To Lift A Curse >> Characterization
Okay, so, ‘To Lift A Curse’ is my newest fantasy work that I’ll be updating from time to time when I get the chance. I don’t want to ruin the mood and introduce every single character that’s gonna appear, but, I would like to introduce the TWO MAIN characters who we will get to follow up on in the story.
>> Prince WesleyOf Kingdom Haria  <<
He’s the fist born of King Winston and Queen Lola. He’s also an older brother to Princess Natalie. He enjoys reading books in his free time, and also plays piano. Sadly, when he was born, he was cursed, since his father was unable to pay tribute to the Wicked Society. (Every time a member of the royal family is born, tribute is paid to the Wicked Society so as to ensure the safety of the born member)
After his 18th birthday, his cousin tells him it’s best he sets out to find the witch responsible so as to get his curse lifted so that he may carry on a normal life, and eventually marry.

>> The White Witch II (Renelda) <<
She is the daughter of ,The White Witch I who passed when Prince Wesley was only four years old. She was later sent to stay with her aunt - Sesi- who ensures that she stays as wicked as possible. She resides in the Wicked Mountains of the Kingdom Okluh. She enjoys practicing new spells with her pet cat- Jodie.

The 14 Fairytales Challenge
Tumblr media
I’m starting a personal writing challenge inspired by this right here, perhaps the most accurate list about love I’ve read. My goal is to write a fairytale based on each prompt without changing the message of said prompt - so no mixing allowed!
Le Prompts
1. It doesn’t matter what time it is but when he tells you he wants to see you, you’ll be at his doorstep in a heartbeat, no matter how you look like.
2. You’re willing to lose sleep just to talk to him. You’re willing to spend your precious time to talk to him.
3. In every relationship, there’s one party who always loves and gives more. It doesn’t matter if it’s you.
4. There’s no need for compromise, you conform. There’s no need to meet halfway, because you’ve already made the whole trip.
5. You drunk text him. You drunk call him. It doesn’t matter. It’s him you think about when you’re drunk.
6. You respect his freedom. If he wants to be alone, you’ll let him be. If he wants to explore his options, you’ll let him be. And you wait tirelessly on him.
7. You can’t stay mad at him for too long. And you can’t stand him being mad at you. You fold.
8. You go to places where he always goes, not to see him but to feel his presence. You’re happy with that.
9. You still want to be with him even if he has broken your heart into tiny little pieces.
10. You don’t care about his past. You accept it wholeheartedly.
11. You’re willing to give up and change your career if he wants you to, even if you’re more than halfway to making it.
12. You’re in for the long haul. You know there will be detours, road bumps, misread signs but you’ll still be holding on. You understand that one time or another, you’ll feel that you’re feelings are not as strong as it once was but you’ll strive to feel it again because there’s no one else you’d rather be with even through rough patches, and because love is a commitment, a promise.
13. You love him with all his idiosyncrasies, his weirdness,…, all his imperfections. Even if he takes a bath three times a day, even if he can’t play poker no matter how many times he’s been taught, even if he has OCD, even when he’s loves basketball more than you, and all those little irritating things that you’ve come to love.
14. When he tells you there’s no more chance of you two getting back together, you’ll still pray that he’ll change his mind. And you’ll keep saying the same prayer as the years pass by.
Please keep me accountable my fellow writers! I’m aiming to post one every day for two weeks, but if they turn out longer I’ll be doing at least two per week. I want a complete manuscript by the end of this year, and I’m pushing myself towards that goal even if it makes me go blind.
If anyone wants to join in, LET’S DO THIS THING :DDD
(But please I need your moral support you lovelies.)

Are These Filter Words Weakening Your Story?
After putting my writing on hold for several weeks, I decided to jump back in. I expected to find all sorts of problems with my story–inconsistencies in the plot, lack of transitions, poor characterization–the works. But what began to stick out to me was something to which I’d given little thought in writing.
Filter words.
What are Filter Words?
Actually, I didn’t even know these insidious creatures had a name until I started combing the internet for info.
Filter words are those that unnecessarily filter the reader’s experience through a character’s point of view. Dark Angel’s Blog says:
“Filtering” is when you place a character between the detail you want to present and the reader. The term was started by Janet Burroway in her book On Writing.
In terms of example, you should watch out for:
To see
To hear
To think
To touch
To wonder
To realize
To watch
To look
To seem
To feel (or feel like)
Can
To decide
To sound (or sound like)
To know
I’m being honest when I say my manuscript is filled with these words, and the majority of them need to be edited out.
What do Filter Words Look Like?
Let’s imagine a character in your novel is walking down a street during peak hour.
You might, for example, write:
Sarah felt a sinking feeling as she realized she’d forgotten her purse back at the cafe across the street. She saw cars filing past, their bumpers end-to-end. She heard the impatient honk of horns and wondered how she could quickly cross the busy road before someone took off with her bag. But the traffic seemed impenetrable, and she decided to run to the intersection at the end of the block.
Eliminating the bolded words removes the filters that distances us, the readers, from this character’s experience:
Sarah’s stomach sank. Her purse—she’d forgotten it back at the cafe across the street. Cars filed past, their bumpers end-to-end. Horns honked impatiently. Could she make it across the road before someone took off with her bag? She ran past the impenetrable stream of traffic, toward the intersection at the end of the block.
Are Filter Words Ever Acceptable?
Of course, there are usually exceptions to every rule.
Just because filter words tend to be weak doesn’t mean they never have a place in our writing. Sometimes they are helpful and even necessary.
Susan Dennard of Let The Words Flow writes that we should use filter words when they are critical to the meaning of the sentence.
If there’s no better way to phrase something than to use a filter word, then it’s probably okay to do so.
