"All Life is Sacred and Worth Protecting": Justice League in Conflict with World Governments
June 23rd, 2025
Written by: Piera Landen
What do you do when an alien race lands on Earth and asks for asylum after their world has been destroyed? Do you take them into government custody for processing, or do you give them some land and make them a shelter? What if they’re one of your oldest allies? What if they’re much stronger than the people of Earth, so powerful that they’re called the “New Gods”?
The Justice League and the governments of Earth have two very different answers to this question. Last night, it almost resulted in a war between our protectors and our leaders.
At 7:03 PM yesterday evening, a ship began to break through Earth’s atmosphere above the wilderness of Karnataka, India. This was no ordinary ship, but the last bastion of a desperate race. The Justice League quickly intercepted the falling ship, slowing its descent and helping it land safely. Reportedly involved in the effort were the second and third Green Lanterns, Star Sapphire, Cyborg, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, and Apokolips natives Mister Miracle and Big Barda.

Additionally, Cyborg is seen monitoring the situation from the air. Superman was under the ship until just before it collided with the ground. (Image Credit: Saiful Mahmud, NDTV)
The ship carries the people of the planet New Genesis, fleeing from the war with Apokolips that has destroyed their planet. Apparently, they have come seeking asylum and protection. “The New Gods have always been among our strongest and most loyal allies,” explained Carlene Hodges, director of the Justice League’s public outreach team. “They’ve stood with us in our hardest times, sending support and reinforcements when we asked for them. We have to return the favor now.”

However, the governments of the world seem to have a different opinion. Agents from the Department of Extranormal Operations, a highly controversial international organization focused on monitoring those with special abilities to hopefully prevent any public threats, quickly arrived on the scene. The DEO attempted to take the New Gods into government custody until they could be processed and integrated into civilian life on Earth. But the tense standoff between the Justice League and DEO was quickly interrupted.
Shots rang through the air of the small clearing. DEO operatives had pointed their weapons at the people of New Genesis, and the New God Orion snapped one of the guns in half. Mister Miracle lept into action to shield Orion from the sudden spray of bullets aimed at him, while the second Green Lantern removed him from the situation.
It was too late though. The damage had been done. Tensions were rising. Does the Justice League stand down and leave their allies to be processed by the DEO, or does the DEO abandon standard operating procedure?
NDTV filmed the escalating situation, capturing the exact moment a DEO helicopter arrived on scene and pointed a turret machine gun at Wonder Woman as she stood in front of a group of New Genesis refugees. Green Arrow joined Mister Miracle in throwing punches at the same DEO agents Orion initially confronted. Meanwhile, Superman and the DEO agent, words indistinguishable, continued to argue.
“I can feel the tensions rising,” NDTV reporter Vasanti Chaudhri described live on air last night, translated from Hindi, as he backed away from the scene. “We might have to leave the area soon. It’s starting to look dangerous.”
Thankfully, Green Lantern John Stewart, one of the only two Green Lanterns to have a public identity, stepped in to cut off the brewing fight. “That’s enough of that. Refugees are welcome,” he explained as he began to build a shelter for the New Gods with his power ring. Stewart brushed off the concerns of his fellow Green Lantern, the second one, and continued.

Visible in front of Stewart are Superman, arguing with the leading DEO agent, and heroes Green Arrow and Mister Miracle, as they grapple with DEO operatives. (Image Credit: Saiful Mahmud, NDTV)
“I know you have a permit, authorization, a business card, a rulebook, and a badge. I know what that’s like–I have a job and badge of sorts too. You shouldn’t need a rulebook to tell you when something’s right. Otherwise, what’s the point of it all? I say this not as a member of the Justice League, or even a superhero. I say this as a soldier. Life… all life is sacred and worth protecting.”

After Stewart’s rousing speech, the DEO stood down and allowed the Justice League to continue creating a shelter for the New Gods. Stewart himself led the effort, putting his former job as an architect to good use. The area has temporarily been cordoned off by the DEO to prevent civilians from interacting with the New Gods while they, and the Justice League, determine the best course of action.

But despite the fact that the tensions between the Justice League and DEO have seemingly cooled, arguments online have skyrocketed. Two distinct groups have appeared online. One is calling for the New Gods to be arrested, taken into DEO custody, and the Justice League punished with sanctions for violating international law. The other argues that the New Gods are just refugees, and should be allowed to establish a settlement on Earth with the assistance of the Justice League.
Less than five minutes after the ship’s crash, the tags #NewWorld4NewGods and #NewGodsNewThreats began trending across every social media platform. These tags were soon accompanied by tags directed at the Justice League themselves and their management of the situation, such as #InjusticeLeague and #StandWithJustice exploding in use. John Stewart himself, after his speech, has been the direct target of much of the fire. #SiezeStewart soon began trending as people called for Stewart’s arrest by the United States Government, his home country, despite his status as a member of the Green Lantern Corps and the political protections it affords him.
There have been a few protests recorded in major cities around the world, but most of the unrest seems to be contained to the internet for now. The Daily Planet will continue to monitor the tensions as the Justice League continues building their shelter and the world governments begin deciding what to do. For now, we must continue to hope that justice, whatever that justice may be, will prevail.

Cassandra Cain/Cissie King-Jones: an examination of how FASCINATING their ship is and how well they would go together. - Part 1/2
I've been thinking a lot about Cassettes (Cass/Cissie) lately, mainly because I'm trying to plan out a bodyguard!Cass AU for them (I'll make another post on that later) and they're so overlooked. Guys. They have so much potential and are so overlooked. They're such good foils for each other, and I truly believe they could be a MONUMENTAL ship. Generational. Life-changing. So I'm going to put my thoughts into words because I want to and I need to word-vomit about these two.
All of the details are under the cut, but here's the long story short. They're basically like, perfect foils of each other. Both were raised in abusive environments that pushed them to reach unattainable standard for the express purpose of becoming either a superhero (Cissie) or an assassin (Cass). Both of them escaped those environments (Cissie was removed by CPS, Cass ran away). Pretty similar backstories there.
But, it's everything that comes after that makes them interesting. They have very different reactions to being a hero and wearing the cowl (Cissie ends up quitting the hero life and vows to never return because she's happier elsewhere, while Cass views the cowl as the best thing for her and a way for her to be a good person and help people). They have reflecting views on murder (Cissie expressly quit the hero life because she almost killed someone and didn't believe she had the necessary control anymore while Cass killed a man at 8 years old and lets the guilt of that kill drive her in her lasting quest to atone that eventually leads to her becoming a hero to do good).
They even have mirroring screwed up relationships with their parents! Cissie blames her mom for a lot and hated her for a while, but still loves her and they eventually came to an understanding after Bonnie went to therapy, and are now trying. Cass, meanwhile, clearly still loves David Cain as her father despite the things he put her through, but also hates him at the same time for that pain (go read Batgirl 2000, their relationship is so complex and fascinating). Meanwhile she also has a complex relationship with Shiva, her mother, who loves her but was never there when she was a child and still hurts her sometimes (now go read Batgirl 2024 where that relationship is discussed!)
So yeah, the two are basically really good foils of each other and that dynamic would be FASCINATING in a relationship (I like a romantic one but I'd be ECSTATIC with a friendship between them too). It gets even better when you consider they're both public figures (Cissie is a Olympic gold medalist and did canonically play a minor character in an episode of Wendy the Werewolf Stalker, while Cass is the only adopted daughter of Bruce Wayne.)
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE CONSIDER THESE TWO OMG
Anyway, more details under the cut if you want the full rant with receipts!
First, if you don't know the full details on who these two are:
Cissie King-Jones is the former child hero Arrowette, raised by her mother to be a hero and forced into the role of hero. She eventually became a member of Young Justice, alongside Tim Drake, Kon-El, Cassandra Sandsmark, Bart Allen, and Greta Hayes, watched over by Red Tornado (Anita Fite, Lil' Lobo/Slobo, Ray, and Snapper Car all joined after she quit the team but she did get to know them pretty well). She quit the hero life after almost killing someone because she didn't trust herself and couldn't do it anymore, then went on to become an Olympic gold medalist as a teenager, and briefly played a minor role in an episode of a really popular TV show while continuing to hang out with/help out Young Justice when they really needed it (in a support role, not as a hero). Technically, she was briefly brought back into the field in the Young Justice 2019-2021 run (to help rescue Kon from the government), and again in Absolute Power (when Amanda Waller put a bomb in her brain and forced her to join the Arrowfam), but I didn't like either of those instances so we're going to ignore them.
Cassandra Cain is the current Batgirl, first appearing during the No Man's Land arc and being mentored by Barbara Gordon, the first Batgirl. Cass was raised by her father David Cain, one of the best assassins in the world, and completely isolated from any form of language other than body language. Due to this, body language became her native tongue and she became one of the best fighters in the world. David forced her to kill someone for the first time at 8, after which she ran away and travelled around until she eventually arrived in Gotham and became Batgirl. She starred in the to-date longest running Batgirl solo book, Batgirl 2000, regularly works with the Birds of Prey (led by Barbara Gordon) and has become a regular fixture in the Gotham vigilantes crime scene.
Okay, now actually on to what makes them so interesting. I'm going to talk about three main things: their backstory, their perspectives on murder and the hero mantle, and their relationships with their parents. I'm also going to stick to canon, rather than fanon or headcanons, although I do think there's some very interesting potential for expansion with them especially since there basically isn't a canon statement of what Cissie's doing with her life now. (Personally, I really like the headcanon that Cissie is now a Hollywood star and think that would just add even more cool layers with the addition of both of them being big media celebrities, but that's just a headcanon even though I'd sell my soul for DC to make it canon.
1. Their Backstories
So I've already covered a bit of this, but we'll go a bit more into detail now about how similar their backstories are and how that could give them some common ground to stand on/a lens for which to understand each other.
Cissie, as I already mentioned, was raised and trained by her mom to become a superhero. Her mother, Bonnie King-Jones, was a Green Arrow fangirl and Olympic bronze medalist who tried to help out Green Arrow and Speedy (don't question the timelines) as the first Arrowette but was expressly told not to by them. Bonnie also got carpal-tunnel syndrome from her job typing, and was forced to put the bow down. She ended up meeting Bernell "Bowstring" Jones and married him, and they had a kid together (then he died from shellfish poisoning). Bonnie then projected onto her daughter and trained Cissie to become the superhero she had always wanted to be, with a non-stop regimen of archery, judo, gymnastics, etc.
(Impulse 1995 #28, the first appearance of Cissie King-Jones)
Bonnie claimed that this was because she wanted to ensure the Cissie made good use of her natural aiming talents, but the narrative makes it pretty clear that it was primarily projection and wanting to live her dream of being a hero through her daughter. It's so bad that in the very first issue Cissie's in, Impulse (1995) #28, Max Mercury calls CPS on Bonnie and has Cissie removed from her custody for child endangerment and abuse. This comes after Bart met Cissie, listened to the explanation she gave, told Max Mercury about it, and had to force Bonnie to tell him where Cissie was being held after she was kidnapped so he could save her. It's also worth pointing out that throughout this entire issue, Cissie is ordered around by her mother, calls her ma'am and seems extremely formal, and is wearing a gaudy costume that imitates the one her mom used to try and wear in her past.
(Impulse 1995 #28)
So yeah, her mom HEAVILY projected onto her and forced her to be a superhero with the name Arrowette that used the bow through an abusive training regimen. Cissie, after being removed from Bonnie's custody in a sealed court case, was placed in a boarding school and given a therapist to help her work through her issues surrounding Arrowette. Yes, she did pick Arrowette back up for a bit and join Young Justice, but I'll be discussing that in the section about their perspectives on the hero mantle.
Now, let's look at Cass' backstory. Cass was raised by her father, David Cain, without language and molded into the perfect fighter. This happened because David was frustrated with his students (including Bruce Wayne btw), never living up to their full potential and being unable to meet his expectations. So he spoke to a linguist about body language, and came to the conclusion that a child raised with no access to language and forced to rely solely on body language, would learn to read people so well that they would be practically unstoppable in a fight. So David manipulated Sandra Woosan (who would later become Lady Shiva) into agreeing to carry his child (by murdering her sister, who he believed was holding Shiva back, then offering to spare her life when she came to kill him as revenge in exchange for giving him a kid) and then raised her in isolation to be the perfect fighter.
(Batgirl 2000 #47, #73)
This training came in the form of a blatantly abusive relationship. Not only did David prevent Cass from learning a proper language instead of just body language, but he also explicitly hurt her over and over. He would surprise attack her to force her to learn her surroundings, randomly shoot her, make her fight highly trained adult assassins, and so much more (I'm not going to pull specific panels for these ones, mainly because most of them are multi-page spreads, but go read Batgirl 2000 and you'll see them. You should also just go read it in general). So yeah, extremely abusive childhood that hurt Cass a lot.
Eventually, when Cass was 8 years old David forced her to kill a man. Cass didn't fully realize what she was doing until after it happened, at which point she was horribly traumatized from the experience of watching someone die and intimately understanding what they were feeling (remember how she's so good at reading body language that she can basically tell what someone's thinking and feeling? Yeah, apply that skill to watching someone die.) Cass ran away from David after that and wandered around until she ended up in Gotham at 17, was trapped there during No Man's Land, and ended up becoming Batgirl. We'll talk about the murder and the Batgirl mantle especially in the next section.
So, the two of them have very similar backstories, where they were raised by abusive parents who pushed them to become the best possible of something (best hero for Cissie, best fighter and killer for Cass). This gives the two of them a unique understanding and perspective of each other. They didn't go through exactly the same thing (Cissie wasn't literally shot and eventually forced to kill people, but Cass also wasn't forced into the spotlight and media frenzy as a kid), but they would still have a good empathy for each other. They would each get it. And that's already so fascinating and compelling for them.
It gets better though.
2. Perspectives on Murder and the Hero Life
This is the part where it starts to get really interesting. So, let's talk about Cissie first. Remember how I mentioned she was removed from Bonnie's custody and placed in a boarding school, but ended up taking the cowl back up? This was because she wanted to get back at her mom, to prove that she was a better Arrowette without her influence.
(Secret Origins: 80 Page-Giant, Shafted)
She became Arrowette again because she knew she was good with a bow, but was forced into the cowl by her mother and, in her anger afterwards, decided she wanted to prove her wrong. The cowl for Cissie started out as something she didn't want, then a way to prove herself as better than her mother. Now, let's be fair to her. Cissie was a fantastic hero and did genuinely want to help people. She saved a lot of lives with Young Justice, and cared about saving people. As much as she wanted to get back at her mom, she also wanted to make people's lives better.
But sometimes, fighting isn't the right way to help people. Cissie realizes, in pretty much the worst way possible, that the actions of heroes have consequences. There's a targeted attack at her school. Her therapist, someone she's come to rely on heavily and view as a sort of mother-figure, is shot multiple times and killed by her ex-boyfriend and one of his friends. Cissie, in her grief, decides to hunt the killer down through the woods at night, shoots him multiple times with her own bow, and nearly kills him. She would have killed him, if it weren't for Kon appearing and grabbing her arrow out of thin air.
(Young Justice 1998 #15)
Kon offers Cissie a choice of whether to kill the man or not, after forcing her to take a moment to think. Cissie just walks away. After this, in the very next issue in fact, Cissie has a breakdown over this. She believes she's lost herself, that she's a supervillain now because heroes don't try to kill people.
(Young Justice 1998 #16)
Cissie, quite clearly, no longer believes in herself. She doesn't have faith in her abilities to be a hero anymore, not after she almost killed someone in raging grief, and would have if Kon hadn't managed to appear at exactly the right moment. She doesn't think she can be a hero anymore. How can someone so dangerous be a hero? (Don't think about other heroes who have killed people). Cissie apparently has very strong feelings on the ethics of a hero killing someone. But these strong feelings then soon get another layer added to them, in the form of responsibilities.
Cissie is dragged out to the mall by Cassie and Kon, and while they're there, they see someone steal from one of the stores. After being goaded by the security guard for not tripping the thief, Cissie leaps into action, flips through the air, slides down an elevator cable, and knocks out the thief with a roundhouse kick. Objectively cool moves. But Cissie then looks around and sees people's reactions to her fight, specifically kids' reactions.
(Young Justice 1998 #16)
Cissie is unsettled by the kids imitating her. She doesn't like it. Not only, she realizes, did she almost kill someone and nearly break her own moral code very easily, but she inspires children to follow in her footsteps. Kids want to be like her, even though she doesn't feel like she can trust herself. She can't live with that.
So Arrowette is hung up. For good, at the start of the very next issue.
(Young Justice 1998 #17)
Cissie King-Jones realizes she crossed a line, and that she could cross it again. She can't trust herself, the one thing an archer, a hero, needs to be able to do above all else. She also realizes that she's inspiring children, little kids who might follow the same screwed up and terrifying path she did. And she can't live with either of those things, the idea that she might be driven to kill again, the fact that kids want to be like her.
So she quits. She's done. And she doesn't come back, despite the rest of the team and Cassie in particular trying VERY HARD to convince her.
Clearly, Cassie feels very strongly about her hero mantle and the idea of murder. For her, the mantle was a way to help people, yes, but it was more-so about getting back at her mother. And when she's someone who has the power to kill someone and inspire children, she can't do that. She can't be put in that position of power. She can't trust herself with it. Her happiness, her peace, lies in putting down the bow and arrow, and becoming just a civilian (something that we see in later issues she is DEFINETLY happy and content with).
Cass, on the other hand, feels very differently about her hero mantle. She didn't become a hero until long after she initially killed someone at 8 years old.
(Batman #567)
This event led to her running away from David Cain and wandering around for years, until she arrives in Gotham City. There, she works as one of Barbara's runners during the No Man's Land arc, and her skill is quickly noticed by Batman. Cass becomes Batgirl pretty quickly.
Through her whole tenure as Batgirl, Cass is DETERMINED to save as many people as she can. She doesn't seem to really care about her own identity, about how hurt she gets, or what the risk to herself is as long as she can save people. The life of another person is worth more than her own safety. She's dedicated to the role of hero. And, there's a pretty simple explanation for why she's like this.
Guilt.
Cassandra Cain never got over killing someone at 8 years old. She felt the death. She understood, intimately, by reading the man's body language, exactly what happened when she killed the man. (I can't find the issue where it says this but if anyone else knows it PLEASE TELL ME AND I'LL ADD IT). She's wrecked with guilt and that guilt is what fuels her. If she can save enough people, if she can help everyone she can, then maybe, just maybe, she'll be able to balance the scales. Maybe she can make up for the life she took. Maybe she can atone and become a good person. (Cass will never think it's been enough. She'll never think the scales are balanced. She'll always see herself as a murderer, not a hero.)
(Batgirl 2000 #5)
So for Cass, the mantle of Batgirl is a way to help make up for her past wrong, a way for her to be a good person. She's bad without the cowl, but with it, she can atone. She can save lives to make up for her murdering someone.
For Cissie, the mantle of Arrowette is something that will make her a bad person. If she puts that cowl back on, if she picks up her costume, she will be hurting people. She may not actually kill anyone, but she will be inspiring kids and that's unacceptable.
For Cass, the murder means she needs the cowl.
For Cissie, the attempted murder means she can never put the cowl back on.
It's such a FASCINATING difference between the two, such a different way for them to look at everything they've done and how that affects their role as a hero. They both despise the idea of murdering someone, can't accept doing it, and it manifests so differently in them. It's super interesting and would be the backdrop of a really cool dynamic. Cass, using her murder as fuel to be a better hero, while Cissie uses her attempted murder as a reason to never be a hero again.
I really want to see a conversation between the two of them about this. I think I'd die if DC ever did that (we all know they won't because they're stupid). They would both just, well, understand in a way that most other people wouldn't. They would get it. They'd be there, in a shared trauma and refusal to murder that intertwines intrinsically with their hero identities and their position in life, and they'd be beautiful.
So uh. I just realized there's a limit on how many images you can put in a single post on Tumblr. I need more images. I have so many receipts. I'm splitting this up because I have no other options.
Part 2.

Freshwater Kills: Star City Killer Finally Behind Bars
June 12th, 2025
Written by: Whitney L. Walker
Three months ago, a retired Horton Chemicals plant manager Gregory Friedkin was found dead in his apartment, having suspiciously drowned. Over the following months, multiple of his old colleagues and superiors were found in similar states while the police searched for a serial killer. Yesterday morning, with the help of the elusive vigilante Green Arrow, the truth finally came to light in the form of an arrested Freshwater Killer.
By the time the Star City Police Department (SCPD) realised that there was a serial killer in their beloved city, four were already dead. Gregory Friedkin was the first believed victim, but it isn't until the murder of Horton Chemicals CFO Donald Sherman that the murders of these two men - as well as Shaun Buxtley, Lemmy O’Nade, and Diane Greepon - were all connected. How? Every victim was a former employee of Horton Chemicals.
The night Mr Sherman’s death became public, the killer struck again. Senator Eustace Foley, known for funding the Freshwater Environmental Disaster, was found dead via drowning at his estate. Reports claim that the primary for the case, Detective Lena Benítez soon arrived at the scene with none other than Green Arrow - the famously liberal vigilante of Star City who has been known to often be at odds with the SCPD. Benítez assured the press in her official statement that “Green Arrow's presence was necessary for the case” and that, without his assistance, “[they] never could have brought the killer to justice.”
Officer Benítez arriving at the late Senator Foley's home with the vigilante Green Arrow, 2025 (image: Officer Montos, SCPD)
Benítez goes on to say: “I stepped away from the crime scene for one moment - my police dog, Arrow, was barking very loudly and scaring witnesses - so I don't know the full story here. However, myself and Arrow were attacked by the Freshwater Killer in the woods surrounding Senator Foley’s estate. Green Arrow came to my rescue and, together, we arrested who we thought was our perp: Francene Dory.”
Ms Francene Dory was a guidance counsellor at Galesburg Middle School, had no criminal record, and was believed to have been of sound mind during the attack. A few months prior, Ms Dory was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia and had been on an indefinite leave of absence for a month - the exact time frame of the Freshwater Killer's murders. Yet, according to Officer Benítez, something wasn't right. Unfortunately, nothing would come of this arrest as a few moments later, footage reveals that Ms Dory suddenly began choking, almost as though she was drowning, within the precinct’s interrogation room. She died in custody.
It was at this point that Detective Benítez and Green Arrow went their separate ways due to a disagreement over Ms Dory’s death.
The night after Ms Dory's death, there was shock across the city as the Freshwater Killer somehow attacked again. This time, they attacked Queen Industries CEO Oliver Queen, who was acting CEO of Horton Chemicals just last year, with a lead pipe, but the billionaire was able to defend himself. He subdued the Killer and contacted the police. Detective Hartley, who worked alongside Benítez for this case, soon arrested our supposed copycat, Theodore Shepherd. He also said that Queen was an immediate suspect following this encounter, but that suspicion was soon deterred by his jolly, carefree demeanor.

Meanwhile, Detective Benítez arrived at the Freshwater site to investigate Ms Dory's claims that Horton Chemicals had caused her cancer. Upon arriving at the scene, Benítez claims she was attacked by a large crowd of Freshwater Killers. They subdued her and suspended her above a pool of poisoned water. Luckily, before the gang could release her, she was saved by Green Arrow. He took down many of the supposed Freshwater Killers, including the leader of their revolt: Kenneth 'Kenny' Gordon.
Mr Gordon was soon arrested and tried in court for the crimes of his possé, where he was found guilty of murder thrice over and given five life sentences. It's believed that, even if he applies for parole, he will not be released in his lifetime.
The reasoning behind these attacks, as stated by Mr Gordon himself, is all due to the Freshwater Environmental Disaster. For those unaware, Freshwater was a large city complex that was designed to offer affordable and quality homes for the lower class citizens of Star City and Galesburg, and it was all funded by Horton Chemicals. However, unbeknownst to the residents, Freshwater was built on unstable ground with toxins in the soil, sediment and water. Many individuals, including Mr Gordon's late mother, suffered severe, life-long illnesses due to the toxins they were exposed to at the hands of men like Donald Sherman and Gregory Friedkin.
Mr Gordon himself was diagnosed with epilepsy at 12. Medical records state that he had extremely high levels of benzene in his body - a highly volatile and carcinogenic hydrocarbon - which was the primary cause of his illness.
Kenny Gordon seen talking at a 'Freshwater Survivors Group' meeting, 2024. Here, he is discussing his illnesses, his mother's, and reaching out to his fellow survivors. (image: Dia Merden, The Star)
Ms Francene Dory was also a victim of Horton Chemicals. She bought property in Freshwater, and unfortunately the toxic waste caused the death of her 5-year-old child by cancer. This subsequently caused a rift between her and her husband, leading to divorce, and she was soon diagnosed with cancer herself - the same that her child had. Just like Mr Gordon, she sought justice and vengeance against a cruel company that killed thousands of children like her own.
Urged on by these tragedies, Mr Gordon rallies the former residents of Freshwater together to take revenge on all those involved with the site.
There is no undoing the damage done by either Mr Gordon or the Freshwater Disaster, however billionaire Oliver Queen is already trying to make amends. This afternoon he introduced the ‘Brenda Gordon Environmental Group' - a team funded by Queen and dedicated to repurposing, rebuilding, and innovating Freshwater. It's no way to heal the wounds the victims and their families already have, but even Mr Gordon has admitted that it's a start.
The Planet offers its condolences to the families of those involved.

Killer Croc Arrested as Poison Ivy Escapes!
June 6th, 2025
Written by: Piera Landen
The eco-terrorist supervillain Poison Ivy, known for her large scale attacks that make use of mind-controlling plant pollens, was finally located earlier today after a long disappearance. The GCPD received word that she was hiding out in the ruins of Marshview, just outside of Gotham City. However, while attempting to arrest her, the GCPD was attacked by fellow supervillain Killer Croc and known eco-terrorist group The Order of the Green Knight. Poison Ivy and The Order of the Green Knight escaped, but Killer Croc was taken into custody.
Marshview was established in the late 1950s as a suburban expansion for residents of Gotham City. The town was built in the marshes to the north-west of Gotham City, and proved very successful for its first year of operation. Unfortunately, the contractors did not recognize the danger of the marshes, which soon proved to be fatal for the town.
Incoming tides routinely flooded the bottom few feet of Marshview, pipelines burst and released toxic swamp gas into the atmosphere, and people began to get sick in droves. Some of the town’s residents left, but many remained. That proved to be their final mistake, as those left soon succumbed to the poisonous air. Many of them experienced vivid hallucinations in their final weeks.
Marshview flooded in 1958, killing many residents and leading to the migration of some of the survivors. Those who remained perished from the toxic air. (Image Credit: Gotham City Archives)
Environmental investigators later determined that the natural flora around Marshview had developed in the perfect mixture to slowly infect and poison residents with plant pollens and water contaminants. The ruins of Marshview were abandoned, and the surrounding areas declared a national wildlife refuge to prevent any later attempts at development. Marshviews exact location was soon lost, reclaimed and buried by the plant growth in the area.
However, notorious Gotham supervillain Poison Ivy appears to have discovered the location of Marshview and turned it into her base of operations. Poison Ivy has been missing since she reportedly bombed a grocery store in downtown Gotham City two months ago. The GCPD never stopped searching for her with the assistance of Gotham’s elusive vigilantes, but Ivy was never located.
Until earlier today that is, when the GCPD received an anonymous tip claiming they saw Poison Ivy in the ruins of Marshview. The GCPD surrounded Marshview with multiple squads of heavily equipped and metahuman trained officers, and multiple police helicopters.
“She appeared to be alone at first,” explained Detective Jespson, the GCPD officer in charge of the assault. “Our officers surrounded her and managed to beat her after taking some heavy damage. We even had her in cuffs, until Croc and those Order guys showed up out of nowhere.”

Poison Ivy was rescued by fellow Gotham supervillain Killer Croc and members of the eco-terrorist group The Order of the Green Knight. Very little is known about the group aside from their similar views to Poison Ivy and their handful of attacks on cities. The attackers succeeded in freeing Poison Ivy, but Killer Croc was taken into custody. None of the Order members were arrested. Killer Croc is now en-route to Arkham Tower, where he will be imprisoned and monitored 24/7 by guards.
The sudden appearance of Killer Croc and the Order of the Green Knight can’t help but leave us wondering whether they may be working together. And if they are, then what does that mean for the environments of the world? We here at the Daily Planet will be sure to keep you updated on any developments.

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:
"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.
an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.
You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.
If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.
Okay that's my schpeal. everybody go have fun and play nice now.

Apollo and Midnighter
PEAK TIME GUYS ITS MY DADS!!!!! Day 6 yet only drawing 3 of my pride posts - today we have one of, if not THE, most iconic gay couple in comics: MIDPOLLO!!!!
If u hate the rainbow leather blame Jupiter
Oh god where do I even start with these two.
Their very first panel ever, not even just together, had them both naked in an abandoned warehouse
The Authority (1992) #13 - "Apollo and the Midnighter: a look around the carrier with the world's finest couple." They also kiss on panel for the first time in this issue
Apollo sacrificed himself in The Authority (1992) #15 and here's the panel of Midnighter crying over his unconscious (luckily not dead) body!!!

Literally like 10 pages later Midnighter says to a recovered Apollo: "God, I just love you to bits sometimes."
Skipping a little cos I can't keep using the same run: they had the first ever gay marriage in comics in The Authority (1992) #29:

Such a bad outfit btw, someone should have gone to the fitting with Midnighter cos it is not it
Their marriage in that issue also allowed them to adopt the newly born spirit of the 21st century Jenny Quarx/Quantum
Very first issue of The Authority (2003) they're naked in bed together and kiss, and obviously was going to do more if Jenny Q hadn't interrupted
In DC Pride 2025, they were transported to a wish world where Apollo's wish was that Midnighter would never have to kill again, and they were SO CUTE, they kept calling each other "dearest" and "darling" and UGH THEY MAKE ME ILL GO READ IT AND IGNORE THE BLUE SNOWMAN SECTION!!!!!!!
To get a little less specific cos this list is getting LONG 😭: they're constantly checking each other out during battle, they're constantly called goddamn slurs 🙄, and they physically cannot keep their hands off each other
This is literally all from my own reading btw, I haven't been able to read recently so I'm only at Authority (2003) #8, but I'm sure it just gets more romantic from there
Midnighter and Apollo are one of the most influential couples in comics, and I'd argue the most iconic. People who don't even read the Authority or things related to Wildstorm know who they are. It was arguably blasphemous that I didn't do them first however I draw them enough as it is 😭😭

Wonder Woman
PEAK MENTION IT'S MY WIFE GUYS!!!!! I'm drawing canon queer characters in comics every day of pride and today's is my literal wife Wonder Woman, I adore her so so much
Wonder Woman has technically been queer since inception so this list is gonna be looooong:
She was written by William Marston alongside his wife and their polyamorous partner Olive Byrne, the latter who was actually the inspiration for Diana
She has a relationship with the Amazon Kasia at the beginning of Wonder Woman: Year One, where she is also implied to have had sexual relations with the Amazons "Meghara and Evrayle"
Her and Queen Mera were childhood lovers in DC: Bombshells
She was in a relationship with Clark's younger sister Zala Jor-El in Dark Knights of Steel
Lynda Carter responded to a homophobe who said "Wonder Woman IS NOT A SUPERHERO FOR THE GAYS!" by saying "You're right. She's a superhero for the bisexuals."
She officiated a lesbian wedding in Sensation Comics #48 and said to Superman "My country is all women. To us it is not 'gay' marriage, it's just marriage."
She goes on a date with soon-to-be enemy Veronica Cale in Wonder Woman (2016) #22. Although Cale won this date in an auction, Diana definitely wasn't opposed to the idea.
Diana has been confirmed 'queer' by DC for decades now, however they've never given her a proper label. Most fans, as well as Lynda Carter, believe her to be bisexual, but there is a lot of evidence she is pansexual as well.
I always love drawing Diana she's everything to me
