The polished stone rested in the shade of a nearby oak tree. Engraved in the monument was an old-fashioned name and two years. The second date echoed in the young girl’s mind. 'Five years before I was born,' the girl thought sadly as she followed her mother to the grave. She said nothing, just set her bundle of silk flowers beside the cold stone. It seemed that even her dog understood the solemnity of the occasion, for the miniature beagle quietly stayed beside its young owner rather than follow the trail of a long-forgotten rabbit. Tears flowed freely from two pairs of human eyes. The mother silently relived old memories while the daughter wished she had memories of the man buried six feet beneath the engraved stone. . . .

. . . A mother sat on the curb, horrified. The medics pulled a small, lifeless body from the wrecked car. A whimpering beagle was clutched in the corpse’s arms. The small animal would later die before its time from internal injuries, though the mother would always attribute it to a broken heart. My daughter, the silent cry ran through her head once again. . . .

. . . Far away from the land of the living, an old man and a young girl sat beneath an oak tree. A young beagle howled as it scented a rabbit and followed the freshly-made trail. The man began telling his granddaughter a story. The girl listened intently . . . and the two of them began making memories.
