ā€œA lonely, quiet person has observations and experiences that are at once both more indistinct and more penetrating than those of one more gregarious; his thoughts are weightier, stranger, and never without a tinge of sadness. Loneliness fosters that which is original, daringly and bewilderingly beautiful, poetic. But loneliness also fosters that which is perverse, incongruous, absurd, forbidden.ā€
ā€” Thomas Mann, from ā€œDeath in Veniceā€, originally published c. 1912.

Re: your Spencer post that was posted in the main autistic tag: People accidentally write neurodivergent coded characters all the time. People who read the characters that way aren't diagnosing them. As a late diagnosed (at almost 30) autistic person I read him as autistic. It's a television show not a real person, you interpret it based on your own worldview much like literature.
You can interpret the character how you want. You can ignore the canon in favour of your own narrative, if thatā€™s the way you choose to interact with media.
ā€œPeople who read the characters that way arenā€™t diagnosing them.ā€
Thatā€™s not what I said, actually.
My post was, as I outlined, about people who do diagnose these characters. Yes, I know. Itā€™s hard to believe events happen, and posts are made without your knowledge. Thereā€™s a difference between ā€˜headcannoningā€™ something and posting elaborate write-ups analysing the characterā€™s ā€˜autistic behavioursā€™ based solely on stereotypes, and from a place with no clinical knowledge, especially as a non-autistic person. This has the possibility of causing real-world harm.
You will find many of these posts with a simple google search, if youā€™re curious.

This is re: the q&a if your still doing it. Are your parents autistic? I think I Iā€™m autistic and my dad might be too and it could be passed on. Itā€™s not so simple to be diagnosed since acess and insurance are the problem.
Sorry I havenā€™t logged in for months.
If youā€™re still curious, no. To my knowledge no one else in my immediate family is autistic. My siblings are very intelligent though, and people often ask if they are autistic as well when they hear about me since thereā€™s a widespread belief that gifted = autistic.

In regards to CM and Reidā€™s supposed autism, after a rewatch:
In 6x16 ā€˜Codaā€™, Reid discusses Autism and says ā€œ(their) brains pick up patterns that ours wouldnā€™t recogniseā€™. Reidā€™s use of ā€˜oursā€™ indicates that he doesnā€™t view himself as autistic.
Iā€™m assuming those who call themselves hardcore fans, or in fact, care enough about the show as to complain about Reidā€™s ā€˜autismā€™ being ignored, will have watched closely enough to have heard this quote. So Iā€™m not sure whatā€™s worse, the fact you choose to ignore a person when they say they are not autistic, that you see certain stereotypical traits and cry autism, or that you think being a 14 year old blogger with no clinical experiences puts you in position to be diagnosing anyone, real or fictional. Itā€™s incredible.

People who accept autism is a spectrum then criticize media depictions of autism as not being ā€˜accurateā€™ confuse me. Thereā€™s no better use of the ā€œyour experiences are not universalā€ meme.

Iā€™m really liking my film paper this semester. Unlike Sport Science and Physics, where thereā€™s only going to be one right answer to every question and youā€™re encouraged to learn them all like a parrot and regurgitate them into a multi-choice booklet during exam season, film analysis encourages a bit of creativity and individual thought. I enjoy watching scenes in my tutorials and sharing thoughts about what certain aspects of the mis en scene might symbolise, with nothing being strictly right or wrong. Itā€™s so much more engaging than listening to the lecturer go on about V02 max and heart rate zones for an hour, when the information could be condensed into half a page of bullet points.

Iā€™m curious what did your lecturer disagree with?
It was my tutor, not the lecturer.
I wrote about the term ā€˜Aspergerā€™sā€™ and argued that while itā€™s justifiably fallen out of popular usage for several reasons, for those that have carried the label of ā€˜Aspergerā€™sā€™ throughout their lives (myself for over a decade) it has become an integral part of their identity/personhood and they still have the right to use it for themselves rather than ā€˜Autisticā€™. She didnā€™t agree.
I think my primary issue with her comments on my essay comes from the fact we were encouraged to write openly and honestly about our personal understanding of our identity and what makes us, us. The exemplar handed to us was a fragmented piece of creative non-fiction from a previous student focusing on her experiences as a lesbian, with no mention of anything outside of her sexuality. It was issued as an A+ example. The tutor then critiqued my essay for focusing too much on being an Aspergerā€™s woman, and asked why I didnā€™t elaborate on my ā€˜cultural identityā€™ as someone with Asian heritage ā€” I might look ā€œAsianā€ but my family hasnā€™t had ties to Asia since the 1950s, and I donā€™t consider being fourth-generation Chinese part of my identity at all.
The comments seems contradictory to what was asked of us. Perhaps I am wrong, maybe there is something obvious that Iā€™m failing to see.

I really hate my Identities paper at Uni. My tutor conceded that my essay was thorough and well supported, but because she doesnā€™t personally agree with my perspective she marked me down. Why this neurotypical woman thinks she can dictate what an Autistic person can or should write about their experiences living with Autism, I donā€™t know. Itā€™s astounding.

I mean no disrespect to those honoured by, or otherwise involved with, award shows like the Emmys or the Met Gala, but it seems like a big slap in the face to hold these enormous displays of wealth and privilege in a year where so many have been left destitute by the virus. It seems in poor taste to make jokes about something that has caused so much suffering when you live in a mansion and make six figures a year just in passive income. All that money spent on garments to wear once, meanwhile there are many stories of people who are living in their cars and food banks canā€™t cope with the demand.
