Here is a #blastfromthepast. I cant believe i found these haha. About a decade ago I was an #apprenticeanimator on #PrincessandtheFrog. Here are some shots I animated on the #movie. Rough #animation and the final version. I #animated a lot of tiny frogs throughout this film haha. I was a beginner and totally freaked out that I was actually working on a hand drawn #Disney Feature film. It was a dream come true. I worked with #MarkHenn through most of the production since he was the lead on #princessTiana. I worked with Randy Haycock on #Naveen as well as with #EricGoldberg on a couple of Louis shots. Very small background Louis shots haha. It was such an awesome experience. #ronandjohn were directors on this film and I finally got to work with them again recently on #Moana! #animator #2danimation #traditionalanimation #handdrawnanimation (at Walt Disney Animation Studios)

I singled out this scene from my Calarts fourth year film because I had the most fun animating it. I wish I could have tied down the film a bit more because as I look at it now, it's VERY rough. But this shot in particular gave me a glimpse into how rhythm in a drawing can tie into the rhythm in movement and almost have a way of informing the animator of what the next drawing needs to be. There are times where I feel like the animation animates itself. It's kind of an illusive experience but I think all creative people experience this from time to time. It's the flow state, and there is nothing more fun than to animate when you are in that state. How to get there? Some animators can get there easier than others. For me, it's very tough because I let stress and all sorts of other things get in the way a lot. Super annoying! I think the key is to get into a place where you're purely having fun. Somehow block out the noise, and focus on something that is very fun about the shot you're animating. If you can do that, most of the hard work flies by! #cobwebs here's an old #walkcycle I #animated during my #disneyapprenticeship. As you can notice from the condition of the paper, I beat the heck out of this walk cycle. Often times I'll sketch something in, hate it, erase it, and do it over about a million times. Dale Baer was my #mentor during this. I can definitely see his style of #drawing showing up here. Anyway, i chose to animate this character because it seemed pretty challenging to animate human characters. Needed to build up experience with that. Plus I love the #disneyclassic #peterpan . . . Here's a little #inbetween #animationtest using #digitalanimation software. I havent dont #inbetweens in a very long time! I simply just took two keys and started #inbetweening out of #curiosity . It was interesting to do this on the #cintiq. This was the second set of shots I was asked to animate on Moana. I think I started these sometime Feb 2016 and was thrilled! Everyone on the team contributed to making these shots better, especially Adam Green, who was sequence supervisor and character supervisor on Hei Hei and Pua. I came up with several versions of some of the comedic shots and they kept getting better with each iteration. There is nothing like having a great team that you can go to for feedback and notes. It's always so amazing to me when I look at the final version of a shot compared to my first pass. They get so much better it's kind of embarrassing sometimes when you look at that first pass haha. It's very humbling and always makes me feel like I have a long way to go as an animator.. Moana was one of my favorite movies I've worked on. I still kind of miss working on that movie haha. Wow I thought this shot was lost forever until I came across it recently in one of my folders😱 After production on #princessandthefrog wrapped, the #animation crews were gearing up for Tangled on the #CG front and #winnietgepoohmovie on the hand drawn side. i did some quick #cgtests around that time to start familiarizing with #Maya but I knew I wanted to get better at #handdrawnanimation so I put everything I could into getting myself on the #pooh team. Yes in retrospect I kind of regret not working on #Tangled because it was amazing haha. But at the time I felt really strongly that I needed to improve my #2danimation skills because I thought #Frozen would be #handdrawn lol. So I showed this test to the #pooh directors, @stevehatguy and Don Hall, and was officially put on the team! This shot was helpful for me because there was a lot of slow subtle movement and tight #inbetweens which I didnt have much practice with. (at Walt Disney Animation Studios)
