Today I listened to a song called "No Milk Today". Beautiful song really, but it got me thinking about all the speciesist media we consume daily. Sure, the song isn't related to animals or animal oppression at all, but it takes something for granted. And that something happens to be the order we've imposed on animals whereby they become nothing more than commodities to be featured in a love song. Animals, their bodies and the things they secrete from them appear always in the background of our everyday existence. I can't remember the name of the author of The Sexual Politics of Meat, but she had a name for what I'm thinking. She called it the absent referent, I believe. We know that the things we consume came from an animal, long-forgotten, but we just take it for granted. Part of the background, of the scenery. It is there, but at the same time it isn't. I think not noticing the atrocities we commit on a daily, mundane basis are the sign of a terribly unexamined life. I'm sure I'm currently ignoring quite a few of them, but I strive to be better everyday. Remaining intentionally unaware is not only a sign of weakness, it's also disgusting.

some pictures from my antique french photo album that look straight out of a Ransom Riggs novel

i bought this album from an open air antique store (if i adore one thing that is collecting stranger's old pictures) and this family consists of a mom, a dad and their baby twins that grow up throughout these pages. their memories are now mine and i will take good care of them.

not to be that guy but uh…these are the cool plots brought up in Map of Days that seemed to be propelling the overall plot that either weren’t mentioned, solved very quickly, or just vaguely alluded to Conference of the Birds

Leo’s sister being hurt by Abe and him being very upset about it 

The children needing to learn to live in modern day life to be better voices for peculiars (they just say ‘not happening anymore lol’)

H telling the kids not to trust the ymbrynes and to not mention the prophecy (they do it anyways and it’s fine)

The fact that Miss Peregrine and the children were so mad at Jacob at the end of the last book 

Peculiars thinking about recreating the loop closing in order to live forever

Groups starting to think the ymbrynes are a dictatorship 

The kids in general starting to grow older and not wanting to just follow old rules to the point where they directly defy orders

Miss Peregrine stressing out a LOT more

Abe’s mysterious business as a hunter

How important Noor was to Leo’s gang for some reason

V being like…actually important (or in the story for more than 10 pages)

Jacob’s parents not accepting him as peculiar (a really good emotionally developed plot for Jacob but…)

Jacob hating being famous

Emma having her complex feelings about Abe and Jacob (she talks about Abe but it’s hard to tell how this has actually effected her)

Bonus: Literally any additional information about the children or Miss Peregrine’s past that might be interesting. We still know little about them pre-Jacob

Basically the whole story starts up with a set up for Jacob and Noor being on the run from the gangs as well as their friends who they may be getting in deep trouble with, all to find V who is a key to both Jacob and Noor’s past. Then this is all dropped very quickly and replaced with a new plot that will bring back an old villain. I hope that more of this gets tied up in the sixth book but, with all the plots that have already just been dropped or quickly solved, I’m not too sure.

yet another ramble!! ok, i love noor. i also love jacob. but personally i dont think they would have actually build a healthy and long lasting relationship. in the same way that jacob and emmas only connection was abe, noor and jacobs only connection was them both being modern day peculiars. nothing against the relationship i just kind of wish riggs had spent more time in actually building them to have multiple common interests rather than just thrusting jacob into a relationship with anyone he can. for me it just felt lacklustre because noor was such an interesting and well done character but it felt like she ended up getting boiled down to jacobs girlfriend toward the end. and the fact that most of her plot surrounded her saving the world didn't help either. honestly im just desperate for women with layers in riggs stories. just give me something im begging

Headcanon that what initially sparked Lilly and Noor's friendship was that the majority of people Lilly encountered- teachers, classmates, random strangers- would kinda start infantilizing her after discovering she was blind, but Noor never did.

Like, she was not friendly, at the beginning- she did not like or trust many people, and did her best to make it very clear that she wanted to be left alone. But she was also the one person in Lilly's classes who actually listened to 'No, I appreciate the thought and all, but I can do that myself', and only ever needed to be told once. They weren't friends, but Noor respected her boundaries and capabilities more than some people Lilly had known for years.

Meanwhile, Noor had no intention of engaging with anybody in school more than she had to, but did notice over time that Lilly 1) never talked any shit about her/gossiped about her living situation and 2) once publicly called somebody else out for doing so- despite the fact that they barely knew each other outside of class, and she had no reason to do so.

So when Lilly started showing up to eat lunch with Noor, Noor made a single cursory attempt to scare her off, and then just kind of went with it.

Also, follow up headcanon that Lilly ended up hitting it off with Millard later for very similar reasons- mutual respect, from the get go. She never had to fight to convince him that she didn't need supervision or protection or coddling- he behaved as though this was always a given, and was completely smitten with her as an autonomous, independent person.

(He did try and do a few things for her in the beginning that made her a little wary- opening doors, pulling out chairs, offering to carry shit for her- before she realized that this wasn't Millard treating her like she couldn't do that herself, this was Millard having a crush and trying to court her the way he'd grown up learning.)
