a moment of silence please
Hey, so I’m really mad right now.
But don’t expose developer to Rainbow High hair. It strips the colour. Or at least it did to my poor Cheer Jade.

Hi doll repaint and custom artist, read...pls..👉👈
So, I was in the middle of creating UI portfolio and I have an idea??
So I want to create a fictional app about some kind of community about doll custom/repaint. Well it's not exist for sure. I want to build where artist can show their works and to commission. Like are you on board with this? Any idea of what features can you think of? I appreciate some suggestions

I kind of destroyed the curtsy mechanism of the previous doll because I paint the body so I repaint another similar doll's face and leave the rest. Also looking into a more light-looking face so I keep the makeup minimized. This is the first time I paint the lashes and catchlights so yay me :D

More Trish doll again! This time almost managed to make her actual fit, unfortunately the fabric I ordered from spoonflower printed the pattern too large, but I made it work (I'll probably order another one again).
Trish is also wearing more RH clothes I bought from insta (also that bustier can only fit around her waist which is why I have turned upside down in the first pic and secured with a safety pin in the back)

There’s a blue version of the mystery body. If I had seen this one first I may have chosen this one instead of green? I already have a blue head, though the blue may be different… Bodes well for more fantasy colors in the future though.

hi ! i have an irrepressible urge to make a custom doll, but outside of sewing the clothes, i have no idea what skills i need or even what my options are. what resources do you think are most useful for beginner learning ? thank you & forgive me if this is a common question
You know what I think?? I think that instead of trying to look for a place where there’s a bunch of basic tutorials on how to pull off each of the individual tasks required to customize a toy, I’d say to solidify your idea by finding specific inspiration and figuring out how those specific artists did it. Sometimes going to the basics can be too general. Like, you don’t need to go and confuse yourself by watching thirty different videos from different customizers on how they each individually repaint a face. They will all have differing techniques and different steps that they take. Why not zero in on the kind of results that you want to go for instead??
For example: say your irrepressible customization urge is to redo a fashion doll to evoke a specific aesthetic that you like, ex. grunge or neon or pastel or horror. You might risk becoming overwhelmed with the myriad choices there are for bases, for rerooting or dying or re-engineering, for just touching up paint or doing the whole thing over from scratch, or simply redressing. A little basic research is obviously necessary, like: what scales are available?? The difference between 1/6 and 1/8, how different Eastern and Western brands look, what kind of articulation and basic colors are easily available, etc?? But what I find helpful is to gravitate towards a couple of inspirations that speak to me and to then learn from that one artist, to pick out those specific tasks for those specific customs and then emulate them as best you can. So you decide you want a grunge 1/6 female doll: find a custom grunge doll online that you love. Dig around for the artist, figure out how they pulled it off. Just ‘I want to customize’ is seriously way too broad. Make it easier on yourself!!

First of all, sorry for my crappy henna nails.
Back then, I was wondering how artists color MH skins. Since mostly I found out most them are colored using airbrush and I don’t have it, I’m using acrylic on left and soft pastel on right. I’m using Frankie, actually I have a hard time choosing between Draculaura and Frankie but for the sake how I can test and strech, I choose Frankie.
Tbh, I don’t like recolor doll skin, including unnatural skin like MH but girl I do adore MH sculpts. Also they’re eats up MSC, I only have MSC and babe MSC are expensive in my area as I have not guts to try another brand. Btw, I already neutralize both sides. Anyways...

Acrylic. I don’t like the texture. I really have hard time blushing. I don’t know how many layers but I’m trying not to overdoing it bcs acrylic can go crack. She seems wearing light-medium foundation. I really have hard time to draw on this.

Then soft pastel. I really like the texture, it’s easier to draw. But I admit it also frustrate me. I’m not very good on skin complexion but I accidentally erase to the original green color when trying to fix the shadings, tho I can fix it but thus resulting the weird cheekbone shades. This side the most who ate up my MSC life.
Originally I have no idea what to reference since this is just a test but Sindel comes to mind bcs of the hair. Now she’s looks like that Sindel meme that one user post when they’re main Sindel for 23hours on MK11 (yes hello MK community of tumblr, you can guess who am I?😉)

Body blushing on pivotal body was tricky than I thought. For something static stance like this, Sofia is much easier bcs I can think where the lighting hits most likely thus I know where to put the shades.
But for this pivotal body... need to guess harder. Trying to bit made the shades looks weird but overall it was challenging.
I mean come on, this is pivotal.

I thought I made a mistake like “am I accidentally made the head looks darker than I supposed to?”
Nah, I don’t.
P.S. The body is like knock-off pivotal Barbie. Only to realize these two have different undertones. Barbie got more warmer and deeper. The body is more pinkish. Tried to blushing as far as I can but still jarring in the end. Disappointed but at least I learn something here and consider this as test.

Ikr. As much I love the diversity, there just something missing rn. Barbie in 2000s have so much things I can’t explain but I love it sm.
Anyway Barbie rn sucks as a brand cuz it's an ouroboros of designers designing shit they think poor children deserve and Barbie arbitrarily having traits that only exist cuz she's Barbie rather than reflecting on the culture around her.

Obitsu Heads Review!
So I just bought Obitsu head. I’ve never touched any Parabox beforehand so it’s a new experience. I bought these heads through Indonesian third-party supplier who specialized in Japanese crafts products and apparently these are old stocks from Japan. That means these are no longer available on the official store but still can be purchased on third party.

You can say I’m pretty shocked when come in two because I remember clearly I just ordered one. I even contacted the supplier lol😂
.I’ll continue because of the long post 😅

It’s listed as “OB-2″ on the back of the head. The vinyl felt soft, even softer than Barbie. But the neck are is larger and even smaller hole for Barbie (can’t fit ice scream stick on it, paint brush stick will do then). I can’t fit it unless I slit some opening near the hole. My first intention was to put Obitsu head on Barbie-like body (pivotal, but cheaper. You know those one who came in dollar store). But for now I just save it for future projects.

The comparison between Obitsu and Sofia (Mattel) head! Now you see how small she is. She is my fav creation btw. Idk, she’s just compact and easy to store with (I stored her in used ice cream container lol 😂). Sofia’s head not exactly the softest one but you know, it’s fine. As same quality as Mattel vinyl.

Here Obitsu compared with Barbie (a WIP, currently). Tbh I prefer working on bigger eyes because beside having eyesight, it’s just pain. I kind of jealous but have mad respect to other repaint artists who can paint Barbie in very detailed way. Imo, I really prefer the neutral expression of Obitsu, you can even paint more serious expression while Barbie is very tricky to find specific expression. The downside of Obitsu are even more smaller head (means even harder) and lack of darker skin tone, even after the discontinue of this head and still the skin tone only available in 2 lighter tones. But there you go, the pros and cons of them.

And the last comparison is the between Frankie Stein (Monster High) and Obitsu head. So to tell I’ve never have MH dolls in my life before but since I saw many doll repaint artist I tried to dip in. I think I’ll made separate post in the future about MH. But long story short I’m doing a color method test (acrylic on left and soft pastel on right), hence why the skin looks like that. Now back to the comparison. Obviously, the head of MH is bigger than Obitsu. While I like MH sharp features in general, I actually fall into more softer side when comes to doll repaint and “sharp” when come into drawing (you can check my drawings here *wink wink*). So Obitsu fit to serve that if you want to made something serious but there some softer features to offer. Well, MH offers one too but different kind, so does Obitsu who have sharp chin (Idk how to put it in words but I hope you get it).
So in short, for me personally:
Pros:
-I love the neutral expression which you can turn into many expression. Serious looking but not to harsh? Gotchu. Patient looking anime mother? Gotchu. Glamourous villainess who look unharmful at first but looks lil bit sus? Gotchu babe.
- Not too sharp strong features, though still sharp on the chin. Since Parabox is Japanese company, it made sense Obitsu more into Japanese aesthetic. You know, looks balance in my opinion though I tend to soft Western-stylized side.
Cons:
- The skin tones, only available in two but usually come in white most. It’s unbelievable bcs this 2021. That’s why I find artists rarely go into Obitsu. Wish they expand the color range. It’s a very potentially wasted bcs the neutral face is is what the biggest positive point here. I’m a pathetic when come into skin recolor.
- I thought the heads come as same size as Barbie!! They even smaller so I’m in through of kinda disappointment. Big reason why I save it for future projects while I figuring out what can I do with this aaaaaa
- The neck hole. I’m actually so anxious to cut it. I’m afraid to ruin them since I’m waiting for a month of these delivery and highest purchase of doll heads for now.
-You see, the neck curves. Even bigger than Barbie, might even look weird from side view. But seeing the curves suddenly I wonder if these might fit in 1/6 bodies like Phicen of Hot Toys since you know their necks are bigger than Barbie.
