Words of Wisdom
“Learning to let go should be learned before learning to get. Life should be touched, not strangled. You’ve got to relax, let it happen at times, and at other times move forward with it.”

July Reading Goals
Summertime is DIY time, so my reading list is a little light this month…
1. Doctor Sleep by Stephen King – I’m currently reading this sequel to The Shining and a bit underwhelmed. Of course, it’s hard to come close to the original masterpiece.
2. Through the Woods by Emily Carroll – I’ve heard good things about this creepy graphic novel, and it’s been on my to-read list for a couple years now.
3.

Notable Quotable: Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
Notable Quotable: Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
“The personal, as everyone’s so fucking fond of saying, is political. So if some idiot politician, some power player, tries to execute policies that harm you or those you care about, take it personally. Get angry. The Machinery of Justice will not serve you here–it is slow and cold, and it is theirs, hardware and soft-. Only the little people suffer at the hands of Justice; the creatures of power…

Six Weeks of Halloween: [Review] Flowertown - SG Redling
Six Weeks of Halloween: [Review] Flowertown – SG Redling
Length: 378 pages Original Publisher: Thomas & Mercer Publication Date: June 2012 Availability: ebook, paperback, audiobook Confession: I really had no idea what to expect when I chose SG Redling’s Flowertown as the last book to read in our Six Weeks of Halloween series. The vague synopsis I read at the time didn’t tell much about it, but it sounded like something I might like and – best of all –…

Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Thirty-Two Do you know what's simultaneously both best and worst about books with a post-apocalyptic setting? It's that they seem so damn plausible. Vampires, werewolves, demons, or ghosts don't really scare me but angry, desperate people do.

Six Weeks of Halloween: Bonus Post
Six Weeks of Halloween: Bonus Post
Here’s the good news… We’re in the Halloween home stretch! And here’s the bad… Our celebration of all things scary and morbid is drawing to an end. As you’re probably already aware, this is the last week of our little cyber soiree, and we have only one more book left to read in our list – SG Redling’s Flowertown. From the back cover: Seven years ago, a chemical spill brought the US Army to rural…

Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Thirty [Review] Horror Show by Greg Kihn
Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Thirty [Review] Horror Show by Greg Kihn
Length: 352 pages Original Publisher: Tor Books Original Publication Date: 1996 Availability: Digital     Most people probably associate the name Greg Kihn more with eighties earworms and the early days of MTV than horror novels, but as I recently learned, he has spent rock-star retirement enjoying life as an accomplished author. When I found out his book Horror Show was a Bram Stoker Award…

The Night Gardener follows two orphans, Molly and Kip, who are pushed by their desperate situation into seeking servant positions. Molly quickly comes to care for the troubled family, although she can’t help but wonder what happened to change them from…

Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Twenty-Two Review: Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes
Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Twenty-Two Review: Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes
We recently read Broken Monsters, the fourth novel by Lauren Beukes, as part of our Six Weeks of Halloween celebration. I chose this book for our little group activity because I’d read some of the author’s previous work and found her writing style to be absorbing and vivid…and I thought it might be nice to include something scary without a paranormal element for those who don’t go in for monster…

One of the best things about horror is that it encompasses such a wide variety of stories - everything from post-apocryphal tales of zombies and cannibal children to the traditional Victorian ghost stories. The fourth book we're reading as part of our Six Weeks of Halloween celebration, Jonathan Auxier's The Night Gardener is in the latter category - a delightfully creepy tale about two orphaned siblings forced to seek employment in a house under a dark enchantment. Best of all, it's suitable to share with kids. Don't forget to enter to win our giveaway! Just comment "Trick or Treat" on any Six Weeks of Halloween post, and we'll do the rest. The winner will be announced October 20th. Good luck and happy reading!

Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Fourteen
Six Weeks of Halloween: Day Fourteen
When I selected the books for this little project, the decision whether or not to include a thriller on the list was a tough one. However, as recent events in Las Vegas have shown, sometimes humans are far more monstrous than any fictional creature made up by King or Lovecraft. Tonight, we started reading Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes, the author of Zoo City and The Shining Girls.   From the…
