Kuriyama Mirai: ISFP
Tumblr media
Start to finish, Kuriyama Mirai is a spontaneously combusting ball of emotions characterized by easily triggered Fi that slowly grows to recognize logic, primarily Akihito’s, as a result of various life-threatening events. Her character development runs parallel to Akihito’s, he learning to heed emotions and she learning to heed logic, which makes their relationship very productive for both of them. I’ve seen Mirai typed as ISFJ, INFP, and ISFP and quite frankly I’m not sure what all the fuss is about. We all agree that, yes, she tends to abstain from self-expression in an introverted way, yet has excellent emotional self-awareness despite her limited expression (that knocks out Fe-aux right off the bat). Now, if I may delineate my assertion… From here on out this post will contain lots of spoilers from Kyoukai no Kanata, so be aware of that as you continue.
Introverted Feeling: Seeks harmony of action and thoughts with personal values. May not always articulate those values. Just as Akihito is introduced through Ne, so Mirai is introduced through Fi. “How unpleasant,” her first and most frequent line in the anime, doesn’t justify the way she feels, but rather takes emotion as an unshakable fact that she expects others to accommodate. Throughout the anime, her opinions on unpleasantness are some of the few times she explicitly admits things about herself. Usually she tries to cover things up with poorly-thought-through lies, like lying to Akihito about the demon in her apartment, or by avoiding personal questions altogether. The second strategy serves her better with Akihito, who is only too willing to skip over questions and move on to others. This opens up a lot of room for foreshadowing by putting off questions like “Why did you come here?,” “Why are you so hung up on me?,” and “How am I wrong?” Mirai’s motives and grudges are also very personal, which makes her all the more stubborn in seeking out the Hollow Shadow (just to avenge Yui and gain closure), and carefully guarded against outside influences as is characteristic of Fi users with weak Te supporting it. Often Mirai has a hard time seeing new perspectives or taking an objective point of view because she so highly values and intimately understands her own. She is quick to judge people like Ai and even Akihito, even if she does not know them terribly well, and unwilling to change her opinions. Sometimes, like when she had to accept Yui’s death, her stubbornness of mind can be helpful and resilient against false external influences, but other times, like when she first met Ai, it can make her seem more self-serving and ignorant.
Extroverted Sensing: Acts on concrete data from here and now. Trusts the present, then lets it go. Yes being hungry and liking food is a natural human thing irrespective of personality, but Mirai does not just like food, she reveres it in a way only Se users can truly understand. The happiest I have ever seen Mirai is when Nino took her and Mitsuki out to dinner and the first thing she did when the food came out was gush about how beautiful the meat was and didn’t Mitsuki appreciate it and just look at it!!!! Her appreciation for food also plays into the way she thanked Akihito for helping her defeat a demon: by treating him to food with the money she earned. Along those lines, there was also an incident wherein Mitsuki got pancakes that Mirai could not stop staring at, and even denied wanting when Mitsuki offered. Not only is Mirai mesmerized by the mere presence of food, her Fi even denies the desires so clearly displayed by her Se-motivated actions (until she gives in and takes the food anyway). Often, her actions speak louder than words and even completely contradict her words like when Akihito offers her money from a demon Mitsuki destroyed and her hands reach and beg for the cash while her words vehemently deny it. Mirai also has incredible situational awareness and reflexes for an inexperienced exterminator when she defeats her first demon. Unlike most other exterminators in KNK, she relies entirely on hand-to-hand combat and consequently has to act and react much quicker to attacks. Particularly when the demon hides underground, Mirai’s senses are finely attuned to any and all changes around her to keep up with the demon’s unpredictable attacks. She is remarkably good at fighting at a moment’s notice which demonstrates an incredible connection to the present as quickly or slowly as it occurs around her.
Introverted Intuition: Sees possibilities in the external world. Trusts flashes from the unconscious, which can then be shared with others. Unsurprisingly, considering the strength of her first two functions, Mirai’s tertiary and inferior functions are incredibly weak. Her auxiliary Se without sufficient Ni to support it makes her act without regard for the potential consequences. This only becomes really apparent at key points in the plot, namely when she takes on large demons like the Hollow Shadow and Beyond the Boundary. When she went after the Hollow Shadow, she didn’t clearly consider the likely scenarios she would encounter that would impede her “plan,” as vague as that was, like the fact that the demon’s attack power was more abstract and mental than it was physical, and that Akihito would not be so easily put off from following her in. That by itself presented a massive mess of potential problems that Mirai did not even consider while single-mindedly pursuing her goal. Not only does her ignorance of potential consequences work against her, it also affects others (mainly Akihito). Her weak Ni also prevents her from considering possibilities that have no observable effects to her. She is fairly quick to judge Akihito’s stability with his “friends,” and even disregards him when he tries to tell her that she is wrong. All because she thinks he could be lying to her, which is highly unlikely even in the short time the two had known each other at that point.
Extroverted Thinking: Seeks logic and consistency in the outside world. Concern for external laws and rules. Mirai’s Te is so underdeveloped it is almost laughable. Probably the best manifestation of it is through poorly formed lies. Especially early on in the anime, she often tries to lie to divert attention from her true motives, but does so very poorly because of her poor external awareness. Usually, she prefers dealing with the world by changing it so the world has to deal with her more than she has to deal with it. Not only is she very bad at justifying herself, she finds it almost unnecessary to do so. With those she trusts, she explains the world not through objective facts, but through subjective opinions. My favorite instance of this is right before she leaves Akihito to fight the Hollow Shadow, and she is utterly convinced that Akihito is better off than her. She even presents evidence for her claim, but then she fails to recognize her own bias pervading her argument. She does not even want to admit that she could be wrong because to her, the logic is sound, and ironically, the fact that it is sound to her is exactly what makes it unsound.

Kyōkai no Kanata supporting characters
Also check out our detailed explanations of Akihito and Mirai!
Nase Mitsuki-INTP Mitsuki is one of the few characters in the series that can both understand and keep up with Akihito’s thought process, mostly because they share functions just stacked differently. Much of Mitsuki’s banter with Akihito assumes his ability to understand the basis for her arguments without her having to explain them (Ti) and several times she gives him only the information he needs to piece together a picture of the situation as she did (Ne). She tends to use Si to enhance her demonstrations of Ti by calling on internally cataloged information and sources, making her decisions more well-rounded and less susceptible to potential fallacies. Her only real uses of Fe, which she often ignores and even makes fun of with her blatant disregard and scorn for what people around her want and expect from her, are when she wants her brother to do something, and so complies with his simple wishes to convince him.
Nase Izumi-INTJ Izumi is a classic INTJ and one of the most well-balanced (and scariest) characters in the series. She operates quietly and only when necessary, and she always has a plan that she formulates far ahead of time in anticipation of how events will unfold. She plans this way based on vast stores of static information in her head that she collects almost unconsciously. Her Fi manifests in conjunction with her Ni to help predict how the people affected by her plans will react to their respective environments and adjust her own actions accordingly. Her grim sense of self-confidence stems from development of her inferior Se, which motivates her to act (as opposed to trying to predict everything and getting lost in doubt through Ni) as soon as it is practical to do so.
Shindō Ayaka-ISTJ Initially I thought Ayaka was an ISTP because of how much she logically justified things to herself, which looked like Ti. I was wrong mostly because she justifies things to herself based on what she sees and experiences, and uses logic and internal sets of facts to explain things to others. Her explanation style makes her an excellent character for the scriptwriters to use to describe important facts that don’t come up in the normal course of things. Like what exactly the Hollow Shadow is, or the Calm, or how the local exterminators deal with Akihito’s demon half. Her clearest use of Fi is probably when she meets Mirai and immediately tells her not to attack before Mirai had even introduced herself. Aya’s weak Ne tends to forget about important changes or omit some related information when she explains things, like changing the barrier outside her shop and getting Mirai lost, or “forgetting” to tell Mirai that the fruit demon sprayed nasty smelling liquid.
Nase Hiro’omi-ENTJ Hiro'omi is the classic smart-ass ENTJ. He is picky about seemingly random little details, like Mitsuki calling him onee-chan, and rarely if ever feels obligated to explain information he considers obvious, characteristic of many Te-dominants. His auxiliary Ni, however, while perfectly easy to understand for him is nearly impossible for anyone else, except maybe Izumi, to follow. It is all the more irritiating when paired with his slowly maturing Se, which makes him more willing to act on his strange impulses, including holding Akihito's waist, being openly incestual, and asking Izumi about his hunches about Mirai and Beyond the Boundary. His Ni also lets him keep up with everyone else, mainly Akihito's unwarned ventures with Mirai. Most of his serious Fi, that is outside of his idolizing Mitsuki and feeding his ego by making Akihito beg for information, comes out after Izumi's full plan comes to light. His ethical values, usually taken for granted, are so blatantly violated by Izumi's actions that he chooses to speak out against her, before thinking that he himself may be biased towards Akihito and Mirai, and against the general good.

Kanbara Akihito: ENTP
Tumblr media
Animes tend to like EXFP protagonists because they’re expressive, sympathetic, creative, but still prone to experiencing internal turmoil. From what I’ve seen it’s generally agreed that Akihito falls into this group, a generalization I am about to argue against. True, Akihito shares many of the traits of the typical anime protagonist, but they take a different form in him than they do in ENFPs, a form that distinguishes him as an ENTP, and a form that I will elaborate on in the coming paragraphs. As to Akihito’s extroversion, he openly expresses his thoughts and observations, even at times an introvert might deem inappropriate. So without further ado, allow me to convince you that Kanbara Akihito is an ENTP. From here on out this post will contain lots of spoilers from Kyoukai no Kanata, so be aware of that as you continue.
Extroverted Intuition: Sees possibilities in the external world. Trusts flashes from the unconscious, which can then be shared with others. Akihito’s acting as a central character is largely contingent on his ability to offer new perspectives that other characters fail to recognize. His introduction includes his choices at a particular moment and how they would affect the development of the series. This clear demonstration of the Ne tendency to focus on the big picture at strategic moments signals a strong start to Akihito’s characterization. Throughout the series Akihito uses his Ne to get him and his friends out of tight spots by seeing the easiest way out, particularly when it is most difficult to recognize. To stop Mirai from attacking him, he flees, heedless of his pride and Mirai’s honor code. To lose Sakura when they were trapped inside the Hollow Shadow, he had the idea to leave Mirai’s tights behind to make her think they ran, as cliché an idea as it was. Mitsuki hints at his escapist tendencies with his fantasies about girls and glasses, which is also a sort of manifestation of Ne in that he takes so much comfort in his imagination over his His Ne is also apparent in his interactions with the Nase siblings, who are Ni users. He can usually follow their rationale, but it’s difficult for him to keep up with or anticipate their movements, and vice versa. Since they share intuition, but not intuition functions, they focus on the same things but perceive them in different context. For example, when Mitsuki tells Akihito about Mirai’s past with the Inami family, she provides all the information for him to realize Mirai’s motives, but she never explains exactly how to figure it out and lets him reason it out himself like he would a mystery novel. One could argue that he could be a sensor based on how much he loathes his mother’s “avant-garde” mannerisms, but I’d say this annoyance stems more from his inability to logically justify her habits (Ti) than his lack of appreciation for new ideas.
Introverted Thinking: Seeks internal consistency and logic of ideas. Trusts his or her internal framework, which may be difficult to explain to others. Often when Akihito judges articles for the literary club he simply states the first thing he thinks about the article, but doesn’t usually try to explain why he thinks so because it makes sense to him so why shouldn’t it naturally make sense to others? He tries to logically justify his decisions, particularly when they seem illogical, like choosing a “tactical retreat” over getting stabbed by Mirai for the fourth time and explaining his logic before escaping her completely. His logic system is also very flexible, which allows him to make quick decisions in strange situations. When Mirai was trapped in the Hollow Shadow surrounded by incarnations of Yui, he did not get drawn into Mirai’s feelings of regret and grief, nor was he confused about how to react to such a fantastic situation. He was the one to remind Mirai that Yui was dead and should have nothing to do with the present, using facts to rein in her fantasies. His interactions with Mirai in general really bring out his Ti, in contrast with her Fi, in that he rarely meets her halfway and instead shows her a different path. If he were an Fi user, their thought processes would be more similar and he would be less able to compensate for her weaknesses because he would share them. Akihito also has the no-nonsense attitude typical of NTs, immediately calling Mirai out on her poorly formulated lies and overblown emotional rants. When he goes into Beyond the Boundary to help Mirai and she scolds him over his recklessness, he interjects and disregards her perspective and emotions to assert his own where an Fi-aux would probably at least listen to her if not try to sympathize a bit. Also uncharacteristic of Fi-users, Akihito has a tendency to keep his personal problems to himself. Before being possessed by the Hollow Shadow, Akihito gives Mirai hints about his abnormality, but keeps it to himself, unlike Mirai who takes the opportunity to spill her problems when provoked.
Extroverted Feeling: Seeks harmony with and between people in the outside world. Interpersonal and cultural values are important. In the beginning, Akihito doesn’t have very well developed Fe. He doesn’t like sugarcoating, says and does things that may make others uncomfortable, and is at a loss when he has to comfort people (trying to stop Mirai from jumping off the roof). Akihito initially states that he “would have remained passive” but was unable to justify why he decided against doing so. This gives the impression that Akihito is used to rationalizing his actions but is beginning to learn when it is acceptable to act irrationally, and the process of freeing himself from rigid logic is what his development focuses on. His Fe seems to stem partially from his Ti, as demonstrated by the time he justifies helping Mirai defeat the demon in her apartment by saying "once you’ve grown more confident in yourself, I won’t have to worry about you stabbing me.” Despite being very socially demanding and just a bit hypocritical, Akihito feels a strong obligation to keep his friends safe, even more so because he is often responsible for putting them in danger. Thus, Mirai is an entirely new experience for him since it’s less difficult for him to endanger her (because of the power of her blood) and more difficult for her to endanger herself. His Fe becomes more pronounced as he tries to protect her from her poor decisions, which are easy for him to address since they don’t align with his logical understanding of her situation. By the end, Akihito’s Fe has matured enough to coexist with his dominant and auxiliary functions. When he comes out of his coma he first takes the time to understand the situation as the Nase siblings tell him (Ne), decides that his first priority is rescuing Mirai (Fe), then follows the most efficient path to do so (Ti).
Introverted Sensing: Compares present facts and experiences to past experience. Trusts the past. Stores sensory data for future use. Since most of his development centers around his judging functions, Akihito’s Si exists in a fairly juvenile state. His lack of confidence in it, like almost all other aspects of his personality, is established very early on when he notices the demon in Mirai’s apartment acting more aggressive than usual, which drew on his past recollections of demons’ behavior. There was nothing wrong with this assumption, but he still went to Hiro’omi and Ayaka for reinforcement before feeling comfortable enough to act on it. His weak Si may also have something to do with his views of his mother. I know I said before that his aversion to his mom’s “avant-garde” lifestyle is mostly a product of his Ti, but the very fact that he chooses to call it “avant-garde” rather than “impractical” or “crazy” is a sign that he recognized that her behavior was extremely abnormal, which further justified his opinion that it was wrong.

Yamazaki Sōsuke: ISTJ
Tumblr media
XSTJs, Sosuke included, are the generally the most stable, confident, and straightforward of the 16 types. This stability contributes to his fullness of character, despite only being present in the second season. Besides being fairly open and assertive around Rin, Sosuke’s introversion is very pronounced. He doesn’t try to instigate contact with others, and when he does it is primarily to convey facts or criticism. But before I get distracted and start rambling, let’s get on with this. From here on out this post will contain lots of spoilers from Free! Eternal Summer, so be aware of that as you continue.
Introverted Sensing: Compares present facts and experiences to past experience. Trusts the past. Stores sensory data for future use. After studying personality psychology for nearly a year now, I admit I usually don’t notice people’s dominant functions before the auxiliary, especially in introverts. Oddly enough, though, that was the case with Sosuke from the very beginning. Sosuke initially appears in the Iwatobi Swim Club, looking at old pictures of Rin and Haru before confronting the latter about Rin. There are two things I’d like to point out about this event: first, he wanted to have background before deciding on a specific course of action (perceiving before judging) and second, he chose to go alone to get firsthand evidence, free of possible external bias (introverted perception). The next thing we learn about Sosuke is that he can tell Rin’s future, but only Rin’s. His ability to anticipate Rin’s actions is often written off as the Ni ability to predict how the present develops into the future, but judging by the fact that Sosuke’s psychic powers are limited to Rin, I would argue it is simply the product of many years’ worth of information carefully gathered through Si. He judges Rin by his actions rather than words, which is how he anticipates Rin wanting to swim in the Splash Fest relay even though Rin himself denies it. Sosuke’s other characteristics are also typical of Si-users, including his politeness (first meeting Nitori and the swim team), family loyalty (suggesting Rin visit Gou), and tendency to make decisions based on what is immediately available (offering to swim two legs of the Splash Fest relay before finding Momo, his initial requests for his and Rin’s 5-year promise).
Extroverted Thinking: Seeks logic and consistency in the outside world. Concern for external laws and rules. Logic is arguably the most widely agreed upon aspect of Sosuke’s personality. He relies on it the most to express himself: critiquing when deemed necessary (commenting on Ai’s breaststroke technique and coaching him), bringing Rin’s romanticism down to Earth with facts Rin is reluctant to recognize, and resolutely justifying his beliefs and positions (warning Haru not to “get in Rin’s way”). In elementary school Rin admitted to Nagisa that he and Sosuke used to fight, and Sosuke would often be the one to drop the subject with his catchphrase “the fastest will win.” His trust in the simplicity and reliability of facts and logic from an early age indicates that Te is one of his best developed functions. But while this simplicity can get him out of trouble, it can also get him into it. When Sosuke decided to actively pursue professional swimming in middle school, he focused singularly on improving his swimming, thereby neglecting his health and friendships. Sosuke is goal-oriented to a fault, as some judgers are; he sets a goal for himself and is willing to sacrifice nearly anything to reach it, which is part of the reason he finds it difficult to understand Rin’s ability to compromise his whims and goals in order to achieve both.
Introverted Feeling: Seeks harmony of action and thoughts with personal values. May not always articulate those values. Sosuke has very good command of his Fi for his age, not because it is strong but because it is very strategic in justifying his Te without impeding it. Often his Te values clash with Rin’s Fe values, like in their argument over whether or not Rin should be focusing on the relay. Sosuke confidently asserted that, rather than focusing on the relay, Rin should devote “all [his] time for [his] own improvement” because, after all, “swimming… is an individual sport.” Sosuke’s disregard for the team dynamic in swimming recurs throughout the anime, from his quarrels with Rin over their first relay to his insistence that Rin continue his swimming career even without Sosuke. There were a couple instances where his Fi came out uncontrolled: demanding Rin let him swim the relay, punishing Nitori for getting Gou wet in the OVA, and overhearing Rin threatening to quit swimming in the first season. Still, most occurrences like these are too isolated to justify an argument for Fi in any other position.
Extroverted Intuition: Sees possibilities in the external world. Trusts flashes from the unconscious, which can then be shared with others. Even though Sosuke has not yet had the time to develop his Ne to a consistently usable state at his age, he does have one very overt demonstration of it at the end of the anime. When he explains to Rin why he decided to come back to Samezuka, he makes it clear that it took him a lot of effort to see the best course of action through his present situation when he was sidelined from his shoulder injury. Through his Ne he begins to understand that the time he will lose while trying to recover will ultimately take him out of professional swimming. Accepting this progression, Sosuke turns his focus not towards success but happiness, drawing him back to Rin. This understanding, working almost entirely independent of his Si, is difficult for Sosuke to come to since he’s so used to understanding his present life in terms of his previous experiences. Still, this application is complex enough that it gives Sosuke a sense of maturity above the other characters his age.

Nanase Haruka:  ISFP
Tumblr media
Haru's characterization occurs in two stages, with the seasons. The first season focuses on his soundness of character, from his well-developed dominant and auxiliary functions, proficient tertiary and inferior use, and relationships with others. Only in Eternal Summer do we see Haru's weaknesses clearly, challenging the stability of his Fi-Se through Ni. I don't think I need to elaborate on his introversion (feel free to ask about it if you have concerns though), so let's get started! From here on out this post will contain lots of spoilers from both seasons of Free!, so be aware of that as you continue.
Introverted Feeling: Seeks harmony of action and thoughts with personal values. May not always articulate those values. Haru generally places little or no value on generally accepted ethical structures, relying instead on his subjectively constructed moral values. His habit of stripping down to his swimsuit whenever he sees a pool or sufficiently large tank of water demonstrates just how little he cares about how others judge him. Although his actions may make others (like Makoto) uncomfortable, what matters to him is the fact that it makes him feel better. He rarely feels impelled to impress or influence others and expects the same of everyone else. At the end of Eternal Summer when Makoto confronts him with concerns about Haru's future, Haru interprets Makoto's worry and offered help as an attempt to take control of his life, implying that Makoto doesn't trust Haru enough to make his own decisions. Haru, with his introverted ethical methodology, gets offended because he sees everything he does for himself as justifiable under this model, making it easy for him to dismiss his friends' skepticism since they "don't understand." At the beginning of the anime, he firmly asserts that he "only swims free" regardless of how others try to sway him. Rin only gets him to do the relay in the first place by sweeping Haru up, against his will, with Makoto and Nagisa. After the positive experience of the relay in high school, he demonstrates that he is willing to adjust his values slightly based on his new experiences, rather than sticking to a static, externally conceived system.
Extroverted Sensing: Acts on concrete data from here and now. Trusts the present, then lets it go. Haru derives nearly all his happiness from external sensory stimuli, namely water and mackerel. He doesn't have the fascination with whimsical speculation characteristic of Ne users, nor does he seek sensory stimulation to provoke some abstract, internal response like Si users. He enjoys sensory pleasure for the sake of the sensation itself. He feels most at ease in the presence of physical rather than conceptual stimuli, which explains why he likes being in the water, whether it's his bathtub or a pool, when he needs to think. He's even said that he doesn't swim to win, like Rin does, he just likes to swim. In the intro to the first episode, he focuses almost entirely on how he feels the water and how he perceives the experience of moving through it as he swims. He feels no need to digest or draw judgements from his experiences, he just lets them happen.
Introverted Intuition: Looks at consistency of ideas and thoughts with an internal framework. Trusts flashes from the unconscious, which may be hard for others to understand. Haru's obsession with his experiences as he experiences them leads to a massive deficit of Ni, which is why he has so much trouble planning for the future in his 3rd year. He concentrates so completely on the present that he never bothers to think about where it might lead, partially because he doesn't see any immediate, tangible rewards from it like he does from Se. His underdeveloped Ni also makes it more difficult for him to explain himself to others, as we see in his simplistic speaking style, and therefore harder for others to understand him, which is why his friends are so perplexed at his lack of recognition of his problems. Haru also has a poor sense of how patterns develop and how the past affects the present and the present the future. At the beginning of the series he tries to justify this on logical grounds, and only gets away with it because he finds few thinking types deft enough to contradict him.
Extroverted Thinking: Seeks logic and consistency in the outside world. Concern for external laws and rules. Haru's Te is pretty difficult to pick out, since as an inferior function its realm of influence only extends as far as Fi usage permits (usually not very far in Haru's case). His Te comes out mostly in the very beginning of the anime in establishing a sort of tsundere persona. When Nagisa first comes back and proposes they swim a relay, rather than personally object to the idea, Haru points out that the club doesn't have enough people. He uses this Te-style appeal again in trying to recruit club members, though his logic is too weak to be effective. Overall, Haru uses Te as many emotionally stifled Fi-users do: as a shield to protect himself from potentially harmful emotional stimuli, like those that made Rin quit swimming.
