The latest episode of Our Opinions Are Correct is about how to write violence in your fiction -- from fight scenes to big battles. How do you show the cost of violence, and make it count? We talked to Lauren Beukes and Fonda Lee.

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Tumblr media
Bridge’s mother Jo was a neuroscientist who thought that there was an artifact called the ‘dreamworm’ that would open doors to other worlds in the multiverse. Not surprisingly, she was thought to be delusional, sick even. But, when Jo dies and Bridge starts packing up her mother’s stuff, she apparently finds the ‘dreamworm’, and, suddenly Bridge can go to other realities. Maybe even find out what happened to her Mom. Of course, there are others who want this powerful item. So, it’s not all sunshine and mystery, but, a bit of a thriller too.
Multi-world stories are always awesome, and also tend to break my brain. And, this one was no different. It was a really really fun read, but, oof, and ow… also, not a straightforward read of course. Still definitely worth it though, especially since there’s a such a mother/daughter theme going through the whole thing, and it’s done really well too.

Just finished/just starting.
I liked Afterland. My second Lauren Beukes book of the year, and just as good as expected. 9/10 would recommend.
This isn't going to be solely a book tumblr, or an anything in particular tumblr. I left tumblr as my old one was just a record of old things that don't really serve my new life well.
We don't have to carry everything and everyone forward with us forever.

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
I picked this up after seeing ads for the tv adaptation, and wasn't sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn't a time-traveling serial killer (I had thought this was a straight-up thriller, not a sci-fi-laced thriller.)
I liked it well enough after leaning into the sci-fi aspect, but the pacing felt really slow, because there wasn't enough of the cat-and-mouse aspect for me. The characters do their thing independently, so neither can affect the other for most of the book, which felt like a missed opportunity to me. Other than that, it was a fresh spin on the the standard thriller, which was fun.

Over the course of 2022, I've completed an A-to-Z pile of books from my and my husband's collection, all things I'd never read. It was my GISH Personal Challenge from Gishmas 2021. I'd thought about giving it up when GISH ended, but I decided that it was a personal challenge, so I should keep it up for my own sake. I know it's not a spectacularly huge pile of reading for a whole year, but I really wanted to recapture some of my love of reading that had fallen by the wayside with distractions like *gestures broadly at the internet in general.* I'm already deciding which books to put on the list to read next year, but it won't be A-to-Z, as there are only so many Q books to go around.
