i get that americans love their cultural imperialism, but it really does piss me off that june is “international” pride month just because something happened in the united states.

in aotearoa, june isn’t our pride, it’s theirs. marsha p johnson and sylvia rivera are their historical figures, not ours. the phrase that “you owe your rights to Black trans women” is true there, but here we owe our rights to (mostly) Māori historical figures. i have the freedoms i do because of the legacy of an entirely different set of people operating in an entirely different context at entirely different times.

But because of american cultural imperialism, most queer people in Aotearoa don’t even know our own queer history. Carmen Rupe, Ngahuia Te Awekotuku, the Dorian Society, Gillian Laundon, Georgina Beyer, and the Wolfenden Association are some of our queer history. We should know their names! we should know what they did for us! but because of the power of the american imperial machine, we don’t.

our national pride month should be july, the month that the Homosexual Law Reform Act passed in 1986. our two largest cities hold their pride festivals in february and march, respectively. american queer history has very little (or nothing, depending on who you ask) to do with our queer history. anecdotally, from my own queries, queer youth in aotearoa know more about american queer history than our own.

anyway, happy pride, americans. i’m truly sorry that most of you don’t see the negative impact your nation’s culture has on the rest of the world. and to the rest of the world reading this, try searching for your own country and culture’s queer history, don’t accept the american narratives as your own. we deserve our own histories divorced from the cultural hegemony of the USA.

I find I'm often tripping over myself trying to put words to feelings, and it's usually a huge struggle for me. Today, I got to verbalize some stuff, and I figured why the hell not just throw it into the endless sea of posts on Tumblr? If anyone resonates with this... cool. If not, this is mostly just for my benefit anyway.

There are so many parts of myself that I have lost to the act of staying alive. I have had to keep moving for so long that anything which wsn't directly aiding in my survival was put down and forgotten. I have lost people, and things, but there will always be more people to meet, and there will always be new things to have... but my *hobbies*, those that weren't turned into coping mechanisms, are nothing more than faded memories. I see them not as things I used to do for enjoyment, but as blurry nearly forgotten dreams belonging to children that only exist in the recesses of my mind. Our systemhood has allowed us to keep moving, it has allowed for new hosts to be made when the old one tires, but things that once brought our soul so much joy have been discarded under the guise of having to survive day to day. 

When we were little, we wanted to be a geologist. We loved precious stones, and collecting them. We went to gem shows and took great pleasure in having a big collection of gems to show off to people. We loved knowing all the names of the stones, but now I'd be lucky if I could tell you which one was a common quartz. I know we were a veracious reader, and that we chewed through books in week. I know I have books that I still, to this day, would call "my favorites"- that we read over and over, but I wouldn't even be able to tell you what they were about anymore. We always wanted to learn an instrument and our mother, bless her heart, has bought has a ukulele and a kalimba over the years. Neither have been touched in at least four years. Survival is the priority, but I would give anything for the chance to stop fighting. To sit down and rediscover myself, and find what makes me happy again. 

I know I'm not the only one who is going through this, or having this realization, but there's so much going on outside my little isolated world that it feels like there's never any real chance to catch my breath. If anyone who took the time to read this is going through something similar... I just want to say that I see you. I know. You’ll find the time to breathe and rest and find things that you truly enjoy doing, not just that help you keep going.

Three white bison (or, it's ok to say buffalo!) at Bear River State Park in Evanston, Wyoming, including the new white baby! There was a white buffalo born in Yellowstone recently, but these aren't them. There might not be a lot of pictures of these because Evanston isn't as touristy as Yellowstone, but as you can see this conservation herd is fenced in, so it's very easy to find them.

Evanston is also pretty close to Utah so if you're in Salt Lake City, it might be worth a little stopover. Apparently, Evanston is known as the place that Utahns go for their...things that are illegal/more controlled in Utah...

Although FYI the visitor's center is being remodeled until July 1!

Permafrost mummies! All these creatures represent a real animal found preserved in the permafrost. There's something so fragile and special about the earth and ice reuniting us with an animal our ancestors would have been so familiar with, that shit makes me cry.

I've been stepping away from the Alterhuman community and it's making me think that 80% of the distress people may feel over understanding their identity goes away if you stop just spiraling over it by constantly questioning every why and how.

Honestly I think it's a thing I miss from old blogs where a lot of what was shared was mostly active experiences, aka, idk "I have a prey drive. I went on a mountain retreat with friends and processed rabbits we caught. This was a deeply spiritual experience and gratifying to my carnivore instincts" instead of "I confirmed marten because otter was 9% wrong on Vibes and I think my DNA is not human because I feel bad in my body. Here are 12 words I coined for my very specific precise experience of it." or other things that are more... Describing oneself without ever stepping outside of your own identity to actually experience things.

Maybe this makes no sense. I just think a lot of what the Tumblr nonhuman community amounts to rn is kinda paradoxical and ridiculous, especially with therians, because it's just a bunch of over thinking and no acting. Like no wonder you feel dysphoric about being an animal you've spent the last fucking 10h spiraling in your own head about deeply human concepts watching a deeply human screen. Tear apart a pomegranate with your teeth you'll feel better. Jesus. Put some enrichment in that beast.

Regarding Celebration (better quality close ups beneath the cut)

Every year, on the Solstice, winter was welcomed with a celebration. It was christened by a bonfire and a speech from the Queen's advisor. He spoke of his gratitude and reminded us all that so long as we carry a song in our hearts, we would make it through another winter. After his speech, the music would start... and my god, what a grand time it was. Dancing and drinking, singing and laughing... What a way to kick off the colder months.
