A discussion in a recent seminar—that actually had nothing to do with philosophy—landed on the the question of nociception, the nervous system’s perception of pain. This made me think of the Greek skeptic Pyrrho—famous for having engaged with Indian spirituality during his travels to India with Alexander the Great—who supposedly underwent a surgical repair and cauterization of a wound without any anesthetics… and even more surprisingly, without so much as a wince or a frown. Pyrrhonian skepticism seduces. His student Timon of Phlius, quoted above by the biographer Diogenes Laertius, reports that his teacher found himself annoyed at the abundance of dogmatic quibbling over what he thought were unsolvable problems. Pyrrho suspended judgment on the lofty theories about the nature of reality and engaged with life according to how it presented itself to him. Followers of the Academics (i.e., of Plato and Aristotle)—in whose ranks the Roman philosopher and statesman Cicero can generally be counted—claimed that Pyrrhonian skepticism about the world undercuts any real reason for living life well. ...Is this a fair criticism?
