Morpheus tries being a nightmare upon the Corinthian’s suggestion, but when he emerges from Rose’s throne room with eyes of pure red sclera and tight leather robes strung with chains, his lover alights upon him and they do not leave their domicile for a month.

Their lady declares it a failed experiment as neither nightmare attends to their function at all.

The Corinthian sulks for three days straight.

“I should probably get back to work,” the Corinthian says. “What are you going to do?”

Morpheus is still on the bed, reclining on the torn pillows. “I... do not know,” he says. “I should go to my lady, and ask her for my function.”

The Corinthian tries to imagine him kneeling in front of Rose, asking for something to do, and can’t.

This snippet (opted for more than a line just to give a little more context XD) is from “In Occursum Dei”. Current word count is 22k, including the outline. ^_^;;

Aw thank you so much! These are photo manips (i.e. I take several photos and cut them together with Photoshop and a bunch of other filters LOL) so they’re not paintings or anything, they’re just made to simulate the texture of them. :D 

About your comment re: Rose- I completely understand where you’re coming from. :) Cori has been struggling with his nature for most of the fic, and this was kind of his final personal test to see if he’d mastered himself or not. A lot of the earlier chapters were focused on his personal growth and his desire to be “more” than what he was created to be, (the scenes in the Waking world where he was trying to learn to walk it without killing anyone were especially about this) and Rose was able to appeal to him because by this time he’d been with Dream for about 60 years already. :)

The Corinthian’s mouth thins, and he raises his blade, touching it to her chest. She’s so thin that it wouldn’t take anything at all to push it in. Just a flick of his wrist…

Rose shakes her head ruefully, unperturbed. “I’m sure you know all of this already,” she says. “I’ve seen the way you look at me. And I always thought… no one can look at anyone they don’t know with that much hatred, unless they were looking at someone else with just as much love.”

The Corinthian looks around wildly, finds a hole in the gathering crowd and pushes past, running down the street as fast as he can. He needs a dreamer to go home, but he’s in the red light district and the city pulses like a living thing.

A living thing that does not want him.

“Morpheus!” he shouts in desperation. “Lord, I want to go home!!”

No sooner do the words leave his lips than Dream appears, as if an absence of light at the end of the street. His cloak billows open into a field of stars.

The Corinthian runs into him, inside of him, not caring what the waking world sees; he does not look back.
