I was keen to add some strong biblical women to our Story Sacks and when I came across Lucy's beautifully written storybook, and beautifully illustrated by Beth Aulton, I knew I wanted to incorporate her book into one of our Sacks! Reposted from @desertmumblog ** CHILDREN'S BOOKS ABOUT WOMEN ** For years now, my family has been collecting books about empowered women through the ages. They inspire and inform us, and help to balance out all the stories about men that line our bookshelves with no effort. Here are a few of our favourites. But one thing always irked me: where were the Biblical women? The ones to teach my kids that God has a plan for us all, regardless of gender? I mean, these women ARE in the Bible, but which 4 year old is going to delve into the book of Judges to find them, eh? So that's why I've written "Deborah and Jael". Actually "written" is the wrong word. I haven't written their story: God did. God created two women with unique talents, and put them in positions of influence and authority at just the right time to overthrow a corrupt King. Maybe a better verb would be "retold". I've retold the story of D&J, in rhyme, and the marvellous @beth_aulton_illustration has made the tale come alive like nothing else, with gloriously vibrant illustrations. Because ALL kids deserve to have these stories brought to them from the Bible. All kids deserve these stories to come alive for them in picture and rhyme. Not just girls. In fact, perhaps this story is mainly for boys. My daughter has no problem with the fact she has been created in God's image and that God has good works for her to do. But as she grows up, she will need the men around her to believe this too. I have three sons, and am passionate that they grow up knowing - like their sister - their unique value on earth as a child of God, and to respect the unique value and contribution of those around them, regardless of gender. Working on this has been a BIG SECRET that can now be shared! Such fun 😁 Reposted from @desertmumblog ** COVER REVEAL ** Oh wow, I can hardly breathe for excitement! . . . Back in 2017 I read @sarahbessey's incredible 'Jesus Feminist'. She makes a side comment about how you don't see children's books about Biblical women when you visit a Christian bookstore. . . . It's late night and there is literally nothing to do except go to bed - but since I'm permanently exhausted in the way that a few extra hours' sleep won't fix, I start fiddling about with a rhyming version of the story of Deborah from the Book of Judges. Why not? Sleep can wait. . . . Deborah, after all, has a story worth telling. Wise judge, fearsome army leader visionary. It's all good. And Jael killed a man with a tent peg. (Don't worry, I've softened that bit for our sensitive young readers.) . . . Fast-forward to 2018 and the manuscript is ready but publisher after publisher rejects it...until early 2019, when the wonderful @oupublishers agree to take a punt on this unknown author with her crazy 'Elaine Storkey meets Julia Donaldson' project. . . . And now, another year (and several hurdles) later, this book is actually being released! And it has an amazing cover, courtesy of the publishers and my marvellous illustrator @beth_aulton_illustration! . . . The whole thing is SO colourful and wonderful and I can't wait to unleash it on you very soon!
