This is Mod Sara, here to thank all contributors and supporters of Fractured Fairy Tales. In the beginning, we were worried that no one would be interested in the project, especially since we had no plans of producing physical copies of the zine. Would people be willing to buy such a product in digital format, when they can browse countless of fanarts and fanfiction online for free? This fear later turned out to be unfounded, as we managed to raise close to $300 in a month! According to Room to Read, $300 can keep a girl in school for a year. Thank you everyone for helping contribute to a worthy cause!
The zine is still up for release. It will only be available until the end of March, so hurry and get a copy!

Is there any possibility to pay it without a credit card? Because I tried with the pay pal method but it still asking me for a credit card.
Hello, we are not sure why Gumroad is asking for a credit card when Paypal works just fine with other people who pre-ordered. We kindly suggest you try again. If it still won’t accept your Paypal, send us an email at [email protected] so we can set something up and directly send the file by February 1!

Can you create a list of the main characters/pairings featured in the stories? I would just like to see how is involved.
Thank you for the interest in Fractured Fairy Tales!
The 35-page sampler should be able to give you an idea on what to expect, but feel free to check out this spreadsheet for quick reference.

Once upon a time there was a little girl who was called little Red Riding-Hood, because she was quite small and because she always wore a red cloak with a big red hood to it, which her grandmother had made for her.
A little girl, no more than five, made her way through the dim hallway, bleary eyed and tired from the bout of nightmares that had woken her in the first place. She did not notice the slim figure slipping out of her father’s bedroom until she’d stumbled into its legs. All bleariness gone, she lifted her face to the stranger’s, cut in shadow and moonlight from a window someone had forgotten to draw the curtains over. The figure bent to face level, knees resting in the plush carpet, and in the new light the girl could tell it was a man–perhaps a friend of father’s? He smiled an easy grin, and the girl relaxed; no friend of papa’s would hurt her.
She removed her thumb from her mouth.  “Are you papa’s friend?”
“No,” replied the man, still with the same easy smile. He pointed to the framed portrait above them, a hand-painted depiction of a family of five. “Can you tell who are they? Who’s that, to the left?”
“Oh oh–that she’s my elder sister, and the one over there? That’s my second favourite sister, and that’s papa and mama, holding Asako-chan–she’s always crying, but she’s cuter than the others and likes me the best,” the girl’s words were eager, running together in excitement–it was clear she loved to talk about her family.
“And who’s your first favourite sister? Asako?” the stranger gave a playful tug at her braid. “Or do you prefer brothers?”
“Oh no, brothers are horrible. Asako doesn’t play with me a lot, though, so my first favourite is that one over there. She makes dolls for me and plays with me the most.”
“She sounds sweet, Hana.”
“How-how do you know my name?” Hana gaped, eyes wide.
“Oh, I know the names of all the children. I know your favourite sister’s Chiyoko, and your eldest is Hanami. Don’t you know that I live under your beds and basements?”
“So what mama told me–it is true! You don’t look like a monster, though.” the cold fingers of fear had began to grip her one by one. Monsters were cruel, horrendous, and yet the stranger was beautiful, eyes warm and amiable–
The next time he spoke, the stranger’s voice was soft, a silky lull no different from how mama’s was when she had tucked her into bed. “Tell you what, Hana. If you tell anyone that I was here, the monster will know and put Mama and Asako to sleep. You don’t want them asleep forever, do you?”
Hana shook her head in silence, felt her knees knock together as the stranger made to rise. “Go to bed, Hana. Pretend as if I’d never been here, just a little nightmare, off you go.”
So Hana turned her back on the monster and darted into her room, almost tripping over in haste, the last thing she saw out of the corner of her eye a flash of red caught in the moonlight.

A preview of things to come in the @bsdtales zine I’m in! This was an extra piece I did which is not going to be in the zine to go with the fic as I did a few different pieces but only one was needed in the end. So take this as a bit of a look at the fic I drew for which is written by the consistently wonderful @kunikidazai

Hi! My friend and I are interested on the book, and we have some questions. 1) Is it really $7 a book? :"D (+200 pages??) 2) Is it a physical or digital copy? 3) I checked the PO link, and the language is japanese... do you send the copy from japan? I'm so sorry, my english isn't very good;;; have a good day! ^^
Hello there! First of all, thanks for taking an interest in the zine. Anyway, we’re not sure why the link is in Japanese because it’s still in English for us, but as for your other question, the zine will be in pdf format. We’ve decided from the start to go this route because of: 1.) inexperience of the organizer and the mods because this is our first zine project; and 2.) compared to other zines ours will have more text which will take up A LOT of pages and will increase the printing costs.
Again, thanks for checking out Fractured Fairy Tales zine. We hope you can support us when the zine is finally released!

Golden Hair and Ash: PREVIEW
Hello everyone! I’ve decided to post a small snippet of my fanfic that will be in the @bsdtales Fractured Fairy Tales zine! Accompanying my fic is some gorgeous art from Keelin @mr-reblogbutton who I greatly appreciate especially how busy it is right now for them! Please wish them good luck! An additional thanks to Taylor @naotoosh and Cyrus @jewishsuperhero for their advice while writing!
Here is the preview for you all for my Rapunzel inspired Kunikida/Hawthorne fic! I hope you enjoy reading this rarepair, and I highly encourage everyone to buy the zine for the full fic when it is released, since the proceeds will be going to charity! Thank you!
There had once been a clan of entertainers who roamed the land. They were a family from a land far to the east with abilities that allowed them to create objects, seemingly out of thin air. It was that ability and their long, golden hair that made them stand out from the rest of the common folk. Everywhere the entertainers went, they would be met with crowds—from young children shouting with glee at the toy animals that sprung up in the town squares, to the adults who watched in wonder at the light shows that were performed at night. And almost as soon as they arrived, they would pack up and leave. As the ventured onward to the next town, the objects they created were left behind as the only proof they had even been there.
With abilities like theirs, it was only a matter of time before someone would seek to take it as their own. So when the family of entertainers was discovered one morning, their throats slit, their long, golden tresses shorn, and the new baby of the youngest couple vanished, people were shocked at the sight, but not surprised it had occurred.
Time went on and people forgot about the family with the long, golden hair. They forgot about the magical abilities and the traveling performances. And of course they forgot about the baby who had vanished while his family lay slain. They became mere stories that parents told their children about at night.
After all, no one knew that baby was now living deep within the forest after being taken by a sorcerer who sought to use the child’s abilities for his own schemes.

Cat in the Ashes
i’ve been seeing more and more previews being posted in light of the zine’s publication going underway, so i figured i’d post my entry for the @bsdtales zine too!! i was fortunate enough to be partnered up with @chiatten who is a gem and has their preview up here! please give all the entries a read when the zine comes out!
this is a Cinderella retelling for akuatsu.
The children of the orphanage had a special name for Nakajima Atsushi, who slept by the fireplace in the basement, with his strange colored eyes and the stray cats he’d offer scraps from the kitchen; the Cat in the Ashes.
A name he’d come to live with, a name he’d abandon once he left this place with Sakura, Yuu, Kasumi, Kousuke and Shinji.
He had only one wish: to leave with them one day.
In a grove of wisteria, Atsushi sat in a patch of sunlight against the trunk of a tree. He laid a book in his lap, pressed against his knees and was lost within it; he devoured the world it offered him, something different from this place. Somewhere better.
Atsushi didn’t look up from his book until he heard the crack of broken branches and a dark shape moving between the hedges of the trees. The snap echoed through the woods and Atsushi started, eyes widened.
He’d been going to these woods for years, no one had ever found him here.
A hunter? A thief? A vagrant–!?
Shoulders tense, Atsushi slowly raised himself to a stand. Lowering his book to the trunk, Atsushi stepped back and wrapped his fingers around a stray rock.
The sounds of branches breaking grew louder, joined by the shuffle of a body edging closer to Atsushi. His fingers tightened around the rock.
Something pale stretched out of the darkness, curling around a bulb of pale lavender wisteria buds, and Atsushi’s breath hitched.
With a cry, Atsushi threw his arm back and tossed the rock in his hand, barely larger than a pebble, forward. It flew across the grove–
“Argh–!”

My Home Ocean - preview
Since I see a bunch of other previews up, here’s a snippet from the fic I wrote for the @bsdtales Fractured Fairy Tales zine!   John’s room had always overlooked the ocean.  His family’s castle, such as it was, stood on a cliff; the view held nothing but sea and sky.  At times it was beautiful and blue, and other times it was gray, thick with clouds and wind.  They matched, a perfect pair, always.
Thinking about it made John’s heart ache.  Here he was, squarely stuck in the middle.  The eldest son of a small, impoverished kingdom, bound by duty and responsibility to a life he never wanted.
A gull flew past the window, and he sighed.  Plenty of people envied the freedom of birds.  But the sky was empty.  John had always thought that the water was far more inviting.  Thick with life and landscapes, shipwrecks and ruins.  A whole different world, hidden from view.
Nothing that lived underwater had to worry about the disrepair of the walls, about tithing increasingly poor farmers just to have food to get through the winter.  About learning the sword, like he’d ever lead an army into battle, like they even had an army.
Every evening, after dinner, John left the confines of the castle, and headed to the shore.  The beach was more rocks than sand, but John didn’t mind.  He’d climb onto one of the ridges, sit, and stare out at the waves.  Sometimes he’d see sea lions.  Once he saw a whale breaching in the distance.
And then one day, just as the sun was setting, he saw a face in the water.
Oh my gosh who’s face is it?  What a mystery!  (It’s not a mystery at all, you guys know me.) Please check out the full version in the zine when it releases in a month!  It’ll have a FREAKING GORGEOUS illustration by the wonderful Eden @mlemclub
So yeah!  I’m excited!  I hope you’re all excited!  :D

Since I finally finished and everyone else is doing it, I wanted to share a preview of my fic for @bsdtales‘s fractured fairytale zine, The Nutcracker & The Rat King! :D
~
It was hard to distinguish anything in the darkened room, but a scurrying sound came from the other side, heading off in the direction of the Christmas tree too quickly for Chuuya’s eyes to adjust. For a moment he thought it was a figment of his imagination, but again the sound came; a dark spot shot across the floor in the opposite direction of the tree this time. Chuuya recoiled, immediately recognizing it as a rodent. Another second and he realized that this was a bigger problem; two more mice (or were they rats?) shot out from under a nearby door. Chuuya flattened himself against the cabinet, face twisting into an expression of disgust. The longer he looked the more there seemed to be. Heart racing, certain that he had to be dreaming, Chuuya stumbled back and knocked into the dolls resting on the cabinet shelves.
“Watch it, Red,” a voice spoke clear as day just behind him.
Chuuya spun, a gasp on his lips. He tried to distinguish where the voice had come from. A shift of something on the shelf caught his eye, and then-
“Well, hello~” the voice spoke again, coming from a tiny man who sat on the edge of the shelf swinging his legs, exactly where he’d left the nutcracker minutes before.
Chuuya screamed, rearing back and nearly catching on the open cabinet door.
“Woah woah dollface, no need for hysterics!” The man called, just as Chuuya landed on his backside. Wide blue eyes stared up at the shelf, unbelieving of what he saw. He wore a familiar black uniform, chocolate brown hair fell into his one visible eye, the other covered in a bandage. His arm was held in a sling at his side…
“…Are you…?” Chuuya stopped himself. No, that was ridiculous.
“I believe I was introduced to you as a nutcracker, but as you can see my talents extend beyond shelling walnuts,” the man announced with a lopsided grin.

Preview of the fic written for the @bsdtales zine paired with art drawn by the talented @miss-intention ♡ Hope you enjoy the full fic once the zine is released, which will include other pitches from multiple, talented writers and artists!
A Hades and Persephone adaptation for SKK
Hades. Despite having the name written across his skin, he had never actually seen…. or heard anything about the mysterious god.
Who is Hades. Why doesn’t anyone mention him? And most importantly, why don’t I see him here in Olympus?
All questions he’d lost track of the times he’d asked. He could repeat them till his voice turned scratchy and his throat sore, but regardless of how he questioned, the answer always come with hushed voices, fearful eyes, and fingers pressed against his lips to silence him.
“Do not speak the name. Do not search him out. And most importantly.”
“Do not seek out the underworld.”
