The day before yesterday I was looking at statistics about reading habits in different countries (average book count per year, age, most read genre, etc) and then yesterday i came across a poll here asking how many books youve read so far this year and now im wondering:
The highest I saw (not just in that poll's tags but on other socials as well) was 365! With the person in question being a lil under 300 rn.
The lowest (and no shame here! I myself have picked up reading again after a long time and it's quite the challenge) was 1! But I also saw lots of people aim for 5.
The average seems to be anywhere around 30 to 60!
And the second most common bracket (interesting that it's also the one made up of mostly late teens and early 20yos) is 10-30!
Idk if anyone will read this but if u do, id love to know more about your thought process in the tags!
(Just pls be kind to each other and no fucked up elitism lol)

reading for fun
reading is such a wonderful way to escape into different worlds, learn new things, and relax, but sometimes it can feel like a chore. here are some tips to help you rediscover the joy of reading:
find what interests you: start by exploring genres, authors, and topics that genuinely pique your interest. whether it's mystery, romance, fantasy, or non-fiction, there's something out there for everyone. don't be afraid to try new things and see what resonates with you.
set aside dedicated time: carve out time in your day specifically for reading, whether it's in the morning with a cup of coffee, during your lunch break, or before bed. by making it a regular part of your routine, you'll be more likely to stick with it and enjoy the process.
create a cozy reading nook: find a comfortable spot where you can curl up with a good book and immerse yourself in the story. add some soft blankets, fluffy pillows, and ambient lighting to create a cozy atmosphere that invites relaxation and focus.
ditch the guilt: let go of any pressure to read certain books or meet arbitrary reading goals. reading should be a source of pleasure, not stress. give yourself permission to read at your own pace and savor each page without worrying about finishing quickly or keeping up with others.
join a book club or reading community: connecting with others who share your love of reading can be incredibly motivating and enriching. join a book club, participate in online forums, or follow bookish accounts on social media to discover new recommendations, discuss your favorite books, and connect with fellow bookworms.
mix it up: don't feel like you have to stick to traditional novels or lengthy tomes. explore different formats, such as short stories, graphic novels, poetry collections, or audiobooks. variety is the spice of life, and experimenting with different formats can keep things fresh and exciting.
embrace the power of rereading: revisiting old favorites can be just as rewarding as discovering new ones. reread beloved books from your childhood or revisit classics that have stood the test of time. you may be surprised by how much you enjoy rediscovering familiar stories and characters.
remember, reading is all about pleasure and personal enrichment, so don't stress about meeting quotas or reading the "right" books. focus on finding joy in the process and allowing yourself to get lost in the wonderful world of words. happy reading!

my only reading goal for 2024 is to stop putting so much emphasis on goodreads goals or numbers. Instead i want to take the time to fully appreciate the book im reading even if it takes me a long time to get through it, because thats okay! my reading is supposed to be about me! and not my goodreads friends who read a book a day or whatever, because i could never do that anyway
what are your reading goals for 2024?

Weekly Goals
I've been really lazy these past two weeks since summer break started so i think this is a good way to track my progress and productivity.
Complete a course on digital marketing (which I was ignoring for a long time)
Finish atleast 2 books
Complete atleast 5+ lessons in Arabic
Start attending summer course classes (also Arabic)
Clean my closet
Wake up alittle earlier (it's not gonna happen but let's believe it will)
Watch a movie

I spy with my little eye a new year with new reading goals!
…or more like the same goals, but I want to be better about accomplishing them. 😅
I want to read more of my big books over 500 pages and not be scared to take a little longer to read a book. 🙄
I want to read more books I already own—at least half the books I read this year should be books I own right now. I think StoryGraph tags will make this easy to track.
I want to continue diversifying what I read and opening my mind to new perspectives in both fiction and nonfiction. I think this will include diversifying what types of books I read as well.
I want to continue reading more graphic novels and nonfiction. In recent years, I kinda stopped reading these categories, and I missed it. Last year, I felt good about getting back to it.
Who else has goals that don’t have to do with reading a specific number?

[07.24.23] Currently doing a midyear check in of my reading goals.
I've been on a slump since last year and have only read 4 books this 2023. My goal is to finish 15 books (including rereads) this year and so I'm planning which books I want to read for the next 5 months and some other specific game plan for each book. ☁️

Fics on Goodreads???? Don't do it!!!
If you want to try to add the word count/pages read to your reading goal, watch this video and it can help you.
Fic authors DO NOT want their fics on there (or at least the ones I've seen talk about it)
--dont add them yourself. Don't review them on there. Spread the word.

I made a resolution for 2024: read less. Not set my reading goals lower, not just be looser or easier on myself. Commit to reading less. To slowing down. (For more on why I’m doing this, read my Book Riot piece on why I really had to slow down!)
I’ve already started doing this. Making my monthly to-read lists shorter. Spreading out my books in translation lists more. And honestly, it’s already paying off. The numbers were internally shocking (I only read HOW many books in November?!?!), but the mental side has been nourishing. I’m getting better at recalibrating to pick up my book when I want to instead of the constant knowledge that I have to, to have any chance of finishing it in a “reasonable” (hint: it wasn’t reasonable) amount of time. My reading has been more pleasant, mindful, and present. And it’s been lovely.
