Ball chair – A perfect blend of design and architecture
Ball chair was created by the Finnish designer Eero Aarnio in the year 1963. Also known as globe chair, this creation is one of the remarkable designs of the 20th century. Aarino is known to blend the popular features of culture with the shapes of simple geometry. The unconventional industrial design of this globe chair lets it swivel 360° making it fully functional. When placed in the living room, the designer chair becomes the center of attraction. When this chair was presented at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne in the year 1966, the brochure described it as a creation of architecture and future design.
Features of the Ball chair
Eero made this chair with his own hands for his new home where he could sit comfortably with his wife and daughters. The original ball chair with a landline phone fixed inside can be still seen in Eero’s lakeside home built in 1988. The ball chair made its appearance in many popular movies like Men in Black and Dazed and confused. It was also seen in a TV series called The Prisoner in 1960s.

Unique Style Of Eero Saarinen
Eero Saarinen is known for his works in design and architecture. He is believed to make modern architecture a mainstream in the American practice. Saarinen throughout his career designed new furniture using innovative materials. The groundwork for his career with Eames was laid out when they bagged prizes for their first joint venture at the New York Museum of Modern Art’s Organic Design in Home Furnishing competition. His works Tulip collection of pedestal chairs and tables, executive seating and the womb chair have become the icons of American Modernism.
Saarinen wanted to eliminate the visual chaos of legs created by chairs and tables under the dining table. So in 1950s Eero Saarinen developed a genius solution to the slum of legs problem and designed one legged chair and tables. This is the first chair in the history of furniture design to be made with one leg. This silhouette was named as Tulip as a reminiscent of a flower. This wonder won an award in 1969 from the Museum of Modern Art. The tulip collections at the Barcelona designs are the perfect replica of the original designed by Saarinen

Your One Stop Shop For The Barcelona Collection
You’ve probably seen various movables on our site with the name “Barcelona” preceding the piece of furniture. This name does not signify our brand per se, it entails a larger body of work by Ludwig van der Rohe, a German-American designer who had produced these pieces after a critical event in the history of modern furniture design and city architecture: the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Spain.
This exposition was held for new urban development plans and architectural designs to herald in the modernism movement that quickly overtook the latter half of the 20th century. Both the furniture and architectural modernism designs that spanned from this exposition remain relevant today. This popularity largely involves designer van der Rohe’s contribution to this exposition. Firstly, not only did he design the signature Barcelona chair that was featured, but he designed the actual building that featured the exhibition itself.
Ludwig van der Rohe was a German-American architect who designed the Barcelona Pavilion, a building that showcased Germany’s designs in the 1929 International Exposition. Thus, this building is also dubbed as the German Pavilion. This building helped bring the modernist creation of a simple construction made of an extravagant material to the forefront. The German Pavilion thereby inspired other important buildings such as the Capel Manor House in Kent, Britain which is regarded as one of Britain’s first pieces of implemented modernist architecture.
Getting back to furniture, the German Pavilion premiered van der Rohe’s preeminent Barcelona chair. This chair is most responsible for giving rise to van der Rohe’s international fame and status as the founding father of modernism. After the success of the Barcelona Chair, Mies van der Rohe went on to create a line of Barcelona products, such as the Barcelona Daybed, the Barcelona Ottoman, and the Barcelona Table, all of which we supply excellent reproductions of here at Barcelona Designs. Check out more about each product here:

Behind the Cushion: The Barcelona Collection

The city of Barcelona in Spain is known for a number of things. It is one of the world's leading tourist, economic, trade fair/exhibitions and cultural-sports centers, and its influence in commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts all contribute to its status as one of the world's major global cities. The Barcelona Collection featured on www.barcelona-designs.com, however is not included in the long list of the city’s contributions. The chair, table, bench, and daybed designs on the site were designed by German-American architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Mies originally designed the pieces to be used as Germany’s entry in the Barcelona International Exposition of 1929. The Barcelona Pavilion designed by Mies as well, served as the German Pavilion section of the exhibition. There the collection of furniture became iconic.
