Haibun for an Easy Girl
Green grows over the earliest years. I found myself running down dark Mississippi streets, diving into ditches as headlights looked on. Cigarette smoke turned stale from bad kisses. The first drag always smells the best. Mystery spirits combined into hazy days and dark nights. Did I find a personality from their hands being down my pants? Do you think I felt pretty? Long dusty roads, but all I saw was pines. Made me think of leadbelly, places where I wasn't ‘sposed to be. Mama never found out, but everyone could smell the smoke that clung to me. Purity had left by the time I was a teen. Spent the green years chasing the blue, but once I found it I wanted the growth back. Since then, I’ve been climbing the vines back into infancy.
Now, I find that a new color is forming, more passion and will. A fog of violet has me in its throes. Every road brings a challenge, a new path. I keep pulling the Ace of Wands, a creative spark I can’t escape. It tells me to follow the fire. My soul burns inside. Last time I reached through the brazier of my creation, my skin melted to bone. Maybe one of these days, I’ll dive back in that old ditch to hide from gossips.
Crisp grass touches me
One day I’ll feel like flower
For now I’m just me

Summer
The burning sun sends its rays
To places I’ve long forgotten
Abandoned to the crypt of memory
For fear I might be rotten
But I dream like all the others
Of building a golden life
Impressing the kids and their mothers
Who filled childhood with strife
It knocks the wind from my chest
The promise of June
Healing through rest
Listening to night bugs croon
The sun, she rises
Shouting in my ear
DROP YOUR GUISES
UNEARTH YOUR FEAR
You know who you are
And what you must do
Don’t have to stray far
To find the rest too

Aphrodite; Prayer to protect your heart
Blessed Aphrodite,
Goddess of Love, born of seafoam and starlight,
I come to you with an open heart,
Wounded by longing, yet still beating with hope.
Let not false love find purchase in my spirit,
Nor cold hands hold what is meant to burn with warmth.
Teach me to love without losing myself,
To give with wisdom, to receive without fear.
Guard my heart from those who would break it in carelessness,
And guide me to those who cherish with truth and tenderness.
In moments of loneliness, be my comfort.
In the storm of emotion, be my calm.
Aphrodite, divine protector of the heart,
Hear my prayer and hold me close.
May your beauty surround me, and your strength dwell within me.

Spring
Goddess of Spring
Thaw my winter heart
Grown bleak from leafless trees and lifeless skies,
Make it whole and new.
Fill me with damp moss and honeycomb
Turn these icicle tears to April showers
Let me nourish the land back to spectacular green
These hands can heal, can’t they?
Spin spider silk through my thoughts
Glistening airy bliss
Filling my head with the lonely wind’s whispers,
Let me keep her company.
When I hear the crescendos of bird song,
Let me sing with them.
Plant stems in my veins,
sending petals into bloom from my mouth
Lacing my words with nectar,
So that those who listen entangle in the vines of my cloying spell
Unable to escape my sweetness.
Allow me to warm the world
As if I were Spring too.
