Penthony - fic rec

Season 1.

The overprotective Anthony tries to keep an eye on Simon and Daphne even on the dance floor. He asks Penelope to dance because she's the safe option. Penelope has endured a lot of humiliation before but here she sets boundaries. She's always known that Violet is trying to get her sons to dance with her. Colin is her friend and he clearly enjoys dancing as much as she does. Even Benedict seems to enjoy their conversations about art on the dance floor. However, Lord Bridgerton doesn't even spare her a glance. Penelope's furious humiliated and she doesn't hesitate to tell the Viscount so.

The story could also go in the opposite direction. Anthony talks to Penelope durning the dance even though he keeps an eye on Simon and Daphne the whole time.

Violet tries to tell Anthony off for using Penelope in such a cruel way. Penelope defends him and says that she'd rather be used like that than dance with someone out of pity. At least Lord Bridgerton signed her dance card.

The Gaping Maw

When Colin Bridgerton had appeared in her library back in September, looking every bit like a fantasy conjured from her imagination, her heart skipped a beat not because she had mooned and pined and yearned for him all those years, but rather because there was a gaping hole in Penelope’s life, a place from which she had ripped her own family, and Alfie. A place where Aunt Petunia had once been, and Eloise Bridgerton, and every other person that Penelope had ever lost, by choice or not, in her relatively short life.

At the precise moment that the hole in Penelope’s life had widened into a gaping maw, the suddenly very real Colin Bridgerton had walked right into it, and had been swallowed whole.

If someone were to ask Penelope what was at the heart of the series of increasingly bizarre choices she would make over the next several days she would probably have blamed the concussion, and maybe that did play a role, but the truth was: it was the maw.

The one that nothing could fill.

Penelope could never let her best friend suffer, so in attempt to save Eloise from the ire of The Queen, Pen finally tells her the truth of her secret identity. Friendship with Eloise still intact, Penelope just might be able to survive the scandals that keep coming her way. That is until an unexpected turn of events sees her betrothed to a Bridgerton, just not the one she wanted.
