GINA: My favorite book? Easy. "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen. Why? Because Elizabeth Bennet doesn’t let anyone walk all over her, she’s smart, witty, and totally unafraid to speak her mind—even when it’s unpopular. Sound familiar?

Also, the writing is sharp, and the social commentary is iconic. Plus, it’s literature. Not like that sci-fi comic stuff Nate reads with exploding mutant hamsters or whatever.

Question for Ellen: What student are you at school? What type/kind of reputation do you have? How do you find sophomore/school?

ELLEN: I’d say I have a pretty solid reputation. I’m the responsible one. Honors classes, extracurriculars, student council, community service—you name it, I’m probably involved. I get labeled as the “overachiever” or “perfect student” sometimes, which, yeah, gets exhausting. Like, sorry for being competent.

I try to be nice to people, I do—but sometimes I feel like everyone either wants something from me or they're kids who are just...weird. If people are like that, I just end up trying to avoid them as much as possible.

Sophomore year’s been… intense. The grades here matter now, so the pressure’s higher, the expectations are bigger, and don’t even get me started on group projects. I'd rather do individual work, because I could get more done during then. Don't get me wrong though, I love learning. I hate chaos. I survive on to-do lists and iced coffee. And honestly? I just want to get into a good college, keep my GPA intact, and maybe occasionally live a little without being called “uptight.” Is that too much to ask?

FRANCIS: *quietly, voice lower than usual* ...after the incident…? I don’t even know how to answer that. It’s like… everything just cracked. Like the world I knew—our world—was peeled away, and all that’s left is this cold, empty shell of it.

I keep replaying things in my head. What I said. What I didn’t say. What I should’ve noticed. And the worst part? I was supposed to be the smart one. But I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t do anything.

I miss him. I wake up thinking I’ll get a text from Nate with some dumb joke about school lunch or detention, and then I remember… there’s no message coming. Just silence. I feel… useless. Like I let him down. Like, I let everyone down. And maybe that’s what I deserve.

So, yeah. I don’t feel okay. Not anymore.

Dear Daphne

What was your first date with Nate like?

DAPHNE: Okay, well… I guess I’ll tell you. But only because it was kind of… sweet. And also chaotic. Which is exactly what I should’ve expected from Nate.

Our first date wasn’t anything fancy—we went to this little diner after school. He showed up late (of course) and tried to act like he totally had it all under control. He was nervous. Like, weirdly nervous. He kept fidgeting and making these terrible jokes, and honestly? I thought I was going to roll my eyes into another dimension.

But then… he pulled out this crumpled drawing from his pocket. A comic he made. About us. It was messy, kinda dumb, and adorable. He made me laugh. Really laugh. Not out of politeness, but because he was trying so hard to make it special—even if he didn’t really know how.

We ended up ditching the diner early and just walked around for a while, talking about random stuff. And somewhere between the sarcasm and the silliness… I kinda liked being with him. Just that experience made and helped me realize how wrong everyone's perception of Nate was. If you really get to know him, you can tell he has a heart made of gold, just in a different mindset. Just… the real one.

So yeah. Our first date? A beautiful disaster. And somehow… it worked.

4 Bricen: how is your home life like

BRICEN: *sighs softly, brushing a hand through his windswept hair*

It’s… complicated. Home isn’t bad, but it’s not always peaceful. My older brother, Émeric, is always watching out for me—too much, sometimes. Like I’m made of glass or something. He means well, but it gets exhausting. My little sister? Oh, Aimée is a whirlwind...loud, full of energy, always bouncing off the walls. I love her, I do… but there are days I just want quiet. And mom and dad usually aren't home, so I don't see them as often.

There’s a lot of pressure in our house. Expectations. Unspoken rules. And sometimes I feel like I’m just floating through it—keeping to myself, staying out of the way. I’m the middle kid, so no one’s looking too hard at me. Which is… a blessing and a curse.

I spend most of my time in my room or out wandering. I doodle, I think, I breathe. It’s not that I hate home. I just don’t feel like I fully belong there sometimes. Like I’m the puzzle piece that fits, but only because I’ve shaved off the edges. Y'know?

RANDY: Mm…Remorse? Look, I know I give people a hard time. I mess with people, I push buttons—I know what I do. And yeah, sometimes it’s funny. Sometimes it’s just… habit. You gotta find your place, and sometimes acting tough is the only way to protect yourself.

But do I ever feel bad? Yeah. I won’t say it out loud most of the time—what am I, soft?—but sometimes I go home and I think, “Did I take it too far?” Or I see the way someone looks after I say something, and it just… sticks with me. I don’t always know how to fix it. Or if I even can. But I feel it. I just don’t show it. Just not in front of everyone.

NATE: Ohhh ho ho, you want me to turn on the charm, huh? Well, if I really wanted to make Daphne go full-on flustered mode, I’d look her right in the eyes (y'know, all intense and mysterious-like), and say:

“You know, Daph… for someone who tries so hard to stay in the background, you kind of ruin the whole room by being in it. In the best way. Like—when you walk in, everything else just fades. I notice you. I always do.”

Then I’d hit her with that smirk. You know the one. Then Boom. Instant blush. Probably stammering. Maybe she tries to play it cool, but deep down? Flustered. Mission: Accomplished. I would be lying if I said I didn't do the same, but that doesn't matter!

MARTIN: Well, it's hard to imagine that because Evelyn and I were just two very different people trying to make it work, and we couldn’t. She rarely ever thought about her choice of actions, and it led to our divorce. I'd say if anything, if we stayed, the kids wouldn't be in a great environment for growing up...

[ i actually do!! i'll admit I'm not much of a ship person here, especially since they're 11-13 year olds, but i'm still open to the idea to create some small ships in it!

- i will say i honestly pair nate with a lot of people (perks of being a multi-shipper), but nate/daphne is my otp. i do hc nate's bisexual as well, so there's that.

- i've seen francis/teddy a few times, and it's not that bad, so i sort of ship that too. i also really like main trio polycule, it's super cute.

- gina/dee dee (i like it).

- i dont really ship randy with anyone in particular but i think he would kiss a man.

Oo I like the concept of Nate turning into a baby. I wanna ask for that au (to Francis and Teddy) how do you feel about the situation about Nate turning into a kid?

TEDDY: Well...we had to admit, this wasn’t one of the things we thought could happen at all. It's been overwhelming and difficult, but Nate’s been (sort of) patient with us. Other than annoying us when we’re walking in the hallways and doing wild shenanigans, he would be sleeping or drawing, which helps us catch a break. It’s good to know he still has his memories, so he knows what to do and what not to do, but I can see his anger for not being able to talk, due to his state...

NATE: I wa’e… (Rage.)

FRANCIS: Well, he’s happy and healthy and that’s all that matters for us now. He has some “baby brain” moments, ‘cuz sometimes he just babbles to make sounds, and he will play with his feet and anything else he finds. It's adorable and cute if you ask me.

How does Randy have friends? Why is he a bully, and does he bully everyone or just a specific group or specific people?

RANDY: Bold of you to assume I have friends. I guess I have people I can talk to, like my posse, but I don't consider them close enough to be friends, at least not in the way some friend groups are here.

I guess bullying just help take my anger out, and I don't tend to bully everyone, it's just mostly people that piss me off. Take Nate for example, the boy has an ego bigger than the school's negative reputation. It angers my that he's able to feel so confident all the time and sort of makes my jealous I guess...Another example is Francis. He just makes me jealous since he's so smart. He's also weak and timid, so it makes him easier for me to make fun of him. I don't tend to go and bully towards anyone with a feisty or aggressive attitude, like Dee Dee... [ flashback to the 'Christmas Carol' play where Dee Dee almost strangled him ] *shivers*

For Nate: Would you say about you as a student in PS 38? Like, do you consider yourself to be in what clique/a poor, average, good performing student? BTW You are actually quite capable of getting good grades, so why aren't you getting such scores? (From that one comic strip when he actually locked in for that one history test and got one mark off of a 100% bc he forgot to write his name)

NATE: Hmm? I'd say I'm an average student in terms of grades. I don't care as much as Francis or Gina to where I'm a full blown nerd, but I'm not down in the dumps with my grade to where I fail classes.

I guess I don't care about my grades since it doesn't matter much to me...or anyone. You ever just get tired of something you have to do over and over again? That's basically what school and work feels like. Why can't we get a break or have freedom for once? They just overload us with work half of us don't even need! Well, I guess some people do need practice, but I'm already smart enough! I could get a 100 if needed, I just don't tend to try that hard.
