I'm rewriting DoS and I've been really stuck bc I feel like my writing sucks but today I reread it and, like. It's literally fine. It's good, it paints an image and has a vibe. I just needed to not be stressed with college work, take a mental break, and listen to calming music. Let this be a lesson ig

explain your gender in 10 words or less without using boring words like “male”, “female”, “nonbinary”, “masculine”, “feminine” or “androgynous”.

NEW PFP I THOUGHT IT WAS A LITTLE DRINK WITH A STRAW :DDDD
OYDITSUZUT THAT'S FUNNY OMG
Actually, now that you mention it, I can see it.... I will never look at this drawing the same way
It's a zoom-in on a drawing of Griffith from Berserk climbing a mountain of corpses but tbh a little drink with a straw is way more full of whimsy ✨✨✨ :D
The backstory behind this drawing is that a) I sketched, inked, and painted it all while waiting for some stuff to get done before turning in my final project for college (yup, it took several hours...) and b) it's inspired by a drawing of Theo, climbing a different mountain of corpses, that I wanted to post around my birthday
I also picked this specific drawing bc I'm proud of how much contrast I achieved with the shadows on a fully white base + the vibrancy of the red (which you can kinda only see irl). Also, it has glitter :DD
I'll put the 2 full drawings below the cut (bc of the aforementioned mountains of corpses)
Theo, which I drew in december of last year but never posted:

And Griffith, my pfp:
Tumblr media
The pics aren't very good bc my room doesn't have that much sunlight, but I like to think you can see how I've evolved over the past 6 months
The reds look very washed out in the pictures, but I promise that they're really vibrant irl, pls trust meeee

WIP meme tag
Ok, I'm FINALLY doing this. I've wanted to do it for so long. Actually, the reason I took so long was bc I was gathering pics of my ocs to use for this, like how people do in fandoms of media that actually Exists. Yaay.
@squarebracket-trickster didn't exactly tag me on her post (check it out, it's very funny) but it was kind of an open tag and I'm jumping in bc I can.
I'm mostly leaving this an open tag so anyone can do it, but I would also like to (lightly, very gently) tag @cheeto-flavoured-pasta, @macabremoons, and @olliexwrites. If you want to.
Rules: make memes for your WIP(s)
Pls enjoy some DoS memes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
+ this one I actually drew before even thinking of doing this
Tumblr media
...plus a few B&W memes under the cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wow... that was...... a lot of memes.........
I got wayyy to excited and got carried away bc of how fun this was!!!

There's so much medieval fantasy out there. There's also so much victorian/general 19th century fantasy out there. And antiquity too, ig. Why don't we make fantasy of other eras? Wouldn't it be cool to have, like, baroque fantasy? Or neoclassical?
Catch me studying the ancient magic tomes at the library of Versailles. Setting off to slay a dragon with an illuminist scolar who's also a mage. Adventuring in a high-fantasy world with rococo vibes. Uncovering a magic conspiracy amidst altars covered in gold. The french revolution barricades but with wizards. The possibilities are endless. Please.

happy STS! can you give us some fun facts about how Seth's healing works?
Hi! Thank you so much for the ask! I'm sorry I took so long to reply
Idk if I've ever mentioned before, but Seth's healing is based on blood transfusions! Well, not literally, but conceptually, ig.
Like, the healers (which she's technically a part of) are a group of women who mostly give parts of their souls to heal the wounds of soldiers to keep them fighting in the war. It's kind of like they're universal donors (so ig type O blood). Except the "blood" doesn't grow back, and they die when they run out of "blood", which in this case is their soul. This is also tied to gender roles, which the story is about, but that's a lengthier conversation for another day
The concept behind Seth is basically "What if there was some fucked up type of AB blood that's so weird could never be used in transfusions? Would that be fucked up or what?". So, the only time she ever tried to heal anyone, it instantly killed the guy bc she's just Built Like That. But she can actually suck the soul out of any other living thing (like a universal reciever!) and then pass them on to any other living thing and heal it like normal, except she never indangers her own soul. This is also about gender
I've always been fascinated by blood types and their incompatabilities ever since I learned about it in school - not only bc of blood types but also bc there are so many other factors that stop you from donating blood. It's just such a needlessly complex thing for our bodies to do. It's also such a fascinating aspect of medicine. Like, if we didn't live in a world accustomed to these things, wouldn't this sound ABSOLUTELY WILD??
And why does Seth's soul do this? I purposefully never explain it in-universe, but since only women can utilize their souls to do magic, my belief is that she's nonbinary. Or trans. Or maybe her parents were born under the dominion of different goddesses and produced some weird magic soul amalgamation. Anything goes, really.
Thank you again for the ask! This was really fun to explain!!

I also think part of her role as a caretaker trapped by her position in society comes from the fact that she seemingly isn't white. It's never outright stated that this is a factor in the story, but I feel like her and Heathcliff having visibly darker skin contributes to their difficult relationships with Wuthering Heights. And I think the ways in which these factors interact is very interesting.
There is a kinship between them, in parts because Nelly is Heathcliff's (and probably also Cathy's) mother figure, but I also think it's because they are both inherently different from everyone else. But while Heathcliff was adopted into the family, which gives him some level of status within the manor, despite his abuse, Nelly is just a maid.
She's treated almost as something disposable, I think. She gets brought to serve Cathy and Linton when they marry, like she's some sort of posession. She was able to betray (in Heathcliff's words) Heathcliff and Cathy so thoroughly because, in a way, they never saw her as someone capable of doing that. In these types of stories, servants are always in the background: they may say a line, or do something, or even appear as a character's confidant, but they are rarely fully actualized characters, and not even the audience expects anything as big as a betrayal this significant from such characters.
Nelly says that butler contracts often span generations, so she likely was born to serve Wuthering Heights and would have died in its service if nothing had ever changed. And what she saw in the mirror is not only that Heathcliff and Catherine would end up ruining her life - it's that they would be so absorbed in their own tragedy that they wouldn't even care about her pain because it was collateral. At the end of the day, they were main characters, and she was not.
And again, I think a lot of it is due to her being a woman, but do I think it's exacerbated by her being a woman of colour.
Finished Canto 6 and I have Thoughts™ about Nelly
I think she's a great example of a character whose gender is implicitly relevant to her role and problems without The Woman™ being her entire (or even main, depending on how you choose to see it) thing. She's basically a domestic worker and a mother figure for Heathcliff and Catherine, and she does take a lot of pride in that role, being the Chief Butler and all
But at the same time, when she sees the mirror worlds she has the realization that at this rate her entire life, her entire being and identity, will only ever be dedicated just to caring for/serving other people. Yes she genuinely cares for Heathcliff and Catherine but at the same time, will her life ever be her own? Will she ever get to be Nelly, instead of Nelly the Butler/Nelly the Caretaker— Nelly the (implicit) mother of those kids? Does this sound familiar, wink wink nudge nudge
Also notice that Nelly isn't the Chief Butler of Wuthering Heights at present time even though that's where she began, she's the Chief Butler of Edgar family. She basically got transferred like dowry when Catherine married, and while she does seize the title of Chief Butler, she's still tied to the family hiring her at the end of the day.
Like it's interesting that while Catherine is the one who got married, I feel like Nelly is the one who has the role of the new wife being given a hard time by her husband's family. That thing you see a lot in K-dramas about how much the in-laws suck? Yeah that. And not just after Catherine got married, her entire position throughout everything is the person doing all the emotional and domestic labor for the sake of others and it's just expected she keep doing that for the rest of her life.
Nelly's design and role being contrasted with Josephine is interesting, too— Nelly is younger, wears a maid dress, is the closest to Catherine (young woman and new wife) before betraying her because she wants something other than being bound to someone else's family. Josephine is older, wears a suit, is still loyal to the dead madam, is very proud of her position in relation to the family to the end.
And I know Josephine didn't get a lot of screentime nor did we see much of her relationship to Nelly, but from the above I can guess exactly what their dynamic was. It's the Korean (probably eastern in general?) grandmas who have "climbed up the ladder" within their husband's family through age/experience + having a son and bully their new daughter-in-law even though they once used to be in that same position. Yeah if you know you know
And what makes it perfect is that in the end Nelly leaves while saying "You understand right, since you're a good kid, Heathcliff" (playing in Korean so idk what the exact English translation is but you get the gist). That is such a Mom Line of her to say but not necessarily in a positive way, literally perfect no notes

Guys google is being ridiculously fucking useless and my local libraries have the worst cataloguing system on this earth.
I am trying to find adult fantasy written by Black authors. I don't want non-Black authors. If you have recommendations, books that you know of, please let me know. Please reblog this post, even if you don't know of any, so it can reach more people.
Thank you!
