thinking abt their trickster-hunting span of time. ashe is gone the trickster is trailing devastation around the country. the three of them are so fucking alone except for maybe one or two adults around them who are sympathetic (tide. cross, maybe mato. that's it.). they are taking on roles too big and heavy for themselves. they're dropping out of high school due to unexpected family tragedy. they've got weapons that aren't blunted anymore and a kill order in their back pocket. they're promising their director that this is their mess, they can clean it up (they probably won't be able to save him but any fucking chance is better than executing him the first chance possible), think of how good it would spin for the prt's reputation. you know what we can do, you can't waste the prime force on this when there's the endbringers, when there's international threats. you've seen what we're capable of. let us have this. you can't afford not to. they're holding each other so tightly every night when they sleep. dakota isn't letting either of them out of his sight for months. william is getting maybe two hours of uninterrupted sleep a day and flinching at noises virion's back to barely talking and sitting with his back to walls and his eyes on entrances and not hearing conversations until they call his name a couple times. they spend months and months just heading straight into scenes of horrific violence and they can't even buy cigarettes legally. they're doing good work. they're pretty certain in a rational sort of way that they won't make it out of this alive but god they're going to try. they miss ashe. they see his face every day on tv and sometimes in person and it looks like a stranger. william wishes he could call his dad but how could he do that. what would he even say. they're competent at what they're doing. it's so fucking bleak. it's so cold.
