage home#The one with the whales

hits them with the species swap beam
I’ve been working on a McSpirk species swap AU :D
more details below the cut if anyone’s interested to hear more about them:
Spock
-human appearance (still half human half Vulcan though ofc)
-> round ears, only slightly Vulcan-looking eyebrows, short haircut
-generally somewhat collected, still a bit emotionally closed off, maybe has been told off one too many times during his attempts to explain things in-depth
-but gets EXCITED when he does get to talk about the things he finds fascinating (which is actually quite a lot, I think he’d be broadly interested in a lot of sciences, hence Starfleet lol, probably especially interested in maths, astronomy and physics, maybe philosophy too)
-people don’t actually know that his dad is the Vulcan ambassador growing up cause in typical Spock fashion he just never mentioned that part, so people generally only really find out about his Vulcan heritage if it relevantly comes up somehow or if somebody else mentions it (or if they saw it in his file), he’s not embarrassed or anything, he’s actually quite intrigued by it and does get Vulcan pointers from Sarek while growing up, he does actually bring up being half Vulcan way more than his father (or brother and sister etc), as that is relevant more often, for example to explain his super strength or to explain why he is the way he is™️
-very expressive, can’t hide a thought for anything, his eyebrow is already lethal imagine what would happen if he were to use his whole face
-> still a relatively steady and normal voice usually?
-very curious person
-due to less/almost no social pressure to behave like a true Vulcan, since they’re on Earth: has logical thinking for human standards, but also has human values embedded in his personality
Kirek
-one of the few Vulcans with a lighter shade of brown hair
-> has a bowl cut when first leaving Vulcan but starts challenging the standards for how a Vulcan should look while in Starfleet, resulting in his side bangs, as always just inside the lines but deviating from the standard enough to be noticed (in addition to the what values he’s already challenged internally)
-keeps finding ways to challenge the logic that’s the norm in a way that absolutely looks for loopholes and “technicalities” for his creative approaches to things
-> great at practicing logic but he’d do it in his own way that’s just within the lines + he’d argue well enough for it to be convincing enough for no one to be able to say anything against it
-> his superiors would still keep an eye on him and be skeptical even if he “technically still acts within the lines of logic” and he does that just well enough not to be declared a V’tosh ka’tur
-finds logic important and acts based on it as it is often the best way to do things, but sees the flaws as well as the benefits of it
-> well aware of logic’s impact all around
-> therefore keeps an eye on whether there are approaches that would make more sense than classic logic might suggest in some cases
-doesn’t make as many friends on Vulcan as human Jim would on Earth with this kind of demeanor
-finds a way to argue for pretty much anything and everything to be important to an extend, never completely dismissing something
M’Koy
-joined Starfleet to share the advanced Vulcan medical knowledge effectively, since his expertise is more useful to a big organization such as this one helping all sorts of species’ in various corners of the universe, rather than exclusively on Vulcan
-never really had a sense of belonging on Vulcan for that reason, since there is an alternative where he can follow his goal more effectively, does not practice that cultural duty to his people, because he refuses to get stuck on one singular planet helping only his own people (he’s tried and it did not sit right with him)
-> that plays a huge point in his parting from Jocelyn and their daughter
-is satisfied with how much he can help on the Enterprise
-does get increasingly frustrated with logic and order not sliding as smoothly and as in accord as he’s used to though
-> finds it more comfortable (some might even say comforting) to be around Spock as someone who also favors order and practices it well enough, as well as Kirek, who does not seem to need order as much as him, but who does actually bring some order onto this ship in the way he practices his authority
-does not talk as much as Kirek because he is afraid to does not desire to slip up on his Vulcan form of calmness
-> therefore might get especially quiet when he’s angry because he learned early on that that only gets him patronized by other Vulcans and with that even more frustrated
Friendships
Kirek & M’Koy
-respect eachother and get a sense of being understood by the other without much judgement, as they both rejected parts of the Vulcan way in their own way
-McCoy finds comfort in having another Vulcan around, almost like a little piece of his home, while he was aiming to leave his whole life, he is now finding himself missing certain structures of his home, he never favored Vulcan culture to that extend, but he had never known anything else
Kirek & Spock
-Kirk actually listens to Spock’s rants and often proves that he has considered all the information provided by him by mentioning them or even using them on the search for a solution
-engages in lively discussions
-finds Spock’s nature intriguing
-Spock asks a lot of questions about Vulcans in an attempt to learn more about his culture through people who have lived it
M’Koy & Spock
-irritated by the amount of over information Spock practices
-> might try to subtly cut him off to bring the conversation further, but this could lead to Spock often having something to add on that he would’ve gotten to if he hadn’t been cut off
-also finds him intriguing though, you don’t see a Vulcan-human-hybrid everyday, let alone be friends with them
-> might attempt to subtly study him to better understand how the two species’ have mixed within him
-Spock asks a lot of questions about Vulcans in an attempt to learn more about his culture through people who have lived it
-M’Koy finds comfort in being around him because he is much more orderly than most of the humans he has to work with everyday
#They’re also on my artfight now btw🦫#just in case anyone participating this year thought “ah cool”🧍#/nf lmao I just wanted to mention it#I hope my notes on them are comprehensible lol🦧#McSpirk#mcspirk fanart#mcspirk au#Star trek#star trek tos#star trek fanart#star trek au#star trek species swap au#james t kirk#james t kirk fanart#Kirek#leonard bones mccoy fanart#leonard bones mccoy#M’Koy#Spock fanart#s'chn t'gai spock#human spock#well technically still only half but Y’know#Vulcan#Vulcan Kirk#Vulcan McCoy#Star Trek species swap

-Bones saying "he's dead, Jim" about a worm
-the mentions of Lin-Manuel Miranda as an answer for why Data is casting himself for some roles (iirc)
-Jim saying "Spock! Have I ever told you-" and Spock going "Tell me later🤫"
-Dr. Carol Marcus' "No no no nono no no no nono noOO NOOooo!" in the Hyperchannel Rag
-the overlapping singing parts even though I still don't really know what they were singing cause I haven't looked at the lyrics yet but I thought those were very neat
I've just watched Khan!!! The Musical! online and I need to put some sort of post out here for more people to hear about this because it's so much fun?? In case you haven't heard about it yet, it's a parody of Star Trek II The Wrath Of Khan and here are some things I'd like to point out about it: (!some spoilers!)
-Data has created this musical from a Watsonian perspective
-Data narrates the thing and takes on some of the smaller roles himself
-Kirk's voice is perfect
-it has made me laugh out loud multiple times
-I need the tap dancing meditation with Spock and Kirk on Spotify why isn't that one of the things on the selections😮💨
-oh yeah, there are exactly 30 minutes of selected songs from this musical on Spotify
-my favorite out of those is probably The Hyperchannel Rag, it's so much fun to listen to🦫
-Kirk reminiscing in his past days and the crew picking him back up and on track
#Khan!!! The Musical!#I still don't think I've caught everything worth mentioning guys you should totally see for yourselves#/hj#Star Trek#St thoughts

Since I am planning on going to a renfaire with friends this year and am going to be wearing my Starfleet uniform for that, I thought I'd try to make up for the lack of pockets on my Starfleet jacket by making an overdimensional tricorder out of cardboard for me to carry stuff around in :]

#Can’t wait for this renfaire now🦫#This is the first time I’m actually looking forward to that specific renfaire lmao#i love the idea of going there as a stranded Starfleet ensign being stuck in the past#Or as part of an away team on a pre-warp planet#I’m glad I somehow got the motivation to start AND finish this project more than a month prior to the renfaire so I won’t have to crunch lo#well it’s not completely finished yet technically#I’m still waiting for the spray to make it a bit more waterproof and I might work on taping the inside completely or something#Who knows#now I’ve gotta continue studying for my exams#star trek#star trek cosplay#renfaire#tricorder#cardboard props#SNW#star trek snw#Strange new worlds#I technically wanted to base this off the TOS ones but then somehow ended up with an altered SNW design instead lol🦧#I took inspo from both though I’d say

Some new doodles of Thesith and Atoss I did for artfight refs so that people have some color as orientation and cause I realized just the armor might not be the smartest design option for Atoss when he’s a scientist with no affiliation with the military🦧

Plomeek Soup
Thanks for all your kind words and comments last week! This is going to be a lot of fun. If you have any requests for specific dishes, please let us know. And remember, you can also follow us on twitter and facebook to keep up with the kitchen adventures. We’ll be posting pictures of the cooking process on the facebook page, so if you’re interested in seeing how the dishes are created, be sure to check it out!
This week we turn to another classic dish from a classic Star Trek race - Plomeek soup, a Vulcan dish. Most Vulcans, including the most famous one, Spock, are vegetarian. I would actually suggest that it would be logical for Vulcans to be vegan, not just vegetarian, but maybe that’s just me. I thought it was important to ensure that the recipe was vegan, rather than making it impossible for vegans or vegetarians to eat it by using chicken stock or similar. In addition, this is described as being quite a bland soup, so I have left the seasonings fairly minimal.
There are various iterations of Plomeek soup in the Star Trek canon; they appear to be a variety of colours and thickness. You can see all of them on Memory Alpha. However for this recipe, there was no contest. I had to make the original Plomeek soup, as thrown against the wall by Spock when in the throes of pon farr. If you’re interested in testing out its properties, you can always throw it against the wall, but I’d suggest eating it instead.

Replicate your own (Serves 2 as a main course or 4 as a starter)
1 onion 2 garlic cloves 5 carrots 2 small-medium sweet potatoes, peeled 3 small-medium beetroots, peeled 3 sticks celery 1 litre vegetable stock Salt and pepper Vegetable oil Parsley for garnish (optional)
Start by peeling the beetroots and then the sweet potatoes. Wear a pair of gloves when peeling the beetroots if you don’t want to get pink hands! Then chop up all the vegetables, including the onion and garlic cloves, into chunks. Don’t worry about making them too exact as they will all get blended at the end.
Start by sauteeing the garlic and onion in vegetable oil until soft. Then add the rest of the vegetables and cook for a few minutes. Add 750ml of the stock, reserving the rest. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer until all vegetables are quite soft, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Ladle portions of the vegetables and stock into a blender and blend until smooth. Alternatively, you could use a hand blender if you have one. When all the soup is blended, check the flavour and add salt and pepper to taste. At this point, check the soup’s thickness - if too thick, add the remaining vegetable stock as needed.
Serve and garnish with parsley if desired - although I’m sure the Vulcans would consider this highly illogical.

Hasperat
Now we’re talking classic Star Trek cooking. Hasperat is, of course, that well-known Bajoran dish which is said to be spicy enough to make your eyes water. It is mentioned several times in both Next Generation and Deep Space Nine and seems to be a loved Bajoran dish. Apparently the key to strong hasperat is the brine it is pickled in before serving.
You’ll see lots of versions of hasperat online - it is one of the easier Star Trek recipes to replicate as it is essentially vegetables rolled up in a tortilla. However, most of them derive their spiciness from the addition of hot sauce or fresh chilies - not a brine. I wanted to make a brined version to experience the full eye-watering potential of the hasperat. This means you need to start a week in advance of when you want to serve it, but I think the results make it worth the effort.
(Read more about hasperat at Memory Alpha)

Replicate your own (Makes ¼ pickled cabbage, which is enough for about 6-8 wraps)
You will need to start a week in advance.
¼ white cabbage 1 litre water 250ml vinegar 1 teaspoon of sugar 125g salt 3-4 hot chillies to taste, chopped fine (depends on how spicy you want it) Juice of one lemon
Start by preparing the brine. Add the water, vinegar, sugar and salt to a saucepan, and heat until boiling. Stir until the salt is dissolved and add the chiles and lemon juice. Leave to cool.
While the brine is cooling, prepare the cabbage. Remove the heart or woody stick of the cabbage, and pull the leaves apart, leaving them whole if possible. Leaving them whole will make it easier to layer them in the tortilla at the end.
Place the brine in a bowl or jar in which the cabbage leaves will fit, and add the cabbage, making sure all leaves are completely submerged in the brine. You might need to put a small plate or saucer over the cabbage to ensure it stays fully submerged. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of 4 days, up to 7 or 8 days. After 4 days, taste the cabbage. If it is not strong enough, return it to the brine. Keep tasting it until it is at your desired level of spiciness and pickled-ness.
To assemble the hasperat 6-8 flour tortillas (buy some or make your own - recipe below) The completed pickled cabbage leaves Baby spinach leaves Any other additions of your choice - suggestions: shredded carrot, more chillies, avocado, capsicum.
Lay the tortilla out flat. Add a layer of baby spinach leaves on the tortilla. Take a leaf or two of the pickled cabbage and lay them flat on top of the spinach. Add any other vegetables or toppings you wish, and then roll the tortilla up by folding in the sides and rolling it up. Cut it into two pieces and experience the true tongue-searing goodness of hasperat.
Flour tortilla recipe (Makes 6-8 tortillas)
2 cups plain flour 1 pinch of salt 4 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup boiling water
Combine the flour and the salt, and then mix in the oil. You may need to rub the flour between your hands until the oil is integrated and the mixture looks like coarse breadcrumbs. Add the boiling water a little bit at a time, stirring each time, until a rough ball is formed.
When the dough has come together into a ball (you may not have needed all the water), move it to a floured surface and knead for a few minutes, until it is soft and elastic.
Put the dough back in its bowl and cover with plastic wrap, and let it rest for 20-30 minutes.
Divide the dough into 6-8 balls and roll out on a floured surface until they are fairly thin (you could also use a tortilla press or similar).
Cook them one at a time in a heavy frying pan (you do not need to add any oil or butter to the frying pan). When the top starts to bubble, flip the tortilla over and cook the other side.
As each tortilla is cooked, remove it to a plate and make a stack of them. These can be covered with a clean tea towel to keep them warm and pliable.
Notes
The brine used for the cabbage can be used to pickle any vegetables of your choice, and you can also add whatever spices you like to flavour it
If your cabbage is too salty after being in the brine, soak it for a couple of hours in cold water
The flour tortillas could also be made using butter instead of the vegetable oil if you prefer
