I'd say that this problem has spread to other countries as well. The party that led my country for more than 12 years is winning elections by promising fight against progressivism, liberals, LGBTQ+ and "international agents" (non-profit organizations that are basically doing everything that the state is supposed to be taking care of - sick people, kids, poor, animals, nature...). They are still winning even though they have been REPEATEDLY caught lying, stealing... right now, to avoid ending up in jail, they are changing laws. (less time in prison for accepting bribes, damages need to be much higher to be considered an offence... based on this law, they just let out people who stole whole HOUSE and tens of thousands of euro from an 83 year old man...) They are also trying to make it legal to just shoot every bear in the country... and to chop down most of the trees... including national parks... so that bears cannot hide behind them - And I wish I was kidding about this. And YET. They are still getting votes. Because apparently nothing is more terrible than progressives being payed by George Soros and 72 bathrooms for all the different genders and all those evil non-profits that are trying to take over the country (btw. apparently, USA is sending money to those... so if you were wondering why there is not enough money in America, it is being sent to Slovakia to take over the country) And people are leaving the country instead of fighting for it and I don't even blame them anymore tbh. Sorry, I got angry. Politics are BS and sometimes I think we deserve another meteorite to hit the Earth to wipe it all out and start from the beginning.

seeing americans post about their election with such disregard and apathy is going to give me an aneurysm actually girl just give that vote to me then i'll do it. since you're so fucking complicated

You're joking, but there is real life MUDr. Drakulova, hematologist, in Bratislava. It sounds better in Slovak - we add "-a" or "-ova" at the end of surname to indicate female - and we tend to spell Dracula as Drakula (Fun fact: I wanted to fact check if she really married a guy named Drakul and found also a funny story about urologist Drakul who worked with a nurse Cesnakova (cesnak = garlic)

Anyway - past two weeks I've got like a dozen new followers - all those blogs were pretty much empty BUT they had their profile pics changed. I am still like 90% sure they were bots, because I am mostly just lurking these days and there is not really much of a reason to follow me - and definitely not so many people at once. (and no, there were no notifications for reblogs or likes of something older, just those followers) (I hope this will do what I think it will, because last time I used reblog like this, there was a nice and easy to use and understand editor, not this... I now understand why new users are confused.

Hi @staff, Just wanted to let you know, that I wanted to reblog something, while adding to it. It's been probably a few years since I've done that the last time.

So, I clicked the reblog button... I am honestly not sure where am I supposed to write anything, the small window comes out and it has buttons that don't tell me what they do. First try I reblogged without adding anything. Second try I saved a draft. Where? Who the hell knows, I can't see drafts anywhere. I mean... I know my brain is in vacation mode and there's like a half of the braincell keeping the lights on, but I'm pretty sure I didn't have this kind of problems figuring this website out when I first signed up those ten years ago.

No wonder new people have troubles figuring this stuff out. I do too and I've been here long enough.

All the motivation I had for that reblog is gone when there is a wall of "figuring it out first" in front of me.

at around 7pm yesterday, october 12th, a gunman killed two men in or in front of tepláreň, one of the few lgbt establishments in bratislava, the capital of slovakia.

the shooter was the nineteen-year-old son of a former candidate for an extreme far right political party. he used his father’s gun, and before the shooting, he published a 65-page, antisemitic, anti-LGBT manifesto, in which he claimed to be inspired by the shootings in christchurch and buffalo. he was found dead this morning.

the police, of course, are ~investigating~ the motive, but those who are free to speak - this including the president - are fortunately calling this exactly what it is: a hate crime. the media coverage is abundant, because shootings are very rare in slovakia; some are calling it a breaking point which will finally reveal whether this country is capable of compassion toward lgbt people, and of recognizing that the extremist rhetoric that has been infiltrating our politics for over a decade directly leads to death and suffering.

there isn’t much for the international community to do, but i’m posting about this because the shooter’s name and face are all over the articles coming out this morning, granting him and his message the kind of visibility he probably would have wanted.

i’m posting about it because my heart hurts thinking about the bravery it takes to just exist as yourself, in this country and others, and about any safety we might feel being so very easily ripped away. i’m posting about it because i said two days ago that i cover my rainbow patch whenever i get on the train, just in case; because i take two t-shirts when i go to pride and change into anything with rainbows on it once i’m there; because the official guidance from pride events is still to remove anything that could identify you as attending, for your own safety - but none of that is enough, because we can’t take off who we are, and these people don’t just want us quiet, and legally subjugated, and out of sight. they want us dead. this is my home country, and every day i’m reminded of why it’s impossible for it to feel quite like home for someone like me.

the victims went out for a drink on a wednesday night to a place where they felt safe to be themselves, a place that only exists because of this community’s unflinching commitment to persevering. their names were Matúš and Juraj, and first and foremost, i’m posting this so more people can know them, and not the person who took their lives.
