More than anyone, children bear the brunt of regular Israeli military assaults on the Gaza Strip. During the 51-day war in the summer of 2014, 551 children were killed and 3,436 were injured. But these gruesome figures say little about the psychological state of the nearly 800,000 children who have survived the periodic bombing campaigns. After the final cease-fire that ended Israel’s Operation Protective Edge on August 26 of last year, UNICEF estimated that at least 425,000 Palestinian children in the besieged Gaza Strip require “immediate psychosocial and child protection support.”

a prayer for the church from a queer christian

Father, I thank you for the way you made me, and for the ways I grow as I journey by your side. 

I pray that as I grow in faith with you, that I grow in forgiveness and patience. I ask for patience so as not to grow frustrated with my siblings in Christ, and a forgiving spirit so that I do not grow weary of them as they slip in coming to accept difference in their churches.

I pray for the churches that have accepted their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, asexual, pansexual, and so forth, brothers, sisters, and siblings; that they will be adequately equipped to face the brunt of criticism and to support their members. 

I pray for the churches that are debating our place in their congregations, that they may embrace the guidance of your love; you, who welcomes all as they are. 

I pray for the churches that have rejected us. I pray that they find compassion and understanding for their LGBTQ siblings in Christ.

I pray for every closeted Christian, in churches that are accepting, and in those that are not. I ask that you protect them and comfort them as we work to change the church so that they will not have to fear rejection from within its walls any longer. 

In Christ’s name, amen.

Especially after psychological abuse, survivors may spend months analyzing themselves and worrying that they might have actually been at fault. They may even suspect themselves of being a narcissist or a sociopath. A lot of this has to do with the sense of defectiveness that abusers instill in their targets. When someone you love betrays you, criticizes you, ignores you, or cheats on you, the default message absorbed is “something must be wrong with me”. But the truth is, when someone does those things, they are showing you what’s wrong with them–not you. They are revealing their own psychological damage and attachment issues. As you begin to accept this, you will stop worrying so much about yourself and instead learn how to offer yourself love. When we judge or distrust ourselves, we are only strengthening the message left behind by the abuser. Far too many survivors get diagnosed with disorders they don’t even have, when really it’s just unresolved trauma that needs your love and care.”
