What factors contribute to Homelessness?
The state's high cost of living, along with income inequality, contributes to homelessness. Many people are unable to afford basic necessities, including housing, despite being employed!
Mental Health and substance abuse. Reports say that most homeless take in substances to deal with their mental illness. These bad habits of substance abuse are taken with them on the streets and influence others.
Shortage of resources, including shelters, healthcare services, and job training programs contribute to this issue.
Any natural disasters such as wildfires and earthquakes, contribute to homelessness.
COVID-19 pandemic made this issue bigger by causing job losses, economic instability, disruptions to social services, and health care bills.

How did this become a problem???
Things were slightly groovy in the 1970s, but by the 1980s, it was evident that homelessness was not just a temporary issue.
Homelessness has always been around, but in the modern era, it didn't become such a big problem until the 80s. In the 70s, every low-income household had a supply of affordable units. This policy helped keep most people off the streets. What is now known as the modern era of homelessness emerged in the 1980s. Mortgages/ Rent increased while wages didn't increase cash flow.
"There were many factors, including the federal government deciding to聽slash the budget聽for affordable housing. By then the California state government had significantly cut taxes and聽gutted social programs, including for state-funded mental institutions, resulting in thousands of people with mental illnesses and other difficulties struggling to make it on their own."
This quote is from the following article down below, California's actions affect the homeless population into becoming a major crisis for the state.
