idk man.... mare as a "pick me fmc" is such a gross misundertanding/misreading of her character i have to wonder if the books were even read or comprehended beyond the "omg two brothers fighting over a girl 😱" romace plot.

red queen characters and their recession indicators:

mare: shes goes online and is bombarded with AI. ruth is sending blatantly obvious AI reels going “is this true??? omg!!!” daniel likes to talk about how AI is the future and will benefit everyone (it won’t). her brothers talk about all the ways theyre gonna make money from AI (theyre never going to). she goes to school and members in her group project use AI for all their work. kilorn keeps sending photos of them with AI filters. her notion and google and docs keep wanting to force her to use AI, and even when she doesn’t all her work is scraped anyway. literally NO escape.

maven: got a freaking b-arts Masters and then when he found out that didnt set him apart from anyone in the job market at all he signed up to LAW SCHOOL

cal: was rejected from jobs he’s easily overqualified for and genuinely celebrated when he was hired as a fast food employee where he’ll face daily verbal abuse from customers and be doing the type of grunt work people like his dad will use as an example to motivate their kids to do well in school so they won’t have to end up doing exactly that

farley: the intensified patrol of PT inspectors that target disadvantaged groups (like broke uni students and immigrants who won’t know the PT rules well) have her on a list because she never pays transport fares and she keeps cussing them out every time she sees them on her line. she is the tram line robin hood.

evangeline: her natural go-to insult is fat shaming someone in some way. creativity has died.

cameron: removed they/them pronouns from her bio last month (the tv is still glowing cameron stop playing around!!)

kilorn: started listening to late 2000s music ONLY one day. i’m talking prime pitbull and rihanna and gaga. like nothing else is hitting anymore.

iris: believes everything is cringe including fun and whimsy and is the type to comment “grown wo/man btw” on a vid of someone having harmless fun

shade: did the ice bucket challenge. no shout out to mental health awareness whatsoever

@lucy-the-cat its a turn of phrase that i use for every time those two dorks have a little falling out but they do strike me as a pair that would constantly divorce until probably shade ii was born. mare is always dumping his ass and cal keeps proposing to her and she keeps saying ‘yes.’ everyone is exhausted by it but being mean and prickly is mare’s love language. cal isn’t even phased by the divorces. he just starts looking for a new ring to get her for when he proposes next. one time he goes a few weeks longer than he usually would as her ex-husband and mare gets nervous and she’s like “what?? do you not care about me anymore?” meanwhile cal is frantically contacting some jeweller about why the delivery for the ring is taking so long.

at each wedding theres less and less people but mare was able to be walked down the aisle with her her parents individually, her three siblings and kilorn. she walks herself down the last one.

and, of course, cameron objects the wedding every single time

cameron the type of girl to find any reason whatsoever to be bitching about cal, i know she tried it with kilorn especially after cal and mare went through their first divorce arc, and then she tried farley, and then she probs turned to evangeline (who will literally bitch about everyone and anyone, no one is safe) and they became hesitant friends based on the icks cal gave them

I'm sending this into the RQ fandom waters

I've had this idea to redesign RQ characters based on diferent cultures over the world

First one is Eve, inspired by japanese samurai culture mostly due to bushido code, where the katana is seen as an extension of the samurai himself. It is also a symbol of the samurai's honor and status. A samurai without his katana was considered incomplete, and losing his katana was a great shame.

cant believe victoria aveyard cut out the best epilogue story in the broken throne about iris. i think the fans really deserved that deleted story more than anything and it really gives insight into iris’ character and who she is within a relationship. ofc i may be biased since it wouldve been cool to see myself in the red queen universe since, yk, iris actually (🤓☝️) ran off with me at the end of the series off-page…

MAJOR the burning god spoilers!!

rin despised tearza for sacrificing her island and their people for her love of the red emperor. then she found out that that was a lie constructed by a very racist and patriarchal nikara, who wanted to deny women and speerlies power and agency. and then rin discovered that tearza sacrificed herself for the betterment of the entire world, knowing that the violence against speerlies would never end, that the entire world would not stop until the island was eradicated, and it was either the island or the genocide of nikan. and after nikan, who else would she have to slaughter? and THEN rin found out that the red emperor and tearza were in love, enough that the emperor immortalised her in stone as his white empress, but hated her enough to erase her people, her narrative, her name and agency. everything, only because she killed herself to save everyone else.

and this is what gets me about rin’s death. not that she actually died, but because she sacrificed herself for the same reasons tearza did. history and the moving in vicious cycles and ohhh im sick. so it wouldn’t be just her that died on that island, it would be everything that she’d accomplished. for all of rin’s satisfaction throughout tbg as she swept over the country with her southern army, grimly pleased that she could erase vaisra and the yin legacy and replace it with her own dreams, her speerly taint, its so highly implied that nikara won’t remember her for any of that. she’ll be the girl who killed herself because she was so in love with nezha, and do we really trust him to uphold her story when it threatens his rule, his duty?

hmm as in outside the entire plot of red queen, as in just those two as characters? because my mind automatically went ‘yes’ but then it also depends how ‘outside of rq plot forces’ we talking cuz we cant forget thomas, his og bae, & how maven sees so much of him in mare and that plays a part in why he likes her and is so unwilling to let her go. but as a rule of thumb i think maven would be interested in her. two misunderstood emos with daddy issues is magnum opus level formula for unhealthy intense attachment and it speaks to my soul fr.
