OH MY GOD YES. i haven't had a chance to yap about this yet so I'M TAKING THE FIRST OPPORTUNITY I CAN GET

I have beef with anyone who shows Sans fiercely taking initiative in regards to Papyrus' safety/health, because that's just. Not how he rolls.

Sans purposefully makes himself a background character. Almost every interaction with him is something from the sidelines, like walking up to his hotdog stand to buy illegal food and looking through the telescope in Waterfall. Those things are minor interactions that you can simply choose not to do. Much like this, Sans taking care of Papyrus happens from the sidelines. He asks the player to humor Papyrus because "he's been feeling down lately" and to keep an eye out for talking flowers because (like you previously said) he's worried about him. But Sans isn't going to interrogate Papyrus or push his feelings onto him like that because Papyrus has his own life and beliefs and its not his place to intrude like that. However, it IS his place as older brother to make sure that Papyrus is at least content.

This is also prevalent in the debate about how Sans reacts when Papyrus is killed. The two sides taken are generally either that Sans broke down sobbing anime boy style, or that he just didn't give a fuck. NEITHER OF THESE ARE TRUE. Sans DOES give a fuck. In fact, he DESPISES the player for killing his brother, considering Papyrus wasn't an actual threat. He talks about how if you have power over other people, then you should be responsible for your actions towards them and the outcome of those actions. So why did you kill Papyrus? All of the neutral ending calls (if you kill Papyrus) involve Sans telling you that you aren't welcome in the Underground or that you're essentially a despicable person. It doesn't matter if you spared everyone else and only killed Papyrus. You killed his brother, and for no reason too. However, he's not going to pull the "you shouldn't have messed with me" card and begin violently sobbing. He made a promise to Toriel that he wouldn't hurt you—even if you did just murder his brother—and promises are very important to him. He only actually attacks the player during the no-mercy route because you've literally killed everybody. There's nothing left for him to care about, defend, or return to. If you kill Asgore, the monster race is essentially done for. So he finally gets off his ass and decides to try and stop you. But that's just the thing—that's why his fight is so difficult. He's fighting you because if he loses, humanity is doomed, and that desire is fueled by his hate for you because you killed his brother. He can't lose. He's fighting you so hard because maybe you'll run out of determination and give up and leave, and he's the only one left who can make you do that. That's not even mentioning how when he's dying the only thing he's thinking about is Papyrus.

Sans isn't going to outwardly lash out at you, but that doesn't mean that he'll like you. Oh, you think Papyrus is uncool? Well, sucks to be you. Papyrus is awesome and if you disagree well then that's probably because you're not. Sorry bud.

I think Sans is a very good portrayal of what an older brother is. He teases and messes with Papyrus, calling him a babybones on multiple occasions, but if YOU genuinely upset Papyrus then Sans immediately tries to cheer him up. Then Sans passive-aggresively calls you out on your bullshit in private.

The date scene at MTT-resort is what really got me thinking about Sans' character though. That man was planning on killing you the SECOND you stepped out of the doors in Snowdin, and he doesn't hide that fact from you, either. Why? Probably because living in the Underground is miserable and he's ready to get himself and Papyrus the fuck out of there. Like Undyne, he knows that only one more soul is needed to break the barrier, and he's determined to make that happen. It's a spark of hope. So he'll make sure that soul is obtained as soon as it's available.

But then Toriel asks him to watch over the player and to protect them, and he'll be damned if he kills you after that request. This stranger put her trust in him and he promised not waste that... but also, he still wants you dead. Kind of. So instead of protecting you from other monsters, he protects you from himself by choosing not to end your existence right then and there. Because the simple act of not doing what he wants to do is protecting you like Toriel had asked. And also, hey... It's an excuse to do nothing. He loves doing nothing because there's no point anyways. Maybe you'll even turn out to be a good person.

I remember asking my sister why exactly sans cared to ask you about how you felt about his brother, cause like why would he care if someone didn’t like him? Then she knocked some sense into me because WHY WOULDN’T HE CARE HEHFHEHEHE

I like to think the question was also more of a “how awesome do you think he is” kind of thing, the answer is assumed to be positive he’s just asking to make conversation. Then if you come out swinging he’s like :) okay.

But what I wanna yap about the MOST is THE FLOWEY THING CAUSE OMG

Some like to interpret Sans asking about the “talking flower” is some sort of trick, and he actually DOES know about Flowey, and while all interpretations of that scene are equally valid, that is NOT how I interpret it/like to view it.

Sans may try to know everything about everything just so he can get the upper hand, but he still has- yknow, morals. He’s not gonna invade on his brother’s personal life just because he’s suspicious about this “talking flower” Papyrus refers to assumedly every now that then.

I really like the Forgettable AU in this way, how Sans, while he is definitely suspicious of whatever Papyrus may be talking about, he’s still confident in his brothers abilities to handle himself and wont be like “stand behind me….heh…i got this….” cause that would be dumb

He asks you to just “keep an eye out” since, while not having any good reason to directly interfere, he’s still concerned! AND RIGHTFULLY SO- CAUSE WHAT DO YOU MEAN “PREDICTIONS”????😭

I just love how these guys are characterized and how their care for each other is so grounded??? ITS SO GOOD??? I WANT TO LOVINGLY TUCK THEM INTO BED EVERY SINGLE NIGHT WITH A GOODNIGHT KISS???????

A wordy explanation of a concept of an au of a theory.

Are you excited for Deltarune? me too! Are you terrified for all your theories to get disproven? ME TOO! Thats why I decided to make all of my theories into one big au, plus being as self indulgent as possible for funsies!!!

If you like Sans raising Papyrus, Papyrus Knight content, Deltarune Papyrus is a Kid, all that good stuff, COME AND GET IT

This is just a concept that I dont plan on actually doing anything with, its just lives in my head constantly for the past 2 or so years- and I wanna show everyone my madness while I still “can” (deltarune tomorrow)

Im taking all of the realistic theories I have/have heard about for the future, and shoving them over to make room for “THIS WOULD BE REALLY COOL, SO TS GOING IN!!!!”

The main idea is this…Sans and Papyrus lived with their Grandpa Semi. Papyrus was a rambunctious 10 year old, while Sans was an inspired young 18 year old, recently graduated from highschool and ready to make a difference in becoming an Astronomer. But that was until their Grandpa passed away, leaving nothing but an old shop, and house in a place called Hometown. A place they would be renting out, but was currently uninhabited. Now it probably never would be-

Sans had 2 options now. The hard one, or the harder one. Either quit school and keep Papyrus, working at the old shop they owned while living in the house next door. Or sell the shop and the house off completely, go on with school, and let Papyrus be taken to a new home. He was…heavily persuaded to pick the ladder, as any situation with Sans right now would be unstable in some capacity. But after a lot of thought…Sans decided that Papyrus would be happier with him then with anyone else. No matter how unstable, Sans’ would make sure Papyrus didn’t suffer for his choice.

Sans told Papyrus all of this, to his …utter confusion. Sans always rattled on and on (as much as someone permanently monotone could) about all the great things he’d do, all the sights he’d see researching space. Sans brushed this off however, saying being an astronomer was just “too much work”. (See this hurts a lot because HE’S TECHNICALLY TELLING THE TRUTH HERE. Being an astronomer would mean going to school and ALSO working trying to support 2 people. He wouldnt have had time to take care of Papyrus, it was too much work.)

And so! they move to Hometown. Papyrus, at this point is incredibly rambunctious and comfortable! but only around family…He was never that great at making friends, and moving to a new area made this problem much worse. This proved to Sans even more how he made the right call. He could be here for him this way! …Well it had been about 3 weeks. The only times Papyrus went outside was for school, before coming right home and waiting for Sans to come home from work. Sans didn’t push, He understood moving to a new place, especially after his grandfather had passed away- it was all a lot to handle.

One day though, when Sans was still at work. Papyrus heard a kitchen cabinet open…Feeling more comfortable in his house than anywhere else on earth, he went to investigate…and found a deer…? a deer monster to be precise. She was tough looking with long dark hair, tall, crouching to fit inside their already fairly big cabinets- and also looked…frankly horrified at the sight of him. “I-im so- so sorry- i thought- well this place hasn’t- uh- no one’s lived here for a while! sorry!! Didn’t get the memo-“

A sudden burst of longing came over Papyrus. He’d never known what he wanted. He definitely wanted friends! what kind of a maniac didn’t want some of those? but they were so hard to come by…and finding them never sounded like much fun either. But this…this was too perfect. By pure instinct he yelled- “No you can stay!”

The deer stared at the floor, dumbfounded at such friendly and inviting tone, given the situation. Welp! new friend!! “Im called Dess!” “My names Papyrus” And they played and played. Sans always told Papyrus not to use his magic in this town as it was looked down upon- but this girl was GIFTED in her abilities. It made him want to get good, get better, get maybe as good as her one day!

This continued for a time. When Sans is off at work, Papyrus and Dess would play at home. She told him all about her job and how important it is, she makes sure that “things behind the scenes” go smoothly, with the help of another guy “Gaster”. Currently they’re working on a MASSIVE project that’ll change everything!

In certain routes of this concept, Papyrus goes missing to help out with all of this which is…fuuunnn…

But for more story related ideas, Gaster eventually gets involved, and instead of just playing with magic at Papyrus’ house, they make a dark world that is closed by Gaster before Sans gets home, because he and Kris are the only ones that can do that- For gaming reasons ofc. He usually just uses a bullshit magic excuse, THATS HOW A LOT OF THINGS GO HERE- Gaster is just working with code but to keep up the illusion of cool things, he lies a lot and is kinda awful in this. I mean he literally takes children to use in his game- HE DOESN’T SEE THEM AS REAL CAUSE THEY ARE JUST “HIS CREATIONS” BUT LIKE BIG DOG 😭

ANYWWHO my whole point is that this is all happening during the game, and Papyrus is doing all of the classroom closet and computer lab stuff while Sans is at work, but at some point Gaster is like “…nah..you guys have a day off! go do what you usually go, make a dark world in Papyrus’ house, no worries ill take care of everything!” and then Sans comes home early cause he says Kris can finally hang out with Papyrus- and- uh-

THIS is where we kinda lose the plot- Now the “story” from now on is just “blah blah blah Knight Papyrus and Knight Dess blah blah blah Kris joins them blah blah roaring happens yada yada the brothers escape to Undertale land forever

But the brother’s relationship is at the forefront of this entire thing thats for sure

At some point when Papyrus realizes he is actually the VILLAIN of this story, he just loses it he’s so upset 😭 like he thought he was helping, he thought he was a hero protecting the world, now he finds out he was actually directly responsible for breaking it- YEAHH THAT DOESN’T GO OVER WELL

All these ideas mainly come from song inspiration as well, and i’ve actually made a playlist describing some scenes and relationships I have in my head, so while you have the main vague idea, heres some specific stuff!

Because they just didn’t think about it all that much, they were young kids when they left- and despite missing their siblings they didn’t comprehend the pain theyd cause or for how long theyd be gone. This wasn’t helped by Gasters influence who always went on and on about how fine theyd be without them-

Honey Im Home(Ghost and Pals): THIS HERE, IS THE MAIN FUEL I USED FOR A GOOD YEAR OF THIS CONCEPT 😭 Cause at some point Kris gets coursed into working for Gaster too- WHY IS IT ALL THE SIBLINGS, GASTER??? Describing the amv in my head i have of this would take all day and honestly should be its own post because its way too vivid for its own good. “SO COME WITH ME…WE CAN CHANGE NIGHT TO DAY” Alright, man

The Deal (Mitski): This one’s I really like for a very specific reason…When Sans at the WAYY beginning was still deciding if he should keep Papyrus or not, he went on a walk and thought about how much of a gamble this was. What if the family that took him didn’t understand him? what if he never found one that did…”I cant bare to keep it, id give it just to give and all i will take are the consequences” This line is sorta reversed to fit the situation since he will keep him just to keep him and all he will take are the consequences that are dropping out of school forever- But the really juicy bit is when he sees the family Kris ended up with- he feels a little guilty because of how stable it is (from his point of view at least) like yeah sure they’re divorced, but they have so much love to give, and a reliable roof over their head- its a yeah

Star(Mitski): yeah

One Small Thing(My Little Pony): OKAY HEAR ME OUT This is a real good song for some scenes between Dess and Papyrus playing…The “One Small Thing” in this case is letting Papyrus help permanently and its all happy and YAYY lets go to the magical world! and then Sans comes home to the empty house and its like oh yeah, thats actually not good

…Well, Better Than The Alternative(Will Wood): This is another really bad fuel song cause oh my god 😭 This involves the part of the “story” where Sans and Papyrus end up in Undertale at the end of all of this! and Sans is like “IVE SEEN ALL OF THIS- THIS ISN’T MY FIRST ANYTHING” and again its just another song that needs its own post cause of how vivid the amv in my head is- I HAVE HAD THIS WHOLE CONCEPT IN MY HEAD FOR LIKE 2 YEARS I NEED TO BE SEDATED

EXACTLY!! get these things outta the tags you guys are smart and I need to talk about it.

First of all: YES. I literally filtered the Dreamtale tag because it enrages me so much. It literally would've been so good and so cool if they used the only two brother characters in Undertale as the two main brothers. Papyrus would've made a fucking awesome Dream and the content people would've made about him and Sans' relationship would have been top notch. Also, the story of dreamtale is good?? Listen it's sad that other characters like Undyne or Toriel aren't in there, but that could've been made up for with Sans AND Papyrus.

Second: OH?? MY GOD??? YES, A MILLION TIMES. Literally just make Papyrus the ferryman. I know The Riverperson could fit in that role but like, it's an au. There are no rules lmao. Imagine getting on the ferry and in front of you is this tall, eerie cloaked person, but then you look up and the skeleton (PAPYRUS!!!) is just watching you with the saddest, most forgiving look on his face. Why is it forgiving? Because he literally knows every good and bad decision you've ever made and everyone deserves a second chance. None of the people in your life had the chance to forgive you so he will, because it's not fair otherwise

heartbreaking sans was the breakout undertale character and so many aus left papyrus in the baby dumpster. HES A GOOD CHARACTER

YES I AGREE!!! listen I don't mind Sans aus but like I would fw them waaaayyy harder if they included Papyrus. I personally love both brothers equally (and take joy and whimsy in their characters respectively for different reasons) so if you include one and not the other it's kind of a bummer 👎

Let's use Dreamtale for an example. The idea itself isn't actually that bad and is an interesting idea for an Undertale au... but then instead of taking the two main brother characters and making them Sans and Papyrus (who are BROTHERS), they just make them two Sanses. That ruins it for me. Why can't Nightmare be Sans and Dream be Papyrus?? That would literally swoon so many fucking people dude.

Horrortale skelebros are by far some of the most mischaracterized skelebros out there. People will make Sans this cannibalistic sibling beater and Papyrus super innocent and/or non-existent. Not only is Sans NOT a cannibal in this au (the comic literally shows the mental turmoil he puts himself through in his effort to not eat human) but Papyrus is a super prevalent character and like. Is NOT innocent?? maybe a little oblivious but even then that's a stretch.

Fanon Underswap is straight up just a missed opportunity to make Sans and Papyrus even more badass than they already are

Don't even get me STARTED on the shit people do to Underfell. Like no actually, Sans and Papyrus are not in an abusive relationship in this au. In fact, they're basically the same characters except slightly edgier and they make penis jokes. Underfell Papyrus is literally described as not understanding puns unless they're "evil puns". That's fucking hilarious and you cannot tell me that man beats the shit out of his brother

The plot of Farmtale is HIGHLY underrated. The idea is that when monsters got out of the Underground, there were very little/no humans left and all humans civilization was destroyed, therefore monsters had to build their town from scratch and learn to farm. That's fucking cool actually??

Where do I even begin with Reapertale. How come everyone has a cool role EXCEPT Papyrus?? Do you know how much of a fucking fumble that is??? Do you know the potential that was wasted???? Why is Sans The God of Death and Papyrus is essentially The Second God of Death But For Painless Deaths(tm)? That's stupid. You're stupid. Greek mythology fucking did it right why can't Reapertale. Make Papyrus the fucking God of Limbo or something weird. I want Papyrus to be uncomprehensible like a biblically accurate angel but also simultaneously be the most forgiving thing to ever exist. Why can't he be the God of Consciousness or some other obscure shit and he's the only thing allowing humans to have the freedom to consciously make good or bad decisions for themselves.
