Credits: @noelcasajephotography ・・・ "WHEN LOOKS DECEIVE" At first glance, these chollas look so cuddly, you almost feel like you can hug them, hence the nickname "teddy bear cholla". But, you're in for a world of hurt once you fall prey to a few nasty barbs. Captured a couple of hours before sunrise (note the stars peeking between the clouds). This would have been an eerie place to shoot at night if not for the ambient light from the nearby city of Phoenix, but I still kept my eyes peeled for rattlesnakes and tarantulas, just in case :). When we started hiking the clouds were looking fairly average and we didn’t think sunset would be anything super special but to say the prospects improved quickly would be a massive understatement! Next thing we knew some huge lenticular clouds were forming all over the place, with a massive gap on the horizon, right around sunset. Unfortunately we weren’t in position we wanted to be in so we had to quickly compose something while the light was at its best! I found this spot while exploring around this past fall and have been waiting for some good conditions to finally put together a decent shot. Life has been a bit crazy for me lately mainly due to work and traveling, but I was able to make a trip out here last weekend with my wife and our dog Lucy for a quick one-night camping trip. Normally I go out alone so it was really nice to have them with me and to relax at this amazing camping spot with unbeatable views of Mt. Hood.
